[Problem] Wifi connection loss while downloading big files - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi there!
I have some problems with wifi connection and since i thought, it is related with the rom i'm using i stated the problem in that thread. But other user also reported that problem, that's why i would like to start that thread to figure that out.
Problem: While downloading big files (in my case long podcasts with google listen) wifi connection breaks down unregulary (unfortunately google listen cannot resume a download).
What i tried:
- change wifi router encryption
- change wifi router
- change wifi channel
- used Google Listen and also GoodNews
- updated RADIO to 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14
- a Hero with original stock rom does not show this effect
- edit: set wifi-spleep-policy to "never"
When connection drops, logcat says:
(short log snippet)
Code:
06-16 09:59:02.214 E/wpa_supplicant( 334): Set_key: Wrong Key
06-16 09:59:02.214 E/wpa_supplicant( 334): Set_key: Wrong Key
06-16 09:59:02.214 E/wpa_supplicant( 334): Set_key: Wrong Key
06-16 09:59:02.214 E/wpa_supplicant( 334): Set_key: Wrong Key
06-16 09:59:02.214 E/wpa_supplicant( 334): Set_key: Wrong Key
06-16 09:59:02.214 V/WifiMonitor( 221): Event [CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys]
(see attachment for longer log)
What seems to be sure for now?
- Not wifi router related
- Not wifi encryption related
- Not app related
- Since another user stated, that he experienced this connection loss with another custom rom, it is perhaps not a rom specific problem. But i have here a Hero with stock rom, that works
I cannot tell what the error message from log "Set_key: Wrong Key" means.
Anybody out there with same problems? (post here all circumstances, especially your RADIO version)
Anybody with workarounds?
Any dev who is able and willing to dig deeper? ; )
I really hope we all together can figure that out. Thanks in advance!
Bye, Marc.
P.S.: I posted this in dev area, because i think this is a problem, that can only be solved by a hero-dev. I hope somebody can.

hm i have no solution but

should not be assumed

From my experience the Hero seems to hate WPA-PSK, frequent disconnections.
for troubleshooting change the encryption to WEP 128Bit
Download wifi analyzer from the market and find the a channel that isnt "cluttered" in your area. I normally find Channel 9 is the best.
alot of people dont have a clue about their router settings and are always set to auto which mainly use 1-6 in my experience.
if you have a Wireless N router then i would suggest trying B/G instead.
if you have problems downloading large files in the browser then a change of browser might help. Such as opera, skyfire or dolphin.
All the above may help but to be honnest i dont find the wifi on the hero to be great anyway

I changed my wifi encryption from WPA2 to WPA - same connection loss.
I also connected to my university wifi network (cisco router with 802.1x encryption, completely different) - same connection loss, same error message.

Haven't tried WEP yet (perhaps i will, just for the protocol), but using WEP is no option for me.
Also changed channel, finding best free channel with wifi analyzer - same connection loss.
I have problems with big files from podcasts and tried different podcast aggregators (google listen and goodnews so far) - same connection loss and error...
But thanks for your suggestions!! Anything else?

Things i've done today:
1. Updated router firmware (newer 11G wireless driver)
2. Changed router from mixed b/g to just g.
4. Ran wifi analyzer and selected uncongested channel on router
3. Gone back to latest radio: 63.18.55.06SU_6.35.17.03 on hero
Will report back in a few days if this has helped at all

That sounds, that you have just sporadic connection loss... right? My connection breaks down, EVERY time i download a big file (only the "when" is uncertain, that it will break down is almost sure).
Yeah, what i forgot to mention: wifi-sleep-policy is set to "never"...

Well 100mb file would cause me to restart/resume download at least once or twice.
I've tried the radio you mentioned in the OP and the newer one mentioned in my last post. If it's no good I'll try latest - 2 and so on.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Today i updated to 6.35.17.03 and i was so close to posting a "WTF", because my first 2 big downloads worked like a charm... 3rd one was interrupted as usual Error is not gone, but my first impression is, that connection loss appears a little less... i'm really wondering what triggers this error...
No one else with connection loss? Guys, post your configurations! we need to find commonalities!
Thanks! Bye, Marc.
Edit: downloaded around 600MB with latest radio and just 2 break downs... this would not be possible with the older radio... so it seems to be better, but not yet solved... strange.

