I have an iPad and really love the way its screen rotates anywhere I rotate the device. Left-right-bottom-up, any direction.
Can Honeycomb do this? Or can Iconia do this?
Thanks

Even on homescreen, it doesn't rotate

Well, i won iconia and i have seen IPAD and IPAD2, but i think IPAD really works wonderfully smooth, Android and Honeycomb or whatever version and any android device is far away from iOS in either IPHONE OR IPAD. so you will be disappointed when u will use android cause no doubt iOS is far more smooth and better in animations like rotation etc. I know many here won't like it but i have seen both and can tell u exactly.
Yep, look for the little slide switch next to the volume rocker on the top edge.
As for iPad vs Iconia tab, ignore the Apple shill above. I have an iPad 2, the Iconia A500, and the Asus Transformer all layed out in front of me. I pick up the iPad an rotate it, and the screen rotates. I pick up the Acer and rotate it, and the screen rotates. Apple does a cute animation trick that makes you think the icons simply rotate in place (but they don't), while Honeycomb blanks out the icons then redraws them after the turn. Take about a 2-count for each to respond. Honeycomb slows down a little if you have widgets on a screen. Neither delay will prevent you from quickly getting back to work in the "new" orientation.
If the stock launcher bothers you, there are a few dozen amazing launchers to replace it using some clever animations of their own. Can't do that with the iPad.

people do take animations and the act of scrolling more important than actually doing something.

That´s true... one iSheep here in the office said his iPad is better 'cause it has smoother transitions. I asked, and what else? He fell silent.
I really don´t understand why people prefer cute animations better.
screen rotation
Works fantastic. Plus you get a hardware lock switch to lock it in place. Sure, the EyePad might have a cuter way of rotating the screen, but when you consider no flash support, no USB host, no MicroSD slot - is the cute animation really worth it?

well tbh even though it does rotate every which way, in any other orientation other than the original landscape (with the port at the bottom) scrolling between screens shows a slight, but noticeable, framerate drop.
I'm hoping this is due to 3.0 and that the 3.1 upgrade will fix it.

same here. Not terrible but noticeably slower. Wondering if its because it has to render the widgets in portrait and theyre optimized for landscape? I really don't know.

That seems logical, however, it's just as choppy and laggy when you have the Xoom upside down (camera down, HDMI up). I only observe smooth transitions when in the standard, landscape position (and even this isn't always lag-free).

dxTop
I use dxTop Pro on my Xoom, pretty nice interaction. But I didn't set it as default. So each time I hit the home button I get a pop up to select either dxtop or launcher (the xoom default home). I find dxTop as a good alternative. That's why I don't use it as default, just when I wanna play around with a new home. Plus it offer the same exact 3D effects as the default home on the xoom. But with dxTop you have a "cube like" interface. So you can swipe up, swipe down, swipe left and right, and there is a swip for the center. So in all u have about 5 different swipe positon. Not just the current left to right position on the xoom default. You can google it for a demo and more info. Just thought i'll add my 2¢.
So I just came over to the galaxy android side of things from the ipad. The so far, (and with my verizon 4g mobile hotspot in hand), I'm mostly impressed. It's really a beautiful device and I really enjoy honeycomb.
However, my stock tab is incredibly laggy in normal use. This manifests most notably when moving App icons around. Another good enough example is angry birds which runs MUCH smoother I on the ipad. Honestly, my galaxy s2 feels much more responsive in normal usage also. What's going on here I thought tegra was supposed to be better than that? So far I'm a bit underwhelmed with the performance.
Also, what the heck is up with the lack of sd card slot? I'm absolutely baffled by this missing feature as I foolishly assumed it would obviously have one. 32GB is nowhere near enough storage for what I plan on using it for.
And what's up with the lack of netflix?

Hmm... First of all,ios does have a smoother build than android. Android has been released like tero years? But ios has been here for more than four years. Android needs time to catch up. well, then samsung's own tweek about android does slow down the system quite a bit. however about angery birds I myself feel it's about resolution.i feel the one on ipad has lower resolution than the one on android(this is my own observation,i have absolute no evidence to bakup my theory), anyone can confirm or correct me please.
Would any of the dev made launchers work properly with a Honeycomb talent and would it likely help with the lag? It is bothersome especially when my galaxy s2 feels much smoother. Thanks guys.

