No Super User...Su binary? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just followed instructions for CM7 on eemc with nightly 106 and OC kernel.
Rom Manager says no superuser? So I installed from market and superuser says there's updated binary but can't complete auto install. But it put a .zip on sd card and said to instal via recovery... which puts me back to step 1 which was trying to use ROM manager to write recovery?
What went wrong here and how to fix? Didn't have any of these problems when I did my son's nc the same way last week.

Don't know how to install cwm w/o rom manager. Put my card back to cwm img and tried to flash the updated binary.... says bad?
Guess there's something broke with 106 and su.
Started afresh with cm 102 (as recommended), gapps, and Oc kernel. All is well...

...good for now!

Had the same problem here. I'm away from my Nook right now, but I fixed it by downloading Superuser from the Extras menu in RomManager, then rebooting to recovery via the normal shutdown screen and applying it manually. The zip is in the clockwork folder, in the goo-inside.me folder. Just select it from "*choose zip" menu and reboot.
I may have the details slightly wrong.
Superuser definitely got left out of #106.
Aloha,
cap

Thanks. I had to do the same to get su.
Wondering why is left out of 106.

I am having the same problem... except every time I try to download the new SU binary it says that there was an error and that I should boot into recovery blahblahblah, but when I do it says that there was an error installing the .zip file. What else can I do?

I'm still on 102 no prob. They discuss this issue on the cm thread. Try doing it from rom manager.
Download Rom, extras, superuser...
Then instal from cwm under clockwork/downloads/...and some sub directory.

Ahh thank you, I couldn't find it before.

Installing roms

I have rom manager installed and am trying to install a rom from sdcard I keep gettin error message after it boots into recovery mode can someone tell me what I am doing wrong
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Try giving us a little more details on what the error message says. Otherwise it's hard to determine what exactly you're doing wrong.
We can start with the basics, do you have ClockWorkMod installed?
Yes clockworkmod is installed, the error message e: file signature failed
E:failed to verify
Installation aborted
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Try installing the ROM without using ROM Manager. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery, then manually choose the zip and flash.
This usually means that clockwork is not installed correctly and that you are not flashing the rom from within clockwork.

I installed it from rom manager and it said it installed right, hold down vol down power and camera to get into recovery mode correct? Then how do I manually choose the zip file?

I rooted my epic w one click and I did a factory restore did that take out my root privs ?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It definitely sounds as though you haven't properly installed ClockWork -- IT appears you are booting in to the stock recovery, which will not allow you to flash a rom.
Assuming your phone is rooted, you will want to goto this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
and download this method of installing clockwork. Follow the directions on the post, and you shouldn't have an issue getting clockwork to run.
I'm just curious....did you rename or move this from inside the phone? I know I moved a couple roms using astro and then tried and no go.....maybe it was just me tho...

Flash problems

OK I have a problem. I had a difficult time flashing to DI18, figured out it was the pc not installing all the drives. Got there, went to backed snack 1.6 without a problem. I try anything else and I get the same error no matter what I wipe or anything.. tried DJ29 and DK05 and a few of the custom roms based n those 2 and I end up with can't symlink system/bin/dumpcrash, error at line 6..
I flashed DI18 with odin, fresh, didn't install any apps or sync with google, and same thing when I clockwork.. rom manager won't boot into clockwork, only android.. Is it me? Am I doing something wrong? I read someone flashed DJ29 or a DK05 rom over baked snack and I can't seem to find a solution.
Any help is appreciated.. I can't find any topics or posts that offer help or guidance in what to do with errors..

I had that same sot of problem. Rooted the epic flashed clockwork and woudnt boot in to the proper recovery. So here is what I did: with any file manager go onto your sd card and delete the update zip from the sd root directory. Then go into rom manager and reflash clockwork. Then manually boot into recovery by holding down volume down, power, and camera button. This should get you into clockwork recovery.

OK I tried but rom manager wont boot into any recovery now. I still have to boot in manually.. Not a problem, but I tbought booting from RM would be better for installing the .zip. gonna change the battery and try flashing but I am more concerned with how to flash any DJ29 or DK05 rom cuz I haven't been able to no matter what.

