Acer A500 Keyboard - Acer Iconia A500

Hey guys,
I just got the A500 keyboard from Acer!
Cheaper than the Xoom keyboard by a good bit.
It works awesome!
http://everydayreviews.net/2011/07/acer-iconia-tab-bluetooth-keyboard-review-1010/
I reviewed it at my website. I think it's def worth getting

I'm using the Verbatim folding portable keyboard, and it does the job very well. I got it for $54. Price matched at Fry's Electronics from Amazon price.

I actually just ordered one today though too, so im glad it works great for you

i didnt mean buzzing to reply but just seeing it around in general. i havent been seeing it in the forums or anywhere else for that matter

Google is your friend, plenty of pics here:

this works great and with a case too
I bought this on amazon for around $25 total http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004KCPZ5O and it works so great. the only drawback is that you won't be able to use your back camera if the device is in the case, but other than that everything work perfect.

Very similar to my Palm Bluetooth keyboard that I already had from my PalmOS device days. Very compact and handy, and works great. Of course, the stand part doesnt work for a tablet, but that part hides inside the keyboard anyway.

nice. folding keyboard would make it really easy to travel with. Although, the acer keyboard is pretty good in size. i have no trouble putting it in the 10" sleeve with my a500.
im starting to second guess my purchase a bit haha

You shouldn't be second guessing at all. That's a good price, especially for an OEM keyboard. My Palm keyboard was more than that back in the day. I bought mine when Palm was on the way out so I got a great deal, but if you find my keyboard for sale now it's between $75-200.

has anyone figured out (or know) how i can configure the hotkeys? so for instance when i push the browser button it opens dolphin instead of stock browser?

If Dolphin is set as your default browser, then the browser button should bring that app up when you click a bookmark or web link. The best I can suggest is to go into the applications settings, find the first browser app in the list, clear the defaults. Wash, rinse, repeat with each additional browser app. Then as final step, click a web link; after which you should get prompted to pick your default app for that action.

Sorry, but you misunderstood what I was saying. Hopefully this clarifies. I was thinking that if it was your default browser overall, that the browser button on the keyboard would launch it also.
I don't know why that seems not to be the case.

sorry for the misunderstanding, but yea, idk either. its just a minor annoyance, the keyboard is still great, my only other problem with it is when it isnt used for a couple of minutes it does like a standby kinda thing, and when you type a letter it will spam it so you have to backspace and start over, i dont know if thats an issue with the rom im using or just the keyboard but again its not that big of a problem haha
over all if anyone is considering buying this keyboard i would recomend it. its light, real keys, not the rubber ones that are hard to type with, and so far its had great battery life.

I seen a very similar targus keyboard for palm os with the dock stand thing but couldn't see a way to charge it or sync it so I didn't get it and it was only 10 bucks... Any ideas

This one is device specific and will not work for anything except the Handspring PDA.
If you're looking for something foldable, I'll recommend the Targus I use. Otherwise the Acer branded is the next most portable of all the bluetooth keyboards I've looked at.

Any new keyboards?

I have been using the stock Honeycomb keyboard and wanted to try something better ( well I think it's the fact that the Honeycomb keyboard has similar issues that the Gingerbread keyboard suffers from as well). I am right now typing this on my Xoom using the Thumb Keyboard 4.0 beta. I have tried the Tablet Keyboard on the market but it's just too slow and there is no multitouch compared to the Honeycomb keyboard. However the Thumb Keyboard Aldo lacks multi touch. Anyone know of an underground keyboard that no one knows of that I could try? I'm open to any other keyboard than the ones I have named. Preferably I would like something like the stock keyboard, thumb keyboard is great but it has a pretty big learning curve.
Thanks
Sent from my Xoom
Unfortunately the swift key beta is private and I was lucky enough to sign up for it when I had the chance and I can say it's awesome. When it comes out I think you'll be pleased.
Here I will type with the Android keyboard right now, it works great and I love it but sometimes when I type words such as back, it will repeat the CK at the end, which getts pretty annoying. I love this keyboard because it has the ease of access of smilies, comma, apostrophe, period, and dash plus forward slash. That's why I hate thumb keyboard. It doesn't have quick access to these, so it feels like a very unnatural experience when I type.
Sent from my Xoom
I'm not trying to sway you but Thumb Keyboard has easy access to all the things you just mentioned...
I've also tried Tablet Keyboard, it's like a free version of Thumb Keyboard. It's good but, to me, not as nice as TK.

