Hi
Just Got my SGS2 on vodafone at last after deciding between the SGS2, Sensation, optimus 2x and the N8 ( yeah N8 cause of the camera)
So here goes
Got it on the 12 month contract 600mins with 500mb internet at £41 / month and £130 for phone (gets the 2gb wifi bt openzone or whatever it says).. just for info as I hate 18/24 months contacts
The purpose of the post is for Uk vodafone users only so as to help each other with our operator specific problems and tricks only
Some stuff I found interesting floating around these threads I'd like to share for NEWbs
VODAFONE DOES SIM UNLOCKED PHONES ?
Can other vodafone users confirm this? as mine is sim unlocked although its got the vodafone stuff I can pop any sim in it which I think is neat since I bought it from a vodafone shop.
VODAFONE SIGNAL IMPROVEMENT (WIFI + GSM)
Type *#*#9900#*#* and disable fast dormancy
I found this to increase my data on wifi speed from 5 mb to 15mb
and network speed from 3 mb to 5 mb at home
still have to check at work where the signal is ****ty will get back on that one.
Screen Shot ( Old Trick )
half depress the home button and press the power button slightly.. timing is important. need a few tries to get it going
VIDEO CALL ON THE SGS2
Right Skype has no video calling yet for SGS2, except between two SGS2 users with the built in video call feature - if someone can confirm this please
Fring - I have tested this and the video call works perfectly called an Iphone user using fring and it was goody
there is another app that seems to video call as well cant get the name yet.
VOICE TALK ---
Just by accident I noticed double tapping the home button brings up this function, maybe most people might know it , still for newbs would be great I guess
TASK MANAGER -
Long Press the Home Screen to bring up the task manager > and you can exit all running applications which I do if I want be using the phone or a while and also clear the ram a bit as well.
GOOGLE EASTER EGG -
Maybe an easter egg you didn't know about(it's from Google), if you go to preferences and about phone and click three times on Android Version you get an art.
I have a Zombie attack Art... do you guys have something different
Anything else I will be happy to post as I go along
Just a Post if you want to upgrade your firmware to other than the stock vodafone or even the 2.3.4
Updating to 2.3.4 firmware - if you don't want to root
Probably the best advice would be for people to read the stickied threads.

I am on VF Spain, and I didn't get anything to come up
So what tips are there for vodafone users ??????
Phones from vodafone uk on contract are sim-unlocked from my experience, but off contract phones may be different. Not like it matters, which because the dev forum has a SGS2 unlocker made by chainfire iirc.
As for fast dormancy, vodafone uk supports fast dormancy, so turning it off will drain your battery substantially faster.
Also, if you look around on xda, there's already a hacked skype which supports the SGS2. It even adds extra settings you can change like camera orientation or resolution.

This is a dangerous generalisation and does not tally with my experience.
I find that turning fast dormancy on or off makes little obvious difference. I keep it off on a hunch that the battery lasts slightly longer. I can get two days with moderate usage, normally.
I suspect that the best advice is to make Vodafone users aware of the option and suggest they try both modes to see which delivers best all round results.

Thanks for this, though honestly I haven't really noticed much difference having it disabled or not.
cant say i have had any battery issues when turning this off... has definately improved wifi tho
FYI... Heres a quote from a moderator on the vodafone uk forums
"There is a current project to update the software on the RNCs to support uprated HSPA speeds and Fast Dormancy, so some areas will have it enabled and others not yet.
There does appear to be an issue with the Samsung Galaxy S2 which doesn’t deal with Fast Dormancy very well. Users find the battery life increases massively if they disable fast dormancy using *#9900# "
(on my rooted phone I have to use *#*#9900#*#* )
Here's the link to the forum thread.