Suggestions
1. If you want to stay stock honeycomb and it starts to lag between screens, click on + symbol on top right of homescreen, then click other or wallpaper or one of the other options, don't do anything else, then just click the home button to back out. Lag should be gone. Don't know why it works but read it on one of the other forums and it works.
2. Spend $3.50 and buy ADW EX in the market and make it your default launcher. Spend a day tweeking the settings to your liking and you will not see much lag. There is also Launcher Pro Plus but the new update makes ADW EX better IMO. Many forums here will help you set up or tweek ADW EX. Leave your lag behind!
3. What else are you doing while playing Angry Birds? I have never had an issue with a game except for the ones that aren't optimized for honeycomb and are made for a phone. (Which I don't know how anyone plays these games on a phones screen)
4. For typing I absolutely suggest Thumb Keyboard on the Market. I don't know how I went that first week with the stock keyboard. Worth the $2.
Happy Tabbing!

But you would have to do too many things above my pay grade to get it back. Not sure if a factory reset would do it, pretty sure you would have to root the device and flash a honeycomb 3.1 rom.
I like the touchwiz, I'm just hoping somebody comes up with a way to make the task bar black so it doesn't look so bad while watching Netflix. That is my only real dislike. And the innability to switch apps on the swipe up. A world clock, wtf am I going to need that for?
Everything you need to get your tab exactly how you want it is here. Including getting back to stock 3.1 as well as putting a black bar on touchwiz, or overclocking your processor, or yes even using custom launchers from the Market or from some of the great devs we have. The whole beauty of Android, IMO, is that we don't have to accept what the manufacturers give us. Everything you need, files, instructions, and further reading is in the "Look here first" sticky in the development section. The key is read read read, read some more, search, read read, and read. I love my tab because I can make it my own.
A factory reset will not remove the TouchMyWilly update. Honestly, it seems like you rushed into this purchase, especially given that you didn't know it doesn't have a MicroSD slot prior to buying it. 32 GB is actually quite alot if you use cloud storage. You can also get the USB adapter and transfer files that way.
But, it seems like you're not pleased with the Tab. There's no reason to force yourself to like a gadget. If you're still able to return it and give yourself some time to properly shop around for something that fits your needs then maybe you should consider that.
You can also check out the Android Dev forum a few links down from the General. That will show you how to root and flash a pre-TouchWang ROM. I didn't like the update at first, but it's grown on me.

Not as bad as it seems. But it would be great if Samsung published a sdk to make use of their customization of the Android shell. For one thing I love to see more of those apps that are able to stay on top of other apps and still let you use the other apps. Would also be great to get dirty with the launchbar

Yeah, I have read a little of the forum for the black taskbar but I am not that well versed in android to go messing around with folders. If it was on a PC I would be good to go, just need a simpler solution, hopefully an update. At least the taskbar matches my keyboard, just looks awful when watching Netflix.
Thanks for all the responses.
The tab itself is definitely growing on me. I still find it perplexing Samsung left out the micro SD slot; it's one of Apple devices worst "features" and for Samsung to copy that seems bizarre.
To be honest, I have no idea how to go about setting up cloud storage. I'm just used to old fashion storage methods. I have Google Music but really don't know how to get it set up as a network sharing player. I know I'll have to read read read, but I simply don't have the time right now to get into such an endeavor.
Really, don't let some of my negativity fool you. This tablet is awesome. It's just a bit of shell shock coming from my comfortable experiences with the ipad and my knee jerk dislike of the Touchwiz UI I had no idea would pop up in that update.

