Help Iconia A500 not starting - Acer Iconia A500

Today I buy a new Acer Iconia Tab A500 out boxed the thing thought start it up power button pressed turned white waiting nothing only black screen.
Charged for a few hours try to power one while charging power button turned red turned device on power button goes white but black screen no boot animation just nothing.
Store is closed now but is my tablet broken or am I doing something wrong.
Don't want to go back to store tomorrow if it's nothing.
Did anyone had similar problems?
The Tab is just out of box new really annoying it just do nothing.

Sounds DOA. Exchange it for a new one.

DOA?
You mean Dead On Arrival
Stupid thing thank god the Ipad 2 that I bought works gues I return the Iconia for exchange for new one this time I test the damn thing at store.

There is a little reset hole near the USB port press it for 1 or 2 secs. Then try to power the TAB again. Hold the power button atleast 4 secs before release It should vibrate shortly after release of the power button!

You need to press and hold the power button in until you feel the tablet vibrate. At that point you should boot just fine.

Correct way is press the power button 2sec.

No luck tryed the rest button near USB than power one same problem no sound no booting just the power button turns one screen stays off.
Try to hold power button just nothing did try a volume + and - plus power to see if it has a bootloader like phones still cant get the damn screen on.
I think the screen or some hardware failure going back to store tomorrow.

People from Netherlands don't buy a product at Dynabyte stores.

Sorry to hear you are having such a bad issue with the store. Most stores offer a 14 day return policy. Hope you get it all worked out.

You guys had to see the morons face's at store

Good for you. I am glad it all worked out. Now you can enjoy the new toy. Chalk one up for the consumer.

I am new at this tablet thing and in hurry next week friday going to holiday.
I am looking for a car charger is there such a thing and a screen protector searched some dutch sites that sell screen protectors for tablets nothing on their site for Acer Iconia Tab A500.
Can some of you guys point me to a site so I can order it asap.
Got 8 days left

Car Charger
I do not think there is one specifically for the Iconia - but a standard AC inverter should do the trick and allow you to plug into your car.
As for screen protection - there's plenty of generic 10.1 inch screen protectors that should work great - i personally stay far away from them - they make my devices respond poorly to touch input and I keep my hands / screen clean. Just get a nice case to keep it in

Actually there is one. Zagg has one out for the A500. I got mine at Best Buy for $29.00 and it works great.

The orginal Iconia case that looks like the ipad2 style stand is it good or trash?

I like it. It does have an issue with sliding down on the left sde, but no big deal. It has the cutouts for both cameras. You do have to take it off to insert or remove the microSD card, but all the other ports are accessable. It also allows the A500 to stand up at two levels depending on the orientation of the tab. Hope that answers your question.

You should first post in the Developers thread for help on his rom.. NOT ALL Roms are created equal..
with that said it sounds like you did not wipe correctly. or you have a bad download..
reread the rom flashing instructions.. POST IN THAT THREAD of THE ROM DEVELOPER WILL GET YOU THE very most reliable Solution and help..
Good luck

Power button failed
I have had my A500 since September 2011 and use it constantly. A couple of days ago it refused to turn on and the power button felt a bit squishy. Chatted online with Acer and had to send it back for repair. Anyone else had the power button fail? I hope they honor the warranty since I have a custom ROM installed.

What happens when you send your phone in for a swap and they decide it's fine?

I am currently having some troubles with my volume-up button...it doesn't react to all presses and there will be times where I'm driving and I try to increase the volume and it will take 5 presses to activate it. If I try pressing it five times later, it might register all 5 presses. If I send it in for a device swap (the one where they ship you a new phone) what will happen if they get the device and come to the conclusion that the volume-up button is fine? Will they keep the $500+ deposit?
Additionally my vibration motor sometimes completely stops responding for a period of time but I can't seem to figure out what triggers it to do that, and it doesn't happen often but it happens enough to bother me as it's pretty hard to use the touch softkeys when they don't have any feedback! I considered it was just CM6 as my old phone never had that problem and I didn't recall my new phone having that problem when it was running stock 2.2, but now with an AOSP gingerbread rom it exhibited the same problem for a few minutes.
What can I do? I would send it in for repair but I won't be around to pick it up and while my parents can keep it while I'm gone it's a bit useless to spend $400 on a phone and not be able to use it, right?
You have to be nuts to do anything in those terms. Giving your phone and a full value deposit? And not being sure of the rules for them to keep it? Where do you live? North korea?
On the other hand I'm trying for months to get an answer from google about my buggy touch screen and I'm still ignored.