I have no issues with wifi downloads.
using: Elelinux-7.1.0-Hero-v2.7 Android 2.3.4
Govenor: ondemand 19-710
Wifi: WPA2 PSK
latest radio driver

same problem without solution yet salsa and other htc roms the wifi works fine i wonder why not in the cm roms

Have you checked logcat? Do you get exactly the same error msg with E/wpa_supplicant?
I wonder who to ask to look at this problem... "unfortunately" not everyone seems to be affected.
Any ideas?

same here...
Elelinux-7.1.0-RC1-Hero-v2.9
63.18.55.06JU.6.35.09.26
The problem started after I wiped everything and reinstalled this rom.
By wiping everything I mean: wipe everything including a format of system, boot, data and cache. I formatted those partitions because I noticed that some fonts I installed several roms ago weren't wiped after a full wipe and factory reset. And since my hero was getting slower and slower i wanted to make sure all old stuf was gone.

I have this problem too, although I'm not on a Hero but an Incredible S (Incredible 2) but this also use to happen with my huawei tablet! Its very frustrating I can't download more than 5-6 mb before having to restart

I think it's more a ROUTER related problem:
1. Use only B or G, no mixmode
2. i Use as encryption wpa and get no problem
3. try flashing a new kernel, maybe it's a kernel related problem
Stefan

Which router is used?
Also you can try switch wifi channel.

Problems gone?
I just flashed Elelinux-7.1.0-RC1-Hero-v3.4 and it seems that my wifi problems are gone (nothing so far in two days of using).
Try it out and post your experiences!
Bye, Marc.

Hmm... i'm running now Elelinux v3.5 and have same problem again... anyone else?
With next opportunity i will check if v3.4 makes the difference... but strange though...

Have you checked if the wifi sleep policy on the phone is set to "never"?

I've always got the same error on the stock rom and VillainRom 13 - figured it was just the WiFi turning off while the screen was turned off for power saving. In retrospect that was maybe a stupid assumption...

[Q] Strange Wi-Fi issue.

I have a strange problem about Wi-Fi. I tried every single Android Build in this forum, and i'm still having it.
The problem is, my Wi-Fi network is works like a charm with Sense builds, every Sense build. Without exception. But with the stock builds, it's just stops connecting to the internet(still vague?). I tried everything; static IP's, tried to make my network open... Nothing changed. Is there any solution for this, or the problem is just my network???
btw, i can reach router's homepage (192.168.0.1), i just cant access to the internet.
I'm pretty sure you problem has been covered elsewhere (although I cant be certain..."It just stops working" is a bit vague)....
But, searching for "wifi" problems might not be very benneficial soo I will try to help instead of flaming you like i normally might
Which channel is your router using???
From what I recall some builds will not recognise the higher channels (11, 12 and 13 I think).
So if your router is on channel 11 or higher I would try a lower number
If thats not the problem then I dunno....its back to searching for you
yes, that was 11. so i tried 10,7,5,2... nothing changed. still i can reach to router's homepage but not internet. it doesn't make sense
guys, please help me. i'm still trying to solve it. i tried every single rom published today too. cyanogens, not cyanogens...
-i also upgrade my radio from 2.10 to 2.11.

[Q] How to allow incoming TCP connections (WebDroid, SSHDroid, etc.)?

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone knows how to make Android open the ports necessary for incoming connections for server apps to work without having to ping the client first under su?
Or failing that, is there a way to run a script that will ping the client IP instead of having to run the command by hand in terminal?
Thanks!

Second that! Something's off in 99/100 ROMS, TCP doesn't seem to do anything. Only one Sense ROM by cotulla seems to work.
I disabled the adblocking hosts file to test if it had anything to do with it (e.g. SSHDroid doesn't work with it) but that didn't help anything either
Agreed, does not seem to work on any rom I've tried, only Cotulla's 'Stock Desire' Sense build seems to work (this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620).
Too bad Sense's so completely dire, otherwise I'd use that. I want CyanogenMOD.
Having the same question. I am sure here must be someone who knows how to enable inbound connections....
Little update:
I noticed it is possible for me to ping and use all services when using the gateway to access everything, in my case the access point/wifi router.
So it looks like this is some kind of routing/firewall issue but I can't find anything about default blocking or firewalling on android...
Good news. I found out what is causing this on almost every build.
It has something to do with the stock wifi tethering. If you try and enable it in almost every rom it will fail, but now turn on your wifi again and everything works as it would normally do!
The build it does work on also has working stock wifi tethering, so that explains that...
For now it's good to have this workaround and I hop to have a proper fix in the future
im using RAFDROID 3.0 and i dont think i have this problem at all. I tried SwiFTP and it connected without any issues.
Try to update the busybox version mine is 1.15.2

I tried this on Frankinstine's awesome ROM, but no cigar. There has to be a firewall rule or setting we can tweak to allow this kind of traffic...

