[INFO] Samsung Galaxy 10.1 review, finds its place next to the TF101.

Even though it's the 10.1 review, a lot of comparisons between it an the TF101 and iPad2 are drawn. Also some benchmarks and interesting tidbits for those interested.

Galaxy has no MicroSD and no HDMI. So the TF shouldn't even be on it's list of comparison. We're better than that.

TF is twice as thick, and is quite a bit heavier, it's all up to personal preference and what your needs are. If I didn't want a keyboard dock I'd probably shoot for a Galaxy Tab. Saying there isn't a comparison is pretty weak of you, you must be a fanboy.

If you find 130 grams to be too heavy (the weight of about 2 chocolate bars), then you might as well get the iPod Touch.
My 3 year old has no problems using my TF for extended periods of time. And last I checked, I had no need to slide it under a door - although it will fit.

Well then why not buy a notebook instead? Twice as thick, heavier but more powerful, cheaper and does more, hey you don't need to slide it under a door anyways so it doesn't matter.

who needs a detachable keyboard when weight doesn't matter? You can get notebooks with touch screens and you can put android on it if you want, you're an idiot lol notebooks are cheaper and more features who cares if they are heaver and bulkier and dont have detachable keyboards you don't need to slide it under a door after all RIGHT?

Show me a notebook with touchscreen that's $399 and has the convertable feature of the TF.

They have (out of stock) adapters for MicroSD and HDMI. LOL
I like my TF much more than my older Galaxy Tab v1 (7 inch). The TF & dock is many times more useful. Main advantage of the GT 7inch is data access plan, but vzw cripples that with useless OS restrictions against free voice/ip, skype, tethering, etc. I can tether the TF to my phone which effectively 100% replaces the GT 7inch.
After months of waiting Samsung/vzw is releasing 2.3.3 for GT 7inch, but I do not have it available yet. Samsung are on their second iteration of accessories. The latest car adapter has USB port for your cable, and the plug itself is 100% proprietary (literally I think there are *no* aftermarket equivalents - that indicate the lightning bolt on the tablet as charging. 2.1 amps is not sufficient). At least Samsung has the proprietary cables to the tablet in stock. It should be the same accessories for the GT 10.1 as 7 inch, with some exceptions.
If Samsung releases s/w updates like Asus, I think these tablets will be comparable. If Samsung falls behind it may suck because Google is going forward very fast.
I like that the Asus and Samsung tablets are physically different because users can choose favorite hardware features, and it is good competition.

This. They will give you the same basic Honeycomb experience, which I hope Google keeps a tight rein on so that they don't end up with the same mess they have on phones. But the hardware is different enough from tablet to tablet to enhance the experience depending on what your needs are.
I've never used the HDMI out on my Evo or my TF, and probably never will. I will likely never get a keyboard dock. I'd like to have a tablet that didn't feel quite as rickety as the TF. But I do want more than 16GB of storage, and that and price trump the sexiness and build quality of the Galaxy to me.

Guys, I own both. The GT is definitely, hands down, the better tablet. The TF is a better "netbook." As a tablet alone (dockless), the HDMI port and MicroSD does not compensate for the heaviness, size, and inferior quality screen that the TF has. Try it out for yourself. You'll know what I mean.
All in all, if you already have a laptop or a netbook, get the GT. Otherwise, the TF might be a worthy bridge.

Yeah I Plan to use the TF For school and Out of town Trips. I dont own a laptop/netbook so the TF is perfect. Small and Portable. Ive Always Liked Asus too. If the GT 10.1 had a Micro sd card slot then It would been the perfect Tablet but they killed it >,< (Oh and HDMI too)

Dockless, HDMI and MicroSD matter if you'll use them. If you're not going to use them, go with the Galaxy Tab.
Don't dare say they're useless features, or not worth the extra weight and size (very insignificant differences, imo)
The screen on the Galaxy Tab sports a PLS panel, and it is definitely better... Kind of. Color reproduction is worse. Viewing angles are better.
Backlight bleed is just as much of a problem. It's still an edge-lit device.
Although PLS is new, it's still an LCD. Stuck pixels/dead pixels will occur, and quality control won't get all of them.
If you're looking for a tablet, try the GT and the TF, and the iPad 2. It's all about preference If you're looking for a netbook, get a netbook.
As an aside, if you have a good HD television, HDMI is awesome for watching movies, etc. in HD on the tele!

No MicroSD means that it is JUNK. If I wanted a Tablet that does not allow expansion I would have gotten an iPad instead.

Yup it doesnt matter to Samsung user cause its $40.00 for hdmi adapter and $20.00 for the usb adapter.....Kinda silly looking with a Tampon string (hdmi/usb adapter) sticking out of the bottom of the tab.....

I don't have a dock but I went with the TF just for the MicroSD. It's a must. I do wish it was lighter.

You clearly don't understand the needs of other people.
I have a laptop - I can check my email, weather, news, facebook, twitter and see what the Amazon app of the day is BEFORE my laptop can load a browser... I spent $1400 on the laptop and find my investment in the Transformer for be head over heals better - I need things to be efficient, fast and trouble free and the Transformer provides me with that.

Are you happy with your Thrive?

I had bought the Samsung Gtab 10.1 but returned it after two weeks when the Thrive came out.
Im kinda on the fence about If I should return it and go back to the Gtab 10.1
Things I like about the Thrive:
grippy back, not afraid of dropping it
tons of ports, even tho I havent used them yet,(keyword=Yet)
Removable battery.
different color back covers
file explorer
Things I think Samsung did better on:
better power/volume buttons (very hard to find on thrive)
speakers- are tons better then the thrive
screen- brighter, Gtab is now listed as the best tablet display, took the crown from the I Pad 2
Lighter- but afraid of dropping it because its so thin and slippery
battery life- is much better then the thrive.
So now we have support form XDA with our own forum section,
what are your thoughts? are you happy with it?
Do you think the Dev's will work on this, IE: custom rooted Rom's? (nothing better then a tweaked custom rom for a great user experience)
Im not trying to dis either one, just pointing out what I think
I have searched the net for some reviews, not many out there. I would have thought there would be tons of hands on reviews, I found only a couple of them.

I've had the Thrive since about 2 days before the official launch and have been extremely happy with it. I think it has gotten even better over the last 2 weeks as root has already been achieved.
This is my first tablet, so I wouldn't feel right about doing any kind of in depth comparison with any other tablet, but I will say that from all the research I did before choosing the Thrive is that if you want svelte and sexiness this isn't the tab for you. If what you are after is some added functionality (i.e. the full array of ports and full size SD card slot) and don't mind a little extra chunkiness then it is a great tablet.

Solid grip due to rubberized and ribbed backing
Nice form factor
Toshiba as a Mfr
Excellent battery life
HATES:
On/off button - very hard to find the thing!
Volume control sucks - can't use it without tipping tablet and staring directly at it with a light shining on it. Huge fail!!
Kapersky antivirus embedded in ROM - can't turn it off, and it slows the dual-core tablet to a crawl. Leaving Kapersky running makes my BRAND NEW Thrive less responsive than my VERY OLD, T-Mobile G1!!!
Might be adjustable, but HDMI screen output extends past edge of my hi-def TV
Despite this, I do like it. Wish I had done more research though... would have lowered my expectations. Tablets have not had time to mature yet. Galaxy is too expensive, Moto too "flashy" (rather than useful), Acer too klunky, Thrive needs tweaking. Nada ready to kill iPad yet, I'm afraid...

Sorry to disagree but I think the worst android tablet is way better then any I pad. My wife has the dam thing and I cant stand it, other then a fluid screen transition its about worthless, copy/paste never works, no flash for videos, no wifi widget available, no weather widget, apps suck, mostly because he is a control freak.
oops, sorry for the I pad rant, bad subject for me.

O Yea I forgot to add to my list of Dislikes- " THE THRIVE'S CAMERA SUX SO SO BAD" the Samsung G Tab ran all over it

I am happy with my Thrive. I would not exchange it for anything currently.
The easy to hold aspect is dear to me.
The screen might look worse than the gtab side by side, but I don't see anything wrong with it myself.
I seldom use the speakers, I generally use headphones.
So from my perspective in an exchange I would be giving up an easy to hold tablet that I can easily hookup to my monitor and usb mouse/keyboard.

i am a tech guy majoring in engineering and this tanlet beats the others by functionality. Its isnt as sexy as others been thin and all, but it is sturdy, removable battery makes it worth it. I chose the thrive over the galaxy tab for the sheer functnality.

Loving it but one major gripe......
awesome that the thrive has a full size sd card Just but it need to be behind a covered port. I have lost a sd card. I must have bumped the card while I was out and round with it and the card ejected. i dont have a case for it yet but even if i had the sd card does not fully insert.
Does anyone have problems with there sd cards rebooting because you bump card while its inside port? or while thrive is in a case

Well I have decided to keep the Thrive and Not go back to the Samsung gtab, even tho the gtab's latest update skin looks pretty cool
Since Im keeping it I have ordered a screen protector, neoprene sleeve, green back cover and stylus pen.
Now if we could get a custom rom to rid us of the OS lag life would be great

I'm currently in two minds right now.
I love the Full SD, Full USB, and I can see the potential of the AT100 ("Thrive" is already trademarked here in Australia), but the Aussie version is still stuck on version 3.0.1 of the OS. That version of the software is buggy as all hell! Random crashes, reboots and (of cause) the SOD abound.
While Toshiba have a good reputation for support, the fact that it's taken so long to being us into line with the rest of the world ... and every time we ask we get "very soon"; over a month of "very soon" is getting infuriating.

Just a question though ... there should be no issues putting this on the 3.0.1 tablet? There are no other supporting files that will get upset? (I'm not very experienced with Android and don't want to brick the device).

No, it should be no issue. Just remember to do a backup with CWM recovery before flashing the update. That way if it goes bad, you will be able to restore to stock.

Love my Thrive 16gb, I am around iPad's and not impressed at all. I am a Tech Coordinator and would prefer the android in the exchange enviorment with the Google Apps.
No problems with my sd card ejecting with or without case.
Hope you get a case soon...saw that someone has one for sale in the forum.

Loving my Toshiba, personally don't think theres THAT much of a difference between the screen on this and the other tabs, and if there is it really doesn't bug me because I think the screen is perfectly fine. The full sized USB port is really convenient for transferring files as well, because I use a Mac and it doesn't have an SD card slot and the Bluetooth manager keeps freezing.
Only real gripe is the bloody 3.1 update. It was originally due for July in Aus, then they said another week, and now they're saying another 2 - 4 weeks. So yeah, but besides that liking this thing lol.

[Q] External Storage

I'm thinking about getting the Nexus 10, currently have an iPad 2 but the screen of googles tablet is just too tempting.
One of the things I want to use it for is viewing media, I'll be getting the 16gb version and I'm a little bit worried the storage will get filled up pretty quickly. I have about 75gb worth of dropbox storage but was wondering if there's anything I could use if there's no wifi?
I'm thinking of just a small flash drive to plug into the microUSB port with loads of films on it, basically like a usb drive but compatible with the nexus 10, is there anything out there that'll do that?

There are ways to make that happen but you will need to root your device. This can be done with the use of apps, or with a custom rom but definitely possible. gaming...I don't think you can yet. mainly because its early and 4.2 is still pretty new.

I have no problem rooting the device, was probably going to anyway. I just wanted to know what the best/smallest external storage options were?

Shame the reader only support sdhc so max 32gb cards for me, but can get a few!

Idea for possible solution to no SD card.

As we all know by now, the Note 5 does not come with an SD card slot. There are USB OTG adapters that will allow you to plug in a micro sd card reader and use the storage. My issue is they are bulky and cannot be kept on the device during daily use. My thought is, if the adapter is slim enough you may be able to plug into the micro usb slot and have the card wrap around the back of the phone behind a case. If anyone has seen something like this please let me know. Check out the link below to get a better idea of what i mean. The link is for a universal wireless charger that will link to your phone via micro usb. Instead of the cable linking to a qi charger, maybe it could link to a thin micro sd card reader. Please let me know what you think, maybe improve upon the idea.

I think the best solution would be to rethink your workflow/usage scenario for the SD Card and find other ways to achieve what you want. You can also wait to see if they come out with the 128gb version, but between the 64gb storage option and changing how you do things, it should be achievable.

Yeah I did this a few years ago when I switched to a phone with no mSD slot, moved all my pictures and videos and **** to cloud storage, now I pay $10 a month and have 1TB of storage space I can put anything I want on. I back up all my photos to the cloud and delete them from my phone once I get a decent number accumulated.
I also have been streaming my music, I dont listen to music a TON, but when I do I generally am only getting 30-60 minutes of listening in, that's not all that much data to stream so it doesn't effect my data usage all that much.
All in all, I felt fine on 32GB of internal storage with no mSD card, 64GB is a breeze.

I do actually have a wireless option that reads sd cards, my use case, i would like to the storage attached so pics and videos can be directly stored. I pre-ordered the 64gb, i didnt want to hold out lol. I found another item that is getting me closer but now i have to figure out a way to read the ribbon cable lol

That cable is pretty cool. I know you can't beat direct storage, that's why I had the 128gb iPhone But honestly, managing that much space via usb sync etc. is kind of a hassle. Maybe the cable adapter is good for batch offloading, but do you really need that much local storage, I think you'd get tired of the extra bulk and the potential hassles of "mounting" the external card, read/write limitations, etc. that go along with all of that.

I got this monster on the go cloud from Sam's club for 10 bucks a few months back, really good deal.

Yeah, that price drop popped up a week or two ago on slickdeals. If you can go up to SD Card, they're a bit cheaper/faster.

If they make this for the Note 5 like they did for the s6 and s6 edge it could solve the battery issue and the sd card problem

There are always ideas. It's unfortunately that Samsung made that choice (Or maybe the Note Edge 2 supports it and they're trying to encourage people to go for the more expensive Note Edge 2? idk, Just a thought)

As mentioned previously, maybe there might be a case manufacturer that provides the support without the battery so it's lighter (or Samsung could surprise us with the S view case?)
Dual USB drive or NFC SD Card/ FD? sure you have to carry something extra that might get lost and all, but it's quite portable indeed :good:
Get a Note 4, install ported Note 5 ROM and voila!
Buy Cloud Storage or get an unlimited amount of cloud storage's

I'd use the battery /SD case in a minute! I have a note 2 with a 9300 mah zerolemon battery and I love my giant brick. That's why I don't care about design this, pretty that, glass this, feels good in hand that.
I just want my forever lasting brick phone! Whatever phone I get is getting either a zerolemon extended battery or a battery case.
Doesn't matter if the phone is pretty cause I'm never gonna see it!
I don't care because thinking about plugs and chargers something I never want to go back to!

I had been using this 64GB with my ex S6E - works very well. Is mini size and not bulky at all. It is auto detect by the phone and N5 users had reported it works well with it too

I Ihave an S6 and I purchased a micro OTG with 64B of storage - you can get larger ones I think - it connects to the USB and sticks out about a half inch - great for additional storage - I keep nandroids on it and connect it when I want to restore a previous nandroid - you can do a lot with it - not as good as an EXT SD card - but it works pretty well. and it is very small

Ya, my note 3 has 544GB of storage using a 512GB full size sd card. I used a smaller adapter than the amazon one mentioned above and fit it completely inside my zerolemon case with the extended battery. If you are looking at the back of the phone, it fits just to the right of the camera. No bulge or anything. It looks completely normal.

Why not use a wireless external hard drive? Its almost like your own personnel cloud. 4TB for $200. Don't have to worry about monthly payments or being on a network/WiFi.
I'm thinking about getting one myself. Any thoughts/experience with these?

Ya, I use one in addition to the sd card on my phone. It's definitely not as fast as a micro sd card would be, but it's usable. I really notice it when browsing directories. If you have anything over say a 100 photos or movies in a folder it takes about 3-4 seconds to load which is kinda annoying. This is my experience with an N router and USB 3.0. I'm doing a SMB share.

Very good review, I'm a lazy reader a and I still finished most of it, you didn't mentioned you ScreenOn Time? Did you? I would like to know what tour SOT is with your usage pattern, and just one thing, I would seriously try to get a sd reader to microusb otg, they exist, this would allow you to use sd cards when needed and get a little more speed, I suspect microsd is always slower than full size sds.

Thank you glad you liked the review - I completely forgot about the screen on time I'll will add it to the article when I get the chance. I prefer the dedicated canon camera cables via OTG USB when connecting as opposed to using external card readers. When working away it is a lot easier to lose the card readers as they are smaller than the cables themselves and also easier to find on my bag. Just a personal preference

I had no idea your cameras had a way to directly connect OTG, I kept thinking you were removing microsd cards and putting them inside the Fire, so you actual solution is a million times better than my sugestion.
Yeah the review is very good, I mean for $50 the tablet is the best bang for the buck as we say in the US..
