[Q] Installing kernal and roms - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hello everyone, I'm new to this android world, so excuse any newbie questions. I just rooted my transformer using NvFlash. Now I'm ready to install custom roms and kernels. The questions I have is
1. which kernel should I install? netformer or clemsyn-blades? both can overclock to 1.6 and both some upgrade features. also, which one is more stable?
2. if I install custom rom or kernel, will it erase all the data on my transformer? meaning all my save game data, pictures, etc...

This should help:

Clemsyn-Blades. Netformer kernel is currently for 3.0. Clemsyn-Blades is compatible with 3.1. 3.1 is the ROM you want to be using.
You already have a custom ROM because you used NVFlash.

As long as you don't wipe your data when flashing rom you will not lose it.
Install kernel will not wipe data.

Agreeing with the guys above. Personally I like the PRIME 1.4 rom and Clemsyn-Blades kernal.
Installing the ROM your better off wiping first (but you don't have to... just might lead to other problems) so backup your data. Would also recommend using the [Recovery] ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1-solarnz-R3 Modded for Internal media version of clockwork so that it won't wipe ALL your data, just the 'installed apps' and OS.
Kernal goes on after the Rom and doesn't wipe anything (though again I would recommend wiping cache & Dalvik-cache before & after).

thank for the help. good to know the TF community have such good support.

I think NVFlash flashes that version of Clockwork Recovery. I know it flashes Clockwork Recovery for sure, it's most likely that version but I never went to look.
So OP might have it already.

can anyone confirm on what zephiK said about the CWM version from nvflash is in fact the same as ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1-solarnz-R3 Modded for Internal media

[Q] Restoring my mt4g

I rooted my phone. I flashed it. and i was attempting to put in iced glacier. I messed up one of the steps -.-
On the clockworkmod recovery i backed up my phone.

I've waited for a while.. But all i'm getting is the mytough 4g screen >.<

I think I am in the same boat as the OP.
I rooted the Mt4g, backed up stock Sense Froyo with Clockworkmod 3, then installed Cyanogenmod 7 with Clockworkmod 3.
I want to revert back to the stock Sense Froyo. I simply did a restore in Clockworkmod 3 to my Sense Froyo backup, and now all it shows is the white Mt4g screen.
Will clearing the cache and data before restoring the Sense Froyo be my fix too?
Thanks. OP, didnt mean to take over your thread but I think we are having the same issue so didnt want to make another thread.
The version of ClockworkMod Recovery you are using MATTERS. It MATTERS VERY MUCH.
Froyo based ROMs, including Stock and Iced Glacier, must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 2. Gingerbread based ROMs such as CM7 must be backed up, restored, and installed with CWMR Version 3.
A higher number does not mean better. There are filesystem differences between Froyo and Gingerbread that require the correct tools.
There is a custom version of CWMR for the MT4G that can handle both types of filesystems (assuming you haven't already used the wrong tools) -- it is called version "3.0.0.6" -- you can look for it on the Development Sub Forum.
Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I did not know that information at the time when I created the restore file.
When restoring with Clockworkmod 3 failed, I flashed Clockworkmod 2 and restored the recovery made by 3 using 2. Its working so far... It did show one or two errors when I restored.

So i'm new to all of this.
I don't want to make the wrong move.
I've got CWMR v3.0.0.5
Just to be clear. I go into CWMR. Do i wipe cache partition, then wipe dalvik cache, wipe data.. then restore again? or reboot system now?
OR do I need to flash CWMR 2 or 3.0.0.6? If so. How do i do that without going through rom manager? I'm noob.
Thanks!

That is incompatible with Iced Glacier. You can't use 3.0.0.5 with Iced Glacier, or with the Stock ROM. Ever.
In addition, clearing /cache and /data and the Dalvik cache (which is inside of the /data partition, so won't actually do anything if /data is also reformatted) will not solve your problem. Because ....
The partition with the problem is /system -- which is where the ROM lives. That partition is now in EXT4 format, which a Froyo-based ROM cannot access. The Froyo kernel boots (from the /boot partition) and gets errors when it looks in /system.... and reboots. Hence, your boot loop.
Your easiest fix would be to install CM7 so that you have a functional Android OS on your phone. THEN ..... after getting CM7 running, flash a version 2 image of CWMR from ROM Manager (included in CM7), then boot it, and install Iced Glacier.

