The picture camera has zoom function how hard would it be to enable this for video capture?
there ARE zoom buttons in the right top corner...but not working
maybe with 3.1
the buttons are there and the functionality is written into the camera app. Unless its a hardware restriction it should be possible to enable it.
Have you tried using the zoom before or after having made a recording? My Sony digital camera can record video and you can use the zoom on the lens until you start recording, then for some reason it's locked out until you stop recording.

The camera doesn't have a zoom lens for either the still or video options. The zoom you are getting is just a digital enlargement.
so what stops the tablet from digitally enlarging the video as well? too processor intensive?

Makes sense. One of my earlier digital cameras had both optical and digital zoom. While it could use both for stills, it could only do optical for video.

As far as I can tell, the built-in camera app only lets you use the front facing camera to take still photos, and not to record videos. (Seems odd since the front facing camera is presumably designed to support video for video real time video calls...) Anyone know how you can record video with the front facing camera?
you'll probably need a 3rd party software to use that camera for Self video blogging.
Unless they add it later down the track.
Fring allows you to use that camera for video calls. But yes, Its just a matter of someone developing a app.
has anyone found or made a app for this yet?
I wouldnt bother to be honest it is a pile of wank. But anyways there is an app ive seen before that can record via the normal camera and records you through the front camera as you record.

Do you remember what the app is called, because I have a Galaxy Tab and my theory is: if it works for Galaxy S, it will work for the Tab.
is called quick video mail
I shot a picture using the front camera, just to see the quality. I'm pretty amazed by the quality (considering its me on the picture)! Could some of you share pictures from front camera too?
Anyone?
Yeah.. it's pretty good!
Are there any apps out there that let us use the camera as a pc webcam?
Pretty sure there is. I downloaded droidcam 3-2 but never tried it
You're right, the front camera is pretty good, but, I think it can be smoother, just 2mpx and no auto-focus, why it's so jerky ?!
I hardly think they're going to build an articulating auto-focus lens array into the top of your phone just for doing your hair.
lol, i knew before i got this phone that wouldn't stand the frame rate of the front cam (2mp front cam sucks as expect to me, but better than any other phone currently). Will always use back camera video chat (if app supports it).

How would you see yourself when using rear camera for video calls?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I did a quick video comparison of the front v rear camera on the SGS2
Front facing cam:-

Rear facing cam:-

Shame about the 'zoom' on the rear camera, often find myself using 720p mode just to get more in the frame!

Quality on the front cam is great.

Very good quality!!
there is no phone better than the SGS II in the front camera
most phones use vga .. when sgs2 use a full 2mp
try to Tango with an iPhone and see the difference
I just want to share this awesome video i made.
looks pretty good thanks for the vid

Stock camera has this option. Tap the settings icon, swipe to the video section and under the resolution options you'll see it. The two 4k resolutions don't have any slow-mo options, but the others do. The slowest you can go with 1080p is 60fps, and 720p or lower is 120fps.
I see you also have this short distortion (weird stripes) at the beginning of the video.
Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
Also when taking clear image / HDR shots.
I don't have it when using hdr
Yeah, i get those lines, when i'm recording too. Nice slide though.
Looks like fun..
But the quality of the 720p 120fps is really bad on out phones.. not sure why... is it the camera app issue or hardware?

Hello, I was reading a Galaxy Note 4 review and came across 2x lossless zooming for 30fps 1080p video recording and wondered why we don't have it.
Lossless zooming is great as it preserves detail in zoomed situations while keeping the file size big, unlike 4k recording which would consume lots of storage to record then zoom afterwards
As our phone supports 4k recording, doesn't the G2 have the ability to have lossless zooming capability?
If so, can someone tell me if there is there an app that enables us to do this, or someone, perhaps xdabbeb, can enable it for us??
Thanks

Lossless zoom is achieved when u have an optical lens movment.
I dont believe any of these phones have optical zoom.
You can't "enable" optical zoom. It literally means that the lesnses need to move back and forth. Like in cameras. You see the lens moving and adjusting to the zoom.