Don't be so paranoid!
HTC wont charge you for a swap unless they don't receive the phone within 10 business days of you receiving the swap. And even then, they will call you before charging you the $500 deposit.
My power button would only work half the time. I had the same worry as you.
Just don't worry. Get a replacement, and send yours in after you get your new one, easy as that.

That's because everyone's got buggy touchscreens. Only solution is to buy a different phone
As far as the device swap, I had a positive experience when I bought one secondhand and it had a problem with rebooting when it got too hot, and they had a new phone to me in a day or two. That was an obvious problem, but I'm just curious about something minor like this.
ANYTHING wrong your phone (edit -- besides software related mess-ups you did yourself) allows a swap. Even dust under the screen!
The severity of the problem has nothing to do with anything! If something isn't working, they'll give you a new one.
HTC really are the ****... Let's just hope they keep it up, as they get bigger and bigger.

Do we get a refurb or new replacement?i just sent mine coz i was having boot loop problems.
I've decided I'm going to get a replacement from HTC and send mine back when I get back from vacation. My power button started going out a while ago but with a combination of the app I created, LockMyDroid, and Trackball wake, I only need to use the power button once every 2-3 weeks.
The only reason I haven't done anything until now is that I've been debating if I'm going to regret giving up my AMOLED screen for an SLCD. I think if I had them side-by-side I'd be able to tell a difference but since I will likely sell my N1 in a few months for a Tegra2 device it would be nice to have it as close to mint condition as possible. I bought mine January 6th so my time to get a replacement is definitely running out
If you're looking for them to send you a replacement, I hope your bootloader isn't unlocked. (You mentioned running the AOSP Gingy rom.)
Just send it in for repair. A signature is required for delivery anyway so they won't just leave it on your doorstep. You can opt to pick it up at a FedEx location as well.

Locked or unlocked doesn't matter, as long as its hardware related. I've heard this many times that they acknowledge unlocked bootloaders.

I had the power button fail on mine and was told that since they are not making N1 phones anymore the phone would be a refurbished model if I chose the replacement option. I purchased my phone on the 1st week of Jan 2010 and was not willing to give up my AMOLED screen so I chose the repair option. Sent it in today via overnight prepaid label. Wiped the dust off the old Samsung phone I had and I am using that until my N1 comes back.
For those that had an amoled than received an lcd were you disappointed? Could you tell the difference? Mine has a couple stuck pixels. Debating on whether it would be worth it or not to warranty out.

I'm honestly hoping I get an SLCD because I'm sick of the fuziness the pentile layout creates as well as how red-tinged the display gets when the brightness is low. Got a device swap back in august and it was still an AMOLED unit, no idea what this one will be.
Update on my N1 repair (power button failure). I sent the unit out on 12/22 via fedex overnight, HTC got my N1 on 12/23, did the repair and sent it out the same day. I am scheduled for delivery today!!!!! That is the quickest turn around time I have ever experienced for any kind of repair. I did not think there was any chance I would get my N1 back before the holiday.
FYI, my N1 has an unlocked bootloader, rooted with the Evil Desire Rom on it. HTC obviously did not have any problem with that. I am glad I chose the repair option instead of the replacement option. I have taken great care of my N1, had the full Skinomi skin and most of all the AMOLED screen. Only bad thing is I have to stay home to wait for the delivery.

