evo shift 4g as a first cell need some info please - EVO Shift 4G General

hello, i noticed that amazon wireless is selling the evo shift 4g for $39.99 and was thinking of getting it. it would be my first non prepaid cell but not my first android device as ive been running cm7 on a nook color for about 8 months now. what are the pros/cons of the phone? what are all the available roms and which one is best? what do you think of the touchpad? thanks!

For that price if I could I would get another one. As your first non-prepaid you'll be very happy. The touch pad is great. As far as what ROM, that's a matter of how you use it and your personal preferance. Can't think of any Cons to owning the phone. But I'm bias. Absolutely love my Shift. For ROMs just check the Development section.

CM7 is available for the Shift 4G, so you would feel right at home. No real complaints about the phone, other than there not being a way to silence the ringer, and still allow notification sounds to come through . If the phone is on silent, the notification sounds are off, and same with vibrate.
I'm running a kernel, by x99Percent, or something like that, overclocked to 1.5 gHz. It runs smooth, and doesn't lock up. 1.6 and above (max at 1.8), and the phone will lock up.
But, as far as roms go, you have your choices:
Cyanogenmod
AOSP
Rooted stock type roms
Leaked GB rom for the Shift (soon to have the OTA update available)
Sense 3.0 rom

thank you both. and i read on sprint.com that you can download the gb update thru menu, settings, update or wait till the 20th for it to be force on ya.

About the volume. Seriously? I have Evo 4g, and if you go to menu>settings>sound you can change ring volume to 0 and notifications to whatever you want. Media, as well.
You can't do that on a shift? It's damn near the same phone.
And as for the gb update. On Evo forum, we've been running several different roms that use the shift/speedy gb update as a base since about april 30th.

You most definitly can silence ringer and not notifications. And don't update to GB thru Sprint. Just grab one of the rooted versions from the Dev forum.
^ Shift Faced

You can. But notification is tied to ringer by default, you just have to unclick it

I know it's possible, in theory, and I haven't tested a notification coming in, but here is what happens on my phone:
Notification is not set to mimic the ringer
Set notification volume.
Set ringer volume to 0, notification volume is still where I set it. Click OK.
Go back in to volume settings, ringer is 0, notification volume is 0.
Change notification volume again. Click OK
Go back to volume settings, notification volume is 0 again.
If I set the ringer to the first audible level, and even if notification volume is 0, and click ok, when I go back to volume settings, the notification volume is where I want it.
Also, not related to this thread, but; how do I multi-quote? All other message forums I go to, you click on Multi-Quote on all threads you want to quote, and then click "Quote" on the last one, and all show up in your reply. This board, I can't do the same. I click on Multi-quote, and then quote, and it just shows the message where I clicked Quote button.

Thanks for the info.
I know someone who wanted to upgrade; gonna call Sprint if this deal will work with an upgrade (we're already using the Everything Data 450 plan mentioned in the offer so hopefully we'll get a second Shift for $40)
I payed $150 for mine but love it. Best phone I've had so far.

I know this is a few days old, but if you havent bought it already, Radio Shack is giving them free to new customers...great deal for them, but bugs the crap out of me that upgrades dont get the same pricing when we are signing the same new 2 year agreement...ah well, at least we get a $50 price drop in a few days...

The shift hands down is one of the best phones I have used! And while htc sense between the 2 evos stayed the same they are NOT the same phone and the shift is better minus a front facing cam and hdmi, and the ffc was choppy as sh*t along with hdmi out when it was on the big screen so what kind of perks are them?

flash player 10.1 question

Is there a full version (not lite) working on the epic? I picked up my epic yesterday, came from the hero. Im rooted with the syndicate rom, but noticed the "fully loaded" version only had the flash lite...is the full 10.1 not available?
Ive searched around the forum but searching for anything with "flash" doesnt exactly narrow down the results very well, lol.

Hey I remember you from the Hero I noticed the drama but have no idea what its all about. Is it surrounding Froyo? Would love to get filled in sometime
Here's another question...any issuses with the syndicate rom and getting headphones to work? I use an AUX cable to listen to music in my car, and on the hero it switched to headphones when plugged in, but on the epic it doesnt change and keeps outputting sound through the phone. Any ideas?
Ya, I just landed here a week ago, also coming from hero. I have got to agree about the drama. This is actually my Third xda community and I have never seen such a climate. Hope it calms down. I come here for cooperation.
That seems to be an issue with non-stock kernels, or if you are running tock, you aren't running the most current firmware, they have fixed it. I'm running froyo and loving it. I am still using dj29, no dk05. I don't see the need, everything I want works, ujust missing 2 paid apps in the market (understandable due to non official business). Got hulu working great, created a bookmark shortcut to go to the widget player so I can run it fullscreen in landscape. Love this phone, just ignore the drama. I have made 0 comments on it cause really, I don't care, I'm happy as a pig in **** with my froyo. There is definitely a battery boost, too as long as you wipe battery stats properly.

