I do not take any responsibility to what you do with this, if you brick your phone, that is not my fault, you must understand what this tool is and how to use it. This CONTAINS a bootloader and can brick your phone if you flash this coming from GINGERBREAD BOOTLOADERS (i9000-->JVB, JVO, ect. Captivate-->KF1)
First of all, this must be credited to C3P0LOL, as he is the one that first uploaded this a long time ago for the unlucky people that had their 3 button combos removed.
The reason I'm posting this is because of the fact that for me being a Build 1010, when I use Odin One Click it frys my 3 Button Combo, and it wont boot, thus I need to use a jig to flash again with Odin and the JH2 firmare, and then use the One Click Root Me tool to then get ROM Manager, which will then get me the 3 Button Fix.zip I flash from there.
^^So obviously from reading that, that's a 20-30 minute process just to get the 3 button combo...
WARNING:
IF YOU ARE COMING FROM STOCK GINGERBREAD WHETHER IT BE i9000 or the new Captivate KF1 bootloaders you MUST FLASH Odin-One Click, to flash your bootloaders back to stock
WARNING #2:
FLASHING BOOTLOADERS CAN BE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL AND ESPECIALLY ONLY FLASHING ONE (*SBL in this situation). THIS IS SIMILAR TO IF YOU WERE FLASHING BACK TO STOCK WITH ODIN ONE CLICK BUT JUST REMEMBER YOU CANNOT FLASH THIS FIRST COMING FROM GINGERBREAD BOOTLOADER IT WILL COMPLETELY BRICK YOUR PHONE.
After you flash Odin One Click and your 3 Button Combo is disable flash the below .TAR File with the Odin from the link below and the .512 PIT file from below and you'll be on stock 2.1 JF6 with the 3 Button Combo.
How too flash coming from Gingerbread Bootloaders:

***Note name change the new name of the .tar file is: PDA fix.tar***
For Build 1010's [+] that CANNOT use Odin One Click and coming from GB Bootloaders
1. Flash Back to stock with Odin One Click to get the 2.1 Bootlaoders
2. While your stuck in the boot loop use a jig to get your phone back into download mode.
2.1: You can build your own JIG
2.2 Or you could buy one from MobileTechVideos
3. Open Odin from below and put the .512 pit into the PIT, and the PDA fix.tar file in to the PDA
4. Click Start
5. Voila you will be on stock JF6 with 3 Button Combo working.
Again I understand that this may not be super helpful anymore but I have noticed a lot of people including myself are wondering where the 3 Button Fixed Odin is, well here it is hope you enjoy!
Again one more time ALL CREDIT GOES TO DESIGNGEARS FOR CREATING THE 3 BUTTON FIX.zip and C3P0LOL for creating this extremely helpful 3 Button Fixed JF6.tar
Download link will be courtesy of echelonMCRhartgrenade. Thank you so much, mine just wouldnt upload, but here it is:

Thank you! But again I am super sorry I posted the thread and it should have finished in what MegaUpload said 15 minutes.
Then some bad weather came and the upload froze. It should be done within the next hour but Im SUPER sorry for the delay for the 3 Button Fix JF6.tar
But hopefully since the download link isnt there people will just re read the warnings as this is a very helpful and very productive flash but it is also a risky one.
Download link is up!
Enjoy!
If you have questions PM me.
I could have used this thread 2 weeks ago! Oh well....
Why isn't this in DEV?
Moved to proper forum.
Have you bothered to read through development at all? This is the 2nd repeat of a discontinued thread.
On top of that the new ATT bootloader package fixes the 3 button fix. What you are posting is only going to cause more hard bricked phones.
If you need to go to jf6 stock, use Cezars safe method in my sig. No bootloaders are involved. Then flash the ATT gingerbread bootloaders. They are backwards compatible, and they fix the 3 button problem.
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD TO FIX ANYTHING.

I understand but I have given proper warnings and people should understand the risks. I only made this in the general sections because of the people that need this (like me) and a couple other users this will be very helpful.
Sorry this isnt helpful too you but it is helpful to someothers, and for users that havent taken the leap to Gingerbread yet this will be very helpful to them.
But if you flash the new bootloaders, you won't need it either. Just because they are gb loaders doesn't mean you have to run a gb rom. They will run gb, eclair, or froyo roms.

Alright then I didnt know that. I'm sorry, but thats also part of the reason I put this in general.
Me, and plenty of other people were just looking for the 3 Button Fix. You can ask the mod to take it down but I made this because I thought it would be helpful for people that wanted/needed this to have it again.
Yea this is really only for people still running 2.1 or 2.2 builds that flash back to stock and lose the 3 button. (Like I used to) I needed this a lot back in the day but not anymore since GB.
I apologize if I sounded like an a$&##$. That was not my intent. I merely wanted you avg those to realize this was no longer necessary

hahaha no I understand I probably should have done more research, it was just I noticed a couple threads in the Q&A section about wheres the 3 Button Fixed JF6.
So I decided to help those people out, and myself out with creating a sort of reference thread.
Sorry for clogging up the actual development here haha.