Sounds like that's the course of action. Any threads leading to how to install CM7 in my situation? I'm watching youtube videos on different things trying to learn the best option. But I don't really want to trust tho
From Recovery 3.0.0.5, mount your SD card for use with USB (in the mounts and storage menu) and transfer a CM7 .zip to the card. Get it from http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=glacier
Factory wipe / System Reset from the main menu of Recovery, and install the .zip as you did Iced Glacier.
----
CM7 does not include Google Apps. If you were intending to actually =use= the ROM instead of using it temporarily as part of a rescue process, you will likely want them. The .zip can be found at http://android.d3xt3r01.tk/cyanogen/gapps/gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip -- install from Recovery after installing CM7.
----
Boot CM7. You'll find ROM Manager in the App drawer. Use it to Flash a version 2.x CWM Recovery -- look under "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" at the bottom of the ROM Manager main screen.
Long press the power button. Select Reboot. CM7 will prompt you for what kind of boot. Select Recovery.
Do another full wipe/factory reset. Install Iced Glacier .zip as you did previously, and reboot.

So the second zip is only if I want to keep the CM7 ROM? If I do, then I use that zip to get Google Apps?
Also, before I look under "All ClockworkMod recoveries" will I have to install CWM recovery 3.0.0.6 or 2.x first?
In that case. I'll do some research on CM7 too. Idk if iced glacier is better or CM7. Maybe it just depends on preference?

3.0.0.6 could be used instead of a 2.x version. But it requires its own manual install. Based on the questions in this thread, I'm not recommending CWM Recovery 3.0.0.6 at this point, as you folks do not have a functioning Android system and would have to modify the 3.0.0.6 install procedures. There's only so much knowledge a person can absorb at once. Get your phones working, first.

It is =entirely= a matter of personal preference. There are plenty of people who prefer one over the other. There are also those who prefer neither, and are using yet again another ROM. Poke around in the forum threads here to get a feel for what people think.

sweet. So i'll go with the 2.x version then. In that case, I won't have to install it? it'll just be there?
I'm not at home so I can't try any of it out yet. Just trying to learn as much as i can first
ROM Manager should be able to pull the image from the Internet. CM7, even without Google Apps, should automagically connect your phone and its number and its data plane to T-Mobile's network.
zomg. this is sweet. Thanks for all your help!!! I'm gonna keep CM7 for now. I installed the google app zip. Any suggestions on where to start exploring? The main thing that i wanted to root my phone for was to take screenshots. threads? Bah. so much to explore!
So if on 3.0.0.6 and wanting to go from CM7 to IG, you recommend going into "all clockworkmod recoveries", switching over to a 2.0 version (does it matter which?), and then doing backup, wipe, install?
No. 3.0.0.6 is a unique, one-off version that supports both ext3 and ext4 file systems, and deals correctly with both Froyo and Gingerbread ROMs.
If you were on 3.0.0.5, and wished to install a Froyo ROM, you would back up first, before flashing a 2.x Recovery. Think about it.

Updating from 3.1 to 3.2

Hi, just enquiring can I install a 3.2 custom rooted rom over a stock 3.1 rooted rom? Or do I need to flash stock 3.2 as a base first?
Ash

-You don't need a base.
-On Custom ROM (you will Never Get a ACER OTA Update, you will not have ACER's Stock Recovery)
If on HC v3.1 STOCK (non rooted) You'll need to :
1. Download IconiaRoot 1.3.apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=648570&d=1310086702
2. Use any file Explorer (like ES File explorer) to install IconiaRoot. Root Tablet with this program (realize you are voiding warrenty)
3. from Market, download "Acer Recovery installer" Then run this app to install "ClockworkMod Recovery v1.34" (which will need ROOT to install CWM)
-Optional: Update to "CWM Recovery v1.6v2.zip" (later) http://www.mediafire.com/?idkrgvv22463v2d
If on ANY (rooted) ROM:
Reboot into CWM Recovery MOD : [Volume Down] + [POWER] long press.
(A) Backup and Restore -> Full Backup ->
(B) Wipe Menu -> Wipe... Cache, data (factory reset), dalvik-cache, battery stats
(C) Mounts and Storage Menu -> Format... System, data, cache, flexrom
(D) Install from Zip File -> Choose Zip File from SD Card -> {any ROM.zip, Superuser.zip, CWM Recovery v1.6v2.zip, etc}
(E) Reboot System.
***Read up on Custom ROM thread before you begin.

Thanks, i'm already running stock rooted 3.1. I don't care about the ota updates as they never worked from the start. I just add them manually anyway.
I'm asking about custom roms in general.