[Q] Bricked or peice of poop right out of the box

Hello, Im stumped I just bought a brand new phone from ebay sealed in the box its a tmobile htc hd2. upon opening it from the box and turning it on the phone would get stuck at the stick together screen. never did fully boot once. then after about 10 min of waiting i pulled the battery and put it back in. Then the phone would only light up the keys and nothing else. once again took the battery out and put it back in. Now NOTHING, wont respond to any type of reset and wont do nothing. wont charge wont connect to pc did I just get a dud RIGHT out of the box? i did nothing to make this happen i didnt even get to the main screen urgh $450 later one month in shipping to receive what looks like a dud. Checked battery voltage its at 3.75 volts fully charged. wtf?
bump bump bump
That's not impossible.
Try to hardreset it, hold down both volume buttons and power on.
If it doesn't work, do you have the phone's warranty? Get it to HTC and they'll fix it / give you another one.
If not... try checking the eBay warranty that gives you the money back, don't know exactly how it works but i know there's something like this.
If all this doesn't help... then i'm sorry.
Not sure if you're in the United States, but at a T-Mobile store, a brand new HD2 will go for ~$450, and come with a one year warranty.
Hope all works out well.
Hey guys. No I live in Calgary Canada and I ordered this phone to work with our WIND mobile service provider. I tried everything... it wouldnt respond at all... funny though even though it didnt show any signs of life it was charging the batter PAST its rated 3.7 volts. At one point I read 4.2 volts at the battery while out of the phone which is strange to start with. Thinking it was the battery I hard wired the phone to a spliced USB cord to see if it would power up and still it did nothing. I then said this is ridiculous and called tmobile and htc. all I have to say is WOW. Tmobile is serious about customer service even for me not being a client of thiers. Same goes for HTC. both offered to repair or replace the phone as it was brand new and they could see from imei.t-mobile even offered to refund my money which i didnt even pay to them in the first place. Wish we had customer service like that up here in calgary where the city is run on oil money and oil hungry people.. not cool. Anyways I talked to my seller off ebay because I didnt want to wait and he agreed to send me a new one overnight express with fedex and i will get it saturday. I sent this one back already forget trying to fix a problem matic phone. Oh yeah this next one was tested before shipment BUT I did read there is alot of people with this problem and no one has an answer still...............
thanks anyway guys
The battery's supposed to go to 4.26V. And it's good that you're getting another.

Returning GT 10.1 !

So i received the tablet today from amazon. Upon arrival i noticed the really poor job of packing on amazon's part. The box was a cheap thing box with not type of padding like bubble wrap or packing peanuts. My question is who in their right mind decided to ship a $500 item under such poor conditions. I've bought books on amazon with better packing than this! So i open the boxes and take out the tablet and attempt to power it on. No Dice! In every unboxing that i have seen online the reviewer was able to power on the tablet no power. So i think to myself, ok let me plug this in so i plug it in and press the power button and i see the galaxy tab 10.1 screen so you would think hooray right? Wrong! it immediately changed to to this weird battery power off screen and it was a cycle it would come on the turn off on and of etc.. so i think leave it plugged in for a half hour. i come back to find the tablet doing the same thing over and over and over again. At this point i'm fed up! so i call samsung and they could offer me no better solution but to leave it plugged in two hours straight and attempt to power it on again... really? so i do as i was told and still no cigar. So i realized that there is not much to do but send it back to amazon in the A.M great now i have to deal with then :/ Oh well i guess i'm getting an Ipad2. I am not a fanboy heck im not a fan oh most apple products but come on a $500 dollar product only to arrive DOA doesnt fly. Over all the tab looked nice its really sleek thin and light but i wasnt all that thrilled with the plastic back for $500 i prefer something a little bit more durable like real metal not faux brushed metal. At the end of the day i don't know who is to blame. Amazon for thier poor packaging or samsung for a poor product i feel that i will be much easier to just go into an apple store pick an ipad up and if i have any problems i can just go back to the store in order to return instead of dealing with two companies with mediocre customer service. When i drop that much money on something i expect it to work point blank.
Why not just pick one up at BB? No shipping involved
May be a bad unit? You can call back amazon and ask them to send a replacement. Ok you had a bad experience but this can happen to any device. If you don't want to deal with online, you can always buy from local best buy store.
If you have already decided to buy the ipad, then good luck.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Since when does Amazon have mediocre customer service? I have nothing but great things to say about Amazon. So you got a faulty product. They'll ship out a replacement and overnight it to you.
When you spend that much money, get it at a local store so ups or amazon or who even doesn't ship it like crap. Sounds like you are just angry you can't simply walk into a local store and exchange it for one of thousands of other perfectly built units...
Lesson learned.
yeah i would of picked it up at BB if it wasn't so cheap on amazon. I live in chicago so Taxes is 10% and out of 500 thats about $50 so its $550 it total. And since im a student i get free amazon prime so i get next day shipping for $4 and amazon doesnt charge taxes so its$504 in total the difference is a pretty big chunk of change in my opinion. I don't know i really want the fastes possible solution because i have a trip coming up so ill talk to amazon tomorrow to see what they can do.