HTC aria 2.2.2 update review

So I decided I'd give the new official update for the HTC aria a shot despite all the talk about not being able to root it yet. So far some pretty important things I've noticed is the fact that there is no sideloading. I saw someone on here say that it would be able to sideload - incorrect. The second big thing is the fact that it does not have the touchpad button wake. You have to use the power button which is a huge flaw for me. Someone also said that it would be capable of overclocking- as far as I know right now I don't think you can, but I can't be 100% sure yet because of the lack of sideloading and the 4.99 for setcpu. Some of the cool new features I do like is the mobile hotspot capabilities, live wallpapers, and the market update. So now I want to see what others have to say about it. Please come tell me what you've found!

I want to understand ..
The updates are made automatically?
If I purchased from ebay the device in 3 / 3 and it had not arrived yet, am I expected to see within 2.2 and unable to root?

Did you purchase a used phone? Was it already rooted? Did the seller install the latest update from HTC/AT&T?
The 2.2 update from at&t is not an Over-the-air (OTA) update. It's offered by at&t via the HTC web site. The update, therefore, takes work on the user's part. It's not automatic.
That said, if you purchase a phone from eBay that is factory fresh from at&t, it's possible it already has the 2.2 update - I put the odds at 50%.
For what it's worth, the only thing wrong with the stock build of this device's ROM is the at&t bloatware/crapware. Other than that, it's a solid device, and there are ways to customize the phone to your liking.

Use the stock HTC sync software that came with your Aria - when prompted to update, don't do it!

I'm not sure about enabling RTL support, but I think people have been talking about it on these forums.
At first my phone felt quick when it was processing, but initial response to screen presses felt slightly laggy. I was concerned. But after running it for a few weeks now, without a task killer, it feels like quite a quick more featured phone. Seems like there was a calibration and optimization duration there. Maybe it's in my head? Very happy with the upgrade, especially for apps to SD!
Oh, and add gingerbread keyboard from the market and the phone is twice as good!

You can do side loading by using android injector. You can find it at at harmonyhollow or softpedia. Just type in Android Injector at google. It also allows you to install multiple apps at the same time.

How do you get Apps to SD to work on this rom?
In the past I was using Darktremor's a2sd preinstalled on the Liberated Aria roms.
I am now on the Liberated version of the rom (thanks to Gene Poole - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970272), but I don't know how to do apps2sd here. I have my sdcard partitioned with ext3 (512 Mb), but it's not getting used automatically.

Well after reading the community forums at sprint.com and android forums, Ive seen people getting different results/bugs such as:
-Netflix stopped working(posted on this forum)
-Other Misc applications not functioning
-Shortcut icons appearing default with no detail
-Voicemail notification continuously appearing with no voicemails
-GPS Icon appearing even when the GPS is turned off
-Text messages taking longer to send
-Calls not connecting
Im sure there is more but these are the ones that caught my eye.
So thats why I was waiting to make sure there isnt another update to fix some of these issues.
Not having Netflix after getting a taste sucks the most
I can say that my gps icon is on and it shows off on the top. Text messages show a number when there are none. Great I updated and now I cant root.

Or until Synergy is finally released.
O wow, actually just replaced my evo through sprint. they sent me a brand new one, in an envelope(no accesories) thank god I have been living with a buggy refurb for almost a year.
Only problem is it is preloaded with 2.3!?!?!? the sprint rep said it was funny also 2 other customers received brand new ones, thats unheard of from sprint IMO
maybe they want to make everyone on 2.3 because so many using the wifi hotspots...idk
so I would have redone the universal root method like I did before hand, but read here first ......so no go on universal root?

It's called "gaining knowledge, keeping informed, and keeping the options open". Some people, do not necessarily wish to modify every device they use, at every single opportunity. Since discovering XDA, I have had 6 or 7 different devices, and though I have not flashed a custom ROM to each one of them, I've done a couple. Flashing or not, this entire forum has helped me in some form with each device.