To answer your question, no you do NOT need anything special and yes you can just flash over anything your want. Flashing in a ROM is like installing Windows on PC with installer CD's. Anything on your computer is gone, just like installing a custom ROM.
Hope this helps,

This couldnt be more wrong.
First of all, you can upgrade windows and keep everything. If i'm running vista and have a 7 upgrade disk, i dont lose everything.
Second, different roms are designed for different things. You can flash stock 3.2 over stock 3.1 without a wipe and it will work just fine. You cant flash flexstriker over epiphany over thora rom over stock and expect it to work. You cam flash flexstriker r7 over flexstriker r6, but not over another rom.
You dont have to lose everything, dont listen to this guy.

No they are not. Not trying to make an argument here, so do not take it as one.
When you get an update, it replaces the boot.img and then runs scripts to update the system image. This is not normally considered a flash. Flashing, normally means using nvflash to load a ROM or image wiping the tablet totally clean.
If you mean that an update replaces the boot.img and the blob therefore it's a flash, then ok. But still the system image is only updated via scripts. This is how we hack an update.zip. We change the update scripts to add root and then re-zip it; therefore the update actually adds root.
Hope this helps clear things up, and remember we're all in this together so keep your stick on the ice.

[Q] Superclean MS2

Hello all. Somewhat new to flashing ROM's but not rooting. I'm wanting to flash the SC MS2. I've got a good backup using the CWM without issue. But now kind of looking for straight-forward info on the ROM flash. I've looked at the SC MS2 thread from skynet11 and I'm not sure what Atlas is for so I'm hesitant to move on.
I'd like to think that since I've got my backup of the ROM and data/apps, I can just use three-button on the phone and flash from the SD.
Any suggestions/guidance is appreciated.
Cheers

What rom/kernel are you currently running? That will determine how you proceed with flashing SC MS2.
The Atlas file is for getting your phone back to stock and will come packaged with the stock rom - and you flash stock roms via Odin. Custom roms are flashed via cwm. Place .zip on SD card, boot to recovery, wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache, and flash
Its on EH03 and kernel version is 2.6.35.7
How should I proceed? Wipe and then Flash with cwm? Or do I even need to wipe the data?
Thanks again for your help. Hopefully as I learn more I can contribute back as well.

Once you have CWM properly installed, download the Superclean MS2 .zip file into your SD card. (Make sure the .zip is OK, first).
Then go into CWM and wipe data/factory reset 1st. Then select "install zip from SD card". Then select "choose zip from SD card" and find the file. Select "Yes" to flash. I suggest you also wipe Dalvik Cache by going into the Advanced menu.
After everything is done, reboot, and if you want , you can flash a kernel like KBG.
Enjoy!
Thanks!
Although, What benefits are there to flashing the kernel?
Also, and sorry if I'm being a bother, but I "thought" I did a backup this morning and I'm looking at my SD card in the cwm->backup folder and I don't see the timestamp I thought I'd see from today - there's one there but from 2000-01-01 - is that one it?
Thanks so much!
Once last thing - the gapps.zip - how's that installed? Thanks

It's just flashed the same way as any .zip file, like the SuperClean.
Benefits of using KGB? Many... like being able to overclock and undervolt, back light notifications, and enabling Voodoo lag fix.
I haven't done that many CWM backups, because.. they are not that useful, IMHO. I don't have anything worth backing up in my phone anyway. (All my contacts are in Exchange) and your SD card contents are untouched. Plus, I can get all my apps back from Android Market in no time. If there are some specific apps (and its data) that you want to backup, I would use Titanium backup.
Perfection! Thanks so much!! now on SC without issue. Was a bit concerned when I didn't know how long it would take to wipe the data (seemed forever but in reality only a few mins), but flashed it, then the gapps and have restored the apps I wanted using Titanium. CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again very much!
Great thread, I am in the same situation: currently on SC3 M1 with KGB kernel and EH03 radio.
I want to flash to SC3 M2, keep the KGB kernel, and possibly try different radio. I just want to make sure I have my steps in the correct order:
1. Download SC3 M2 .zip to SD card
2. Download KGB .zip to SD card
2. Backup apps to SD card (with Ti or Astro)
4. Reboot into CWM recovery (red)
5. Wipe data, cache partition, dalvik cache
6. Disable Voodoo Lagfix and /System lagfix???
7. Install SC3 M2 from ZIP
8. Boot up into SC3 M2
9. Reboot into CWM recovery
10. Wipe cache partition and dalvik cache
11. Install KGB from ZIP
12. Boot into SC3 M2, then reboot back into CWM recovery
13. Enable voodoo lagfix and /system lagfix
14. Reboot
Am I correct about the points where I would disable lagfix?
At what point would I flash a different radio?
Thanks!