i think the legit truth is that you had 3x bad luck. A. terrible packer, B. non working product, C. a complete noob phone support 1st day worker.
I've been an Amazon prime customer for years. Put a request in online for someone to call you. You get a call from their Customer Service in minutes, and they will resolve the issue immediately. I have done this numerous times, and is also why I'm willing to pay 70 dollars a year for Prime.
You know. It sounds to me like what we actually have here is a guy who was too impatient to hold the button down for the 5 seconds required to start the boot up process.
Try it yourself with your tab. First shut it down. Next press the button for a second. What happens? Nothing, black screen. Do this repeatedly, each time just press the on button for less than a second.
Now get fed up and plug it in. What do you see? The battery icon for a little while then nothing. Press the on button for a second. What do you see? The battery icon which goes away after a little while.
So, OP. If you still have the unit, try holding the on button down for 10 seconds and see what happens. If not, Amazon customer service will be happy to accept it as a return. But please, don't bad rap Amazon or Samsung for this problem until you make sure the problem is not yours.
I had the same problem. In my case it was because the battery was totally drained. After charging for 15 minutes it started up just fine and has worked fine ever since. As for Amazon's packaging, the interior of the Tab's box is so well protected, and the box is so light the packaging isn't a problem.

To be fair, any product of any value will have "some" chance of being DOA. Being DOA doesn't mean it was dead when it left the Samsung factory or Amazon warehouse as it could have died en route (most likely cause as you mentioned the lack of packaging).

Many people said the same thing about the flimsy looking back of the Samsung Galaxy S II. However, I saw this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErXqnQKs-tA and it just goes to show that Samsung really do know how to design products. Although materials may feel lightweight and cheap, I'm fairly sure they'd be robust and reliable. After all, Samsung would incur the cost via warranty repairs if they made it poorer quality so it's probably cheaper for Samsung to use high quality material.
Overall, I do think it is strange for Amazon to provide no packaging protection for an item like this. At the very least, complain to Amazon, they might give you a goodwill gesture coupon/voucher or part refund for the hassle.
Wish some of you immature members would stop calling the OP a troll. No evidence of that. He is just angry and disappointed with the tab. Anyone else who is disappointed should watch out, since we have immature members on this forum that call people trolls out of the blue. Just if I would call those that do just simple minded FanBoys.
you don't even have to call Amazon, just go into your account, choose returns, and choose replacement. They will ship you a new tab overnight (if its currently in stock) And print out a label and drop the old one off at UPS/fedex/usps, whatever carrier they choose.
I get a minimum of 5-10 packages a month from amazon, ive been a Prime member for 3 years at least. Ive seen super expensive items come with the worst packing ever, and some of the cheap items, super secure. I'm not exactly sure why some things are packed better than others. You can go into your account and rate the packaging job on every item you order from them. Anytime something gets damaged I go ahead and do that.

Just to let you know, your keyboard does have a spacebar and a period key.

Just to let you know, if you actually read his post you'd see he's used both just fine.
Why buy it from BB and pay tax and have 14-day instead of 30-day return policy.

Just like that?

So I am at college now in Florida, DVP running great and all, however...
One day I woke up and took it off the AC charger, and the right side of the keyboard (keys uiop, hjkl back, bnm .com enter,) just stopped working. The respective LED behind the keys also doesn't work. (When i push the A Key, half of the keyboard lights up).
Furthermore, my camera button no longer works.
Is this an issue I can resolve, or do I need to send this phone to Dell and deal with their customer service I hear oh so many lovely stories about?
(Remember, since I am on an off-carrier, my phone is considered retail.)
I called dell mobility when my phones keyboard broke and it only took a day for the new phone to arrive. They didn't even hesitate to send me a replacement.
Also, you get to keep your old phone til the new one arrives.
With the exception of having to set up my phone every time i get a new one, i really don't mind Dell's customer service. I went from a second hand 8gb DVP that i bought off craigslist, to a brand new 16gb compliments of dell. And i got it within one day, and believe me, that's amazing for me as i live in Hawaii.

To me, it sounds like when you unplugged it, it probably sparked and something shorted out. I would go for a replacement.

A chronicle of my TF101 RMA experience - ASUS SUCKS!

