GPS Accuracy - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi everyone.
I have a problem with GPS on my euro Galaxy S (i9000).
I can get a lock without any problem, but the thing is that the accuracy it's very low (more than 40 meters).
I tried to have a look to LbsTestMode, but no settings helped. (I'm in Standalone mode).
Any advice?
Thanks.
Info:
Android 2.2.1
Baseband: XXJPY
Kernel: Hardcore K13E
Build: RSJS2
EDIT: I searched the forums, but almost every thread speaks about GPS lock, not accuracy.

try jvp - best gps so far

I don't know, which place you are in. You need to update to Gingerbread and use your default modem for country/network. Samfirmwire will help you in choosing the right modem.

Is that your phone having a root access or phone Android is original from Samsung?
If your phone is original Android no point in knowing about JVP!!

XXJVP is the latest stock version for Samung Galaxy S. You can find tons of custom ROMs or stock ones in the Galaxy S I9000 Android Development forum, and instructions on how to flash it.
Good luck!

better look for firmwares here http://samfirmware.com/

You should try Darkys 10.1 with Darky Core and JVO Modem. GPS works okay but no perfectly !

Thanks for your replies.
Now I upgraded to JVP (Juwe's 5.0).
During a car ride, the accuracy "seems" (placebo?) to be a little better, but not too much.
I will do some more tests today afternoon (here in Italy it's morning now), in the same conditions I did some other jogging rides, with Runkeeper and the phone in my pocket.
Do you think I should flash another modem from sam firmwares website?
Thanks.
EDIT: JVP is for Europe, so I should be ok, I think.

im having the same problem here
but im using a i9000T in mexico
im getting like 40m difference as well, using 2.3.3 darky's 10.1
BUT using JL2 modem since it allows me to use 850 band...was wondering if trying another modem would help
any suggestions?

I fluctuate between 15-30-45. Stock Bell at the moment with a couple if GPS Apps needed from time to time to get lock.
All in all, that accuracy is good enough for me.
If I need to be more accurate, I'll throw my SIM back inside my Nokia phone...

I'm back.
Today I noticed a decreased accuracy, what a pity...
The accuracy setting in libgps is 30 meters.
Any advice? Thanks.

I went from 2.2.1 to 2.3.3 JVH.
Reported GPS accuracy is worse in JVH. I often got 10 meters, now I see 30 meters more often.
The accuracy itself seems to be better though! So the report is more pessimistic but the GPS actually works better - at least when making some speed.
When walking, it seems the position is often frozen and only updated every 5 seconds or so. Which is a shame.

jvh / jvo gps is crappy
test jvp or use my files to change gps to JV99same with JVP) or nexus

Thanks for your reply.
If I try your nexus s files, do you know a way to revert back to what I have now? (Juwe's 5.0). Speaking of that, do you know if your files are compatible with Juwe's 5.0 (JVP). I think so, but just to confirm.
Thanks.

i think juve depending on base must be using jvo or jvp files so just go with jvo to get back =)

Today I tried one more time, with the same conditions (Juwe's 5.0 JVP, no modded files).
The only differences are:
- Phone not in pocket, but in direct line of sight with sky
- Fasterfix with Italy selected as location
The accuracy is still very low (fluctuates between 15-30-40). It's so unreliable for runkeeper stats.
What do you suggest for the next try?
I think the alternatives to try are:
- Nexus S files
- JV9 Files
- Lowering the Accuracy threshold to 20 (needed?)
Anyone experienced better results doing any of the above?
If you have other suggestions, please tell.
Thanks.

I've done a long and exhaustive test with many roms and many files for tracking purposes (I used SportyPal and now I use SportsTrackLive) and, beleive me, you can only go so far without an external device.
The only thing left to test is the Kernel. I think I had better result using SpeedMod.
I have come to the conclusion that if I want precise tracking I can only use an external device. I have yet to receive my order but I'm confident it will be miles appart from what I get with the SGS alone (or any phone, for that matters)

always 10-20m with jvk germany

SGS with GB can do only thus far and no further------
On the GPS front,SGS does have some shortcomings obviously.I had an Xperia Mini before migrating to SGS and that had a fabulous GPS with locking happenin withing seconds and accuracy always between 6 to 10 m and occasionally even less than 6!!!!
I have tried several tricks including all sorts of modems on SGS but have gotten no closer than 20 m especially after upgrading to GB.
I remember though----seeing accuacy of 10 m while still on Froyo 2.2!!!!!!!!!!!!
Which means it may not be hardware but something to do with the OS??

[HELP] Experience & Issues with the new Froyo 2.2 JPM

Just got the jm installed. Rooted and OCLF installed.
All seems to work fine but it is not as fast as i hoped. Eclair with OCLF over voodoo felt more responsive.
Pro. Skype is working. Just had a conversation over wifi. Good sound and well working (no hic-ups)
Flash is now working. However some sites using flash ads load slower.
I see som lags in my home screen when switching over apps. Did not have that on my former setup.
For the rest... I'l wait for voodoo to come.
Wonder what other experiences tell us.
Ps. If this thread belongs in general,please move it there.

cycle flight mode. this bug has been in android for like forever and 99 times out of 100 you just need to cycle flight mode and your 3g comes back.
even better, get tasker to do it for you automatically.
edit: even betterer, google fix the bug that's been present for like 18 months...
Posts from other threads say the GPS has improved vastly. I don't have my phone atm to test personally. Although there has yet to be a mytracks upload.

