Hi I have a PC connect via ethernet to the internet, I would like to connect my phone to the computer so I can broadcast my computers internet connection to my iPad for example. Don't want to use mobile data tethering thanks. I can use either a HTC Hero or Samsung GS2. Is this possible at all? any apps that will let me do this?
I'm not sure if it forces mobile data when hotspot is enabled.
If not, I'd connect the phone to the PC using internet pass through with mobile data disabled and hot spot enabled. I'm unsure if it will use your PC's internet when broadcasting though

Also, I found a similar request here

Its not the greatest help though, but that open garden app still does something I guess

You want your computer to be a Wi-Fi router? Try Connectify. You will need a Wi-Fi card to make it work.

I'm also looking for the same kind of thing...but couldnt find any..
The series is like Computer(with internet) >> Phone(Getting internet via "Internet Pass Through") >> Broadcasting that internet using WifiHotspot
Is that possible?

If your computer has a Wi-Fi card/builtin, you can use something like Connectify to turn your computer into a hotspot.
When you say wifi card thats the same thing as a wireless card?If yes then I can use my laptop as a hotspot?how do I do that exactly. Thanks

Like a PCI card or it's built into all laptops built in the last ten years.
If I had a wireless card..I wouldnt even bother about getting a phone with "Internet Pass Through"
What I am asking is "A Desktop without a wifi card but has a wired internet connection needs to provide internet to a laptop"
What are we having with us? - A Phone with "Internet Pass Through" enabled
A Desktop (With no WIFI card)
A Laptop (With a WIFI card ofcourse)

Laptop would work. It has built-in Wi-Fi and probably a 10/100[/1000] ethernet port.

You still don't understand mate...
What I meant to say is
PC is WIRED with broadband connection...It is passed to the phone using Internet Pass Through...
Now THE GOLDEN QUESTION IS HOW TO BROADCAST THIS INTERNET(that is present in the phone through IPT) USING ANY HOTSPOT APP!
?

follow this reverse tethering guide (i've tested this one and it's working):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345
and when it's done... try and activate the wifi hotpot feature of your android phone.

Oh gotcha. Sounds like you got an answer above but if that doesn't work, hook your phone up to the laptop and use an app like Connectify on that laptop. Sorry I didn't understand.

Alright i been trying to decide between transformer and nexus 7. I just spent the last hour trying to transfer a video file from my galaxy s3 to the transformer. I have yet to be able to do so, i used an app called wifi shoot and was able to transfer to the N7 but since there is no Wi-Fi direct on the transformer jelly bean update does anyone have an alternative?
But not looking for FTP servers.

I would suggest to try free variants like Swift FTP server. Have been using it from the beginning of my android adventure, works flawlessly
Use a FTP client like FileZilla to configure the device. Assign manual IPs for each of your android devices in your router and save as different devices in FileZilla, click and connect over WiFi.
The transfer speed is limited only by your WiFi connection speed.
This is one of the free software alternatives

That won't work while i'm on the go and don't have access to WiFi. Was in the car with both tablets and needed to transfer a file from my phone to the tablets and with WiFi-Direct and WiFi Shoot it was a snap and the file was transferred within a minute on the Nexus 7, I have yet to do this on the Transformer do to the lack of WiFi Direct.
Why in the world would Asus REMOVE WiFi Direct in the JB update?
I don't want to start FTP server on the phone and share a hotspot etc WiFi Direct with WiFi Shoot was so simple and effective.
Anyway to add it back without flashing CM9/10?
@nooktablet
will have to try that and hopefully it works.

sorry but it won't work, because you still need a wifi hotspot to make it work, and you said you're in a car you don't have wifi hotspot,
basically either FTP or Wifi transfer pro or any WiFi transfer method still requires you to have a wifi hotspot to work, this wifi hotspot is where the 2 devices can transfer files, this wifi hotspot does NOT need internet connection, so even if your wifi hotspot can't go to internet, you can still use it to transfer files.
so what's the solution? use your android to create a virtual wifi hotspot? how? i don't know . on computer i usually use connectify. i believe on android there should be a way to do it.
hopefully you understood what i meant, 'cause i'm not good at explaining

that is the most likely app that works similar to wifi direct and wifi shoot.
@Others
I can create a wifi hotspot with the s3 and did that while in the car for internet on the tablet. Its just I don't want to create a hotspot then start a FTP server every time i need to transfer a file on the go or carry cables. If i ever take my tablet on the go its mainly to watch videos or play games but not for browsing the web so it that sense wifi direct was such a simple way to transfer files.
Bluetooth file transfer might have to do until the JB bootloaders security are beaten and i can install CM9/10.
EDIT:
Using bluetooth file transfer and trying to transfer a 300MB avi will take at least 15 minutes which is extremely slow, god i hate why they removed features. I wish i could install CM, anyone have any idea if that will be possible in the near future or are we in for a long wait?

in case you are still interested in options of sharing thru wi-fi or wi-fi direct, please check out my app "PeerDeviceNet" which does exactly that and more. it supports android2.2+, allowing sharing web pages, contacts, photos videos and other docs. in my own tests, i tried to send 2G file successfully. it has been on google market for a while. unfortunately i cannot post the link here (too new to post external links). you can find the links at my web site: peerdevicenet.net , or search for it at google play.
hope it helps.

I use WiFi File Explorer
Looks and feels ez.
For phone/tablet i just make hotspot with wifi tether for rooted users from phone.

Have you tried the app X-Link? Does what you need (File transfers via wifi network across devices).
these are all great suggestions but all require the devices to be on the same network. So this will not work if i'm sitting on train or something which is why wifi direct was so easy and did not require devices to be connected to a wifi network.
I know i can still do this and use any of the above apps using wifi hotspot and will try them out.

PeerDeviceNet works over wifi direct without requiring external wifi net. it works with wifi net with the same ease. And it is free app. Give it a try.

Probably with some hacking but I don't think it's possible as of now. Your only optionsare WiFi and mobile data.

Well if you have a laptop or a desktop with a Wi-Fi adapter, you can try this method: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/38835-42-create-virtual-wifi-router-internet-windows
I used it with this Wi-Fi adapter and it works just great.
Hi guys,
The other day my Ethernet cable plugging my desktop PC into the router broke, meaning I now have no internet access on my PC.
I was wondering if there was some way to plug my phone in via USB, and use my phones WiFi signal to access internet on the computer.
Any one know how this can be done?
Thanks.

Yes, it's straight forward enough.
Connect your phone to your WiFi network
Hook up your USB
Then go to Settings > more > tethering & portable hotspot and tick USB tethering

I tried that and it wouldn't let me enable it - could it be a problem with the ROM? Miui v5

If you have wifi from the place where you are at, just select that same wifi name on your pc's wifi setup. No need to tether with phone, right? Am I missing some other details from you?