Exactly. You HAVE to go to Clockwork from the 3 button boot. STOP using Rom manager.

If you are actually in Clockwork via the 3 button boot (green text) and you can't install a zip, any zip as that is an option to actually choose the zip no mater what the name. THEN you need to re-root the phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388
and re-install Clockwork
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782300
Also, this is a general topic that should be in the General forum, not in the development section as you aren't developing anything in this thread.
Ok thanks, wasn't sure where it belonged.. I have installed baked snack 1.6 and I can keep doing it no matter what I do, I don't even need to wipe. But anything else won't install. Root is there, I use apps that need it and the only one that has given me problems is root manager about su and not etting permission even though it has permission, so I will removethe permissions and see what happens.
Thanks a lot for the help, it's highly appreciated.

Recovery doesn't want to change, im stuck at 2.5.1.2

I want to flash CM7, but everytime I try flashing Clockwork recovery 3, it ends up staying at 2.5.1.2. What am I doing wrong? I tried flashing it from ROM Manager and that didn't help, and I don't know if I can flash it with the fastboot method since I'm using CWR already. What can I do?
Additional notes: Right now, I'm running CM6 RC2. And my phone looks sexy.
Like you I also came across that issue but trying to install kernel in Ice Glacier. Now what you want to do is install it manually via console. Check my other thread all you need is the flash image and clockworkmod recovery. I myself flashed ClockworkMod 3.0.0.0 as other howoto failed and True's didn't stick.

Go here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916930
And hit on the link to download the cwm 3.xxxx
Once the file is downloaded use root explorer, navigate to /sdcard/downloads/ and find the recovery. Make sure that it shows as .img and not as .zip. if it is a zip then unzip to get the .img file
Select the recovery and change the name to some easier name like f.e cwmrec3 (nnow u will have a cwmrec3.img file).
Move it to /sdcard (root) for ease of method
Open terminal emulator and do
Su (enter) (# will change for $)
flash_image recovery /sdcard cwmrec3.img
Wait for it to go to the next line.
Reboot to recovery and ur text will now be orange. You now haz recovery 3.xxxx
Also, note that if u enter rom manager it will still say that you have cwm 2.xxx that does not matter though as long as ur recovery txt is orange and not green

the fastboot method will work if you have CWM 3.5.1.3 already. I did that this morning, and it worked like a charm.
so I was able to do the easy cw method installing the zip from recovery then choosing 2.5.1.4, but after a few runs with the latest builds of CM7 i was having major issues with my mobile data connection jumping from H to 3G, each time lagging out my connection and making streaming videos, etc impossible to play. So I reflashed to stock, and my H returned to normal. So i thought I'd give it another shot, rooted, downloaded ROM Manager, flashed to 2.5.1.2 smooth, then tried the above method. When I tried to load the 2.5.1.4 in ROM manager, it said "An error occurred while flashing your recovery." So I tried the terminal, and no matter how I rename the file, and I know I followed the instructions flawlessly, it says flash_image: not found. So while ROM Manager seems completely capable of flashing to the 2.5.1.2 version, nothing seems to work to get me past it. What could I be missing?

Thats because you flashed back to stock and stock roms do not have "flash_image" on /system/bin
Download this

Use root explorer and paste it to /system/bin
Try terminal again

Not able to upgrade to froyo

My objective is to upgrade to froyo.
I have stock samsung vibrant eclair. Device is rooted, has recovery manager installed, is not hardware locked. I have already installed clockwise recovery using rom manager.
I have bionix rom downloaded to my internal sd card's root folder. I select "install from folder" in rom manager. It reboots but I do not find any option to install from sd card. I do reinstall software, out just installs update.zip and reboots to 2.1 over and again.
In short, I can not figure out how to get into clockwise recovery. It just shows 4 options _ reboot, reinstall, wipe user data and write cache. No option to install from sd card. I have wiping data and cache but that does not help.
Incidentally, I had successfully flashed bionix but can not do it again.