Because Honeycomb IS broke. It's a beta, an interim build, came out of the oven months and months before it was ready. The TW update is a partial attempt to address some of these problems, and add some extra functionality.
As for looks, for a lot of people, Honeycomb is an eyesore in stock form, color-wise. The very cold color choices are not welcoming.
I daresay most non-geek people aren't fans of neon blue on black, or of faux-retro computer fonts, and above all else, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was meant to compete in the mass market, so it needs mass market visual appeal.

Hey, I totally understand.
I actually really liked the neonish theme of stock honeycomb. It matches very well with the neon color of swiftkey keyboard and just gave a very futuristic vibe.
The added functionality is nice, but that can always be addressed through widgets and apps.
As an aside, what is the name of that app that organizes widgets by grouping similar ones in the widget menu?
Like all of beautiful widgets would lump together into one until you click it?

Ooh, ooh. When you find that, please postback! My collection of widgets is getting unwieldy. Takes quite a while to scroll from left to right thru the whole collection. Its begging for some organization.
I had a Superclean ROM running on my Fascinate phone that collapsed widgets into folders (ex: all the Beautiful widgets into ONE).
I'd love that on my Tab.

It's a matter of preference. I like the TouchWiz update as it eliminated the worst feature of HC 3.1... the typing lag in forums. I also like the Quick Access panel in the bottom-right corner. One or two clicks to get to what you need, unlike the 4-5 clicks it takes to get to the same things on HC 3.1/3.2.
I am also wondering if this was a rush purchase for you if you didn't realize the Tab 10.1 doesn't have an SD card slot. Not picking on you, please don't misunderstand, but if an SD card slot was important, you could have picked up a 32GB Asus Transformer ($460) instead of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB ($600) and used the savings to buy SD cards. I don't have money to burn (says the guy with a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and an Asus Transformer, lol ), so I do a lot of research before I drop $600 on something.
You can't "uninstall" the TouchWiz update once you have it. Wiping the Tab with a factory reset does not remove TouchWiz. You'd have to load a custom ROM to get rid of it.
And as far as Netflix, just head to the Themes and Apps part of the Galaxy Tab forums and grab the Netflix .apk from there. Easy to install, even for an idiot such as myself. That's the only thing that's making me want to keep the Galaxy Tab over the Asus Transformer at the moment.
I have my doubts that it's an exynos processor powering this tablet. Exynos in the galaxy s2 is like lightning. I don't get that feeling with the tab 7.7..wish it had either a faster processor or a quicker one. Yes I concede the screen is larger and that could be the reason but there's just a bit too much lag doing things.. Anyone else feeling the same?

Anyway to answer your question not feeling the same. The S2 is running on Android 2.3 which is lightning even on the older Hummingbird SoC in the gtab 7.0 and galaxy S. HC in general has always felt a bit laggy and choppy even on other SoCs like tegra 2/3. Changing out TW helps a bit but still wont get rid of all the lag that's inherent in 3.0-3.2
Its Touchwiz. Dump it and try ADW EX or something.
Seriously.
Yes as others have said, Honeycomb and TouchWiz is really slowing down the system. For the OS we can't do anything about until ICS comes out. With TW we can replace with other launchers. I had ADW, then tried GO Launcher but thought that was still a bit laggy. Have now gone back to ADW.
Yeah I think honeycomb is the drag on this one..

Not at all. In fact, if you wanted to, you can run multiple launchers of your choosing (see which one you like most and such) and customize each how you would like. Once you're confident that you prefer one over the others, you can set that as the default, and it should be buttery smooth. Just reboot your device so that the memory used for the other launchers is freed up. When you boot your device, it'll go straight to the launcher of your choosing, and the other ones won't even go into the system memory unless and until you load them.
P.S. If ever you want to go back to any other launcher, you can clear your default setting by going into Manage Applications, finding the launcher you're currently using, and selecting "clear defaults"
Next time you press the home button, it'll ask you which launcher to go to.
Thanks man

I dont have the tab yet but can you do a simple test for me with ADW Launcher EX in landscape mode... can you put up about 6 widget bookmarks at the size of 1x2 on a home screen and see if the screen animation is still smooth going in and out of that screen.
I hope this is not too much to ask.

