i getr your original intent, and honestly i dont see much of an issue with it. for example should anyone who posts tmobile wifi calling get it removed on the g2/dz forums?
but... i dont think this is the way to do it, if your that determined on not ever coming back here why not just delete the cookies and never come back? why make sure a show of it?

The software you posted is only available to Sprint customers. You were distributing it to everyone.
What you were doing is illegal, and could potentially get XDA a nice big C&D from Sprint or Telenav.

You're leaving? Alright. Go on, then. Get.

I think some might need to be careful before they point their finger. This forum is full of programs that came from a company. Many of them have been pulled apart and decompiled and changed then put back into installable form. Do you think they got permission to do that? You don't think things like modded hulu and htc ime keyboard and modded and themed multi touch Droid x keyboards that can be installed on almost any phone is wrong? It's okay if they do that but it's not okay if I put a link to a piece of software that came off of a sprint phone? I call that being hypocritical. Pot calling the kettle black.
It's okay to post a rom that has the app in it but it's not okay to post the app.

Bye
Uncle Jimmy says hello

I'm going to have to agree with everything you've said. Everyday people promote wifi tether which is abusing a service the carriers are trying to force payment to use...how is that any different? Leaked software is distributed, Netflix was hacked to work on various phones, etc. The list goes on.

Android phone apps share personal data

Here you go, boys and girls:

Which is used for location based advertising.... When you hit accept you agree to what the app does and uses. If you don't like what it uses don't accept it. Your own bank shares your personal data. Privacy has not existed in the US since the late 50s.

I agree...the market won't let you download the app unless you accept what the app has access to. Don't like it? Don't install it!
Also, these surveys only look at those "access to" lists and don't actually go into whether or not they actually use the data...

I've got a buddy that worked at Verizon and he said one of the biggest problems they had were that firewalls, or privacy apps will eventually destroy your phone. He said they got tons of phones brought in that just didnt work anymore, and they all had one thing in common... firewalls/privacy apps.
Anyone else heard anything about this?
Hopefully if they really do cause problems they wont be backed into our ROMs.
Already removed said apps listed on Engadget.
bad apps
Ive heard about people blaming Android for these apps.. its like blaming Microsoft for malware that people download.
Someone even said that they were thankful that Apple screens everything for them.. 1. they dont 2. thats why the iPhone isnt a real smartphone.. it is more like a Wii Phone than a computer phone.

Ummm does this worry anyone else?

I've been up late tonight, and just so happened to stumble across this article over at AndroidPolice. Figured it might interest some people here since it includes our phone.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...e-numbers-gps-sms-emails-addresses-much-more/
Here's the thing, though. They recommend uninstalling the offending apk immediately, which I tried.....Unfortunately that gives me repeated force closes over and over and over while the system tries to run it, to the point where I had to restore to a backup. So what do we do about this?
UPDATE: You can remove HTCloggers.apk...all you have to do is restart afterwards.

Yes and no.
Yes because so many users run Sense.
No because I run AOSP.
Frankly, I wonder how many other serious flaws there are.
I can name several apps that want their hands on permissions they have no business in [Facebook for one]
Its like 1984 for sure. There's an article in the new section here at xda that talks about some of the other vulnerabilities as well.

Many devs remove these programs and such to remove ciq. I can't find the thread right now, but it reads just about everything. It's so deeply imbedded into the framework.
It reads every button you press on your keyboard.
Every text you send and receive.
Every app you use and download.
The pages you browse on using the internet browser.
It even goes as far to read any spot on your screen that you touch.
This is spyware to the extreme. Sprint and HTC will say its not "spyware" and say its used only for marketing to determine how phones are being used to further develop for the current trends in smartphones. It's very possible they could steal personal info with this. Is it currently happening? Uhh...probably not, but there will still be a lot of paranoia about it.

Some of us haven't forgotten the XCP rootkit that was on some Sony BMG titles in 2005... hope HTC doesnt suffer a similar demise like Sony eventually has of late.
This has been removed from MikG.
This is exactly why I'm AOSP. (that and sub-100MB ROM files)
I read the article too- (I have an Androidpolice/Android Central) feed in my Pulse reader....
I already knew CIQ and such were slimy embedded spyware...but the Treve app- spotted stuff I hadnt deleted already... Sprint sent me a "letter" about bandwidth usage and We-KNOW-what-Your-Doing" ----
I'm not amused by HTC/Sprint's collusion... leaving our bottoms out there in the cold for anyone to do whatever with.....
I bet even money my phones been cloned... sometimes I can't use it for calls .. recently -and I'd not had a single missed call or problem in a year.
I'm not a happy camper.. worried about my credit card #'s and really really am annoyed by HTC sliming us this way...
to the tune- that it'll be an icey cold day in hell before I'd consider buying another HTC phone for anyone in my family- (my family has 3 Evo 4g)...
We are not amused.....

