I did a forum search but couldn't find anything, although it looks like a lot of Hero users are having the same issue since installing Android 2.1.
Does anybody know of a way to change the mode of operation on the phone to 1x only? I've got an Airave at home because I get wildly inconsistent EVDO coverage, so my phone is often switching between the two. I'd like to be able to just set it to 1x only while at home to help the battery life, but the setting doesn't appear to be in the Mobile Network menu anywhere.
Is there any other way of doing this?
I don't see anything for that setting either, weird
This is my first Android phone, but as near as I can tell from searching on the issue, it just looks like Android 2.1 removed access to that setting across the board. I suppose it could be worse... it looks like Hero users who were set to 1x only before upgrading to 2.1 are now locked into it, with no apparent way to change it back.
I imagine there's probably some "backdoor" way of getting to the setting, but I'm way too new to Android to have any idea how to accomplish that.
If you have WiFi at home you're better off using that since it uses less battery than 3g or 1x. That's what I do at home.
I forgot to add I'm using WiFi in conjunction with the airrave.

But using wifi won't stop the phone from constantly switching between EVDO and 1x, will it? It's the radio constantly trying to hold onto that weak EVDO signal that I want to stop.
Well, I can confirm that using wifi does not prevent the phone from trying to grab a 3G signal, so all that's really doing is adding to the battery drain rather than helping it.
I tried changing the EVDO Preferred Mode in the ##DATA# menu after getting my MSL code from Sprint, but it still keeps trying to hop onto 3G even after commiting the changes and rebooting. Sigh. Here's hoping one of the devs figure something out.
Hi,
I am wondering if anybody has similar problems with wifi - 3g/data connection works perfectly, but when I am connected over wifi, after sometime the connection dies and I have to disable wifi and enable it again, in order to restore network access. I hoped that froyo would fix that, but as there is no froyo on the horizon I decided to ask.
The phone firmware is 2.1 update1

Yes I get this too. The connection is still active but many apps suddenly decide to notify me that I need a WiFi/3G connection before I can use them. Turning WiFi off and back on fixes it. This also happens on my branded Desire running 2.1, which may imply it is related to the router settings. I will have to test on other routers. My WLAN is configured to 802.11g only, WPA2-PSK only (WPA-PSK and 802.11b not allowed) on channel 13.
actually great to know that i'm not the only one. i get this all the time, and i even emailed htc about this and response was retarded. they told me how to connect to my router. i tried pretty much everything on this issue. connect and reconnect, change channel from 13 to 11 or 14, nothing seems to be working. hopefully 2.2 will change all this.

i think the htc legend has the worst wifi reception for all phones of 300 $
havent noticed a single improvement with every update
I had this problem with my first legend. The touch screen malfunctioned so I brought it back and got a replacement. The new one is much better. I am very happy with it.
For instance, in my home office I could never connect with my first legend, it would say association failed when trying to associate with the AP. On my new one it works and I've had it sitting on the desk now for about 4 hours and I picked it up and unlocked it and the wifi worked immediately.
I very occasionally had this until I switched the wifi sleep policy to never after reading somewhere that it would actually increase battery life and haven't had this problem since. Not noticed any difference with battery life though I only switch wifi on when I need it and off when I'm finished.

For what it's worth, I have the same problem and I'm sure it's related to my phone, not the routers.
I hade no problems with this before my last OTA update...

im thinking that it might be the aluminium case that shield the antenna because reception is unbeliavable bad
im curious to know if desire/nexus mount the same wifi antenna as legend
if you put static ip it works perferct for me

I only have a problem very occasionally with wifi, maybe once per month, and I think this has more to do with my crappy router than anything else.
I have the same problem with WiFi cutting out afters while even when the phone hasn't been moved and when its situated inches from the router
Sent from my HTC Legend using XDA App
Generally it is not good idea to have router and client too close together. That way radio noise increases and that's not good.
Thanks for the tip. but it does it downstairs too when Im watching TV the phone is well away from all electrical appliances, after toggling wifi bOFF/ON I get full signal strength.
Same here. After a few minutes normal browsing on Wifi, pages seem get so far then refuse to load. Only solution is to turn WiFi off then re-connect. The WiFi permission is set to never sleep. I'm not rooted and running stock wwe 2.3 ruu.

Anybody have any ideas how to resolve this issue? It's really frustrating having to re-connect wifi every 5 mins. Possibly to do with debranding to stock wwe 2.3 ruu from Vodafone?