Like browser bookmarks? My main homescreen already has about 5 widgets as it stands, and it's smooth (4 MyCast weather maps, and on Citrix widget).
Just wonderering if anyone is using the Google Experience launcher? Looks really good on the note almost feels like a Nexus experience. Also it responds to the OK google command on the home screen. Always listening which I thought was only a feature on the Nexus 5 / Motorola?

Have you turned off screen rotation by mistake?
Just access the normal Samsung setting screen (by tugging the top of the screen down with your finger) and it is the 4th option from the left. Make sure it is selected... Only thing I can. Think of. Bet you have unselected it by mistake.

I've got the paid Nova Launcher as well. I've stuck with it on my S3, but I haven't gone back on the tablet yet. On the S3, I thought the icons were too big and there is zero customization. However, I've enjoyed the Google Now Launcher on the tablet more so than I thought I would.
If there was a Google Now widget that is always listening that I could use with Nova, I would go back. Heck, I might still go back after the novelty of "Ok Google" wears off.
I finally did it......GREAT LAUNCHER!!!
One of the software features that isn't getting much press but one that I'm hugely looking forward to is the ability to hide the On Screen Nav Buttons on an app by app basis.
I've never been 100% behind Google's decision to advocate the On Screen Nav Buttons. A huge waste of screen real estate sitting there doing nothing while you read/play etc. The expectation was that developers would choose to hide them when they weren't needed but that never really happened. Some developers got behind the idea (thanks!) but even Google has inconsistent behavior when dealing with them.
Now we can choose to display them or not on an app by app basis. A swipe up from the bottom of the screen displays them again.
There are a number of delightful touches like this one on the G3.
Great work LG.

I agree. Even though it's easy enough to root the phone and force immersive mode, I applaud LG for implementing something that should be on every applicable Android phone, yet isn't. I'm very much looking forward to the phone becoming available, whenever that may be.
Though a nice effort by LG, there are a lot of games that use up motions for movement. Anyone into game emulators will especially have issues. Not to mention not all apps work with it, including web browsers.
I prefer my S4 having buttons at the bottom. The irony is the G3 5.5" display is the same size as the 5" display S4 for some apps and navigation.
Still, LGs effort is MUCH better than nothing.

Browsers do work with it. I say 'browsers' but I can only confirm Chrome and the stock browser.
In the instances that it might cause a problem for things like emulators then just don't include them in the list. It's an opt-in feature on an app per app basis. Best of both worlds really.

seems to work perfectly with chrome and stock browser and pretty much any app that i select on my phone. I have to say LG really listens to people and implement their suggestions on their devices. I hate wasting screen real estate especially when i'm playing games or watching a video in an app that can't force the nav bar to minimize. LG solved this problem.
not all apps, I guess

I do not think this cool feature will work on all apps.
This sounds a very good feature and something that everyone should be doing, the thing is though I haven't seen this mentioned in any reviews I've seen or read and that's quite alot! As mentioned I'd prefer hard buttons ala Samsung phones but because they've dropped FM Radio I wont be buying one of those any time soon.
Does anyone know if there's the one handed mode from the G Pro 2 that shrinks the whole screen down to a size of your choice? Again was featured and mentioned in G Pro 2 reviews but is not something I've heard about on the G3

Just YouTube DetroitBORG's Unboxing and Review for a demonstration of the Nav Button hiding and a demo of the One Handed Operation solution LG have implemented. It's a fantastic review showing loads of cool stuff!

It's a nice feature for sure, but gets old after awhile. I hate constantly having to swipe up to bring them up to hit the back button. It's cool on some apps, then others it's not. For whatever reason I can't get it to go away in YouTube. This is on 4.4.2 on a g flex though.

It's a shame there is no pie like control system in the stock rom but it's a lot better than other stock roms where you can do absolutely nothing with the on screen buttons.
It's nice to use for certain apps such as a news app or game where you don't need buttons. Other then that out doors get annoying to swipe up, but I'm glad LG included it.

Is it possible to change the nav button icons to look like HTC One M8 without root?
I saw somewhere you can change app icons without root too?