The real test is drive around in a car and see how accurate it is following you... using JM8 and JPK GPS there were gaps of >1 minute when it was completely lost, or it would show on a different street to the one I was one. As it was it would be completely useless for turn-by-turn navigation.
Guys... i tried JP6 then JPM then JPA ... let me tell you that both JP6 and JPM are identical in terms of performance .. laging a bit much more like JPK before... both of them cannot be repartitioned and should not be ticked so they dont repartition the disk while flashing ... well JPA does have the needed files to repartition with .512 , and i did ... performance in JPA is way way better than both JP6 and JPM ... with both JP6 and JPM i felt like a lagfix is a must have .. with JPA not anymore ... really ... it is fast enough to be able to wait happily for voodoo to get out .. then it will certainly rocket fly
that was my long day experience with the three roms of the day hope to have helped with this feedback

You should try to run many apps at once to see if it still lags, two days experience cannot say it is better than JP6.

Samsung has source code on their developer site and Samfirmwares.com has a ROM of the same name. This may or may not be the official release - it sounds like the official release will be named the same, BUT official releases on the Captivate and Vibrate have been named the same as SamFirmware roms and differences were found.
It is possible that SamFirmwares has a pre-release final. No one will know for sure until Samsung actually makes an official release and statement.
Although, if people are downloading this via Kies, then i would say it is official, but someone needs to compare the Kies release to the Samfirmwares.com release.

So far I've had no problems (albeit a little lag), however, I was disappointed to see that my market access and eris market fix have stopped working. Can anyone help me with this (something other than SGS tools).

Use the SGS tools to fix the market, this worked for me on JPM!
im still majorly dissapointed, if this is the official release for definate.
Drove to work today, used gps, it went missing 3 times on a 4 mile drive for around a minute each time, it locks on better innitially, i would say accurate to within 20 metres or so, but as soon as i started driving i got to the top of my street and bam it was 200 metres away.
The lag is still there, there is no comparison with jm9 and lag fix,
i rooted and applied OCLF last night, installed some benchmarks and this is what i got compared with JM9
Linpack (i know its not relevent, and i ran this 4 times on each, i saved the results on a word doc for JM9, unfortunatly i am not rich enough to own two SGS)
JM9 = 14.269
JPM = 14.079
Quadrant
JM9 = 2028
JPM = 1816
An3dBench
JM9 = 6873
JPM = 6642
GPU Bench (these are both relative scores)
JM9 = 32253
JPM = 32214
Nenamark
JM9 = 46.0
JPM = 46.2
obviously these are synthetic benchmarks, but it doesnt change the fact that JPM is slower.
I read today that Froyo will be released via kies in the 3rd week of october, i hope something miraculous happens between now and then
the lag is absolutely awful

Working GPS on galaxy s international

Hi guys
I just thought I should share this with all you unhappy sgs owners who keep complaining about GPS issues.
Im from india with the international i9000 version and I just flashed to darky's rom 4.1 with speedmod and installed ndrive with india maps.
Gps works beautifully and I get locked on in 10 seconds or even less and it's flawless navigation after that.
I feel all those who have issues with gps should try this rom. The rom is great.. lag free and 100% WORKING GPS.
Cheers

Did you have Poor GPS before flashing this ROM ?
With NDrive maps installed .

Extremely. Poor..took forever to lock..and then also was very erratic. Was on XXJPD official rom before that

He's actually right. I was on ultimate rom 1.0 and gps did not work or lock at all. Went back to darkys 4.1 and gps works again. Gps for me used to work so so but in darkys it seems to work a whole lot better. Sgs imho has the worst gps of all phones but now it works, not great but works

Axura 2.1 seems to fix GPS

My Vibrant has had a terrible GPS right from day one. Never locked in less than 10 minutes, and even then very flaky and often not locking at all. I tried a dozen different ROMs out there - including JI6, Bionix, etc. Up until Axura 2.0.5 things did not improve, or seemed to improve but really was the same.
Today I installed Axura 2.1 and to my surprise, GPS is fixed! Locks in around 10-20 secs and all 12 sats are seen, with 8 out of 12 locks. Must be some JK6 component included in the ROM, I don't know. Just wanted to throw this finding out there.
what app are you using to see how many sats are seen and locked?
I use GPS Test. Directly gives 12 sats in view. Get 8 in use within 20 secs.
The first time I booted this ROM and went to Google on the browser, I was surprised to see it get the location within seconds. Usually the GPS icon just sits around trying to get a lock in vain.

Been using Axura 2.1. Works great
Master may be acting like a cry-baby, but his ROMs are great. 2.0.5 was the best I've tried yet. I tried the TW based sXe ROM but it doesn't run as well on my phone.
Eugene and Master are a lot alike in that they've both decided that posting on XDA is too much trouble. Can't really say I blame 'em.