AMEN
it appears to me that this file has already been removed from MikFroyo. At least, I can't find it...
BTW, you can just remove it using TIbackup, but you'll have to restart to get rid of the repeated force closes. Simple fix, and I've done the same for CarrierIQ as well.
It was removed from sprint lovers rom as well... I couldnt find it at least
I removed HtcLoggers.apk from mine and after rebooting (force close loop) it seems to be working fine. However, is there an old log file still on the phone that can be read by some Spyware app that needs to be removed or does all this data need to come from the logger app itself? If there still is a log, I'm sure it has enough info to still steal my ESN and other stuff.
Wow! Glad I run custom ROMS

What about a "media player" ROM?

Along with many others, I am moving on from my still perfectly usable EVO. I have a daughter who wants an ipod touch and I was thinking of converting the EVO. Since she wants the ipod, I was thinking of MIUI with the phone components stripped out. I don't have the skill to hide everything (nor the time to learn). But, I would think basics could be done by most of us...unless there is someone with that skill, and more interest than just me in this becoming a ROM.
ROM or not ("not" meaning a one off that I do for my use), the EVO will be a more than suitable mobile media/game machine as it's been for me since launch day. Anyone else done this?
MIUI I would think. Use Root Explorer to rip our the phone stuff and other .apk you don't want. Leave in Market and maybe Amazon Appstore so she can get games and music

Exactly. If the phone is taken off the account it wont work a phone anymore since Sprint towers won't allow it to make or receive phone calls so it could be considered a mini tablet at that point (powerful mini tablet tho). If your daughter needs to make purchases she can use the wifi radio to connect to the internet.
The other option is to disable the radio... there is an app on the market called network that will allow you to control if you want the CDMA radio to work... you could install the app, disable the radio and then remove the app. This way IF you ever need a spare phone you can revert the process and have the CDMA radio back online.
As far as removing the phone apks... I have seen many threads that indicate that doing such thing might be a bad idea since most seem to bootloop when they are removed. It make sense that it does, after all the EVO is a phone.

This. I once accidentally deleted the phone apk with root explorer and everything went to hell. Had to pull the battery and do a nand restore. Although, I'm sure if you had a ROM that was designed to operate without a phone apk, it would work just fine. Tablets don't have them.

MIUI is perfect for this.
I don't think I will even have to "remove" core parts (wasn't concerned since I have a nandroid of synergy from last night), just hide them. I would have liked using this before, but the 4G was a killer for me...until now.

Carrier IQ

All right the company Carrier IQ is suddenly popping up in news stories everywhere. I assume I am safe from this garbage if I am using Cyanogenmod but how do I make sure my Wife's shift is clean of this if she's using Stock rooted 2.2? She will not let me change roms or even upgrade her to 2.3 so I would like to know what I need to delete to make sure Carrier IQ is not installed on her Shift or at least not sending any info back to it's mother ship.
If you haven't heard Carrier IQ is installed on millions of phones of different manufacturer's and is supported by many carriers including HTC and Sprint. It collects data and sends it back to Sprint or who knows who. Apparently it can log everything and it ignores any permissions or security you have set up or something like that. It is installed "invisibly" and you do not have the option to opt in or out. I assume Titanium or some other program can see the pieces I would need to delete but I don't know what they are.
Here's where I read about it and it does list an app that may be able to take care of it but I would rather know how to do it manually:

I think he already mentioned that yes she does have root on stock if you read the OP. So yes titanium backup should be able to remove it no problem. Use the app carrier IQ detector to find out how much of it needs to be removed.
CIQ is built into the kernel too. He needs to swap kernels as well as remove the apps.

I looked at the kernel. All there is in the kernel is bug fixes to allow CIQ to run properly. If you remove the system apps there is nothing for the bug fixes in the kernel to use.

or removed the the ciq stuff manually with success? if so is there anything that needs to stay on the device so it doesn't brick.
i'm using a stock rooted rom and kind of want to stick with it.

SE Android

I just read today about the new SE Android put together by the NSA and was curious to know a little more about it, it sounds like an interesting project.
First I was wondering if any developers plan to put together ROMs for our phone using this and second, what would be the benefit, if any, for us using SE Android? Near as I can tell this is best for people that just want to click and download apps from the market without ever really finding out what they do, what info they access, etc... If that is truly the only benefit here then it seems like it's not really that interesting of a topic.
Any feedback from devs (or non-devs) would be appreciated, I am very curious.

Sorry about not previously providing links. I just figured that devs would be more in the know than I and would have already heard if something was out there.
edit: looks like it's not actually a ROM for the thunderbolt yet, just talk of someone developing it at this point.

I'd be skeptical of anything from the NSA. It could make their job of "intercepting", 100% easier. That's not coming anywhere near anything I own.

indeed. NSA. I uninstalled it, and got probs with sending sms, They simply don't send after uninstalling that seandroid app. There's that everending waving blue circle pointer. However, uninstalling got me rid of the grey triangle notification message called 'Detect information'.
anyone seen this message too ? What did you do to get rid of it ? OR what did you do to get rid of the app from NSA ?

What on earth are you talking about. I don't see the OP mentioning in his post that he's using CM7 official. For sure I am not.