It works for me, but it's not 100% foolproof. It seems to work for a while, but not permanently. However, it's still better than the ping method. The ping method would never work for me, since I use Wifi at least 4 different places a week. Even when done automatically, how would I know what to ping on what Wifi network?! Random DHCP on workstations notwithstanding...
This does it for me:
turn on normal Wifi
wait around 10 seconds (for Wifi to 'start')
turn on Wifi hotspot (normal wifi should turn it self off automatically)
wait around 20 seconds (the hotspot takes a while to 'start', it actually fails (error) for me, but still does the trick)
turn normal Wifi on again
At that point it "works" for me, at least for a while.
At the very least this seems to indicate that the broken Wifi hotspot and this problem are related -- on Cotulla's build (where stock Wifi hotspot WORKS), this problem is non-existent.
Unfortunatly your steps do not work for me :-(

That's unlucky. Those steps seem to "work" for me on CleanDroid 1.30. Maybe we can just hope it works again when the stock wifi hotspot is fixed.
Alternate "solution":
Get Cotulla's "Stock Desire" ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893620
It definitely works on that. Too bad sense is dog****, and your battery will last for a day max.

Just tried this and it worked. As soon as I started the wifi the second time my computer started pinging HD2.
My usual procedure for fixing this was to start wifi, see assigned IP address and then ping my computer from 'Net Ping' app. This can be faster sometimes.
Is there a way to port hotspot from Cotulla's build to a nonSense build? No way for me to come back to sense again

Don't know, it's probably in the kernel, so shouldn't be too difficult, but then again, I haven't really got a clue about building ROMs.

[probably solved] but [Q] Wifi drops off help!! Seriously!

Hi,
I have an irritating problem. When i'm surfing the internet, watching youtube or using the xda app (even more apps I guess) my phone just doesn't receive internet connection anymore. I have to turn my wifi off and on again to make it work for 5-15 minutes. If I don't use the internet for one hour or two it works normally for 5-15 minutes but then it also drops off. (my wifi is then still on, it has connection but doesn't receive anything). Maby it has to deal with the count of mb's i'm using... This only happens with me at home and since we have a new wifi router. But this only happens with my phone and not with my laptop or wii. So I hope this can be fixed. Do I have to change anything to my phone or to my wifi router?
Tnx in advance
Nobody faced this problem also?
I am having the same problem.Which firmware u using.
I am facing this problem in DDJP2 as well as DDJP4.
I'm using t-mobile's firmware: bojpc.
But I remembered I had the same issue a long time ago with a friend when I was using eclair...
i have the same prob in kirillos 6.1 and i think with every rom ive had from time to time
Maby it has to deal with the security settings of the router... with what kinda password ( wpa, wpa2 etc.) is your router protected?
Mine with: WPA/WPA2 PSK

ok back from holiday i tried to fix my wifi router but i can't find b/g/n and wireless radio anywhere in the online settings...
Even in my phone, sometimes WiFi won't turn on. It tries for 5 minutes, the says "Wifi error". I have to again select to get it working.
i have this problem as well...
i'm quite sure, that the router is okay, because my laptop is in the same room and has no problems.
any solutions?
This problem is worse than ever right now! Wifi drops all the time to 5mbp/s i'm getting crazy!!!
Is there any possible way I can solve this without a factory reset? I'm starting to hate my phone...
even i had the same problem in all ROMs.
still couldn't find any solution

Wifi problems with 802.11 N + PEAP Authentication
Hi folks!
Here in my university we have a Network called Eduroam (www.eduroam.org , probably you've already heard about it).
The Hotspots are N capable, so my phone, if connected, shows a speed of 65 Mbps. For the authentication, we use MSCHAP v2. So far, so good...
Now to the things I experienced: @ home, where I use a 802.11g network, everything seems to be ok.
Here in the university it's not. Sometimes it needs a really long time to connect to the network, and sometimes it drops the connection just shortly after. Switching off and on again speeds up the process a lot.
But now to the worst part: Often, the connection is shown as established ('Connected'), but in reality there is no connection: No mail connection, no HTTP connection, ping doesn't go through... nothing. Even it shows it is still connected.
Now I am not sure if this issue is caused by the autentication or the N Network , but I can say two things for sure:
1. My laptop, when connected to the same network with the same parameters works fine.
2. It has been working fine up to the transition from Android 2.3.5 to 2.3.7.
I'm running cm7-20111021-NIGHTLY-Milestone2-ICS-pre_stable-v1.5 on a A953, but was also experiencing those issues on builds before that one.
I'd have loved to post this into the developement thread, because I have already seen someone describing a simmilar issue (less detailed unfortunately), but I can't due to the 10 posts minimum rule.
Best regards and thanks for that great port, Endless !

I'd have loved to post this into the developement thread, because I have already seen someone describing a simmilar issue (less detailed unfortunately), but I can't due to the 10 posts minimum rule.
Best regards and thanks for that great port, Endless !