looking forward to getting rid of this phone once I get my htc desire z, HTC doesn't seem to care about it since the only recent OTA they released made it worse
I would like to know if anyone else is having this problem,
to me it is something related to 2.3.4 and maybe I9020XXKD1 radio, i had this problem with the stock 2.3.4 rom as well.
Since I9020XXKD1 baseband update (2.3.4),
i started having a problem of VERY SLOW connection to Google Sync accounts (grey->green bars) when switching from cellular data (2G or 3G) to WiFi (router at home or at office). When i activate WiFi, the 3G indicator will disappear, signal bars goes GREY and then it takes up to 40seconds to reestabilish connections to Google (green bars). During this time phone has no connectivity (you cannot use facebook, twitter, browser etc...). This is clearly a problem switching between cellular data and Wifi, infact putting the Nexus S in Airplane mode and activating/deactivating WiFi, the reconnection is immediate (switch between GREY/GREEN bars takes 2-3 seconds). Any others having the same problem? It did not happen to me with old 2.3.3 i9020xxkb1 baseband.
If i go back to 2.3.3 rom (either stock or Cyanogenmod 7.0.3) and baseband i9020xxkb1 PROBLEM IS SOLVED
If you have the same issue please star or add comments to

I am also experiencing this issue with 2.3.4 and I9020XXKD1. When I wake up the phone (after being idle in my pocket for a while) and it automatically switches from 3G to wifi, the wifi icon remains grey for an inordinate if not indefinite amount of time and data connection is interrupted (even after phone has acquired an IP). I have to toggle Wifi on and off from the to get it to connect.
From Google's release notes:
- Wi-fi & 3G icons both indicate active: for anyone who saw this strange behavior in your phone’s status bar, it should now be fixed. (Nexus S)
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=62b9e23a049f4ef0
Could it be that in resolving that issue they introduced the bug we are now experiencing?
Possibly an issue with DNS queries?
Might be from the change to the https sync protocol to keep our data secure

i still find this behaviour very irritating... i wonder if we are making something wrong and others are not getting any trouble.
Could someone who has stock 2.3.4 or AOSP / Cyanogenmod Nighly roms confirm they are not getting any problem with WiFi when switching from cellular data or exiting standby (reconnection to WiFi)?
I am still experiencing wait to up to 1 minute to get a green WiFi indicator.

This might be simple and you may have already done it, but try changing your WiFi channel at the router.
I was getting ****ty speed on both my Evo running CM7 (nightly 80 which is 2.3.4) and my NS4G running rooted stock GRJ22. I made my router choose channel 2 (rather than auto-selecting a channel which always seemed like channel 11).
That led to an IMMEDIATE increase in speed - over 100% better - from avg 5Mbit dls to 11Mbit on both devices.

The same problem happens at home and at work but only with the 234 upd. Now i'm back to 233 and i'm ok, so the problem is surely related to 234 upd nothing else, at least for me...
And i'm not claiming about speed, but high delays in getting wifi connectivity (from grey to green) , either activating it manually or exiting from screen-off

on one after update on 2.3.4 WIFI connection signal is like 2-3 bars
(1 meter from AP) And disconnect every few minutes from AP. (I know this because playing some game online and bother me so much).
Other phone is fine ((( Work like charm. Full signal and wifi work just fine.
I noticed that on the stock 2.3.4 but it seems to be instant switch on CM 7.1 rc1.

The one thing that's keeping me from fully enjoying my new Nexus 4---hassles with radios, both wifi & cellular.
1) On my home wifi network on all devices except the Nexus 4 I see solid, constant download speeds of 25Mbps. My Nexus 4 consistently only gives me 4-6Mbps. If I disconnect/reconnect sometimes I can see speeds slightly higher than that, but only temporarily. This isn't generally a huge deal because 4-6Mbps is fast enough for most things on a phone, it just bugs me that every other device in the house gets 25Mbps.
2) Of bigger annoyance is my cellular data connection, it drops off multiple times per day. The cellular signal strength indicates full bars, along with the 'H' icon indicating I'm connected to T-Mobiles HSPA+ network. Voice still works fine but the data connection is dead--nothing will connect--Speedtest, maps, Google Search, Facebook, etc. This forces me to either turn on/off Airplane mode or reboot the phone completely to regain my cellular data connection. On my previous SGS2 I never experienced this issue. It drives me nuts to not be able to pull up a phone number, directions etc at the times I need it most.
Does anybody have any similar experiences or suggestions on how to remedy these issues?
Edit---FYI I'm fully stock but rooted. 4.2.1 update not yet applied.
1) Check APN settings and make sure your account is properly provisioned by calling T-Mo CSRs. I had a similar issue with my Nexus One back in the day that was fixed with a reboot after they reprovisioned my account.
2) Flash factory image, in case it was a bad flash of the radio. It happens.
3) If 1 & 2 fails, or you don't want to try #2, call the Nexus hotline and get yourself a replacement.

Called TMobile and had them reset my account, I'll keep an eye on it the next couple of days.
Right now I'm downloading a cached Google map via WiFi and it is slooooow.
I also notice on edge the signal is inconsistent.
Hi
The Wi-Fi issue is something happening to others, seems to be a driver bug.

Did you ever find a cure for this? I am having the exact same issues on my O2UK Nexus 4, anytime I want to use the data connection its almost guaranteed not to work and involve reboots, Airplane mode on and off etc
Im having the same issues. My data just drops wifi and cellular. I dont get full signal wifi or cellular. I live in india and flashed the latest .54 which was released in india recently. I managed to at least get cellular data going but my strength still low and data drops still on both wifi and cellular. Its super frustrating. Any ideas?
try reflashing the OS on your phone and try changing the wifi channel on your router.
changing the channel on my wireless router really helped signal to all of my devices. there may be lots of interference on the channel you're on.