For those among us who aren't terribly comfortable using the RageAgainstTheCage method to root this sucker there is an alternate method! This method DOES however require some familiarity with Odin, so if you aren't cool with that or if you have zero experience using key combinations or flashing I wouldn't recommend this.
Things you'll need:
JI6 Kernel
http://www.multiupload.com/FEJ1YHMM2I
JF6 Kernel
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//test/kernel-captivate-stock.tar.md5
Root via update.zip
http://www.multiupload.com/02RXSWORVC
And Odin of course (NOT THE ONE CLICK DOWNLOADER)!
http://www.multiupload.com/DLS7TWUVPY
1. Place the update.zip on your internal SD card.
2. Power down your phone
3. Boot into download mode and set up with Odin
4. Place the JF6 kernel into the PDA slot, and uncheck auto reboot, hit start
5. Once Odin has finished, remove your battery and close Odin.
5.5 Also remove the USB cable!
6. Put your battery back in, press and hold both volume buttons, and power on
7. You SHOULD be in stock recovery now, select "Reinstall Packages" the root update.zip should run.
8. As soon as the phone attempts to reboot, remove the battery, start Odin, use key combos to get back into Odin
9. Flash the JI6 kernel back to the phone
10. Profit!

whoa...definitely a weird way to go about things, but also seems easier (for the average user) to successfully root.
on the other hand, i would be willing to bet a one-click will be up tomorrow (someone said they would do it, don't remember who).
anyways...like always zilch pulls through! nice job man
The reason you have to switch, is that the JI6 kernel enforces Signature Verification on update.zip packages, so using the root zip package fails horribly. However JF6 does not share the same opinions on unsafe update packages and will eagerly gobble up whatever you feed it

Actually credit goes to designgears for grabbing the kernel first, he beat me to root by about 5 minutes haha, I did however repack it for flashing myself =P But if you're interested in how to pull it, you need root first obviously, then from adb shell:
Code:
cat /dev/block/bml7 > /sdcard/zImage
Then you just have to pack it up properly to be "Odin friendly"
Dear XDA Members
Dear XDA Visitors
We, this means addicted2088, M3kker and myself, encountered a lot of people trying to flash their SGS with a custom ROM but failed almost always at the same point.
We tried to help them in Darkyy's IRC channel as good as we could.
So we decided to work together and created this Guide. We take no credits for the methods described here, only for putting them all in a single thread. We hope this will clear up some misunderstandings regarding the flashing procedure.
As this is a joint effort by us three, instead of writing the guide here, we have created the guide over at Google Docs (link below), which allows us to work on and edit the guide together.
Enjoy reading and please post your comments in this thread.
Don’t forget to hit the Thanks button if you find it useful.
Big thanks goes also to addicted2088 (see second post) and M3kker (too shy). Hit their button too.

hey doc - also big thx for your work here and this awesome rom kitchen idea.
Good effort here.
Odin 1.7 is better at NOT semi-bricking a SGS. check it out. A lot of people have come out of a semi-brick after switching from 1.3 to 1.7
EDIT 1 - A faster way of doing things is instead of flashing CF-root, Odin flash Hardcore's kernel. You get root, superuser & everything & you can directly flash a CWM package ROM.

Quick question about that. I installed k12i via Odin and wanted to make a backup using ROM Manager but when I clicked the option to backup from within the app, the phone rebooted and I got a signature verification error in recovery 3e menu. That's not supposed to happen is it?
Backup is built into k12i.

We just though CF-Root is an easy enough method to get Recovery 2e. Rooting isn't required to flash ROMs, only Recovery 2e, so we used this method..
I think your howto is great, well done.
Just a connection to other roms and some explanations about the files and will be perfect.
Just a question,
Do we have to do cfroot after we flash any rom so we can have 2e again?

Unless you flash a ROM that specifically contains and installs Recovery 3e (mentioned in ROM features), or you flash a stock Froyo ROM, you don't have to install CF-Root (recovery 2e) again.
Great work guys and thanks, but the title says Kernel and Theme as well, all i see is Darkys rom,so what about the ones that did it and want to move on another Kernel or another theme, shall they figure it out on their own?
Thanks
this guide is for darkys rom. if someone wants to switch to another rom/kernel i would suggest they reflash a stock rom. just to have a clean stock froyo base to start from.
Whats more urgent is an official help section for those having problems with Darkys rom .