Probably you can try switching off the N network from your phone. Force it to connect through G.
This post might help you.

It basically disables n network from Milestone 2
You can give it a shot.
I delete all my wifi connections, reboot the cell and work all good..

Hi everyone,
yesterday I was it my friend and tried to connect to his access point. He has b/g AP with WPA2 password protection & DHCP enabled. But when I tried to connect it kicked me off in authetication state and tried to connect again - but without success. I tried to disable and enable wifi, deleting saved connection, but nothing of this helped me.
I'm using CM7 - does anyone have similiar or same problem - connecting to WPA2-PSK wifi? I'm using WPA at home and it works ok - I just want know if it is global problem with CM7 on Milestone 2 or just me (or just this AP) and what solutions can i try.
Thanks for suggestions.
I know it is not here but my phone is locked in airplane mode!

It always happens to me on my uncle's house. His wifi is WPA2 and has such a BIG password, but when I try to connect the phone acts as if nothing happened...
I think it's a global problem with Milestone 2, because it didn't work in any Rom, Froyo/CM7/GB/MIUI.

[Q] WiFi Problem in XBmod Yuki (Updateable WP 7 Mango ROM for HD2)

Hi guys.
I have an issue with WiFi in this WP7 ROM. They say that you can fix it by lowering the channel of your router, and there are 2 fixes (CAB packages) that are supposed to fix wifi or something.
My problem is that, even after applying the fixes and lowering my router channel I am STILL unable to enter my network. My problem before was that I cannot see the network at all, but lowering the channel seemed to fix that. However now I can see, but not Join my network. It is password secured and it is NOT mac filtered.
My router channel is 1
I have tried both fixes and neither have worked
I have hard reset countless times
I have run task 29 countless times and reflashed
WiFi works in neither 7004 or 7720
Funny thing is, that for a very short period of time I got the WiFi to Work and that was when I first lowered my channel to 1. I have tried several channels, but NONE worked. In the begining when I flashed the ROM for the first time ever WiFi worked, I upgraded to mango, and when I activated the Live services it stopped working (after a reboot). The next time I got it to work was when I lowered the channel of the router to 1.
This is weird and I don't know what to do. I could not find anyone with my problem anywhere!
P.S. The messege I get is something like: Your phone couldn't connect to the network Gratis Internett (my network) because there was no response from the network.
Same problem here.
My device don't detect Home Wi-FI, only the neighbors wi-fi.
Strange Think.
Sometimes, I Restarted de reuter... to detect and connect without problem. But if for any reason I turn wi-fi off... i've to restart... and restar again.
I apply the WI-FI fix EU. No difference
i have a diffferent problem with the wifi. I disable my wifi on my phone and my data slows down. i enable and it moves regular any fix for this?

It might be that your wifi is faster than your phone. Don't know if it helps but if you install advanced config you can add a 3G toggle, and enable wifi n mode, but DO NOT try to prevent phone from relocking (you will lose all xaps)

My problem was that it didn't detect the network. I fixed that by lowering the channel of my router. My current problem it is that the phone REFUSES to connetct to my network!

Do you have set up access control on your router?
Because the MAC-Issue (random MAC on every reboot) is still not fixed.
I was investigating on this issue but I'm still not able to create my own cabs...

Do you mean like mac filtering? I made it clear in my top post that I DO NOT have mac filtering on!
It's funny, but restarting my router was something i forgot to try. It fixed my issue...for now...
EDIT: Oh my god! I have reboot my phone and WIFi still works! Wonder for how long...
EDIT 2: I have reboot my phone once more, but this time it stopped working. I will just have to reboot the router every time I reboot the phone. -_-

Even if you said you have no mac filtiering, it seems to has something to do with the changing mac 'cause that's what changes after a hd2 reboot...
Does your router have an option that sets a maximum number of cennected clients? - 'cause it maybe calculates the number based on the mac...

Now that's a whole different thing. Since the router is our Home router, I don't have 100% control over it (I'm the 14 year old son ^^) and my dad knows that. I'll ask and tell you what I find out. Thanks for this suggestion.
And did you (or your dad ) get it working?

It wasn't the issue.
Hmm, I'm sure you did it already but have you tried some other wifi devices? Or another OS on your phone (Android,WinMo)?
The issue is quite confusing... Anyway, the last option I can think of is to reflash wp7...
PS: If you want to test it with android, dualboot would be the best option...

I have had and I currently do have Android on my Device. It's WP7 that makes the issue, not the device. It works like a charm on cyanogenmod7!
I found a solution for this.. the issue here is not the phone.. the issue was the router. the best way to end this issue is to reset the configuration of your router.