*clockwork recovery
Look on your internal SD card, do you see an Update.zip file?
Tried 3 button recovery procedure, reinstall packages, reboots into cwm, then install from zip?
Had issue with 3e recovery where it would do start you describe, but not from stock.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Try it more than once if you have rooted it already with update folder or superoneclick. It can take 2 or 3 tries to recognize. IT you get stuck Odin back to stock, then root and go from there. good luck
Locate the update file and delete it. In clockworkmod recovery app you need to choose flash clockworkmod recovery... its the top section in the app. Then choose vibrant. It will download and then flash it. Then choose boot into recovery. Then when in recovery choose reinstall packages. Then reinstall packages again. You should get clockworkmod recovery. Then choose your zip and locate on sd card and install.

Odd...maybe try flashing one of supercurio's voodoo kernels, they have cwm built in.

Ok i had the same issues i couldn't reboot into cwm recovery always to default 2e. I found workaround
1. Download cwm recovery for your phone
2. Rename that folder to update.zip
3. Put update.zip to internal SD card
4. Turn off phone
5. Hold volume up and down and power button
6. When you go to recovery go to install packages it will install cwm and it will go to cwm automatically
7.Now go to install zip from SD card find your ROM
8. Enjoy
I am 2e recovery. Tried to reflash it from cwm.
Is there a link to download cwm as a file so I can flash it using reinstall option.

Here you go http://www.2shared.com/file/rpqd2-ET/recovery-clockwork-2512-galaxy.html
Link gives me error - invalid link. Could it be because I am downloading it on the phone directly?

In the meanwhile I did this ...
Deleted update.zip from rot folder.
In rom manager, choose option to flash clock wise recovery.
In the file manager, I could see that update.zip file was now there .. 577kb.
In rom manager, I chose to reboot into recovery
Reinstall option in the recovery mode.
It gave me an error something like.
.. Inflation aborted ... ,(bad)
Seems like the file getting downloaded is bad.
Any ideas?

Try with phone from this link

**Solved**
Here is how...
I can not say for sure that this exactly solved the issue since I did quite a few other things before being able to boot into recovery mode. But this would be my best conclusion:
- Open Rom Manager
- Menu -> Clear cache
- Flash clockwise recovery again
I believe, somewhere I had a bad download that did not do proper flashing of the clockwise recovery. Here is the link that ticked me..
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/koush/47399-upgrade-rom-rom-manager-problem.html
In between my last post and now, I did the below other steps:
- Got hold of a place to hook up my laptop to a decent speed internet
- Used Mini kies to flash stock 2.2 rom from Samsung
- So, at this time, I was on 2.2 already
- Used SuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse to root the phone
- Got error "Not enough space" during copying
- adb shell and remounted /system in rw mode
- cleaned up some bloatware in /system/app folder so that I had about 15 MB free in /system
- Used "3e_recovery_installer" to install modified recovery to address the signature issue with the stock samsung ROM
- Reboot
- Open ROM manager. Clear Cache as mentioned above
- Flash clockwise recovery, reboot, reinstall
- VOILLA! i am in the Clockwise recovery screen
- And there I flashed the bionix 1.2.1
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE QUICK RESPONSES, LINKS etc. Very much appreciated.

[Q] Cannot upgrade ROM Manager (clockworkmod) without google market

I cannot upgrade ROM Manager v4.3.2.3 without using google marketplace. Keep in mind I'm trying to upgrade ROM Manager so that I can install the google apps (which include the market). Since I don't have the latest version of clockwork mod (the latest as of today is v4.4.0.6), I get this message when I select "Download ROM":
"You must upgrade your ROM Manager to the latest version!"
Well, I cannot do that, because I don't have the Market.
I've tried so many things, all I want is the market and I'll be done messing with this phone. I've tried installing the latest google apps zip.
And I've tried installing a recovery image from clockworkmod.com's site
When I say "install", what I'm doing is:
put the .zip onto the SD card
boot into recovery
install the .zip
I can boot into clockwork recovery mode perfectly fine though.
I'd be nice if ROM Manager had a selection "update app" or something, then I wouldn't be in this mess. Also, for whatever reason, I installed ROM Manager today, and it did not give me the latest version. I wish I noticed before installing CyanogenMod on it.
Thanks for the help.