I just got my Galaxy S about a week ago and I was very disappointed to see it didn't have Swype installed. I also noticed it was missing the SocialHub app which, doesn't really break my heart but was more of a "Huh..." moment. I do know the Korean version is slightly different since it includes the DMB Antenna for TV and whatnot but I was curious if anyone else knew about this and if there's a way I can get Swype on my phone. I'd also like to flash some new firmware on here because my Galaxy S is lagging quite a bit and at times is completely unresponsive in which I have to either attempt to power off or just remove the battery. I am using a task killer but I think it's more than just killing a few apps to solve my problems. It really doesn't seem to be nearly as snappy as I've seen in several videos. Hope someone can answer some of my concerns. Thanks!
Not sure if you tried this.
Try long press the text input field until the "input method" dialog box appears. Swype should be selectable from the box.
As for it being unresponsive, before trying to flash the new firmware, try to find a program call 'Advance task killer" and have it automatically kills useless tasks that continues to run in the background.
Other than that, if you are still unhappy, then flash away!

And if it does not appear for selection, go into setting, locale and see if Swype is there but unticked. If unticked, you should tick it before it can be eligible for selection.
Being laggy is a serious issue affecting all models, it seems. I'm too very disappointed with that, but I'm waiting for Froyo to come around to fix it.
I suggest you to flash JG3 or JG5 firmware. My SSGS seems faster than the original firmware after flashing. However, you should use Titanium backup to backup some Korean app that you like.
This European firmware has Swype kb, I can guarantee.

Hey tra, thanks for this.
Which one do you use? Do you have a direct link to it? What if you want to restore back to way it look (including the Telco customization) before handing in for servicing and warranty? Any idea how to back up your firmware first?

That's a fine way to brick the phone.
22.Can I flash an Asian ROM on my European device or vice versa?
Flashing should work without any problems. There are no known compatibility issues as of now. If any should arise, flashing back to Asian firmware is always possible.
Check your current ROM by dialing *#1234* to make sure you do not have a Korean variant of the phone (which is NOT compatible!).

@eaglesteve & @kcharng
I tried and checked both suggestions when I first got the phone because I really wanted to try Swype but didn't see the option. Only Samsung Keyboard existed. Now I have that and Swiftkey Beta since I installed it.
@kcharng
I do have Advance task killer installed and have been using it at times but for the most part it's pretty laggy. There's also the ever occuring GPS issue as well and I've had the camera mode sort of lock itself on my phone so I can't press the home button to exit. I'm hoping there's a Korean firmware that I can flash to fix it all or that Froyo will be my Godsend.
Thanks everyone for the helpful and kind replies btw. I was afraid I'd get flamed, call it first post jitters.

I also have the Korean Galaxy S. I had my Korean friend call up Samsung Service to deal with some of my issues. They didn't include Swype because of the double consonants in the Hangul, seems dumb that they didn't have an English only option. I've tried to use the apk from the I9000 but it just FC on me. The stock keyboard, really, really sucks on the Korean version, but right now I'm using Swiftkey which is really great for prediction but kind of frustrating otherwise. I've heard the Droid X has a great keyboard, so I'll try that soon.
I personally only manually kill apps with ATK, I don't let it background. At times I get laggy, but overall I find the device very responsive. FYI, if you didn't know they've put out two firmware updates already for the Korean version, connect to Kies if you haven't already.
Please reply or PM me if you have any questions. I wouldn't change the firmware, Korean version isn't easy to get international support for and also we will be the first to get Froyo, no reason to delay that! Also, I've noticed other features missing, like text-to-speech isn't as universal in our version.
Also you can try to root your phone.it is worth it just to run app like auto killer, cache cleaner, titanium backup.
Personally auto kilter is a much better app than ATK.

Is there any support here or elsewhere for the Korean Root? Then again, I think I'd wait at least 2-4 weeks until I get Froyo before rooting.

