Hello guys!
Just got my Epic a few weeks ago to replace the old Moment.
Unfortunately.. I like everything about the phone except the main reason I got it over the Evo.. the keyboard. It seems to drop keys a lot, and I know for a fact I pressed them.
For example I can open up a text and type "lalalalalalalalalalalala" and it will drop a l or a or two. It's extremely annoying, the main reason I opted for the keyboard was for good accuracy when replying to emails for work..
As anyone else experienced this issue? Is this a software glitch or is hardware related? If this is a hardware problem.. I will be trading in for the Evo since I'm still within my 30 days.... not to mention the much better support Evo has for updates.. oh and my Network Based Location doesn't work.. wth really? So no location based app can find me with the real gps off. Why couldn't it of been HTC Epic 4g..
Anyways any input on the hardware keyboard would be greatly appreciated.
Sadly, this is a issue with the Epic's keyboard.
All of the Epic's i've played with have this problem, and I think its a combination of hardware and software.
Typing very quickly will cause it to lag and skip a few letters. You have to slow down about 2seconds and it will be fine.
Yeah, I was in the IRC talking to some people and it came off that its a known issue, happens in recovery to (although not quite as bad).. must be a hardware issue.. very disappointing considering the selling point to this phone over the evo is the keyboard mainly.
Does the keyboard have a buffer setting in the kernel somewhere? Maybe a seasoned developer would know haha, my gut tells me this is a buffer issue, you type to fast the buffer will fill up, and a letter or two will drop. Seems logical..
Is it possible that it doesnt deal with "multi touch" well. I know thats a soft keyboard term but typing to fast on the hard keyboard could surface issues if you have not fully depressed the previous key when typing fast???
Just a thought

IF I hit the A and S key at the same time it properly puts in "as"..when I slide "asdfghjkl" it misses a few characters..its not too big of an issue for me as I don't type that fast but there is definitely something :/
Out of curiosity I also tested the same thing on an Samsung Intercept..and Intercept is not effected..
Seems like my keyboard has gotten worse over time. I can't type a word without missing a letter. Really annoying.
I have the same problem with mine. I figured it's a hardware issue and not really so much an issue with lag. I can hit a key and it just won't show up period so that's not lag.
I'm glad I don't type that fast.
It does it to me whether typing fast or not. Every time I send a text I allot myself time for corrections because I know every time it misses 1-2 letters. It's pretty annoying. Not only that but i'm constantly getting unsent txt errors with this phone...never had that problem before.
Ever since ditching Swype for Ultra keyboard I haven't had this problem. I have it enabled so that its auto correct system works for the physical keyboard as well.
I've also had this problem. Very annoying especially being a fast typer. I feel like it is mostly a software issue too. It would be nice to have one of the great developers here take a look into it. This is my biggest problem with the epic.
Yeah it is particularly sad, especially considering that phones like the G1, Motorolas Devour & Cliq (*Puke, my old phone*) as well as other mid-range phones could type flawlessly. Yet one of the best phones in the world IMHO and you can't even type as fast as you'd like.
I'd also like to start a bounty for this soon, I'd be glad to donate to any developer that tracked down the issue and abolished it. (Unless its a hardware issue, in which case were just screwed.)
I am starting to get it as well. Seems to be a known issue but very annoying. If it gets any worse I am just going to get a single piece phone case and say goodbye to the keyboard forever. Sucks to say it but there is no point in using a keyboard that is inaccurate to the point that I need to go back and correct things when I know I typed it correctly the first time
Could it have anything to do with the fact that our keyboards can handle multiple key presses at once? No other phone I have ever had could handle pressing multiple keys at the same time. It might just be an issue of not fully letting go of the previous key when the next key is hit. Or there might be a small delay after a keypress where the phone is waiting to see if another key is going to be pressed in combination to alter the consequences of said key press.
Yeah I noticed I need to slow down. I come from the touch pro 2s sick keyboard.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Gotta say I was having the same problem... then someone here said to try ultra keyboard... and for some reason it has stopped missing the keys.. so I do believe it is more of a software problem. I am on the 24 hour trial and so far it works.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I personally believe this is a software buffer issue with this particular keyboard.
Every physical keyboard needs a buffer, even on your PC. I think if we could increase the buffer on our Epic's keyboard driver which is built into the kernel we could alleviate this problem.
If a actual Dev would be willing to check it out that would be awesome! Not sure if Froyo still has this problem.
I agree with the disappointment... my Moment never missed a beat texting with the keyboard or writing an email, my Epic with all of its potential drops the ball in this department currently.
I hope it can be fixed. And no the solution is NOT to type slower..
I disabled the swype keyboard and it seems to have helped the issue. Maybe its just me? I am running the normal android on screen keyboard with swype unchecked in my settings

no its not the problem..I did a test by pressing both "a" and "s" key at same time and it registered as "as"..if that was the problem it wouldn't have registered that

