*UPDATE* HTC has announnced that they will bring GB to the Desire after all... Whew!
Engadget Article
So according to the article above, the Desire (a phone with the same guts as ours) supposedly can't handle a Gingerbread release across the pond there. HTC already promised the update but they kinda backed out on all that.
Bear in mind that HTC isn't like everyone here at XDA obviously, because the phone from the factory has to work faster, all the time, every time when they push out an update... it's not just a ROM that "runs good" but can't do MMS, mount to PC, play Netflix, etc. The average person just wants their phone to do its thing daily and run, nothing more.
That being said, we aren't average people! We as Smartphone enthusiasts actually care about our Android updates, where the average person has no idea what Frozen Yogurt has to do with their Smartphone. So yeah, I personally think that while it is a sensible business move to not have GB running on the Desire (so the customer will upgrade to a new phone) it's a load of crap that the phone is out of the game as far as consumers go. It's like dude. At least hook the phone up with the 9 month old version of Android.
What do ya'll think about this? Do you think that if we get our update, Desire owners will be up in arms since they basically have the same phone? Do you think HTC is gonna come to us next saying "Oh, the Incredible that runs on VERIZON and that bloatware? Fuggedaboudit"?

Weird desire and incredible have the exact same specs in a different enclosure
Is the internal storage the exact same? I know the incredible has an obscene amount compared to most android phones... Apparently that's what's causing the issue.
Either that or they're being lazy and are making up excuses.

It's called money. You want gingerbread on the desire? Upgrade to a new phone. At least that's what they want us to believe.
umm doesnt this mean they may back out of the incredible too?
And does anyone know if the desire has ddr ram in it? If no that is another upgrade the incredible has over it 512 MB DDR ram and 1 GB ROM (748 MB free to user) plus 8 GB moviNAND vs Memory 576 MB RAM and 512 MB flash (150 MB user accessible)

Wrong. It has nothing to do with "money". The Evo got the Gingerbread update, and if I'm not mistaken, the Desire HD did as well.

Will Android 2.3 be announced for the HTC Legend?
So. I ask the question and got the answer

Yes, from time to time the software is being updated, and it will continue in the future. Unfortunetely now we can not say exact date of next update.

I'm willing to bet it won't happen. Why would HTC release a brand new iteration of the Android OS on older hardware? They've got very little to gain from doing so.
I used to think that it'll never happen, but with the announcement of the HTC Salsa, the facebook phone with the same specs of the Legend but with android 2.3 inside, now I hope that HTC make arrangements to adapt that version of HTC sense to the legends, maybe without the facebook things
That is my only hope against a company that make new phones so often. U.u

I hope you know same "specs" in marketing materials probably means the hardware is way different and that someone would actually have to write drivers for 2.3 and Legend hardware...not gonna happen IMHO, not by hands of HTC anyway...

If I can overlook it, so can you.
For the record, it should be this:
Will Android 2.3 be announced for the HTC Legend?
Just imagine Yoda's voice when you read the original phrasing, and it's all good.
On topic: Looking forward to official 2.3 tomorrow!
Not even Yoda would say it like that
TGF: You're right about the title, what I meant was: "No, you're crazy?" Which for the record should be: "No, are you crazy?"
But don't mind me, I just felt in the mood
I think there will not be an 2.3 update
but i hope it will be
so. the only difference between newer HTC phones in the class the same like a Legend - it's ONLY RAM. Thats all.
Next point. Dev's guys from Google sais that the phone with official working (announced) of Android 2.2 phone FULLY will support Android 2.3, coz there is no hardware requirements MORE than in the FroYo. So...i feel this smell.. you no? We have all possibility for this... We can get it.
Why not? Maybe this process will be in a few times more than for Desire-like phones (1st gen.) But it CAN be. I'm a mistaken? Where?

I'd love to have it, with the recent reports showing the horsepower that it have coupled with Sense 3.0 that would be the perfect phone to have
If people want the HTC Sense experience then they should look at a HTC Phone. Although a Port is possible, its very time consuming and by the time someone actually port's it over with all the drivers working, your device will be close to the yearly refresh and you will want the next best thing. This will leave the developer in a limbo where his efforts didnt truly pay off.

It's not possible, Galaxy S is half baked, Nexus S also try, half baked. Samsung uses totally different structure on android Nexus S can't even port TouchWiz and its the same manufacturer. I would love to get S II spec wise it blows the Sensation out.