So EC09 radio will work with KGB_EH03_FA16 and SuperClean3 Milestone 2?
I am looking at droidstyle's guide now and it says the EC09 radio is compatible with any Fascinate ROM.
Will I need to re-flash my kernel or ROM after Odining the EC09 radio? I am planning to just follow the directions in section 7 here, so please stop me if there is anything different/additional I need to do!

The Defy TWRP works on the Bravo, but its only up to version 2.1 and can't install large Aroma roms (WR, Pikachu, etc). Your better off reading the thread over at Defy Development. Its neat and works, but our custom CWM 5 is the best for us in terms of reliability and stability.

Its installed be default with CM10 or PA. The newer the rom, the newer the recovery.
You can copy the zip/system/bootmenu/.... to other roms to get the touch ui in the bootmenu, just don't overwrite your current roms init scripts....and use a PRE 2nd Kernel zip when porting the bootmenu to non custom kernel roms. This isn't something I'd advise doing cause if you don't know what your fully doing you can easily put yourself in a position to flash the sbf. I sbf'd 3 times adding the JB Touch bootmenu to CM7.

I have a couple of ideas, but I'd be guessing with all of them. Probably just an error from CM10 using a newer recovery than Mokee. Since CM10's /system was restored, so was its bootmenu\recovery -- try doing a full restore now that you're using the same recovery that backed it up .
Crap like this is why we need an unlocked bootloader, or even just a place to hide a custom recovery -- with every rom you flash, your recovery changes and bad things can\have happened. While its nowhere as bad as it once was, problems like yours still occur from time to time. Its the same reason that there's so many posts with people having problems from using BandroidX Recovery -- its a very old CWM based recovery that uses different formats than whats used now (can't even install newer roms with it). Old and new don't usually play nicely with us .

Yeah, i tried to restore backup using cm10 recovery and although it said cant restore .android.secure something like that(iam not quite sure) it restored system as well as data.
The thing is i like mokee os .its speed, clean and clear... ecetra but it is not jelly bean.can't we have a cm10 tweaked and modified for bravo.of course I love your PA jelly bean there are lots of tablet tweaks can you also add some other functions like in pimp my rom.
And thanks man for answering my queries

clockwork mod recovery question when installing roms

Hey guys, just a quick question, do I have to wipe userdata when installing a new ROM? Should I install a rom and hope it works? And then suffer the consequences? I'm running stock with Trinity kernel, trying to go to latest cm 10 or whatever it is.
Thanks

You can get away with over-flashing (or "dirty flashing") very closely related ROMs.
For instance if you were testing CM nightlies from night to night.
In general though it is not a good idea, and even in the case of closely-related ROMs there really are no guarantees. It is certainly not a good idea for a random pairing of before/after ROMs.
BTW the "wipe" that you want is a wipe of /data that clears everything but /data/media (so the "/sdcard" doesn't get nuked), plus a wipe of /cache. In TWRP this is called "factory reset"; I'm not sure what it is called by CWM (note that in the stock recoveries all of /data gets wiped by the "factory reset", so the term means slightly different things in different contexts)
good luck
Hey thanks a lot. Did not know it would't erase the "sdcard" so I installed cwm cm and trinity kernel. Then reinstalled all my apps with titanium. Okay one more question. How exactly do I install cm and trinity kernel? Here's how I did it. I went into ROM manger, downloaded cm, added gapps and then clicked the add zip and selected trinity kernel.. Is this right? Does it matter what order you go in? How would I get rid of trinity kernel? If I were to get rid of trinity kernel, I would have to install a different kernel right? Cm doesn't come with a kernel since its just a ROM right? Also does the cm 10 come with a boot animation? Since I installed trinity second, I have trinity boot animation..
Thanks again!

Whew that's a lot of questions - I'll answer a few but not all. (I don't ever use ROM manager.)
By convention, all dev ROMs come with a boot image (which contains a kernel and ram disk), so if you combine an arbitrary ROM and kernel, the kernel needs to be flashed after the ROM.
If you don't like that kernel and want to revert to the one the comes with the ROM, just dirty-flash the ROM again. (This is an example where dirty-flashing should be completely safe - it's the identical ROM! /system won't change even though it is being flashed... unless you customized the ROM since you installed it. FYI some root-aware apps & even TiBu can do this depending how you use it... so dirty-flashing could bust things in that circumstance).
An even safer method would be to get a nandroid backup of the ROM before you flash the kernel mod. TWRP allows you to the option to restore only individual partitions, and this would allow you to restore only the boot partition. I'm not sure if you have this kind of flexibility in CWM or ROM manager.
Backups give you freedom and confidence. Make sure you are making them, and getting copies of them off the tablet, as it is easy to make a mistake and accidentally wipe all of /data including the pseudo-SD card.
