My iPhone headphones do not work in the play. When I use my Play headphones in my desktop radio it is very quiet and I have to put the volume way up.
I have an Ipad that I use every day and don't want to carry two sets of headphones.
that is abit strange mate,
would of thought they would work as there are the same audio jack socket
you could buy a bluetooth adaptor that way you can connect via bluetooth
to both devices without the need to carry two headphone around plus u dont get wires everywhere when u gotta plug them in
I was thinking about that.
I was also thinking about getting BT headphones from eBay.
It is strange.
all sony phones have had this setup, the wiring of the mini jack socket is swapped around in some way or another so only sony made headphones will function fully. sony are well known for this type of thing they love to make it so you have to use their products with their products. annoying but i dont think there is going to be an easy solution as no software can emulate the wiring in question to change it to work with normally wired headphones
hope this helps

I think it is probably more to do with the headphones, or the OP's handset, because my SkullCandy headphones work fine in the Play and anything else i plug them in to. Also, before i got them I used the SE headphones and they worked on the phone and my computer.

Handsfree headsets have a slightly different plug from normal headphones. When using your Play headset with your desktop radio, pull the plug out just a bit and you'll hear everything normally without resorting to cranking the volume way up. This also happened with my Nokia handsfree, so I assume it's related to the mic.
As for why your iPhone headphones don't work on your Play, that's strange since most headphones i've tried with my Play work Flawlessly, from cheap $2 Knockoffs to some more expensive gear, even the Nokia handsfree I mentioned before works great with the Play.
My play from verizon came with a little cable that converts their sony configuration to the standard jack. I don't need it as i use BT handsfree.
I just tried another generic set of headphones and put a video from youtube on. I open youtube the sound goes through the phone speakers and not the headphones. This doesn't change if I unplug and plug them back in with the video going either. My Sony headset only works with music. The youtube has no sound at all. I wonder what is going on. I'm going to have to call Sony.
Thanks for the half plugged in trick works great I don't have to carry two pairs of headphones now that my Sony ones work in my laptop!

I tried the Sony headphones in my Advent Vega and, indeed, if they're wholly plugged the sound is weird, metallic. Half-plugged, they worked fine.

@duramajin you'll have to be careful in a quite place because turn of the head could pull them out and sound would be coming out of laptop speakers.... I've just resorted to BT headphones.... SE HBH-IS800 are quality and really small.

No issues here. My portable speakers, my headphones I use on my ipod, everything works in my play. It's just a standard jack.

I'm curious to know if sound will be passed to the HTC USB aswell as the 3.5" jack ?
I use the E100 adapter all the time as its nice and simple to skip a track and make/answer a call when out and about.
Dont fancy pulling out the HD to skip a track or answer a call all the time

**Bump**
Nobody has any idea ?
I don't the answer to your question, but the answer to your problem is bluetooth. My headphones change volume, track, play/pause and answer the phone. Music resumes after the call. This is using Motorola S805 headphones, WM6 and Mortplayer.
Sound is via jack only, but indeed Bluetooth is a great solution.
Cheers for your replies....

Doesn't the mini USB port need to support sound in order for a wired hands-free headset to work? I'd be really surprised if they a) required a bluetooth headset for hands-free or b) required two jacks (3.5mm and miniUSB) in order to use wired hands-free headset.
If the 3.5 jack has more contacts than just the normal stereo then maybe they have a wired headset that works just from the 3.5mm. It will be interesting to see how they've done it.
It is confusing to me, since the few previewers reported a dedicated audio jack and USB only for charging/data (ActiveSync). HTC in their 16/9 press release do mention the audio jack in the press release, but in the feature list it is not quoted, but there is mention of ExtUSB, but no mention of audio on it. On other HTC press releases for previous models ExtUSB is usually mentioned with audio next to it. Well I guess it is wait and see
Update: This French review in English also says audio jack also for handsfree http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aiw5PsQ50Uc
Check the review on GSMArena - the headset works off the audio jack, so no need to have audio via ExtUSB...
Mmm The Earphones supplied are 4 pole, Earth, Mic, Left and Right.
So disapointed if the Ext USB doest carry sound too... Will make the whole Car mount job look untidy but worst is that you will have to take your HD out of your pocket to skip tracks when using the headset... Sorry thats just pants !!!

Re in car intergration and control, I like this gadget very much.
http://us.kensington.com/html/14484.html
LiquidAUX™ Bluetooth® Car Kit
It comes with a separate wireless remote control that you can mount anywhere in your car, and the sound outputs via 3.5mm jack, so you can connect it easily to your stereo. In addition it auto-connects very well, meaning its really plug and play. It also comes with a separate USB port for charging, meaning you can still charge your phone via USB while this occupies the cigarette lighter.
Surur
Sorry to bring this back up but are we totally sure that the mini usb doesn't carry audio? I haven't been able to get it to work on my car hands free kit but maybe i'm missing something??
If it doesn't i think HTC have misssed a trick.