Hello everyone.
Here you can find the latest (25th of August 2011) stock Android gingerbread release for Samsung Captivate - i897.
It was not tested on i896/i9088 or i9010. If you tested it, please report back.
This package does not contain bootloaders so the risk of bricking your device is very limited (close to zero)
This is Android 2.3.4

Does this mean that I can flash this from Stock 2.2 with its bootloaders?
^ No... U need the GB Bootloaders to run a Gingerbread Rom.
As far I know, there are i9000 Gingerbread bootloader and Captivate Gingerbread/Froyo bootloader, and those two are not competitive to run others ROM.
so... bootloader free version probably prevents hardbricking cappy (black screen of death, JTAG required) whom coming from i9000 ROM but still makes bootloop or cappy-!-pc screen I guess.
1. i9000 ROM -> bootloader included odin package -> fine
2. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free odin package -> hardbricking
3. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free (this thread) CWM package -> bootloop (guess)
4. Captivate Froyo and Gingerbread ROM -> dose not matter bootloader included or not
Please let me know if I am wrong.

But you can update firmware to newest one via ODIN
2. You can unlock without rooting... Its called paying for the unlock code
Free is only through rooting
3. And why have you got another one if you already have a SGS2 ??????
Is that you are hooked on to rooting and bricking

Just flash CF-Root kernel and you're done.

If you gotten a new SGS2, should that not have come with the latest firmware version of that phone, in such a case, would rooting with CF-root not be better?

go to applications > settings > phone information
and note down the kernel version. (look at the KE, KF1/2/3 etc)
and compare that to the ones in that topic. Pick the one that is like it, or almost like it.

but since I've already changed the kernel thru odin wont that information already be skewed?
Well if you didn't note down your stock kernel and flashed a completely different one into it, then you have a problem. Im still very much new to android systems and XDA. (i registed today, but I lurked and read and researched for several days)
But, I think you can just grab one of the latest ones but I think some more experienced users here can give you a better answer on that matter.

heh I think I got it working
thanks for the help guys
I just downloaded the first file on the list
flashed it and it gave me superuser access
then I got Galaxy_S Unlock and it successfully unlocked my phone
I had another thread for this, but I figured it would be good to repost it since I didn't know what I had stumbled upon at first.
For all of those who have soft bricked their phones, I present to you to the MF3 TAR files to flash it back to stock via ODIN.

And for those that aren't sure as to where to put the files when flashing via ODIN, while it should be obvious, I have attached a picture that @xrandallx posted to help those that need it.

It's known issue with MEGA, it works best if your using Firefox or Chrome. If the download keeps freezing keep reloading it will eventually work...
Once somebody can grab the files I suggest they be uploaded to several locations, and perhaps a torrent file.
---Edit---
Maybe a mod can edit the title to include something like [Release]? As is stands now people might miss the thread by thinking it's a question being asked.

AWESOME, simply fantastic! It seems that the picture has been moved, however. Any chance we can get a re-up?
EDIT: The only reason I'm asking is because I have been on MF3 since I purchased my phone. I assume, that if anything happens, I can use the existing guides for MDL, and just replace the files with MF3, right...?

The files are pretty self explanatory. Platform in PDA, modem in Phone, csc in csc, bootloader in bootloader. Only have auto-reboot checked. Ignore the dll file.
Edit, even better ^^^, haha posted while I was typing :good:

No, if you on MF3 and attempt to load any firmware below it such as MDL you'll end up with a brick (which this will fix, grant it). This has more use for people brick their MF3 devices using MF3-based firmwares.
Don't mind me, I misread your post... - Thanks for clearing that up @jd1639.

You won't end up with a brick and the Odin guide for mdl firmware will work just fine. It's a guide. If you don't know what you're talking about don't post
worked perfectly. trading this phone for an lg. I'm on windows 8.1 pro 64bit and used odin v1.85
This worked great for me as well. The only issue I have is when I first boot up my phone, it hangs in the middle of the AT&T logo until I pull the battery then it boots fine. That only happened in the first boot after odin and first boot after doing a factory restore.
recovery
so, with this MF3 image, are we that much closer to a custom CWM or TWRP for i337 MF3s?

Hate to burst your bubble, but this doesn't seem like the case. Although we have access to the TAR files now the fact is the MF3 bootloader remains locked. Unless we can convince AT&T or Samsung to hand over the keys it's going to be a long wait (if ever) before we find a means to circumvent it's encryption.
What about us Mac users. Will Heimdall work with this?
mf3 tars
I have to say u are a life saver! I thought my phone was bricked for sure. thanks
Can someone please re upload this, MEGA keeps stopping in middle of downloading.

I will try uploading it to dev-host and then let Shockndrop add it to his OP if he wants. It may take a long time to upload as I an being throttled on my data right now and my WiFi is not much better. Plus I couldn't get dev-host to upload yesterday. Will let everyone know once it is uploaded.

To everyone using Mega, I thought it was crapping out in the middle too, until I realize that Chrome wanted to ask permission to download large files. After I allowed that permission, everything works fine.
Works perfectly! Thanks a lot! Had been waiting for this from long time! :good:
