I don't think so. Because PPTP over 3G does work flawlessly on my SGS II. Maybe it fails for you because it's blocked by your cell provider.

PPTP VPN works fine for me overs 3g. I guess it depends on the carrier (I'm on Orange Romania). Sometimes it fails to connect though - reboot solves it.

Nope pptp works fine on my provider with 3g with my Sgs with froyo but not gingerbread and does not work with my Sgs ii, in fact no one on the Sgs ii forum had got it working, I'm not sure I believe you, are you sure you are usbig a pptp vpn and over 3g and not WiFi.

Any fix for the WIFI yet?

I've narrowed down the long list of problems that i had with my streak but one very annoying is still remaining.
Every few minutes i lose my internet connection and i have to disable WIFI and re-enable it in order to get it back to work. I even did a factory reset but same thing.
I have been reading about this from a lot of users. Has anyone figure out a way to fix this?
Never heard of it, are you sure you don't have a problem with conflicting ip addresses on your network?

No, I'm a network engineer.
If you do a search you will find a lot of posts about this. I surf the net just fine and all of the sudden no internet. Connection is there. The ip is correct, but no internet. Switch wifi on/off and it starts to work again. Very annoying. I suspect it has to do with the signal strength. Is there a fix to boost your wifi performance?
Nope, not had that one here too.
I've never had a problem maintaining a strong and stable WIFI connection with my Streak.

Explain why that is?
It has nothing to do the root. I haven't rooted and I have this issue.

Can not explain, I just try to do so. dell is the time stability of the patch on the wifi.
I made some search. This problem happens only with 802.1x networks (WPA2 Enterprise). It's a problem of Froyo. The bugged file is /system/bin/wpa_supplicant. Some people reported that replacing this file with the one of Android 2.1 solve the problems.
I confirm that I have this problem only with the eduroam network at my university, which is a 802.1x network. No problem for open networks or at home (WPA2 Personnal).
I have had this issue since I got the Streak, even on 1.6. My home network is open - no problem with security issues, I live WAY in the boonies. For some reason, WiFi drops the connection and I get the little networks are available but not connected icon. I disable and re-enable WiFi and it connects back up by itself. Router is a Linksys and the channel is fixed not auto so there shouldn't be channel swapping. Sure is a PIA.

I have the exact same symptoms and I'm also using a Linksys router.
Glad this thread is up. I went as far as replacing my router with a Netgear WNDR3700. I had the problem BEFORE AND AFTER rooting and I've always been on 1.6.
So:
It's not a rooting problem
It's not a router problem
It's not a Froyo problem
Manufacture defect maybe?
router issue
I don't so much have a wi-fi issue as a couple of netgear routers causing a glitch.
I have mine locked down with mac addressing a wpa-psk (tkip) at home and on my wireless router in the shop at work. If I leave, I leave the wi-fi on my phone, I'll grab a free wifi signal around town, and sometimes when I get back to the work or home router, it won't connect until I reboot the router. Even after dumping the profile on the phone, connecting & entering the password again, it won't connect.
Goofy, isn't it?
I have this too on the Dell 2.2 official and on Steve's 1.5 and 1.5.1
I did not have this when I had one of the bug fixs for either UK 2.1 or 1.6. But it is a pain to have to reset the wifi all the time

PPTP VPN broken over 3G

I've run into a problem withe getting the SGS2 to connect to PPTP VPNs over 3G.
I can connect fine via wifi, but if I try connecting via 3G I get the message "Server hung up. Username or password incorrect. Try again?"
I've tried two different sims (T-Mobile Uk and Three) neither of which work but if I try exactly the same thing on my Nexus S using the same SIMs the VPNs connect fine, so I'm pretty confident that it's neither a network nor a Gingerbread issue.
I was hoping this would be something that would be fixed in the latest firmware but no luck there either.
I have dumps of the raw output from the PPTP daemon I'm trying to connect to bith when I'm trying and failing to connect via 3G and when connecting via Wifi if they would help anyone trying to track this down.
-Edit-
Just updated to the new KE2 firmware and no luck there either.
same here posted about this before.. seems a wider google bug.. but my sgs i. works fine
I've seen phones like the ZTE Blade that could't connect to VPNs at all without a firmware update but this is the first time I've encountered on that works over Wifi but not 3G.
Surely it's got to take more effort from Samsung to achieve that than just making it work properly on both
confirmed just tested with k2 firmware.. vpn pptp still not working over 3g.. back to using my sgs i since i need that functionality..
bummer
come one samsung fix. this.. this is unacceptable.. some of use need this vpn funciotnality.. just take the code from the original sgs which works.
Same problem here. I'm on KE2 firmware. I wonder if it has been fixed on KE7....
I'm reluctant to upgrade because I have several apps installed that are not available in the market for the country I'm in right now.
Just tested on k7 still broken.

How does one go about reporting this problem to Samsung? Mine was purchased on the black market in a country where it hasn't been released yet so I don't think I can do anything. Hopefully someone in the UK or South Korea, who purchased this phone from their carrier, can report this problem to their carrier or to Samsung directly.
Here is some information that may help narrow down the problem. The the PPTP connection over 3G is 100% successful when tethering the phone to PC via wifi hotspot.

