We're about halfway into 2011. These days, it seems like all the new phones have no physical keyboards. At least, among the flagship devices. The Epic was the closest thing to a flagship keyboard phone recently, which was one of the biggest reasons I bought mine off ebay.
Do you think that the Epic and the Desire Z may represent some of the last high end phones with keyboards?
A few of the midrange devices still have them, but even then, the keyboard slider seems to be in decline. After trying swipe, better keyboard and a bunch of others, I found that SwiftKey was my favorite, but not a substitute for a physical keyboard.
Your thoughts?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Yea there will always be devices with keyboards ... companies can't just overlook those consumers who prefer a physical keyboard they will most likely put something out for them
I'm sure there will be another top end phone with a keyboard. With all the different manufacturers and models of phones that come out on a regular basis, a few have to have features that differentiate it from another model. In other words, there will be always a market for some people who do PREFER a physical keyboard.
Hold on, let me check my crystal ball...
I hate the trend that Apple started. A smartphone without a keyboard is not a smart one. Its like typing on an old flip phone. Now all the new phones have to look thin and all so the engineers cut the keyboard.
When I see a new phone comeout without a keyboard...its "nneeeexxxtttt" for me.

They seem to have cut the battery too. For just a couple millimetres, you could get perhaps 1,000 more mAh?

Adding 1000mah would make the phone a LOT more than "a couple millimeters" thicker. Just look at the Epic with the 2800mah back:

It nearly doubles the thickness of the phone and probably adds a lot of weight.
Maybe a centimeter? Perhaps a bit less looking at the image. I was thinking a partial redesign where the battery would be thinner, but the surface area bigger.
Either way, it seems these days ultra thin has become the trend, often at the expense of batteries and nowadays, the keyboard.

The original Droid had mostly stock Android but Google didn't handle the updates. As far as I know, the N1 and Nexus S are the only commercial phones to get official updates from Google. Motorola did do an incredibly good job at keeping the original Droid up to date though.
Any chance on rooting that bad boy or is it booby trapped like the other Motorolas.
I liked it and so far I'm liking honeycomb! Although I'm suprised you can do a lot on the phone without leaving the homescreen, like....it its pretty heavy but feels really sturdy I don't like the wake/ sleep button. Wake me when Sprint gets the next real smartphone without some 3D gimmick and a keyboard that real smartphones sport.
I'm really tired of people saying that only smartphones that have keyboards are "real smartphones". It's an incredibly ridiculous argument, a lot like saying only arcade games are "real games" when in reality it's all a matter of preference. Don't put people down just because you aren't willing to step out of your comfort zone to adapt to something new.
By the way, typed entirely on a virtual keyboard without any problem.

It's not just comfort, its usability. I'm sure I'm in the minority by using my phone to log into network equipment (switches, routers, firewalls, etc...) but it's next to impossible to get anything done using the software keyboard. Try typing something like "sh run | beg int gi12/25" or "crypto key gen rsa usag label key" or "sh ip rou 172.16.2.0" on a software keyboard vs the Epic hardware keyboard and tell me how usable the software keyboard is. Also, I don't like losing the real estate of my output display for an input device.

Is that your answer for every situation where you disagree with someone?
I have had my Epic since launch and I'm running the Clean GB rom and it's great. I really like the phone and have no problems with it. But, I know this phon will not last forever. I have to have a slide out keyboard because I have big fingers and typing on touch screen doesn't work very well. Plus I run my business for my phone so I have to type alot.
I just went to sprints site and I see they didn't kill the epic like was reported before. But, I don't see any new flagship sliders. Anyone know of any new flagship sliders on the way in the next 6 to 8 months? I'm open to all brands or os. Thanks
I'd like to know if anyone has information as well. I don't plan on buying any other phone for awhile, unless a new high-end sprint slider comes out. Which won't probably happen soon, since they're keeping the epic on the line cause they have nothing new coming, where with the EVO they had like 2 news ones already lol.

Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I like the Samsung Note, looks cool. Even if it is the size of a small country.
I want LTE, that's really the only requirement I have for a new phone. Bigger screen would be nicer, and I'd like a platform that's easily rooted. When I bought my Epic and Moment, I didn't really pay attention to that but now I think it'll be what I look at first. No point in having an uber cool phone if I'm stuck stock.
But I lubs my epic....I won't be leaving it soon.
Im am also hoping for a Sprint version of the Note, or anything with a similar sized display. I know some dont like the screen size, but I would love it! I would probably be willing to go up to 6 inches for an Android phone and happily still fit it in my pocket.

honestly the lte galaxy has peeked my interest, I had figured I'd wait for SG3 but once I saw that announcement I was like ... hmmmmmm my one real dislike on my phone is the speed of the internet (or lack there of) so the LTE is a huge pull for me.
I really like having the keyboard but with the larger screen the virtual kb should be much easier to use and I already use swype more than the hardware keyboard anyway.