I think the biggest missing feature is tethering, but I guess that'll come with Froyo anyways and SKTelecom has advertised they'll move to unlimited data with free tethering in August to support this and other devices on plans 55,000 won and up.
*Edit* Tethering is not missing, I just didn't know the name of it, it's found in the same exact place as it is in the international version, wireless & network, mobile AP.

m2, i went 45,000 but I've already gotten word that we can update and they'll further discount our phone by 3,000 won a month. So, it'll only cost 7,000 won per month even though the plans are listed as a 10,000 won price difference ...nice

Swype
Not sure if you've already discovered this but..
I just upgraded my korean galaxy s firmware to DH09 with Samsung Kies and it included swype and a really good RAM clearer. Makes it a bit more snappy. Actually it may be too good because it can clear the widgets out to.
Not sure what else it has yet. Still playing with it. Actually someone just called me and an option to record the phone call was on the screen.... Can't say I'll ever use it but interesting.
If this is what Eclair 2.1 is like then Froyo 2.2 is going to be amazing
Cheers

Hi I'm new to this site and new to my phone as well. I also have the korean version of the Galaxy S and was able to upgrade to DH09. Im sorry but do you mean when you say good RAM clearer? I noticed that my phone has 326 RAM and the I9000 has 576MB RAm. Is there a big difference on that? Also, can you tell me where I can find the radio? I only found the radio app in the TV widget. But if I try scanning channels, it can't find any. Is it because I'm in the Philippines?
Does your phone also limits sms characters to 80 letters? Coz mine does, and the standard number of characters in the Philippines is 160. But I just downloaded handcent sms and I was able to send more characters
Thanks in advance!
I'll try to update this thread since we don't get enough answers! I kind of think we should try to get an "official Korean FAQ" going, as this thread is inappropriately labeled for general questions and issues going forward. Also, I edited one of my previous posts bc I'm a noob who couldn't find the tethering settings, I believe at the time of writting it was available, though it could've come in a fw update I think I just overlooked it.

Hopefully your radio is an easy fix, I had a similar problem with the DMB until I figured out how to work it. I did a little test just now to make sure the functionality is essentially the same, and in my experience, - it is.
On the top right corner of the device (if you are looking at the screen) you will notice a little cutout break in the device, this is the DMB antenna. In my apartment it is the only way I can find radio stations, even having headphones in (the way normal phones sans tv antennas work to get stations) wont work without having the antenna up and out. Obviously an eye-sore and a bit of a design flaw, imho assuming it can try an alternate if both are present, however, I don't have much of a use for the radio so I can look past it and I don't even fully understand the need for it with the TV but Korean's are just used to having these janky antennas protruding from their phones. My iRiver mp3 player didn't even need a DMB antenna to pick up stations, it worked fine with headphones, I'm not really sure why they necessitated the need for the antenna.
In my test, the only radio stations that came up were in the national scan, but this is probably location dependent, try to scan metro and national to see if you can find what you are looking for, if nothing comes up there is a technical problem with frequencies being scanned or something else.
Regarding the memory, this is how all the SGS variants report their available memory. No SGS, AFAIK, reports the full amount of memory and there has been plenty of debate on how much memory the units actually shipped and last I read Samsung never released an official presser on the quantity. These questions might have been answered over time, by Samsung or teardowns, or what have you, but this isn't unique to the SHW-m110s.
Regarding the SMS letters. We have an 80 byte limit on our phones, this means 80 english characters and spaces and each Korean syllable (composed of upto 4 characters, or letters if you will) will count as 2 bytes. I'll assume this has something to do with the carrier restrictions on SMS/MMS. Handcent might help us get around this, but might not, if it's truly a carrier issue. In your case, have you tried just sending something with 100 characters? For us it's a "soft-limit", meaning we can type 150 characters but it requires to be switched over to MMS, but you might not find the same with your carrier. Do a test if you like, especially if you prefer the stock app it's worth a test.Try to send a bigger text and check online to see how they charged you. In my case it automatically switches to MMS and they are treated the same for cost/phone plan purposes so it makes no difference to me (with the exception of having to switch 3G on when I have it disabled, ugh). With my previous dumbphone my long text messages would actually be sent as 2 text messages, another thing you should check to make sure isn't an issue to you (I think handcent would be able to get around this, again, I think this is a Korean carrier limit but it doesn't change our pricing...as a matter of fact, if handcent sent 2 50 character messages it would be more "expensive" if we go over our limit than if we sent 1 100 character MMS.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, I did discover that, also the latest firmware gives faster 3G data connections. If you are ever wondering what is going on with the FW upgrade go to naver and search "갤럭시s ____" fill the blank in with the updated FW build. Then translate the results from the page you've found.
Regarding Swype specifically, they gave us an old build, which is a bit disappointing. The latest/greatest has voice input, amongst other things. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

It seems that the Korean government is currently blocking this for competition reasons. This really pisses me off because, first, at least last year KT was growing faster than SK which means SK should be given every opportunity to make changes. Second, and more importantly, one of the president's platforms was decreasing the price of wireless services, this move would have to be followed by a similar move by KT if they want to be competitive so we'd all have cheaper options for massive data. I'm about 70% sure I'll write him a letter personally, I just think it'll be thrown in the trash because a 6 year old could probably articulate a better argument in Korean than me, of course I could have someone do the translating but I actually want them to be my words and it to be that much more authentic.
Hi,
Yes I do think we should have our own thread. It will be good in sharing things we find out about our phone. Our country doesn't support DMB yet that's the reason why I think the Radio or TV is not working. I found a link giving all the apk files and I tried copying it to my phone. But still it won't work. I guess I really won't be able to make it work. I found the list of all the apps from android forums.
I tried installing Handcent SMS and I was able to address the 80characters problem. Now I can send up to 160 characters per message.
I'm excited to see what Froyo can do for our phone.

Yeah, I'll write something up and post a new thread within a week. I'll try to get it translated to Korean because at least a few prominent hackers in Korea visit so if they can share their knowledge in either language at least we can start to ask questions a bit easier and in a setting we are more comfortable. Plus, if we get their devs in house a bit more then the rest of the GS community can learn more from them.
Anywho, I'm glad you replied because I have a question. What is the cellular radio frequencies and technologies you use in the Philippines. I want to know more about the world comparability of this phone, so any info you have on the radio tech in your area and what bands this can access would be great.
Hi all
I am getting to like my XOOM now but am experiencing a few issues and hope someone can help me out with some info.
First and foremost ... do we have any communications from moto or google regarding time line for an update? In particular for the sd card and also far more generally for the whole honeycomb experience.
Next, the ebay app, the market tells me it isn't available in my region (uk) in the same way the bbc iplayer app does. I know the bbc one isn't available yet but am struggling tto confirm if that if the case for the ebay app.
I have seen a few screenshots that seem to suggest that the market can be filtered for tablet app? I cant see how ... perhaps I imagined this feature?
Some of the time I am finding the overall responsiveness pretty poor and I can't ally work out why. Anyone else getting similar issues?
Lastly ... in writing this post I have made afew typos and correcting them has been a nightmare with the text selector arrow and the cursor getting misaligned ... normal or just me?
Thanks for any info
Last I did read some news about SD card update, it said that the update is imminent, no idea what this actually means.
About your last question, yes this happens to me also.
Sorry, I can't help you with the other questions.
As far as the Sd card update I have asked that question on the moto forum and all i ever get back is that they are drafting an official response about the card, but that was about two weeks ago that they said that. Guess it takes two weeks to put out a response about a SD card that devs here already got working. Of course no one knows whether it is Googles fault for not releasing the source or Moto's for not telling us what is going on. I would count on getting it working maybe when the 4gLTE upgrade is rolling out.
As far as the market I have no idea sorry.

Hi all
I am getting to like my XOOM now but am experiencing a few issues and hope someone can help me out with some info.

Cheers guys
Next thing ... while awaiting any more concrete answers to the other stuff ...
The "darkness " of honeycomb and android generally is all well and good as a differentiating design feature compared to iOS but really I think a "light " theme would go a long way to improving the overall feel. I guess though that is something only root and a few tweaks will offer? I don't get it, before phones got "smart " a big thing was the ability to theme them but now there is next to no flexibility :-(
Also noticing a lot of widget lag when waking the device ... and I have 2 mail widgets as I have to gmail accounts ... at least one of them spends a lot of time "empty " awaiting an update, is this also standard for other users?
Thanks again

I just manually did mines it feels pretty good to be on

Got to give it time I guess let me know what y'all think
Its goin good for me... on other radio it would go back and forth from H to 3g now its more stable... other than that no color change like others have reported

Randy what carrier do you have?
GPS is more responsive. I'm hoping it fixes my call problems (I get soundwave voices when the call doesn't connect properly). Overall not too bad

It feels a little faster I'm on T-Mobile forget waiting for a over the air update just
do it manually its so easy its so easy feels good to have a phone that gets updates
Quicker then others
I updated manually. found a little colour change from 2.3.3 which was good. Gtalk is pretty goood, no lag at all.
You can finally delete your Tags now, btw.
I'm just glad that there is no more reboots. I do dislike the fact that Google did not address the laggy browser issue though.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
Browser is still laggy, the colour has changed indefinitely( I cannot tell if it's for the better or worse, really hard to tell without a side by side comparison, someone with two Nexus S devices should do a comparison and post on here), GPS locks within 2-5 seconds much faster now, G Chat video is lag free however I have not tested on 3g with another Nexus S device, still no Facebook sync support, and no Chrome syncing. Overall I believe Google was smart to make this a small update, besides the fact that they launched Mobile G Video chat, that would have been smart tl put on the next version of Android, but they treated it as such a minor thing. Still the update just fixed bugs and added G Video, next update BETTER fix the keyboard though.

Ustream's GoLive just force close now. I think Tango and Fring also quit working. Still, the WiFi improvement and GTalk update made this worth while for me!
Oh no, I am gonna test Tango because I like it more than GTalk to do video calling to Android and iOS.

i have noticed 3 main differences.
improved the reception during calls
improved earpiece, the sound is louder and clearer
and a bug fix, some ppl who uses the european f/w have noticed the wording when you connect the usb as a mass storage, previously it always says usb connected on/off (forgot which one), whether it's enabled or not, now the wording is corrected.
I am unable to get facebook account synchronization to work.

I never seem to get H, but only 3G. I've just got this phone, looked up this forum, and upgraded to 2.3.4. On my previous phone (Desire), i used to get H at home, but only 3G now. Is this a common problem or just coz of 2.3.4?
You probably still get "H" but it's just showing the "3G" symbol. I had a Desire too before and my new Nexus S behaves just like yours, based on speeds I'm pretty sure to be on HSDPA though...
Thanks pullermann. Looking at the speeds, I agree that they look more like "H" than "3G". Was just a bit concerned..

The connection icon will say "3G" when you are connected to UMTS or HSPA. It will never say "H" unless you happen to be running custom firmware that has added that in.
EDIT: You can check network type by going to Menu > Settings > About phone > Status > Mobile network type. It will say either EDGE (2G), UMTS (3G), or HSDPA (also 3G).

Thats right, i'm running rooted stock have tried CM7 and with it i have a H showing, but not with stock image, there is only 3G but speed is H.