Well, it's just on the Android Stock Keyboard, you get access to all of that right there on the lower right hand corner of the keyboard, you don't need to tap onto the symbols button to access the rest. I like Android Keyboard, I enjoyed the Tablet Keyboard, but it's just so lacking in features. Are there really no more keyboards available for Android? Anyone here making one? I would be willing to beta test.
Sent from my Xoom
I think it takes some getting used to
the thumb keyboard looks good for when you are holding the xoom at the same time - so you can access all the letters with just the thumbs!
my main gripe with it was the lack of long-press-numbers from the front keyboard layout - but holding the num button and pressing a key works alright
Thumb Keyboard is by far the best keyboard for Android Tablets. As stated before...it does take a little getting used to...but once you do you can type 2x to 3x faster then with stock...atleast that is how it is for my wife and I (we each have a Xoom).
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
+1 for Thumb Keyboard. Getting so used to it I don't think I'll ever use a different layout.
Thumb KB all the way. Very customizable
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Same here re: Thumb Keyboard. I love it. Don't need to go to the symbols layout for those characters; just need to long-press the right keys.
I really wouldn't mind thumb keyboard if it also had a full regular QWERTY keyboard lay out, because sometimes I use my Xoom on my lap and it's just very fast and comfortable to type with a full keyboard.

I know you've tried it and it's not what you're looking for but Tablet Keyboard has that option. Would like to see some more development of Tablet Keyboard actually, it's a good project. I might donate.

I actually tried the Tablet Keyboard again, it works well and I would be willing to learn and get used to it but the fact is that it has no multi touch, and the biggest downside is that there ate no auto correct options. It's a great keyboard but just not worth getting the time to get used to it. So far the Android keyboard is the best one to me, and thhat is sad considering that it makes mistakes like the one I just typed, and it sometimes auto double spaces for somme reason. Honestly we need a better keyboard, I still might have hope with Swift Keyboard, it actually looks pretty good.

Thumb Keyboard! It's the best money I've spent on the Android Market so far. It takes a few minutes to get used to, and the number keys are a bit of a stretch, but other than that, it's great.
I just installed WritePad too but mostly for kicks and giggles. I don't think there's any chance that WritePad will be faster or more efficient than Thumb Keyboard.
I like Thumb, used it for a week (the beta)
but Swiftkey is just awesome. If you're lucky enough to have access to their vip forum... get it!
I use Thumb keyboard. Its the best

[Q] Iconia W500 keyboard?

I haven't seen one in person, but since the design is similar enough, I thought I'd ask if anyone knows if the keyboard unit from the W500 tablet might happen to work with the A500? I can see logic going both ways, but if someone has had the chance to try it out, I'd love to know how it went!
From what I've researched on the W500, the keyboard uses USB, and will not work for the A500.
That was one of the things I was most excited for was the keyboard for this guy. It looks like it hasn't been released, but I'm sure they will end up making one at some point.

For USB, it means that is uses an USB port...
Surely you can use a USB M to F cable or plug your A500 vertically on it...

Well, that photo certainly clears up my questions - I mistakenly assumed that the W500 would use the same dock connector, but they're clearly more different than I anticipated!
Here's hoping that we'll get a similar keyboard setup at some point as an accessory. Until then, there's always bluetooth, which is probably a good enough solution that I won't bother with a specific keyboard if it is released...
It seems that keyboards and other accessories can now be ordered direct from Acer's online store - for those of us in the US anyway. No photos yet. But it appears that the items are available.