What announcement are you referring to? Is the SGS3 going to be a non LTE phone?
I have an upgrade in July(Got the epic the week it came out). I'm looking at the Nexus, but I feel like I should hold off for a little.
I don't know yet, I have grown to not depend on the KB as much as I use to, so maybe the Nexus.
Thinking about going for the Nexus as my next phone.. but then again I may just wait a bit to see what great LTE phones come out.
I'm also interested in the nexus because it is so open. Specs aren't that hot but unless your a gamer the gpu isn't a huge deal. Should get full cm9 and miui support pretty fast as opposed to waiting many months.
Sgs3 will likely be next gen hardware, but waiting for updates, and the seeming lack of organization and inability to fix issues (key skip, gps anyone?) Makes non nexus hardware a tough sell.
If a top tier phone focused on battery life (ala razor maxx) launched on sprint, that would also be very tempting. But would have to have an unencrypted boot loader.
Sent from my SPH-D700 running CM7
Given how Samsung has treated the Galaxy S line with updates, I'm not so forgiving. I think I am going with the galaxy nexus when it comes out. That way I can get instant updates.
Thinking about getting the galaxy nexus when it comes to sprint. However I am perfectly happy with my epic on virgin mobile for the time being.
Next phone - Something loved by CM devs and/or obligatory Nexus device.
.... But with CM9 coming to the Epic I'm thinking I might be okay to just run with this phone until it dies.

I find the hardware to be quite good (although by the standards of today, I wouldn't mind a faster processor), but I find the software to be buggy and incomplete at best (EVEN EL30), which is sad considering how many chances that they had to make this a good device. Stuff like the GPS and other assorted issues makes me really shake my head in disappointment with Samsung.
Ive been saying that since I bought it.
Everywhere I go people still compliment and ask what phone is that. I don't know how much longer I will have this phone but I'm also not countig the days down unlike when I had my POS moment.

Considering it was supposed to be a Bada device, I think the devs had to get to the Android party late. I'd expect that translating the software to the hardware was the original issue but it seems to be more under control and may have lead to extended life for the device.
It was much faster than the evo. I loved my Epic. Perhaps the lack of froyo and gb is what made the Epic so much fun. Literally the only thing I would've changed is the responsiveness of the captivate buttons.

So, here we all are. Looking for the next big slider phone to move to. The Photon comes along and while some specs are great, overall most people hate the fact that the SIM is locked and that the battery is not removable. Some of us, maybe all, would probably settle for it, because the idea is that another slider will not come for a long period of time. HOWEVER, I just unearthed this article and honestly, I would recommend giving it a month before we all jump ship and buy into the Photon, if that is your plan at least.
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/05/01/google-patent-application-hints-at-nexus-slider/
Although this is NOT a confirmation, it is still in the realm of possibility. It is worth waiting for, before we lock ourselves onto the Photon for 2 years.
Any thoughts/comments/info?
There is some truth to Google bringing out a Nexus slider soon. Google hired the G1 designer duo, they also came up with the design for the Xbox360.
NICE!!!!!! I just sprouted a tremendous woody!!!!
Highly doubtful. I wouldn't hold my breathe. The only logical choice right now for keyboard lovers is the photon. Especially since Motorola released something similar to HTCdev to unlock the boot loader.

My thinking on the Q, is will there be development, more to the point, will it get picked up by CM
A Nexus device will get dev support almost by default.
But the Epic taught me to be careful about my choice in phones, as lack of great development can drop a phone from awesome, to dam, wish I could get that mod.
Those who got the Epic on release day, waited for CM acceptance on the Epic, will understand why I'm a bit gun shy about one-off devices

Just by looking at the keyboard I can tell that this isnt a Nexus Slider. Or at least not one that intends on being a phone.
To Heck With That Darn Photon ( seriously ? I'd rather hang on to my EPIC ... :good: ) THIS >>> http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/06/21/iphone-5-features-what-expect-this-fall/ <<< is the REAL winner on that page ...
P.S. = I am NOT about to lay down any bets on that NFNM ( he turns from Good Spidy to Bad Spidy really fast sometimes ... LOL = I Kid , I Kid !!! )

Its all about they keyboard layout. It doesn't match up with something that would create ease of use. This looks like a prototype for a Phablet and or Tablet.