Id say its all about taste. Personally I think motorola's UI is the worst, followed closely by the apple wannabe touchwiz. Funny, I actually hated sense as well at first, but now that im using it for a while, I LOVE IT.
Also, its because htc has added soooo much functionality, like finding/wiping/ringing from anywhere(laptop) incase its lost, or stolen, etc. Plus auto-backup of messages, apprx 100 very useful widgets, plus may apps wich save you a lot of time if you had to download one by one. Basically, its a complete package that looks good and offers functionality that no other manufacturer can even come close to, especially being built in from start. no headaches. I myself wish it could be ported but I doubt, especially with how "involved" its gotten lately

I had a Galaxy S, then Atrix and now Inspire. Next I'm buying Galaxy S II because the bootlogger is unlocked and I want the light weight, dual core processor power and video enhancements.
The Inspire is amazing. I like it far better than the Atrix because I can put custom roms on it. I was able to root the Atrix and do a few modifications but it was very limited. I strongly recommend the Inspire.
The Sensation is locked down as is the Atrix. If you want a good out of the box phone Atrix is as good as you get until the Galaxy S II arrives. Sensation will be great but probably about the same as the Galaxy S II.
It is hard to recommend a phone without knowing what you do with your phone. For me the unlocked boot logger is the difference between buying and not buying.
Personally I prefer Sense.I think that Samsung have basically copied the iPhone in design and UI. If someone could remove the native Samsung bloat and add sense, all would be good in the world(for me at least)

Sent from my RafDroidHD using Tapatalk
I think we can. If enough people that have bought a SGS2 ask for sense then I am sure someone(developer) will be willing to design it for SGS2. From what I have seen of custom roms so far, I think that there are some more than capable developers out there that could do it. If I could write code I definitely would(perhaps I should start learning. The only question is can an old dog(me) learn new tricks?????)
Well, now that most of us have FroYo, I thought that we might be lacking something to WILDLY speculate about... sooooo GINGERBREAD ANYONE!?
Some of our friends in Europe already have gingerbread on their Galaxy S's, so the question is, when do we get ours?
Now I know that it took us over six months to get FroYo, but that was due to some sort of disagreement with Verizon and Samsung (most likely over Bing). However, since we now have 2.2, I would *assume* that they have gotten past that and that any future updates we get will most likely come in a more timely fashion.
If things go accordingly, and Samsung and Verizon play nice, then I would assume that we would be getting gingerbread around September or October (based on how long it took FroYo to be distributed to other carriers).
What do you guys think?
P.S. I'll post any major updates that appear in the media.

OP: I think the gingerbread update is going to take even longer than froyo because the gx2 and the charge are going to be out. Samsung is most likely going to update those before they even think about us.
Unfortunately, the truth is: we don't know when the heck Gingerbread is coming for the Fascinate. And with Samsung's somewhat random updates, its really hard to guess even a general date.
If we can get CM7 and maybe officially supported by CM. who cares about stock GB. If JT and PK's work becomes bug free, and it looks like they have done great job, I think we might see gold.

Completely untrue. The droid name means nothing. Carrier and manufacturer are the same. Hardware is the exact same as a the fascinate other than the fact that it has a 4g radio. How much do you want to bet the Droid Charge will see Gingerbread and more minor updates than the Fascinate just because it's in the Droid lineup? Both phones are nearly identical when it comes to software. Nearly every phone in the Droid lineup has had great support(except for the Eris and maybe the Pro).
I honestly don't think the fascinate will ever see gingerbread in any sort of official way.

This is an article (via. AndroidGuys) that states the Incredible S and Desire HD are getting their updates to sense 3.0 officially.
Now, I know this isn't our phones specifically, but could this be a sign of HTC stepping up?
The Desire HD, as far as I know, has the same processor as the Shift but has 768 MB of RAM instead of the shifts 512 MB.
Maybe this is just wishful thinking but maybe we might see an official sense upgrade sometime early next year.
I know that we will get ICS, and we have sense 3.0 anyway because of the amazing development on XDA, but it IS always nice to have an official update.
What do you think?
That would be awesome to get either one cause with an official update that means more development for our shift and the expect life of the shift will keep me over for well over another year
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Nah, I highly doubt an official sense 3 upgrade. Amanda the cpu's aren't the same, Im pretty sure its the same as the g2. And the extra 256mbs of ram does make a bit of a difference. Sense 3 on my dhd was a lot faster then on my g2 both @1.5ghz. And as for official ics, maybe. It has the specs to run it well enough for an official.