Sometimes I use swype whenever I need to type a short message. It's the best of both worlds. Sad if you need to disable one of the features just to get the keyboard to work properly.
EDIT: Look at the fail rate when typing ab for a solid minute on my KB:
Abababababababababaababababababababababababaabababababababababababababababababababbaababaababababababababababababababababababaabababababababababbabababbababbabababababbabaababaabbababaababababababababababababababababababbaabababababababaababababaababababaabababababababaabababababababababababaabababababababaababababaababababababababaabababababababababababababbabababababababababababababababababaababababb
This is with swype disabled.
I'm just curious since i've now experienced this disabled keyboard where it's still plugged in and you can see the mouse but the keyboard stops working until you undock and redock it.
But i've noticed the ONLY times it's happened to me have been in the browser.
in no other app have i personally had this bug show up, but in the browser, i'd say every other time i go into it.
i enabled the debug settings and disabled openGL rendering and not only did that get rid of the lag while typing, but also seems to of helped with the keyboard.
i'm just wondering for those of you with the keyboard, have, and where have you gotten this bug?

Also having a random issue where the wifi gets turned off on it's own. luckily it's just a button press to turn it back on, but thats seriously annoying. and only happens with the keyboard.
@SilentMobius: in the browser put the URL as about:config and then go into the settings. it helped with the lag abit, but now it's just as bad. need a tablet version of firefox asap.

Maybe you have a defective keyboard?
honestly starting to think that.
Keyboard still disconects sometimes, trackpad dosn't work at all now, and my music buttons don't control the music player,
and when i press play it plays some german song for about 30 seconds and then stops.
aye wtf.
*edit* well i figured out wtf song it's playing. one of the default songs that game with the device.
*edit2* alright so erased that song, and fixed the trackpad, somehow it thought i pressed the disable trackbad button, haven't gotten a disconnect in a bit either. Music buttons still refuse to work. thinking maybe it's because i have poweramp installed...
*edit3* fixed the music buttons. Opened a music file through the file manager HD app and told it to always use music to open it.
Apparently if you don't have a specific app selected, the buttons don't work since they don't know what app to control. kinda dumb but understandable.
Also had another disconnect, and now i'm 99% sure it's due to the multitouch/scrolling since thats what caused it again.
So going to try not using MT on it and see what happens.
*edit4* alright well everythings fixed except the disconnect which seems to happen every 30 seconds to 5 minutes constantly. and is really ****ing annoying.
i have the exact same issues with my keyboard. Its disconnected about 12 times today for no apparent reason. Seems to be mostly in the browser, but its hard to say if there's any pattern. I'm frustrated as hell right now.

This is crazy. I decided to disconnect the keyboard altogether for now. The Eee Pad is virtually unusable with the keyboard right now. I've opened a support ticket with Asus to see if they can help. I'll update here when I get a response.
aren't we all glad the keyboard has updateable firmware
Actually I notice there is a message when you plug in your keyboard telling you to change your default keyboard to Asus keyboard. I'm going to try that out now.

Same here. I just changed my settings from US keyboard to ASUS keyboard. Let's see if that makes a difference.
If it makes you feel any better, mine works for ~30seconds-1 minute before either hanging or shutting down completely..

Same here. Then, when I tried to restart the tablet, it hung on the ASUS logo. It wouldn't completely restart until I separated the tablet from the dock.

I think you may have figured it out.
I've been using the keyboard now for the last 30 minutes without th trackpad enabled and no disconnects at all. I couldn't use it for more than 5 minutes before without the keyboard freezing.
I can at least get some use out of the keyboard now.
More of us should report this issue to ASUS Support. Here's the link to open a support ticket with them:
http://vip.asus.com/eservice/techserv.aspx
The ASUS Eee Transformer is an option on their support page, but not the keyboard, so I entered my Transformer S/N into the form, but included my keyboard S/N in the comments.
I am just curious to see if anyone with the new dock is NOT having any issues...
Asus, hope you're listening...
I see no poll, and no, none D:
I was typing!
Seriously, though, no issues? No wireless drops, no keyboard stopping working, no battery with a ? or anything?
Which firmware are you using?
Did you do a factory restore?
Did you do an update?
Did you do any of the OTA updates?
(Is that enough questions??)

I use wireless all the time between home and campus, no factory restore, both OTA updates then rooted and flashed with PRIME! v1.1 and blob V5. I've used my friends dock with it for about a day since he doesnt have his tab yet and I have had 2 disconnects in about 30 hours.
Everyone is having these problems, even the review units they sent out a month ago.

Looks, however, can be deceiving. We plugged a USB stick into the side of the Eee Pad's dock and nothing happened. We swapped it for another USB drive, we tried the other port, and nothing continued to happen. We jacked in an SD card and still got no response. It was only after a complete reboot of the tablet that those ports magically began functioning, but that wasn't the only issue we experienced with the docking solution. On multiple occasions, the Eee Pad wouldn't recognize the connection or disconnection between itself and its peripheral part, resulting in it either ignoring our input on the dock or expecting the physical keyboard to still be attached and consequently refusing to offer a software text input method.

Dock Issues
As impressed as I was with the fact that ASUS took a tablet OS and made it work in both the tablet and notebook worlds, the Eee Pad Transformer dock isn't without its issues. As I alluded to before, there are times when the dock simply doesn't work. I'll be using the dock, scrolling around or typing and then all of the sudden the keyboard and trackpad stop working altogether. Sometimes the solution is as simple as undocking and redocking the Eee Pad, but other times it requires a full reboot. It's frustrating.

ASUS knew all about these issues prior to release (US release, anyway). Anyone who read the prerelease reviews knew of the problems, because all of the trustworthy reviewers mentioned them. I still preordered because I thought the hold up on US sales was because they were fixing these issues. But they didn't fix anything! They are knowingly selling lemons.
I love my Transformer and I love most ASUS products that I own but the dock is total piece of crap they should have delayed the release of.
no issues yet, but i've only really used it for maybe 45 min. i'll put some more work on it later tonight and see if any issues creep up.
Yeah, don't get too happy too fast.
I was actually typing a post here giving my impressions of the dock and one of my lines was, "I haven't run into any of the issues with locking up that others have been experiencing."
Let's just say I had to go back and delete that line (and finish my post with the touchscreen!)
Also all the issues are as far as I can tell software issues not hardware issues which means firmware updates can fix em. Asus also told anand the firmware updates are on their way.

just google anand transformer review and you get it. The review states all the issues but also states asus telling them they are aware of the issues and are going to release a firmware update.
I'm not noticing any issues with mine. I'm using Prime v1.2 custom ROM. At first when I got the keyboard dock I had what I thought were some weird problems. Turns out I just wasn't pushing the tablet all the way in to the dock before I locked it. I didnt realize it because it seemed to fall into where I was putting it, and the lock would slide about half way over- i thought that was just as far as it goes.
Anyone having troube- I recommend double checking that you are firmly pushing your tablet in to the dock with the lock slider in the unlocked position. Then make sure you are able to slide the lock slider all the way to the right (fully locked position).
If you're already doing that, then I suppose you really do have a problem- hopefully it is software related and not hardware.
My dock is *almost* usable with the trackpad disabled.. Still likes to shut down on it's own (it's getting a shutdown key.. which is funny considering that's not a key on the dock.. actually says "shutting down" then shuts down.. or wifi turns off..
With the trackpad enabled, it crashes/hangs within a few minutes. (usually requires holding down the power button for 10 seconds to fix..)
Curious - what's everyone's dock model #?
Go to settings / about tablet, and scroll to the buttom. Mine is EP101-0207 and it doesn't work right.. Are there any different versions out there?

Would be nice if people voting waited a couple of days of normal usage before answering the poll. I would bet a fair amount of money that quite a few people will vote "No problems" and then the problem will show up for them 8 hours later. A lot of the people having these issues are starting out with no problems and then seeing the problem and then seeing it get progressively worse.

Two suggestions that may or may not help:
Go into recovery and
1) Do a fix permissions.
2) wipe dalvik cache in advanced. (note: this will cause a longer that usual boot up time on the next reboot)
3.1 rooted wifi, no problems here
Latest version of thumbs keyboard has a mode to go back to the full keyboard.
Click the thumbskeyboard icon and it will switch modes
Thanks again, everyone. Third time wiping and reflashing was, apparently, a charm. Hopefully it's for real this time, otherwise my Xoom might just find itself transformed into an expensive frisbee. I still don't know what went wrong. I never did get a chance to try fixing permissions or wiping Dalvik cache. Anyway, it's appropriate that today is Friday the 13th.
i never rooted the Zoom and I have that problem with my keyboard too. Long press on the / sign and the @ don't pop up like it used to. Or any other keys showing there alternate. Or holding the Backspace button and it doesn't delete charectors all together?

Unfortunately it sounds like you might have to wait for an update, as Asus downgraded the wifi driver for some reason in the 3.1 version. Either that or you could re-install an older firmware ofc.

Rooting 3.1 couldn't get much easier - check out ANY release to rooted > 1.4 PRime guide. The only difference between 3.0 and 3.1 in the rooting process is you need to download an extra 200mb file to install an update (well downgrade) to the transformer before rooting.

Same problem. It happens when it's been sitting in sleep mode for a while. (It) does not matter if you set it to always stay on or not in settings. I have RMA'd mine due to the dead left speaker but that was mentioned on my list of problems so maybe it will get fixed but I doubt it somehow.

I got my Transformer on release day and it's had this wifi issue since day one. I've been through non-root/stock firmware; rooted/Prime 1.4 and the issue has persisted. I just turn the wifi off and then back on again (when it happens) using the keyboard dock shortcut or a widget on the display. For me it's not a big deal but I can see how it might annoy others.

if its a permanent isue i would rater just return it
I've had my Transformer since release day too, and I've not had this issue, until yesterday! Now I'm having it every other time it wakes roughly. I have not changed anything on my router, and I'm using a fixed channel. I'm way out in the country, so there are no interfering stations either. It is funny that it just started up.

funny thing is, today my isues are gone. Sounds like software bug. Do you use stock rom or?
Yes, all stock. I'll have to think about what I installed yesterday. I did install that monitor program that Amazon was offering free.
i dont think its a app that is messing up, mine or more or less clean, only got a few apps installed..
I have never had this issue with my stock TF. It goes in an out of sleep all the time and the Wifi is always available.