A500 Keyboard??
Just saw an interesting post on TechniDroid. Guy claims he spoke to someone at Acer who confirmed there will be a keyboard dock for the A500. Since I'm a newbie on this forum I can't post the link unfortunately.
If you search "Acer to have keyboard dock for a500" it should pop up.

You must not have seen the w500 keyboard if you're asking that question. Look it up and it will become very clear why it wouldn't work on the A500. A sad sad day for us all. I too was looking forward to that keyboard dock with the superior A500.
Sorry for digging up the thread, but Acer now lists the keyboard on their site. It's not a dock, completely separate, but it looks very nice.

Very Low Profile Bluetooth Keyboards...?

I'm not thoroughly convinced that I need a keyboard with my device, but if I was going to buy one, it would have to be either very small or very thin. Why tote around a keyboard that's just as large as the tablet?
Any ideas?
Of course, there's always this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/keyboards-mice/8193/
(if it was ever in stock again).
I am currently using the Acer wrapping with an Incase faux-fir slip case, so I'd hope that it would be low-profile enough to fit in there.
I am curious as well. what are the best keyboard/case combis that we can get

Also, a prerelease product info page on an interesting BT fold-up keyboard:
https://jornostore.com/
that jorno is nice but not for that much!!!! you can get a flexi keyboard bluetooth on amazon for around 30
I was considering getting the Motorola atrix keyboard.... i have the atrix so that with bluetooth on the tablet would work fine specially considering the android function buttons..
I have the Moto keyboard (Link) and for the most part it's a very nice unit. The only real issue with it is the massive bump in the back where they put the batteries and whatever else they have packed into it, that and not all the short cut keys work, but I am not sure that is the keyboard.
It's worth the purchase, and is very nice on the plane, but I find myself not carrying it locally just due to size. The Jorno looks like a great compromise for when I am more local but want to slam out a page or two...

Sure, it's not going to be the world's greatest keyboard, but I'm really just looking for decent yet portable. If I really need something more, I've got a Logitech K340 that works great. It's not bluetooth, but Logitech's USB receivers are so small anymore that it really doesn't detract at all.

I'm no dev, and I don't like to be a negative nelly, but you're trying to take a piece from Sense UI and make it work in AOS/KP. Two very different beasts making it a tough challenge to pull off right. It would be nice, but it probably won't happen.
I know this isn't what you asked for, but since what you asked for is pretty unlikely to happen, I thought I'd offer this as an alternative.
I use Swiftkey-3 as my keyboard, and it is a fantastic keyboard aside from the fact that it has an option for showing arrows.
Here is a screenshot just so you know what it looks like.
It might get you what you want in a very easy way, easier than trying to flash a sense keyboard over an aosp rom.
Plus it has several themes which look nice. This one looks really good with ICS I think.

I know this isn't what you asked for, but since what you asked for is pretty unlikely to happen, I thought I'd offer this as an alternative.

What version of Swiftkey ? I have v1.1.91 ... just got it from the Amazon store 1-2 days ago. I see no option for turning on arrows, nor does mine even look like that. That looks like a stock Android keyboard while mine is rather HTC-Sense-looking (larger buttons, light gray color, etc).

You have to go to options, and the theme section. Different themes will change the color. Also the arrow option is in the theme section.
Your version is old, it may not have all of that. I am using 3.0.4.343
I bought it back on the old version and I upgraded for free, but I bought it on the google market, not sure how amazon handles updates like that.
My version is 2 upgrades newer than yours I think. First there was your version, SwiftKey, then Swiftkey-X then Swiftkey-3.
Yeah, that's the problem. I actually got it for free from Amazon. Later, it appeared that maybe Swiftkey pulled the app 'cause you couldn't update it. Seems that the version after mine was Swiftkey-X and they weren't doing upgrades between "major" versions.