I got my TF101 in mid-Feb. The same day as I got it (as a gift) it decided that it didn't want to power on. I went through all the tips on here (very useful, thank you XDA) but ended up having to send it in to get RMAed at the Grapevine, TX location.
Got it back on 2/25. Worked for two hours, then same problem. Started becoming more difficult to turn on, then wouldn't power up at all, despite being PLENTY charged. Called in, spoke to yet another ASUS rep, and ended up with another RMA. They paid for shipping this time (FedEx Super Saver, of course)
Rec'd the tablet back today. Seemed to be working quite well, even went through the update released on 3/20. Left to go to the store and was back within 30 minutes. Guess what!?!?? I no longer will power on anymore!
Called ASUS support AGAIN, demanded they cross-ship me a new tablet, and was pretty much told to stuff it, I need to send it in AGAIN. I asked for overnight shipping both ways and expedited service (the 2nd was to be expedited but I didn't get it back for nearly a month). This was, of course, also not an option.
I'm about to RMA it for the 3rd time.
If any of you are interested, here is a much more detailed writeup of my horrendous experience: http://www.tweaksforgeeks.com/hardware/2012/03/asus-transformer-tf101-rma-process-a-story-of-incompetence
I've written to Anandtech and TomsHardware, and while I doubt that it'll even get looked at by them, with any luck some spotlight on their defective product and incompetence will get something done. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.
Should've just gotten a new one by returning the broken one.
Yup, Asus is pretty terrible with RMAs. Seems like their repair centers can never fix it right the first time.
File a complaint with BBB.
Have you tried holding the power button for 10 seconds? This happens to my transformer too since i updated to ics. Full battery and the screen would just turn off. Nothing can be done except to hold power button for 10 secs

Where did you get the Tablet from? Most places will let you exchange it no problem if you got it retail, did the person who got it for you keep the receipt? If not I guess you didnt have a choice, but if you bought it from Best Buy or Walmart or something like that you should have just taken it back there and it would have probably been replaced with a brand new one on the spot
Same thing happened to my B40 TF101 a few months back.
One day the Pad just locked up then refused to power up (w/customROM onboard, by the way).
* RMA#1: TX sent it back with factory-HCROM. Stated "no issue found" but everything was wiped clean. It lasted about 1 day and no power-on again.
* RMA#2: Repeat RMA#1.
* RMA#3: I demanded a new motherboard or a different unit. They changed
out the motherboard (still-nvflashable). It has been working beautifully since.
Interesting, this is exactly what happened in my case, except I'm just on the second RMA. It is also a BK40. Everyone seems to think that holding the 'owe button will work, or holding the button plus volume, etc. Not in this case, the unit is completely dead. I'm hoping they fix it this time so I can sell the thing and buy anything besides an Asus. Anyone else with a BK40 having the same issue?
Between family & friends we have about 9 TF101s, about 5x B40s (I have two). One of my TF101 was dead (3x RMAs until TX actually did a repair). My niece's B40 screen just went dead two weeks ago, almost out-of-warranty. Her Tab was still running, just no display.
Threads like this make me think i should return mine and look into something else. I've had a few reboot issues since ICS updated with one power on issue but the last couple days have been fine. I have until 4/1 to make up my mind...

I guess Im kinda lucky then (knock knock...). Havnt had a single random reboot/shutdown or freeze.
It died once, but that was because it ran out of battery
Ive had 1 semi-freeze though, not sure what caused it.
Mightve been a random Nova Launcher freeze, or the kernel played up a bit (using the OC'able ICS kernel, running at 1.4Ghz).
But after 1-2min it started responding again (with a message saying novo launcher didnt respond) and has worked flawless since.
I really really hope my TF wont start acting up as others have.
Edit: .... guess what. I just got my first random reboot. Damnit, I never shouldve posted this post! lol
Hm funny, it looped the first screen over and over untill I held the power button down for, oh i dunno, 30sec?, then it started.
I will tell you my experience with the ASUS RMA after i send it the 3 time.
I gave it to Saturn (german electronics mall), they send it to ASUS.
After 3 weeks,i got my TF back. Before the repair, there where scratches on the sides and back, the cam was blurry and so on.
I opened the box and was shocked, they repaired everything, even the scratches. (The device s/n is the same)
ICS was preinstalled.
I dont know why they needed 3 repairs, but now, im lucky again with my tf

It's been sent in for RMA #3 now, it'll be interesting to see if it takes them another month to get it back to me not fixed. I filed a complaint with the BBB and included that - along with a copy of my 2nd RMA form, a new 3rd RMA form, as well as a printout of the long-ass writeup I linked to in my first post.
In the interim I've purchased an Acer Iconia A200, which has beet utterly fantastic. It's got ICS, a charger cord that's longer than a couple feet, as well as a full sized female USB port so that I can actually hook up a flash drive if needed. I do believe I'm in love.

I'm right there with you, Sootah. I have a stock B6O Transformer that I have sent to Asus service 3 times for the same problem. Like you, I had to pay for shipping on the first RMA round (even though the problem was clearly Asus's). I just don't know how this type of customer service can be good for Asus in the long run.
Because of the terrible experiences I have had with Asus, I cannot, in good faith, recommend their products to my friends. Nor will I purchase from Asus ever again.