I may reflash OS but i just got the phone today so ill slow down a bit. I flashed the radio one would think that would be enough? Anyway I have many other devices on my wifi without an issue and i used wifi analyser and theres no overlap with other routers and i experience this on 2g 3g and wifi so it looks like some modem problem. Unfortunately the phone was bought 3 months ago in the States and im here in india so im kind of stuck
There are known issues with the Nexus 4 wifi speeds slowing for no apparent reason. Also, known issues with the LOS (loss of signal). You can find information and bug reports on both of these issues.

Pretty bad. I ran a test a few weeks ago and I can go up to 450 feet from my router (old Linksys) without a problem, and after that it gets iffy, and finally disconnects at 500 feet. I am seeing an average of 20 Mbps on wifi. Now if I can only get my cellular connection (non-wifi) to go faster than 1 Mpbs max I would have a usable phone.
I have a slightly diff issue.
If I reboot my phone, I connect to my router no problem. If I turn wifi off (to save battery) and then turn it back on.... it shows my AP's as out of range.... but I do see my neighbours AP's. I also have an N10 with has no issues at all with wifi (and none of my other divises have issues either).
When I bought the N4 they seemed to be having an issue with it when setting it up.... but I was not paying close attention. I am wondering if I have a bad phone on top of the "normal" wifi issues that other are experiencing.
Think I will revert back to stock and swap it for another phone to see if I can at least just turn off / on the wifi rather then reboot to connect (how sad is that?)

My N4 has no issues at all with it. Connects when I want it to right away and is fast / solid connection.
Hi guys. I've looked around and it seems that data drops are fairly common as of lately. I would like to find out what exactly the problem is.
Here's my situation. Data drops first occurred about a week ago, I was running RBJ and Harsh kernel with hsic fix in. Mainly it happens when exiting wifi range. Went back to nandroid with RBJ/Bricked and it was fine. Tried harsh again issue reappeared. Tried flashing pre hsic kernels and problem persisted. Full wipe, dirty flashes, different kernels etc. Problem is still there intermittently. Now I'm running stock everything and it seems ok for now, but I did experience it once. I guess more testing is needed. I'd think it could be carrier issues, especially as Orange UK confirmed they are having problems at (that would include T-Mobile) but my wife is on the same carrier and doesn't seem to have this problem.
So what you say? What rom/kernel combo you had issue on and on which one you didn't? Can anyone see a pattern?
Problem first appeared:
RBJ
HARSH
Orange UK
West London
As suggested per _ICE_

Simply everyone put the same commits in their kernels and therefore caused them all to fail. Those HSIC fix broke other stuff too which is why everyone was reporting the samething. They've been reverted in CM and Franco and other kernels.

I'd agree that it was the case if it didn't keep happening after going back to complete stock via flashing images.

I doubt it is a sim issue. I get the same thing when I am in different areas of my house. Living room is great but the master bedroom and media room give me data drops. Have you tested to see if maybe this is the same thing happening to you? Certain areas causing it?
My phone will have full bars and show the H but out of nowhere I see the data drop, buts its only in certain areas. It has never happened in the living room where I spend most of my time. Oh and I am not on WiFi because I disconnected Time Warners crappy service and am waiting for Verizon to come set up if anyone is wondering why I was using data instead of Wifi .

Same issue here, it's driving me nuts.
The problem is, I have full service and with a data connection with a H.
Whenever I use an app or anything that would use the data connection, it wouldn't work. It just won't work. It does this, sometimes and sometimes in certain areas.
Say I have full service with a strong data connection, I'll use instagram and refresh, the arrows for data connection won't be there and nothing will show.
It does this constantly. I'm running the stock rom with Franco's r23 kernel. It's been doing this with the stock kernel as well. Using T-Mobile in NYC
It's quite annoying, and I really don't want to wipe and or flash another rom as it happens once in a while.

I only noticed the data drop issue recently, but that might be because I'm on wifi the vast majority of the time. Undercover - I'm experiencing basically the same issue as you are, however my data signal seems to reconnect itself after about 15-20 seconds.
Running stock rooted ROM, motley kernel here, UVed quite a bit, though I don't know if that would cause any problems. Will try changing some APN settings tomorrow and see what happens
When having been connected to wifi overnight and leaving the wifi area, the phone does not switch over to mobile data. The signal bars stay grey.
I have to toggle airplane mode, and then it connects fine. Another fix is to search for provider and reconnect to the network (takes longer obviously)
Is this the same bug?

I get dropped/inconsistent signals as well but only in certain areas of my house or certain parts of the city I live in. I'll have a few bars of H and then poof no signal. I can almost predict when I'm going to run in to that little problem because my loading times and such will be all around slower. Even though I should have a fast connection according to my signal bars. During times when I'm experiencing fast download speeds my signal never falters. PS I'm completely stock, not unlocked, not rooted.