The reason the GPS works is because Master has pulled the "Vold" (GPS part of the ROM) from JK6. The JK6 Modem is also present in this release. Thank Samsung for JK6 and thank Master for including parts of it in his newest Axura release.

One thing I can understand is the frustration that developers must feel over all the hand-holding they have to do when they release a ROM. I'm a complete noob, but I also get tired of seeing the same "OMG I bricked my fone OMG pleez help right away!" When it's always the same mistakes: flashing over lag fixes, flashing the wrong kernel, flashing some uber awesome theme that screws something up, not taking the time to read the threads. And EVERYTHING to fix a problem can be found in the stickies.
Link is not working for Axura 2.1
Link is working fine. Just tried it. It may be blocked by any enterprise class filtering hardware that might be in use on a network if attempted while at work.
It has odd characters in the URL....maybe not supported on some language sets?

That's depends on why you want it. The JK6 Modem likely doesn't affect the GPS AFAIK. It affects other things like Data, Reception, etc. If you want that then flash it alone. Flashing it alone likely won't change the GPS operation at all.
I mentioned the modem update only to note it as a nice but irrelevant change. Sorry for the confusion.
I flashed Axura 2.1 this morning, and my GPS is working now
see my yesterday's GPS post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=862454
Yup, Confirmed. Just flashed and GPS locked within seconds while the Macnut R13 I was using wouldnt get a lock after 5-10 minutes. I do notice though that I have to hold the phone in landscape with the top of the phone on the right side to get clear signal due to the placement of the radio. No biggy there though.

[Q] GPS inaccurate

Hi!
I use Buddy Runner to record my runs. I've been previously using it with a HTC G1 and the accuracy was great.
Now with my ZTE Blade (CyanogenMod 7), the recording is very inaccurate. See my last run: w-w-w.buddyrunner.com/the_sandro (The older ones where recorded with the G1).
Do you have any idea what could be wrong? Does anybody have the same problem?
Thank you in advance
Sandro
Today I tried it with the Stock ROM, the result was much better than yesterday with CM. I will try it again with CM and file a bug, if it will be as bad as yesterday.
Dude is it just me or you run really fast? wow 18km/h average thats impressive

So the main question is ... is it still accurate now?
I didn't flash back to CM yet, but I will report, when I've done.
Sorry I'm not massivly into development of these... Proof in that I'm still trying to upgrade my Orange SF, but I also have an Iphone 3g and both have Geocaching software installed, Iphone accurate to 47m, Orange SF about 7foot, and proven in use for me.
I'm using CM 7 and RunKeeper now. Before I've been using CM Nightly 39 and BuddyRunner. I have no issues with the new setup, the tracks are accurate.
A test stock rom vs latest CM7 would prove if there's some kind of bug in CM's GPS function.

2.3.3 (JVK to JVH) GPS 30 m accuracy

Hi all,
I noticed something weird, ever since my first encounter with Gingerbread (JVK) that the GPS accuracy, although it improved dramatically in real-life situations, in such programs as GPS Status or GPS Test, it gives me 30 m accuracy error, although in most cases shows me where I actually am, or with a few meters of error. This has happened in other releases of GB, such as JVB or JVH (I'm currently on Darky's 10.1), although, like I said, the GPS works much much better than before. Nav programs like iGO or Google Maps are showing me where I am, and the fix is usually between 5 s - 1 min (but that is with an overcast, and between buildings, and stuff like that).
So to sum up: what the deely yo?
Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so, what could be the culprit? I don't mind it much, just a morbid curiosity o' mine..
Thanks in advance!
I don't have 2.3.3 installed, but I would prefer a GPS which overvalues the accuracy than the opposite...
Actually my SGS often reports a 5 or 15 meter accuracy when its position is false by more the 50 meters !
Then there's the fix for you, Herbert. Get GB on your device, and you should notice an improvement.
I prefer it like this also, as you can imagine, but you know humans.. always curious.
i also installed 2.3.3 recently and i noticed that the gps is incredibly fast to locate me, using Darky's but JL2 as modem which works fine with me, couldn't stick with the default modem due to band problems ( i needed 850 band...).
so i can't complain
Hi
Just done a short drive using stock 2.3.3 Gingerbread version (PDA:XWJVH / PHONE:XXJVO / CSC: XEFJV2) and stock configuration.
1st impressions:
The conditions where quite good (no cloud - sunny - no hardtop in the car).
When you drive straight at fixed speed it's often ok (good location - good accuracy).
However sometime, when you stop/start/turn it can take 10 or 20 seconds before noticing it...
I had the same problem with Froyo version. What's better with this version is that now at least, in this situations, instead of reporting a 5 or 10 meter accuracy (as before) the accuracy is now 50 or 100 meter. So I'm much more often than before inside the accuracy circle and, in my opinion, it's quite a improvement.
PS: my SGS GPS has always been crappy. Many seem have a better GPS, so I do not pretend to speak for them. It's just a subjective impression based on one short test on one galaxy S.
I have the feeling that GPS is fine with JVH. Compared to a Desire S or an Iphone 4, getting a signal in difficult conditions is the same.
And I feel that JVH underreports accuracy.
