Hi, I just bought a xoom today and so far am loving it. Is there anything I should know about the xoom? Any problems?(I know about the SD card)
What are some good Tablet apps in the market?
I have a nexus one currently, so I know how to use the xoom. I live up in Canada and I bought the wifi only version, its on android 3.01, is there a release date for 3.1 in Canada?
Thanks alot

Apps:
- Thumb keyboard (Must Have!)
- Tweetcaster HD
- Zinio
- Nook
- Kindle App
- File Manager HD
- Quick Office Pro HD
- Google Docs
- Opera Mobile (although no Flash support yet)
Games:
- Samurai II: Vengeance
- Riptide
- Jet Car Stunts
- Fruit Ninja HD
- Pew Pew 2
- Bang Bang racing
- Mini Squadren
- Pinball HD
That should be enough to get you started. Although unlocking and flashing one of the custom OCing kernals helps make this beast fly. 3.1 helps too!

If you haven't already, check out all of the threads in the Xoom forums (and go back a few pages to find some hidden goodies). The Xoom is great out of the box, especially with the 3.1 upgrade, but really comes alive with the Team Tiamat customizations. As a Canadian WiFi you can update to the US version using BRD's version (in Xoom Development) without any problems.
Please note, when you unlock your bootloader, make sure to never try to re-lock...it will brick your Xoom for sure.
Good luck!
Actually, I saw a perfect thread for you to do the updating you are looking to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093112
So, please note the following:
1. You will find the instructions that worked on his post # 7
2. There is an updated version of the Solarnz's CWM Recovery (3.2.0.0) and a newer Tiamat kernel (1.4.4) and even a new ROM, but I would start with what is in the instructions above as they are known to work and are stable.
Please also, don't update in CWM Rom Manager to the newest listed Xoom recovery (4.0.0.x)...it's broken and will mess you up. Just stick with the instructions above and you'll do fine.
Apps:
Pulse
Music*
XDA premium app (of course)
Beautiful Widgets
Angry Birds
Fruit Ninja
Its also a smart idea to set up a Google account to sync everything. Its nearly seamless. Google music is only in beta but it works well for me.

I suggest fpse and to install tiamat kernel for smooth consistent 60 fps if you want to play ps1 games.
Wow, never knew the xoom had a rom. Thanks for the apps guys. Ill probably root it later on, I want to get used to it stock before I go changing things.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
in order to realise your xooms full potential, I strongly suggest rooting and flashing either just tiamats kernal or the new room all located in the developer section. You'll notice right away coming from stock the vast improvements with snappyness, responsiveness, and overall a better running machine. It definitely becomes an I pad killer once unleashed.

I have been wading through the talk about the 1.2 update to get a stock version of Froyo and I don't see any real advantage over the NookieFroyo I am running now (emmc). I saw a video from another thread that showed a 1.2 NC running and some apps didn't load and it doesn't really look like an Android Native. More like a slowly developing B&N OS. Am I missing something?
Obviously there's no point right now as it can't be nootered. So until the developers play with it, there really is no point.

Beyond that, there isn't much to the 1.2 update over the original with regards to functionality. The market that is now included is dismally scarce of apps; 137 total count as of this post and is actually B&N's own site, not the actual droid market. The overall functionality is still that of the simple ebook reader that the NC is created as in the first place. Rooting it is still the only real way of waking this tablet out of the B&N slumber that has been placed on it in its out-of-the-box form.
It will eventually be with it.

That was my thought exactly. Even if it gets rooted, it doesn't look like it will have the cool "status bar" with the back and home natively working. Until something like that comes along for the B&N OS, I think I will stay NookieFroyo for now.
My question would be does the market work? I keep seeing the BN Apps but nothing to indicate if the Market is functional or included.
When my DroidX went from 2.1 to 2.2 I was expecting WOW with all the anticipation and hype, but the reality is that outside of flash support, there was nothing worth upgrading for. It's as exciting as upgrading Windows XP from service pack 1 to service pack 2 but less exciting than going to service pack 3.
So if you already have a rooted stock NC, upgrading to 2.2 won't really make much of a difference to you other than flash which in many cases means less flash based ads. But heck, we are hackers and what's the point of the NC if you can't hack it again and again when new releases come out. Otherwise it would be like buying a puzzle, solving it and not having an opportunity to start over with new pieces. Get though this one and I'm sure B&N will have the 2.2.1 upgrade in a few months and we can do this again, woohooo!
flash is about the only thing i see that makes the update worth it.
raze
oh yeah and the overhauled JIT complier should speed up things for our non rooted brethren. Stock software gives the only advantage of newspapers and magazines.
Ill rock the new stock. since the buying the nook for android reasons mostly I have found myself reading agian and have a few magazine subscriptions.

