Evenings!
My girlfriend recently purchased a Galaxy 3 and I've noticed its running android 2.1, when Samsung mobile shows its capable of 2.2. I'm interested in flashing one of the samfirmware roms but I'm completely new to the Samsung way of doing things (my own phone is a HTC Desire running oxygen 2.1.3) .
Kies doesn't offer any updates, so I know I'm going to need to do this a different way, but I'm not entirely sure which rom to go with.
The handsets current details are as follows:
PDA: I5800XXJG7
PHONE: I5800XXJG3
CSC: I5800XXJG5
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend XWJPF. It's good and stable. After flashing you can root and deodex phone and install some new theme

Hello
You can use my rom if you want. Take a look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957123
I am glad to help you if you find any problem.
Regards,
Kyrillos
Been having a look at custom roms and I'm definitely interested in your rom, but its my girlfriends phone just want to get her up to date for now
If she lets me play with it a bit further I will definitely start with your rom
If I'm sticking to stock roms, does it matter which one I go for? And is there anything I need to specifically do to avoid bricking the phone ?
I have the ops file and the update, I'll get the one suggested above also but I need to wipe and install using Odin in download mode? God this seems complicated.. lol

The only chance to brick your phone is using a samsung's rom with bootloaders (~1% chance for bricking). Using any custom rom, you will be fine. Try my rom. She will like it
The flashing process is only complicated the first time. With 3-4 flashes you will do it easily.
Kyrillos
Will your rom flash alright over her firmware?

Yes.

I gave her the choice and she wanted stock Samsung first, so I flashed jpm since a lot of custom roms seem to be based on that. Sorry dude!
If she changes her mind I'll choose yours first

Yes roms in the developement section here can all usually be flashed through cwm unless otherwise stated. And I've never needed to unroot, but odin is a windows gui for flashing tar's(which are roms usually official and modems). You use Odin when you want to go back to complete stock, or modems usually. You can do other things with Odin such as flash custom recoveries like cwm. Odin is your bestfriend if you mess something up, always make sure to use a premium blackberry or other thick cable besides the one that came with the phone when using odin.(most people have difficulties with stock cable.)

if you read my last threads you will know i mashed my other note to pieces....
on my desire i would flash roms 3 each week without messing the phone up, so after messing up my note through formatting through cwm while on ics i am a little/lot scared about doing it again..
so i want a little help if you guys would be so kind
i dont have the new phone with me right now, but this time i am going to learn how NOT to brake the phone before i start playing with it.
so could you please walk me through this, explain to me as you would explain to a child LOL
so as i understand it, i need to keep to gingerbread then root it, go into recovery and flash the rom from there? do i use the normal phone recovery to do this or do i have to install cwm?
i am a little worried about using cwm again tbh, or can i use mobile odin?
i want to know the easiest way, the most fool proof....
damn i was never this worried with my desire.
your probably thinking "if you are so scared then why bother" right? its just the phone is so damn laggy, even compared to my desire which was built by cave men
cheers for the help guys, asuming i get some ofcourse :fingers-crossed:
Start from a gingerbread rom, then fully root it and install clockworkmod, next boot into recovery(volume up+power+home button together). First flash paranoid android rom then flash gapps, lastly wipe data, cache partition and dalvik cache. Reboot and enjoy

Yes, you can flash from one of the supposedly known safe ics kernels to speed the process up BUT if you want to be 100% safe in flashing to any cm9, start with a gingerbread rom.

So is it still okay to root through cwm and then use mobile odin? Are there any decent roms out yet that have decent s pen usage?

I also just received my note from samsung after bricking it with CWM. I am so afraid I might brick it again trying to install paranoid android since I have to wait nearly a month to have my phone back in case anything happen.
Just one question, as long as I'm on paranoid android, can I just format or factory reset my phone through settings or recovery or cwm safely? Thanks a lot.

If you want to install paranoid, its cm based which means no touchwizz apps will work on it as they need the touchwizz framework. That being said, s pen still works fine and there are plenty of alternatives to the s apps (papyrus, memo etc). Also I've read that one of the devs is working on getting the s apps onto cm9 somehow, but not sure who or how its going. Also the cm9 kernel included for the rom is safe from the superbrick bug as its has the cap wlerase command disabled.
PA has a slightly different installation to other roms. I would highly recommend first installing stock rootable gb, root it and install cwm. Once that's in place perform factory reset.
Then download paranoid and g apps and copy them to external SD card.
Then FROM CWM recovery, you flash pa first by "installing zip from SD card", then do the same for g apps straight afterwards.
If you have any fc's or issues, enter back into cwm recovery and wipe cache and dalvik.
Boom, ready to go for full on paranoia
Its a truly great rom, very customisable and as ics should be.

The safe kernel is included in the pa rom, cm9 kernel. So long as you flash it from cwm in gb you're fine it installs it automatically.
Think mobile Odin is only a paid for app... well worth it though. Check the forum, chainfire usually releases free versions to xda community.

A lite version of Mobile Odin can be downloaded from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899

If you asked me. I like the stock firmware not cm9 paranoid. Because you will lose your S-Memo, S-Note and S-Planner and also your myfiles and also the MHL. All of this features are important for me. Paranoid is cool firmware but you will loose this apps...

Now as far as any OTA updates i want/need, what is the protocol in getting them?
You can't get them on a custom rom
I forget what I read on a custom recovery and rooted--getting older--
I think you need to go back to stock--someone can confirm
I haven't Googled that yet either
There were some rootkeeper apps that were used on my other phones, don't know what works here
I never took OTA's after rooted and flashing my other phones as dev's seemed to have updates faster than my carrier

Generally, the newer firmware versions that get pushed out as OTA updates will be incorporated into custom Touchwiz roms, such as ShoStock and Mint Jelly. However, if you flash CyanogenMod or any other AOSP-based rom such as SlimBean or AOKP, OTA updates will be completely meaningless. It's a different world altogether.
Either way, my advice is the same: Don't mess with OTA's. At best, they could give you the same features as a custom rom. At worst, they could kill the Loki exploit and lock your bootloader for good.
Just purchased my G2 yesterday and am shocked at the amount of development being done. So far I am loving it. Speed and data for me are insane. I'm already rooted however still researching recovery options. Something is telling me this phone is a pain to flash. But Evert if that is the case the HTC one S was a pain also and there was still tons of development being done. I'm I missing something?

Agreed. Especially the VS980. Development has been very slow and there are only a handful of 4.4 ROMs for it. The casual flashers will continue to praise the "quick development", but the avid crack flashers are, I'm sure, disappointed by the slow updates.
Also just my thoughts and observation. I support the ROMs I use by donating, but I don't know how to to develop.
There's only a handful of 4.4 ROMs for every phone. Carbon, AOKP and PAC aren't doing many nightlys now because of the 4.3 to 4.4 switch. When they get ROMs more stable for us we'll see more of them rolling out.