I thought it was a software thing on mobile phones where they increased video resolution and cropped it to show the area you are zooming in on so that the zoomed part remains 1080p??
For example, a quarter of a 4k video would be a 'zoomed in' 1080p one

I guess.. It can't preserve detail so it has to be cropped.
It's like zooming into a picture in photoshop.
We have digital zoom only. Digital zoom scales an area up to "zoom" in. It blows up pictures making them look nasty.
This is a great question and I think the prior replies have missed the concept. Yes, our camera is like 8 or 12 megapixels, but 1080p HD video is like only 2 megapixels. So when we record video on our 8 megapixel sensors, the sensor "line-skips" to resolve only a 2 megapixel (1080p) image. When we zoom in, digitally, it keeps the same "line-skipping" design as non-zoomed. This results in a lower-than-HD resolution. It would be VERY SMART to adjust the line-skipping design, or not line-skip at all, on a digital zoom, thus still using 2 megapixels worth of photo sites to capture the "zoomed" image. This is the same concept as "sensor windowing" used on RED cameras when changing the resolution. I'm surprised this is not the new/standard way to implement digital zooming on ALL modern smartphones to preserve details and resolution when digitally zooming, because of course there is no optical zoom option.

I am quite sure the note 4 does not have optical zooming. This is the reason it made me think and 'come up' with this idea.

I do not know much of cameras so I do not fully understand what you(Jackdup) are saying, but I think you know what I mean
Just wondering, do you know of any apps that can do this, or know how this works? Maybe you can explain it to a developer to implement it in our devices
Thanks
Change to 4K/2160p in Quality Settings! The only real compression is on youtube's side. And I will say I see a little better quality on my Master File than on youtube.
I decided to test the 4k video recording on the Nexus 6 by shooting my entire vacation with it. I've compiled a recap video showcasing the camera's abilities.
-There conditions recorded in are: high light, low light, sunny, overcast, indoors and outdoors, etc.
-I've zoomed in a few times and moved the phone to force refocus in a few clips.
-There has been NO post editing to the footage such as color correction, cropping, stabilizing, etc.
-Crossfading, fade to black, muting of audio, and title overlays are the only alterations made to compile this video
ENJOY!
Looks like OIS keeps making things a bit juttery and focusing in and out at times.

No... But 3rd party cameras are not a complete solution. They use the existing libs and camera HAL etc, which is software.
But you can try it, who knows?
i need to look around to see if there are any apps that lock focus.
That would come in handy

Try with Cinema FV-5
I watched the whole thing before realizing my monitor at work isn't 4K
nice video - I'll have to watch it later at home to really see the quality. The focusing issue sucks and is really pronounced on this phone, I wonder if L Camera is any better at it.

I have that app in my wish list. Gotta do some more research to see if it offers what I want. I prefer simplicity like the stock app is designed, but I don't think google will ever include these especiall features.. Including 60/120/240 fps.

camera focus doesnt seem to be an issue with cinema fv-5. pretty sure its an android issue as my nexus 5 had the same problem (as mentioned above). anyway i just shot a few minutes of 4k video w cinema fv-5 and i dont see any re-focusing nonsense going on

I hope they add 60/120 fps soon. That's the only camera feature I really want
Open camera supports everything people!!!! Just downloaded it and is now my default camera!!!! It support all resolutions for stills and recording, shows amount of memory left in real time, and a lot of other things and you get really check the options for a lot and best part of all its open source!!! So always free and never ad filled, I think Google should have hired this guy to make their camera app!

I started watching the video on my phone, then decided to stream it to my 42 inch flat screen tv to check out the quality on a larger scale, and then realized my 42 inch TV is lower resolution than my phone as a result. lol!
i was recently looking around for other camera apps so as to see how the device's ability to shoot in RAW compares to various cameras. I was considering trying FV5 but was checking out the free alternatives first.
I tried L Camera, which did let me adjust ISO, white balance, and so on, but it had some pretty major issues that need to be worked out still.
While I haven't tried FV5 yet (so I can't say much about that app specifically) I just tried out Open Camera (the above post caused me to remember it showing up in the app store several times while I was browsing) and wowee it's actually really good so far. Only one bug so far that I've encountered and it's very minor. The customization and various settings are really well thought out.
It says it can do 60/120 fps with a disclaimer that it may not always reach the designated fps if the hardware doesn't support it..so maybe?
auto-focus seemed quite a bit faster compared to google's stock camera app and it's much easier to adjust the lighting quickly than any other camera apps I've tried so far.
Right now the only thing I can really find "wrong" with it is the overall design and layout of the app, but it's not poorly designed at all.
I'll be using Open Camera as my default camera app until a major flaw presents itself or google amps up it's own app to compete. Very pleasantly surprised so far.