I just got my Galaxy S and tried to use my Monster Beats headset with it (as I used it with my iPhone)
The button for answering calls / change song doesn't seem to work. Anyone have used the Monster headset in combination with a android handset before?
Probably a matter of polarity difference. You would get same results if you attempted to use Samsung headset shipped with the Galaxy S on the iPhone.
Galaxy S and Monster Studio
The call volume is really low on the Studios - media seems to work fine. Anyone else with a similar issue?
probably a proprietary connection for the 4 pole 3.5mm jack.
yes, the iphone and SGS headset is not interchangeable.. indeed a difference how they were implemented.
Just like how the data cable for mobile phones are.. they are not standard mini USB jacks.. if only all of them uses mini USB.. would be easier to manage cables.

i am using my westone um1 with sgs. music listening is perfect. but i can't answer call with it. by that i mean i can't hear voice with the headphone i have to unplug it to talk. with all my old phone i just use the headphone for listening and talk on the mic on the phone. somehow it doesn't work for the sgs,
I got problems with my 'Monster Diddy Beats w/control talk'
Did you find a fix? Are you able to play music with them? I'm not
The answer call button doesn't work, but I'm not even able to play music. The sound is totally twisted and it's allmost impossible to hear the vocal. The headset work on every other device I've tried, and regular headphones works on the Galaxy S (like noname earplugs, monster lady gaga, and iphone plugs).
When I connect threw and 3,5mm 1->2 output adapter it works. Seems like the plug doesn't fit into my phone.
The plug has 3 rubber (?) rings around it. Other plugs I've tried have to. Might that be the problem and is there any solution? All the plugs got the same length..

Same thing here. Somebody who knows a way to fix this? Does it work with custom rooms?
i think the mic and ground are reversed with samsung.
with the iphone 4pole, t/r/r/s(tip,ring,ring,sleeve) is left, right ground, mic
with samsung i think it is t/r/r/s left, right mic, ground, alhough im not so sure as i have yet to receive my phone from the local carrier
one thing to test is to listen to music with the iphone compatible headset, there should be some problem with the sound. then press the mic button. If the sound cleared up like there is a perfect closed circuit, then the mic and ground terminals are reversed. you can diy an adaptor for your headset with the proper termination
Thanks.

You're probably right. Can't really understand why though
When I press and hold the 'answer call button' on the diddy beats the music sounds like it's supposed to. The Diddy Beats are brand new and I love them. If I'm not able to fix this I have to sell either them or the phone (they are in my opinion the best highend earplugs on the market)
Is there any DIY guides I could use or even better a kind of adapter or so I could buy?
Still think it's quite weird that the sound goes through the phone speaker instead of earplugs while making calls. Should be a way change this.

well, firstly, i have the triplefi10vi which i used on my iphone, and they trump the beats by a mile sq-wise. and then i sent them to china to get remolded into custom monitors with an additional mid-range driver, making 4 in total driver count per ear, 1 up from 3 drivers per ear. they are now comparable to high-end musicians stage in ear monitors, if not better
about diy adaptor, just get one o those generic after market 4pole headphone adaptors, open them up and switch the mic and ground connectors on the plug side so they have the correct polarity when they terminate into the galaxy s but still have the same polarity on the socket side where you plug your headphones into.
about why the call goes to the speaker, maybe because the phone doesnt recognize the headphones as a proper earphone/mic set due to the reversed polarity of the mic/ground
hope that helps
I'll give the diy solution a try, hope for the best.

No phonecalls with ordinary headphones
I use a couple of high end headphones with my galaxy s and suffer from the stupid inability to send the phonecall audio through the phones. What about older samsung cell phones with 3.5 jacks. Can they do it? Will samsung ever fix this desigh flaw, or should I get rid of the phone...

Hi, first of all, I did this thread here because I'm not quite asking about the accessories, but about a modification. But if any Moderator thinks this should be moved, please do so.
At any rate, the thing is, I'm still beaten up about the fact that the headphones bundled to the cellphone are such low quality. Ok, there are some superb phones that comes with crappy headset, but you can replace them with any other headphones you have. But this one doesn't support detaching them. That's low quality for me.
So, I went to search for detachable HTC headsets. To my wonder - or bad searching skills - I found none. All are just one-piece headset. Really?
Ok, maybe makes sense when we take into account the fact that for an odd reason, HTC headsets works different than the rest. Just incompatible with other phones.
And here is my question. Is it possible to mod this headphones? My idea is to just trim the original bundled and re-wire the plug to some kind of 4 bands 3,5 female plug, so I can connect non HTC heaphones with mic to this sort of adapter and that could operate the phone.
Or, maybe there's such adapter out there in the world? theory says I'm not the first one to think in this, but I've found nothing so far.
In resume:
a) Are there detachable HTC headsets out there?
b) Is it possible to make an adapter for non HTC headsets?
c) Does this adapter exits already and I'm just wasting time and not money?
bonus) Is there some sort of schematics about HTC headsets? I just can't guess why others are incompatible, but a different wiring...
Many thanks before hand!
.
Really? no one? :/ I cant believe everyone is just satisfied using that lousy headset or just headphones with no mic.
why bother. Any set of decent cell phone headphones work great.