When you say it was working on the original sgs, which version of Android was it tested on? This might be an issue with Android since 2.2 and not specific to SGS2. Check Issue 11277 on the google code android issue site. I can't post the actual link because I'm a new member.
Same problem my USA sgs2 runnuing lighten v1.3 no VPN over 3G
A found a way to connect to a Cisco IPsec VPN on the SGS2 and it's working on WIFI and 3G. You need to be rooted and download a program called VPN Connections 0.99 from the Softpedia website (I'm not allowed to post the link).
If you need to connect to PPTP over 3G then I'm afraid you are out of luck until Samsung does something about this problem, which they probably won't.
Same problem here.

When did the SGS2 release in USA?
Works on froyo 2.2.1 and earlier firmwares on Sgs. Initial reports are that it indeed doesn't work in gingerbread on the Sgs either.

Yes and yes. I can successfully connect to a PPTP VPN over both wifi and 3g after doing a factory reset on KF1. Before the reset, only wifi was working.
I have checked it and can confirm it does not work over 3g but only over wifi.
Thanks

Like several other issues I've encountered, there's probably little that Samsung can do. As you can see below, other devices with Gingerbread 2.3.3 are seeing the same thing, so most likely a Gingerbread bug:

On my UK 2.2.2 android there is no /system/etc/gps.conf file. Maybe this GPS fix is only for HTC phones.
In MIUI, I have the file in

Wifi problems with 802.11 N + PEAP Authentication
Hi folks!
Here in my university we have a Network called Eduroam (www.eduroam.org , probably you've already heard about it).
The Hotspots are N capable, so my phone, if connected, shows a speed of 65 Mbps. For the authentication, we use MSCHAP v2. So far, so good...
Now to the things I experienced: @ home, where I use a 802.11g network, everything seems to be ok.
Here in the university it's not. Sometimes it needs a really long time to connect to the network, and sometimes it drops the connection just shortly after. Switching off and on again speeds up the process a lot.
But now to the worst part: Often, the connection is shown as established ('Connected'), but in reality there is no connection: No mail connection, no HTTP connection, ping doesn't go through... nothing. Even it shows it is still connected.
Now I am not sure if this issue is caused by the autentication or the N Network , but I can say two things for sure:
1. My laptop, when connected to the same network with the same parameters works fine.
2. It has been working fine up to the transition from Android 2.3.5 to 2.3.7.
I'm running cm7-20111021-NIGHTLY-Milestone2-ICS-pre_stable-v1.5 on a A953, but was also experiencing those issues on builds before that one.
I'd have loved to post this into the developement thread, because I have already seen someone describing a simmilar issue (less detailed unfortunately), but I can't due to the 10 posts minimum rule.
Best regards and thanks for that great port, Endless !

Probably you can try switching off the N network from your phone. Force it to connect through G.

Hi everyone,
yesterday I was it my friend and tried to connect to his access point. He has b/g AP with WPA2 password protection & DHCP enabled. But when I tried to connect it kicked me off in authetication state and tried to connect again - but without success. I tried to disable and enable wifi, deleting saved connection, but nothing of this helped me.
I'm using CM7 - does anyone have similiar or same problem - connecting to WPA2-PSK wifi? I'm using WPA at home and it works ok - I just want know if it is global problem with CM7 on Milestone 2 or just me (or just this AP) and what solutions can i try.
Thanks for suggestions.
I know it is not here but my phone is locked in airplane mode!

I think it's a global problem with Milestone 2, because it didn't work in any Rom, Froyo/CM7/GB/MIUI.

[Q] Upgraded MS2 Froyo to Gingerbread, now Mobile Hotspot doesn't work any more?

Has anyone got Mobile Hotspot to work on their MS2 after the upgrade to Gingerbread?
I've been having problems - Tte MS2 properly assigns an IP address to PCs that try to connect to it over WiFi, but the connection doesn't seem to go past my MS2 to the Internet. Same thing whether USB or WiFi.
I'm on T-mobile on the USA - could that have something to do with it, some kind of authentication is being performed now (that wasn't being performed on Froyo?)
I had this problem too.
Now I use the app "barnacle wifi tether" and it works fine.
I'm from Brazil...

Usb sharing is f*d up - dnsmasq does not launches properly and phone gives no IP in response to dhcp req from pc. I don't remember, if setting an IP and gw manually solves the problem.
However launching _both_ sharing method at once helped. DHCP worked fine. Maybe launching wifi hotspot alone generates similar problem?
Did a factory reset and now Mobile Hotspot works!
Haven't tried USB tethering yet, will report back when I do.
Great! I also had this problem and this tip helped me.
Mobile Hotspot works but haven't got USB tethering to work properly yet. The computer can get an IP address from the phone, but no connection through to the Internet. This is after the factory reset.
Same with me here.. Already did FR but still no go..
Old thread I know but anyone sorted this yet, as its doing my head in, I even changed to a tethering plan in case i was being blocked.
Barnacle Tether doesn't work either same symptoms also says DHCP:Could not bind to DHCP port Address already in use

Could it be your carrier blocking 3G tethering?
Hi
3G tethering is not blocked by carrier as I am on a tethering plan and have spent a long time on the phone to an Indian call centre to sort it.
But joy of joys after trying everything I could think of including re-flashing and wiping all data etc. I have managed to get it working using wifi tether for root user