hi all
for some strange reason when i first got this device i was able to go to the samsung app store and
download the kindle for samsung app. It was nice, it had multi window function and I was quite happy about that.
as on my note 8 i had to hack the darn thing to work with multi-window (tutorials are lovely things aren't they )
I had to do a factory reset on the thing and ever since then i'm not able to find that app anymore.
I finally stumbled on a thread in xda where some one posted the kindle for samsung app in an other thread for the S6 i think it was. I managed to grab it from there but this one has no multi window function.
I've busted my brains for three days now, message samsung twice with absolutely zero luck. they seem to selectively become unable to comprehend anything I say beyond a point. Tried all kinds of vpn ip re-routing and still can't get onto the samsung app store to get this friggin app.
so if anyone in here has it would you please.. please please pleaaaaaseeeee im begging you be so kind as to give me a dropbox link or something so i can pick this thing up and finally use kindle with multiwindow? please?
I'm seriously drained now looking around and looking for a way around samsungs nonsense (don't even get me started on the google play store -not available in your country blah blah) uuuuuhhhh
help... i give up please help.
What you get in the Samsung store is dependent on device description in the build.prop. perhaps check if a flash of some Rom changed it.
Hmm I'm not sure what you mean. I'm new-ish to android. If you mean about rooting and changing from the official samsung rom to an other then no, I've never done that.
the phone is new. It was initially turned on and setup in the USA that may be why, I dunno. Samsung said that the kindle for samsung app is simply not part of the store which services my location. They zoned my country out (for an ebook reader? Maybe it's for the book deals but I don't care for that)
If you meant something else , what should I be looking for in this file and what should it be?
I guess it's time to find some tutorials again. (Heck of a lot of trouble for just one app though this is getting crazy for one apk)
I'm sure if I can just get the apk I'd be good.
Thanks though.
yeah, that was what i was refering to. if you flash a new rom it might be that the description of your phone changes.
the only thing i could think of would be that your sim card changed the region your phone is accounted to and so you can't download it anymore. a possible way would be to reset your phone and startup without sim, connect to wifi and install it from samsungs store and after that you can insert the sim card again and continue the setup. i understand that this is not a convenient way, so you'd better just search for the apk.
samsung is restricting access, because it comes bundles with one year service 1 free book per month.
i just tried it and could download and install it from the galaxy apps store.
Lol would you believe all while I was doing this there was no sim card in the phone?
I was getting a feel for the phone and transferring contacts playing with it all before I put the sulim on. In fact, I only put the sim card in five minutes ago for the first time.
it has to be the book deals. I don't care about that, I don't want any novels.
Could u extract the apk with "es file explorer" and post a Dropbox link?
That would be awesome , that's all I'd need I'm sure of it. That particular apk
is no where to be found anywhere online
Here is a tutorial on how to do it

gonna check that link out, give me a minute

Also just heard from someone who said that if I ever did flash my phone with an other rom that the app wouldn't work anymore (at least that was his experience). I'm not really into that anyways. About the only thing I'd be interested in would be getting this SM-N910H to unlock LTS like the N190C I'm guessing it's just software lock out. I saw something in an other forum thread on here with people experimenting with it. I've not finished reading to the end of that thread yet. It did seem that was really no difference in these phones though. I dunno. Guess I'd better back up right quickly then haha.
What is LTS?
Oh that's 4G I believe that's what it's called
Oh it is called lte around here. I do not understand that you need to unlock it. It should be activated by default.

oh snap you're right I must have gotten the acronym mixed up with linux lts (long term support) you're correct its LTE.. but on my model it doesn't have it included.
the SM-910C and a few others have it mine is the SM-910H that doesn't have it by default but seems it might be a software lock-out. I'd love to have it though.
i did not see mentions of software locked LTE here yet.
i found this thread which claims (at the start at least) that your phone is a 3G version of the note 4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/help/sm-n910h-3g-variant-t2925648
i did not read the whole thread, but if it really is not unlockable, perhaps you can exchange the phone with someone who does not need 4g and wants to have a little better battery life. in the end LTE modes were always known to drown your battery more quickly then 3g modems, i guess it is still like that.

Hey good looking out! Thanks.!!!
the truth is that I don't really need 4g at all.. I just like to have a complete device that's all. I don't use mobile data over here because it's terribly slow no matter what "g" they claim to have over here and I found it to expensive for what I get no to mention I'd likely only use it for text or whats app. I just stick with wifi. But I'll check out that article
and if it does indeed drain battery then there really isn't a compelling reason for getting it unless I was going to sell the phone to someone who would need data.
Hows that kindle app working out for you though?:good:
Hi all,
Do you think the 6P will work without battery drain or connectivity problems in Mainland China? Anyone using the 6P as their daily in mainland China. I don't want to move on from my Note 4 N9108v, if I'm going to find that the Huawei is bogged down with problems due to Google issues. I can use a VPN to get apps etc when I wnat, but if it is essentially compromised at a hardware level, than I cannot go there. Would love to get into a nexus now that the camera is near high standard. Anyone?
Also, Should be fine getting the HK version rather than the US version, right?
Ok - Not much of a response here. However, I was able to get a few PM responses and used another HK thread. Have decided to have a friend pick one up from HK for me and will know very soon whether or not it was a big mistake to Nexufy in Beijing China.
ive been using a 6p international version (HK) the phone works in china mobile as well as Unicom, 4g speeds are awesome... as for the battery,, ive noticed my 6p draining quite fast... perhaps has something to do with the google apps trying to connect to the google services that are unavailable in mainland.. out of that.. the phone works amazingly

Ty for the response...
I now have one. Weird that with my WiFi (China mobile) on, the phone keeps telling me that the network is connected, but no internet... When clearly there is. I haven't really tried the 4g speeds much, but they were dead slow on my note 4.. Yet amazingly fast on my note 4 when abroad, so I figure that it's just a China speed thing. Battery ends awesome enough compared to note 4 too.

That a problem caused by our network censorship that blocks Google. You need to disable "Captive Portal" scanning or set the server to a different one to avoid it.
Try the command "settings put global captive_portal_server g.cn" in Terminal with Superuser privilege.
Been using mine as a daily driver for 3 days, but flashed CM on it, so battery life does not impress. Wonder how good it is on stock, though, because all these Google apps will drain battery if you don't disable them or hook up to a VPN.

Yes, I am not ready to root yet and I am resisting the almost overwhelming temptation to root and rom right now, as I want to see and feel the natural stock experience for a good couple of weeks so that I can compare.
I am finding the battery is excellent for my situation so far. I have no regrets in terms of moving toward this rather than LG's V10, Huawei's 8 mate, Xiaomi's future offerings, or the Samsung Note 5... So far.
The wifi no internet notification, doesn't seem to affect any access to the internet. So ... I'm not going to worry about it - just looks weird with the little exclamation mark next to the wifi symbol. My work's wifi is VPN connected and I have two ready and set up on my phone for use. Although I don't really use them much when I travel to and fro and rely on the LTE network - (although at least one will work if I need it). I found that the native messaging service on the phone didn't send or receive a couple of texts yesterday, so I installed a new messaging app (SMS messaging (ASOP) Sylvain Galand) so far it seems to have worked 100%, but I haven't fully tested it yet. PLenty of time for that.
Yep, I'll stay on stock till after Xmas and see how it goes.
ok - Intersting thin is - was playing around with the old 6P putting 8.1 on it. couldn't get rid of the cross and connectivity problem.
Used to get fixed by:
settings put global captive_portal_server g.cn
But for ANdroid 8.1 it seems it is this:
#!/usr/bin/env sh
adb shell settings put global captive_portal_fallback_url http://g.cn/generate_204
adb shell settings put global captive_portal_http_url http://www.google.cn/generate_204
adb shell settings put global captive_portal_https_url https://www.google.cn/generate_204
adb shell settings put global captive_portal_other_fallback_urls http://www.qualcomm.cn/generate_204
from a person called Tonyseek from here: https://gist.github.com/tonyseek/bc5b72197ddb15418c61406061720186
Thank you sir.
Doubtful anyone else will have the same difficulty as I would imagine no one is using the 6P in china these days. But he solve is here if it helps.