Don't use headphones here, I have bluetooth in my car .
But, I'd suggest buying skull candy headphones, or even the headphones that come with some nokia xpressmusic phones are awesome. (particularly 5800).
i use these skullcandies because i mainly listen to music on my phone they have a mic on them to so i kan use the on a call if i get one while i have them on

Hey people. Thanks for all info, been reading about the defy here for some time. Got one now and I love it. I had a few smartphones before and this is by far the one I would stick to forever if I had to.
So, my question is: Are there any good head phones (in-ear plugs, with mic and maybe even music controlers) avaliable, and that I can be certain to be compatible with the Defy? Or could I just buy any that works fine with other Android or Motorola devices? Motorola is not sold in Sweden where I live, so it's not like I can check out any stores IRL here...
With my Xperia x20 mini, exacly what I described came along with the phone. Too bad that you just got these normal plugs with the defy. Cos there is just no way I would use those. As of now I stick to my old head phones but I'd love the mic function with my In-ear plugs.
Thanks for any help!

Ok, so I found this site:
thinkmotoroladefy.com/wiredheadsets.html
and it's all looking good, except for the part that they are a bit low-priced. I'm looking for high quality ones. I.e my current head phones was about 90 USD.
For information, iphone handsfree works fine
Thanks!
By chance, does anyone know if "Klipsch Image S4i" would work? they seams to be perfect! Volume, track fwd bwd and play...
I got one of these a few months ago, works fine with my HTC Desire. Not the best headphones in the world, but more than capable of handling a bus ride. You can unplug the headphones, clip on a small plastic hook and use it as an in-ear Bluetooth headset too. Two birds with one stone
I can get around 10 hours out of them between charges.
Thanks, it seams to be mono, right? Mono doesnt sound too thrilling...
If you use power amp you can set it up to use the controls on headphones to start and stop music, instead of calling the last number you called. It will work on the lock screen too.
This was the only way of getting it to work i found for the defy and i tried about 10 different headphones with in-line controls. Bluetooth stereo sets like the one above with controls seem to work fine for music however, ive got a sony bluetooth set and the controls worked right away on the standard media player.

That's because the 3 way audio jack is meant for apple products, I had this problem before until I realised that you had to hold down the mic button. If you want these to work you can buy adapters on ebay on the cheap.
i have the same problem after installing cm 7.1 - earphones works with any other device, but not with my sgs. holding down mic button doesn't work. I tried to use adaptors added to my urbanears headset (dedicated for nokia / other devices) - still the same issue.
well isnt there any way the Service mode can alter to balance the speakers?I have used voodoo with great results in normal earphones 2way-jack,but on the 3way it becomes a little loud but not as the other speaker!Abput the adaptors i have noticed people who worked for them and people who didnt. What adapter is the most <trustworthy>?
If you are using headset (earphone+mic+remote) for Apple or HTC, get a 3.5mm male to female TRRS adapter.
This will solve your problem.
No i am using the original samsung headset and another headset to check if the samys if faulty!i am fooling around inside service mode but cant find anything. How do i revert any changes back to stock in the Service mode?
anyone get to the bottom of this - driving me mad !
original headset - v low volume - increases when you push mic button
very weird
Original Sammy-made headphones (3 way) work fine on sgs. I had problem like this because I was simply not plugging 'em down and now headphones work normally. Since 3-way female 3.5mm is unified for all devices, you have to try to blow out all dust out of the phone 'cuz audio port isn't covered like usb or this plug in as far as possible.
I am also facing same sort of problem, most of the headphones don't work during call but do work on music
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
I have tried everything - phones are definitely pushed in properly - port is clean , as asrafw says phone volume on headset is fine for music - just rubbish for calls . Asra does your mic key on headset being held increase volume ?
I have found the opposite - do not push them all the way down then they work fine !
Headphones
You have to buy an iPhone-Nokia adapter, or switch the ground and data pins on any other headphone, which is designed iPhone-style.
To verify that the headset is that kind, if you press the middle button, then you should hear the music clearly.
Or buy headphones made for Nokia or Sony (Ericsson) products.
Even Samsung have changed to the new style with Galaxy Tab, so no proof that if it works with newer Samsung products, then it will work with our phones.
Have you tried a neutral stereo adapter. I got one with my UrbanEars headphones and they work well with it attached.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Yes, the middle button (mic) does improve volume - so what you are saying is that these headsets never worked properly ever !
Do you have a photo of the adapters you 2 are using - just want to make sure I get it right ,
cheers
This is a pic of my cable. I noticed last night that the headphone plug itself is a little different than the neutral stereo plug in that the neutral plug on has two coloured bands whereas the headphone plug has 3. This must be the difference between I pods and earlier androids.