I was running Mik 1.3 for a few days and upgraded to 1.4 yesterday. From the above, only two apply on this rom: The Netflix & the GPS icon. The GPS works, but in my case, it appears as off whether I have it on or off. The NetFlix problem is an issue that NetFlix is working on and not a "bug" of GB. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that somewhere on here when the problem first came up.
Having 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1 grealy outweight those two bugs for me. Out of all the 2.3.3 roms I've tried, this one has been my favorite by a long shot. You just have to set up the phone properly. It took me a good couple of hours to format the SD card and upgrade the ext3, transfer all the files back and forth from the SD card, restoring all my apps and reorganizing my phone, etc.
Well worth it, IMO.
The only issue I have noticed is my Exchange inbox icon sometimes shows that I have a new/unread email when I don't. Besides that, everything is working faster and smoother. The battery life improvement is by far the most dramatic change, imo. One more thing that I personally like is the message received notification toggle is now the first option under message settings...def makes shutting off the notifications faster, which is good when you need to hide new texts from the gf

You could say that. verizon is pretty crappy
Verizon ruin great devices, I'm so glad that in the UK the carriers are pretty quick to update the devices and do not ruin the devices.
My bet is that it is:
Modified framework to make PSSuite® work with 2.3.3
Load of UPDATED Verizon bloat (I'm tempted to call it something else)
Patches to stop you rooting - why do they do this?
Or maybe its an incremental 2.3.4 update...

I'm betting 2.3.4 with psn and ps store. With Sony's big announcement being ps store now available in the us and psn

I'm willing to bet it's just a security upgrade. It prevents us from rooting, installs ALL Verizon Apps and also remove's the Android Market and forces us to use the Verizon App Store.
Sounds like past updates I've had with other Verizon phones.

Actually, GSM can do so much more than CDMA in terms of customizing. We should be the "jelly" ones. Hell, even the AT&T phone has a couple extra features compared to ours. They to are on 2.3.3 still though. But again with so many GSM Roms they have more than us.

I got it to work a few hours ago.
I had to revert to stock and then update profile.
Works though, I am also not in the coverage area. But I can make calls.
Thanks for the tip frogman, I had to update profile as well but it worked. Another note for others: The MSL password freedompop gave me during its setup instructions did not work, but updating profile afterwards did.

I bought it a couple years ago thinking it had a bad ESN and I could save a few bucks using it on Cricket. I would have never imaged that today I would be activating it for totally free service.
My alarm clock has just become highly capable off wifi again lol.
Crazy.
It's time to get back in to developing on this thing again.
Update: Seems to work nicely so far. The only things I'd note are that the VoIP is a tad slow. If I make a call in the same room with someone I notice about a 1 second delay between them actually talking and me hearing them on the phone. Also I really don't like the text messaging app. It cuts off part of the text message with the balloon graphic. Not sure if there's any way around that. It'd be nice if they'd hijack the default messaging app in the same way they did the phone app so it'd be truly seamless. But oh well, it is FREE.
Has anyone tried this with a non-stock ROM like Cyanogenmod?
i got it working, finally. i had to get my own msl unlock code.
Anyways, i just got the phone off of CL. I want to root it.
before i can root it, i need to unlock the bootloader, and it would factory reset the phone. Would the factory reset mess up the freedompop setup?
thanks

I just got my (retired) OG set up on this. Was pretty straightforward. Once the device is activated, you should be able to unlock/S-OFF/whatever. I'm about to check and see if it's possible to use a JellyBean ROM with it. It should be fine.
Works on CM10.1. And I can still use Google Voice for my other number through the native dialer, if I want. Very nice.

Any ROM should work, as long as you activate it on stock first. Once it's activated it should stay that way.
Keep in mind though that you lose WiMAX once you flash a non-Gingerbread ROM. Call quality did seem adequate over 3G, though (surprisingly).
Would someone mind sharing the search terms you used to find instructions on how to flash to Freedom pop? I've searched Google and even on Freedom pop's website. I'm willing to search, but just need a little help to get started.

you dont need to flash to it, but you do need to have the right phones:
Phones you can bring:
- Source Gizmodo
HTC EVO 4G
Samsung Epic 4G
Samsung Epic 4G Touch
Samsung Galaxy S III 16GB
LG Optimus S
Motorola Photon 4G
HTC EVO 3D
Boost Prevail by Samsung
Galaxy Nexus by Samsung
Nexus S 4G by Samsung
http://freedompop.com/byod
- after you put your address, you will need to put the meid of the phone, then it will tell you if you phone will work with them
Many thanks!

EVO 3D doesn't work - I tried it. I think the EVO 4G might be the only phone they're supporting initially (since it's the one they offer). And you have to use the MEID DEC - HEX won't work.
Loading went well. Speed test over 1mb down. Made a test phone call... Unbelievable! This can't be real. Lol All, thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Yep, the only phone you can activate right now is the Evo 4G or the Evo design. Some people are having luck with the Galaxy SII, but it's not universal. Long thread here:
