Ok not trying to start a huge debate here but I am looking for facts....
Which drains battery faster Streaming music (ie Pandora, Google Music, etc) or playing music off the SDcard directly. I am thinking maybe the sdcard would be better battery wise because not using data as well as the music app, but I am not a fan of having to suck up sdcard space with music so I can listen to music when I am out.
You already know the answer. Data transfer will hog much more power up than just playing the music. Easiest fix is to just buy a new memory card. I bought a 16GB micro-SD class 6 card for $27 just recently and works great.

+1...just buy a bigger memory card
I was wondering, lets say, would a 32GB SD Card drain more power than a 2GB one?

nope, SD cards have nothing to do with battery life. only memory, along with read and write speeds depending on class

I'm planning to get a microSDhc card for my Jade (HTC Touch 3g).
Can you guys please advice will there is any difference in performance, response time and speed between 4GB microSDhc and 8GB microSDhc.
For the timebeing, I'm using mere 1GB micro SD card and its works great.
I know that both works with Jade, but how about the response time? I'm surely looking for bigger space, but not at the cost of speed and response time.
Thanks!!
HTC (officially) supports only 4Gb SD. Many I know have used 8Gb without problem. Personally I'm using just 4Gb without problem. Response time - blink of an eye, I do not have an empirical engineering measure though. Most of my programs / applications are on SD and the response time are OK.. so far, over a year now, never fail.
I use this one without any problems:
http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B001D0ROGO/ref=ox_ya_oh_product
I have no exact data for response etc. but it is very fast.
I am using an 8gb, I can't compare it to a 4gb since I don't have one.

Thanks Azahidi for the info!!
Even i'm planning to have my most of the programs/appilcations on the storage card, so was wondering about the response time.
On HTC site, they said they have tested 8GB, but didn't mention about the performance.
http://www.htc.com/in/faqs.aspx?p_id=174&cat=270&id=85794&f=t
But, the salesman at the store said 8GB will make ur device slow, which I didn't want for more space.
So, was looking for the expert opinions on this.

Have you guys installed programs/applications on the Storage card?
And is the reponse of those program on SD are marginally slower as compare to similiar application on device memory?
Even I'm looking to bigger space, it helps a lazy person like me to clean the storage after long long time.
How is the access time for data like music/video/documents from SD and how about the stability?
Thanks in advance!!

I installed nearly all programs on my card (see above) and I have no delay or other problems with it. Of course I do never remove it.
Speed for Cards...
most of the new Cards u can use have different "class" of speed, it give class
Class 2: 2 MByte/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x
i use a Toshiba 8GB with Class4 (i pay 8,-EUR at eBay) and this works fine.
The most of the Programms I use, I installed on the Card except Phoneweaver or eqal Software that use direct access to the Sim.
I use for Videos (MusicClips, TV-Series with Subtitle in srt-format and Documentations) the CoreMobileVideoPlayer and the Videos works fluently perfect.
I have a second Device, a HTC Diamond with internal 4GB and to this it is no different with the speed (memory access).
I hope, this helps a little bit

Thank you so much!!
It is a great information you shared and really helpfull for selecting my Storage card.
well i use an 8GB micro sd card and it works like a charm
besides i heard that our jade can hold up to 16 GB's (thats what the folks at htc store told me) not quite sure about it but i guess the more storage u ride the more battery consumption u get
so i guess its fairly enough to stick with 8Gigs.
HTC touch 3G ( jade 110)
Hi guys. (I own htc touch 3g- jada 110) I am using also 8gb SDHC (kingston) class 4 and I recomend this one. Its fast, cheap (ebay- just be aware of some cheap replicas). I have also tried this card on my girlfriend`s htc tytn 2 (kaiser) and worked as well. So highly recomend KINGSTON cards.
I have both the 4gb and 8 gb Sandisk micro sd card. I can't tell the difference in speed and am very happy with the 8 gb card! Am thinking of upgrading to the 16 gb for my movies though!

Let us know your feedback after using 16GB, if things are stable there..... then we might think of switching to 16GB for the obvious reasons...
Howdy, I tried to film the aftermath of the bizarre weather we've been having here in Scotland yesterday, but I noticed that when I played it back, even converted it to an HD Avi and ran it through VirtualDub that at certain points the video lags and freezes, the sounds remains the same but the picture will pause for a second. I'm assuming (based on some research on Google and here) that it's because the memory card I'm using was the basic Class 2 that was shipped with the phone. Assuming I buy a Class 6 or that, the card will be fast enough to write HD video to it? I'm just wondering if any of you have had these problems, and/or does a higher class SD card fix it? (before I buy one!). Or, is it for a separate reason on the Desire Z that the video is jerky? Thanks! Below is my video should you want to see an example!
http://youtu.be/XX0zKKDRtUI?hd=1
Yes the class can have a massive impact on HD recording on this phone (and others), get a class 6 and you should soon see the differences.

Thank you, I shall, I just wanted to make sure! On a side note, if I change my memory card does Android get confused because of how it "deals" with the SD Card? (I'm coming from five years of Windows Mobile & I know they had no issues with SD Cards being swapped) but I noticed Android "Prepares The SD Card" whenever you unmount it or that.. Is it a straight forward swap and everything's working or is it a hassle of reinstalling certain things? Thanks!

Perfect thanks! I'm away to buy one, I assume that a higher class will improve the frame rate too! Thanks for your help!
Mine even stops recording after 13 seconds or so. Also have an older 16GB Class 2 card. I'm also getting a good Class 6 one.
Regarding files on the sdcard: Just copy everything from your old card to the new one. If you are using linux, be sure to also copy the hidden directories

Thank you, shall do! I'm just waiting on it now!
I have a 16Gb Class 6 card and have noticed the same thing with my HD video recordings being choppy.
I attributed it to other things going on such as data downloading or the system splitting resources to keep other balls in the air at the same time.
I can live with it, but would like it to be better as well.
I don't think the Class 6 card will make a difference for you, but it can't hurt either.
As to switching microSD cards, there's no issue with that. I don't know what happens behind the scenes when it's 'preparing the SD card' but the only issue I had was on the G1 when I was using apps2sd and have all of my apps on the ext3 partition.
I use a couple of different microSD cards regularly, no issues with swapping.
Good luck!

I'm using a 8GB Class4 card, same situation.
I tried to disable Live Wallpaper, put the phone in Flight Mode, close all user background program, overclocked to 1.4GHz. still lags.
If you change to the resolution just below the HD level then the videos record smoothly even on my 8gb class 2 card.
Does formatting the SD card with a different allocation unit size increase performance? Can anybody with a spare mini SD card test this -- the higher the size the better the performance (but more space gets eaten up by small files). The general idea with this is if the aus is small it conserves file space but you get slower read/writes -- if the aus is higher you get faster read/write but files take up more space.
I wonder if there is a good alternative video recording app that would handle the recording better...?

For info i had bought a Kingmax class10 8gb, to swap with the supplied one but
after a 10 hours use of my desireZ, i had a message "sd card is read only"(corrupted files on it, in fact), at that time i used only googlenavigation/Layar/whatsApp as software "using Sdcard" and took 2 or 3 pictures with the camera for testing.
perhaps it's a single defective unit, but for feedback and history purposes, i post that

On the Nexus S, you have 1 gig of space for app installs, you then have 13gigs of space for your "sd" card. So that's more than what you already have.
On my Vibrant I had 16 internal plus 8 external. I loaded it up with videos and then never watched any of them, except for the short user created ones I made to show off stuff I did, so I'm not too worried about space on the Nexus. I've got about 2gigs of songs on it now, a bunch of apps I use all the time and MSpot will let you have another 2gigs of music in the cloud for free, so that should take care of me until the next big bad phone comes along that I decide to get.
So I have my MXP rooted with TWRP. Absolutely love it so far. I bought a new sandisk 64gb SD card and threw about 24gbs of music on it. I have been noticing occasional skipping, happens every other song or so. Not the end of the world but kind of annoying. I use Poweramp. Has anyone else noticed this? If so, are there any suggestions to fix?

I was using a 64gb sandisk card in my Note 3 and had the similar issue. I will have to try it in the MXPE.
Class 10 card?
Try a different player and see if it happens.
I use Poweramp and have a SP 64gb, SD card with about 12gb of music on it. I have no problems with skipping. Only time I hear any "glitch" is when I rotate my phone, which is another discussion I started in the Q&A section.

Your sdcard is probably a knock off. Do some read/write tests on it from your computer to verify you are getting proper speeds.

That card is fine but you might have a defective card or even sd slot on your phone. Return the card and see if it happens again with the new one.

I see mostly good reviews for that card it makes no sense that you are having problems so I would have to guess maybe you just got a bad card. Make sure to try other music players if you haven't already maybe try a different brand and ask for a refund?

Try a different class 10 card with the same albums, if it happens again, it could be the music ripping quality. If that's the case, maybe try to download a different version of the same music.

So basically there's no legitimate use for the GPS slot. Ok.