Swiftkey x has the beta before they made it Swiftkey 3. I used it for a while and I actually bought Swiftkey 3 when they finalized it because Swiftkey x was good and now I don't use Swiftkey because it got really sole for some reason.

That stinks. But I think it's only a few bucks on the Google Market, so it might be worth it to you.
Get SwiftKey-3 if you do, not X.

Just looked on the Play Store and there is a free version that is fully functional but only good for one month.
Might help you decide if it's worth the $$ to you.
i dont really see why u would want the arrow keys i mean whats the point. what do u use them for.

I like them. It makes for easy cursor placement within text when you want to add/edit.

oh well if you put it that way well then i guess it makes sense now
I don't care for them myself. They get in my way when I type.

I'm no dev, and I don't like to be a negative nelly, but you're trying to take a piece from Sense UI and make it work in AOS/KP. Two very different beasts making it a tough challenge to pull off right. It would be nice, but it probably won't happen.

I don't think its a tough challenge at all as long as u make it a separate app not a flashable zip that modifies the default touch input keyboard which aosp roms don't have.
I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844512. It works great. It just doesn't have arrows
Arrows are the must for me. Use them to go back and forth to edit the misspelled words in the messages I type.

Why has google not released a decent keyboard for the N10?

I know most of you wouldnt be interested in one since it is a tablet but I'm jealous of the asus transformer infinity owners who have a nice keyboard/dock etc, theirs even has a trackpad to make it essentially a low powered laptop. I've seen various 3rd party bluetooth keyboards on ebay but none that look too impressive.
I'd definitely be interested in one. That was one of my cons when purchasing this tablet. Something integrated would be sweet!

The best solution I've found was a MoKo Keyboard case.

I've been using it awhile. My review is at the end of my Nexus review.

Best looking one I've seen yet, thank you sir! I like the idea of an Asus dock style keyboard, but the fact that this is in a case is nice.

Its not always the best- after owning it 6 months, it HAS saved my tablet from 3 drops (outlined in my Amazon review), but the loop that holds the closing strap is a tad loose and I'm worried it might tear. Otherwise I love it. Best of all, the keyboard's detachable without clips/knobs/anything that might snap.

I have this case as well, however I have it for only two days LOL, and it is already amazing to use, the keyboard is really nice and the best part of it being in a case is that you can take off the keyboard and use only the tablet . Also it has a really stylish finish, and it's comfortable to carry . Using this thing with a mouse and Complete Linux Installer gave me a very powerful Netbook hahaha
I didn't realize you could take the keyboard off, nice! yeah I'm excited; it's ordered. Hmmmmm linux on nexus 10......... interesting.

Yea, it's really good! I took some screenshots and uploaded here, it's nothing more than chmod and vnc, but 2GB RAM and Cortex-A15 processor is more than enough hahahaha!

Using the bluetooth keyboard, a normal USB mouse plugged on an OTG cable. Rooted. Running with CompleteLinuxInstaller (to boot up Fedora) and VNCing with Jump . Hope this makes this "Linux on Nexus 10" more clear . Hope you enjoy your case hehe

Thats Cool! I love ubuntu on my labtop, definitely going to do some reading and searching! Nice work!
I too would love to see an official keyboard, that makes use of the Pogo pins too, and maybe had some extra cool stuff. Perhaps Google just doesn't want anymore money though or something...
It Arrived yesterday. You guys were right this thing is money. The keyboard is a bit small for long typing session, but perfect for general everyday stuff! Couple of questions: Do you guys just use the nexus charging plug or something smaller? Does anyone know if the magnets on the case mess with all of the compass/ gyros/ accelerometor/ etc?

Haven't had it mess with any of the above. I use the POGO myself, actually.

Great . I typed half of my new one shot today lol (1200 words), I thought the keyboard was small too, until I got used to. And no, I don't think it messes with anything mentioned . Enjoy it!