Exactly =D.
It seems (to me anyway) that flash runs quite a bit better on 1.2 (vs the ROMs I've tried). I hope we can see the same results with some ROMs
I've had Unrooted Stock since day one. Instead I run CM7 from my 4gb Class 6 SD. It runs well and, thanks to it, I've had the best of both worlds.
I've played with the update a bit today and I'll have to agree that for Rooters until 1.2 is Rooted it's not worth it, but for the None Techie this Update is great as it enables New NookBook and KidsBook features and it gives them Apps and Flash. So it's up to you whether you update or not.
Either way this Update makes life easier for Devs as they'll have an Official Stable 2.2 kernal for the Nook to work from, and other helpful additions. Good Luck Guys

B&N will never make the nook like a normal tablet. They need to preserve the market space it occupies as an eReader with extras, not a tablet that can be an eReader.
If you are running stock, then its a decent upgrade. Otherwise, its just refinement for the system.
I updated since I just run CM7 off an 8gb card. What I have to say really annoyed me is the pricing of the apps. Take angry birds for example. In the Android Market its free. On the itunes appstore its either 99¢ or $1.99, I can't remember. But in the Nook Color appstore its $2.99. Other apps are similarly priced. I see BN upping the price on more apps that would normally be free or cheap.

I just bought a nook at lunch today, planning on rooting it tonight (I recently rooted my Samsung Epic happily, and when figuring out to do that I read about rooting nooks). So during the afternoon at the office, I got an email from ZDNet raving about the upgrade, how it turned the Nook into a Real Android Tablet. so I thought, well, maybe I should just do this instead of rooting it. So I downloaded the zip file, and once the Nook was charged I ran the upgrade, which went fine. But I see now that the upgrade is pretty much a waste of time, no comparison to the features of a rooted nook, and it is currently unrootable.
There are quite a few posts here about restoring a nook to stock, but I am not sure if they apply to 1.2. What is the best method of restoring my 1.2 to 1.1, then rooting?
If you have stock, simply force the reboot 8 times, and the Nook will return to stock 1.1 for you (rather than the 1.2).

B&N aren't allowing any Ad supported Apps in their store so Devs have to makeup with pricing. On top of that, the Angrybirds is the more expensive HD version. So, at least for Angrybirds, the pricing makes sense. Unfortunately, the lack of Ad support means that most likely there won't be that many free Apps on the Nook Store since Devs need to get money somehow.

The Fix is to remove your SD card then install. B&N should fix that because this Fix isn't obvious to most people.

Has anybody been able to play spiderman, or modern combat2, or splinter cell because i cant?
First time i tried it gave me an error when downloading content. I found out that sammy has a download policy so this was a no go. I then installed them on my htc desire and downloaded all 3 above games and tested them and they all work. I copied yhe downloaded content to my samsung hoping that my problem was solved. But for my suprise spiderman and modern combat2 started but they still want to download content and of course it fails. Splinter cell on the other side started the game but when i am in it doesnt show me any textures of the environment and everything is white.
So please someone help me.
I have to mention that the games were bought from my carrier's webpage and they all work perfect on my htc desire.

99% of apps you obtain via Google Market or Amazon App Store or Gameloft/third party, are locked to either your google account, amazon account, or your phone/imei.
I really don't want to mess up with forum rules here, so I ask, is it ok to post a link to another forum's thread with Android's HD game releases?

sure, go ahead, as long as you don't sell those apps yourself there or that site contains warez, you should be fine. in general, links to shops or other forums are tolerated or (if helpful) appreciated.
just a quick note...buy games from wap gameloft website and its cheaper then buying from market.android...

First of all... i've got those games working fine on my phone + GTracing which also works flawlessly.
Bought Modern Combat 2 through the gamehub, but bought the other 3 directly from Gameloft from the website.
And another thing. Gameloft has a download policy, that reads the specs and model of yout phone, so the game is locked to the phone - therefore it does NOT work on any other phone, if you try to move the .APK. So if you change your phone, you have to buy the games again. They give the reason that they have to develop the games specific for the phones, as Android and Android-hardware is very fragmented (in which they have a point), and that cost them a lot of money - opposed to iOS, which is the same on all iPhones - which apparently is cheaper to develop to.
You CAN buy some games from gameloft though - like Modern Combat 2 - on the market, and that will follow your future line of phones, but it is also more expensive in the market (about 40%), for the reasons explained above.
But the games is very cheap directly from the website (sometimes down to 1-1,5 Euro for the HD-games, when on sale), when you see what you get for the money - so i guess it's an allright policy in my opinion...
Via their tweet, which you can get here, they're doing Let's Golf for free for the next couple of hours. Unfortunately, it's apparently not compatible with the SGS2.

Sucks I know. But you can buy some of their other games for 99p instead of £3. I managed to purchase quite a few games at 99p.
Ironically it let me purchase Let's Golf 2 HD for 99p and the download filename had GTi9100 in the actual filename so it's utter rubbish it does not support this phone....

The freebies are for the UK only, for whatever reason.
There was a post somewhere earlier about the free games, and that explained that, but I can't find it due to the search currently being down.
Yesterday I bought my first game for the SGS2 and since I'm a huge fan of racing games... guess what is the tittle -> Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD from Gameloft.
And now the interesting part:
1) As you can see from the images below, in the Android Market on my PC there is this message: 'This item is not compatible with your device.' (The same is with N.O.V.A. 2).
2) Prices!!! Asphalt 6 HD in Android Market costs 4.92 euro (today is 4.89 ). BUT in the gameloft's web store it is only 3 euro. And the same is with all other games.
Strange and I wonder why are these differences
Starforce woks fine too.

No worries! I kind of figured as much. Once all the kinks of the ICS rom are ironed out, I'll be switching to that.
Sent via my internet connected mobile cellular telephone.
So I posted about Asphalt 6 and DH2 not working, Gameloft nicely sent me Hero of Sparta and Backstab for my trouble.
Backstab installs and then when you try to download the data on first run it says it has a problem and can't download. It loops through that till you give up.
Hero of Sparta straight out won't install, not their fault, its because of the pre-installed demo that you can't delete because its a system app!
Of course HoS could be fixed if I could root my A500, but I've been having problems running AfterOTA to root it because it won't flash a kernel for some reason, nvflash keeps giving an error 0x120002 saying the partition table is invalid.
Is this just Gameloft sucking or is there maybe something wrong with my Tablet? I bought it refurbished from Acer.
Gameloft is sucking, however you can root it by installing a rom with superuser pre-installed. There are plenty of tutorials here ranging from Honeycomb to ICS. Once installed you are rooted and can uninstall the pointless apps. There is an application out there that downloads Gameloft data for you if you have trouble doing so on your device, i forget what it's called, but i suggest looking that up.

I managed to get root, unfortunately my A500 is having problems with flashing kernels etc. It just wont do it may need to downgrade and upgrade again. I got Hero of Sparta working at least.
EDIT: And the version of Hero of Sparta the sent me is the same as the damn demo version that came with the tablet!!!! WTF
EDIT2: Tried an external program to download the Backstab HD game data, it points to a file on the server that does not exist! I can only download game data for Samsung phones, the Sony/acer/motorola/etc data is not there.
Emailed them back they sent me the same thing and Gangstar Rio. So so far I have gotten 5 games out of this mess, but only 1 works and its a demo!
That's why Im not buy gamelot stuff I have them almost all and working well in my a500 from a site that have them cooked.
Yeah, that's why Gameloft sucks. I have bought two games from them right when i got my tablet, through that app that was on our tablet. Two months later ran into problems, cs wouldn't help because they could not track where i bought it from.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I bought HoS some time ago and it used to work perfectly fine, but after about a year, the game started to give me only two options upon boot: upgrade or exit. Upgrade always failed, so the game would only force me to exit.
Long story short (seriously) , I contacted Gameloft and they told me that HoS is not compatible with the A500. I argued with them about this because 1) the demo comes on the tablet, 2) I bought the game because their website SAID it was compatible at the time, 3) the game used to work, and 4) I contacted Gameloft in the past because I lost the game's download link, and they sent me a link to the A500 version of the game (it even says Acer A500 in the filename) without any problems.
Despite all of this, they continued to tell me that the game is NOT compatible and that I need to check compatibility before I make a purchase (as if I were stupid!).
So, what actually happened is that Gameloft decided that our tablet is no longer good enough for HoS. In addition, when a game update comes out, the game is programmed to FORCE you to update or else you cannot play the game at all. So somewhere along the line, an update was released that made the game incompatible with the A500.
I highly discourage anyone from buying games from Gameloft. A game may work now, but in the future, they may drop your device and you just end up buying something you cannot use. The company is complete $h!+ in not only the quality of their games, but also in their completely unethical business practices. They are more interested in getting your money and less interested in whether or not you are able to continue to use their products in the future.

Im getting the nexus 10 for Christmas and at my high school we can use computers, tablets etc. But are there any good office apps like word or one note type things. Or is there any news of Microsoft apps. Thank you and i pray the light-bleed inst that bad. And is there any news of good keyboard docks?
First, stop listening to people *****ing about light bleed, it's not that big of an issue in the grand scheme of things.
As for office programs, there are half a dozen half decent ones you can buy, one of the guys in the XOOM forum did a pretty in depth review of most of them (I believe it was funnycreature) do a search and have a read of that, then make your choice.
From my experience, you might need to buy more than one to get everything done, this of course can get a little costly with the suits costing £10 or so each.

I don't think that there will be a keyboard dock like you know it from the Asus transformer line. You'll have to use a Bluetooth keyboard. Go to the accessories section. There are some threads about cases. There are also some cases with integrated Bluetooth keyboards.

I'm using CM 10 on the HTC One S and Samsung Galaxy 3 and stock Android on the Nexus 7 & 4. I don't really see a huge difference except for the fact that CM10 has a lot more customization.
If it boiled down to choosing one for a Nexus device, I'd choose stock Android because I dont use most of the customization (unless it's UI stuff, which I can use a launcher for) and I'm not allowed to access my corporate account from the CM 10 device. If I wasn't using a Nexus device, I'd stick with CM 10 to get rid of bloatware.
I'm not sure if that really helps all that much, but that's where things stand for me.
