[shareing]fix gps not working problem - Omnia 7 General

someone may have the same problem as mine. omnia's gps not working.
Here is the solution I found from microsoft answers.
Please try a variation of the reboot process, which is to remove your battery and leave it out for about 5-10 minutes. On at least old systems, resetting the GPS chipset was best accomplished by pulling the battery.

GPS on X1a not working at all

Dear xda-developers members,
[skip the first paragraph to avoid useless chitchat]
I usually avoid posting in forums when I can't contribute to the soultion of a problem but rather ask questions. This is mostly due to me feeling stupid years on when I stumble upon my then pressing problems. Anyway:
I'm having problems with my X1, more specifically the GPS receiver. I know users have reported problems before, so I don't seem to be alone after all. Let's start out with a
Description of the problem:
No software I tried so far gets anywhere near to a fix using GPS. Google Maps reports it's searching but won't find anything, Chartcross "GPS Test" hangs on "Starting up GPS", TurboGPS sometimes displays a satellite in the very center and finally there's the "HTC GPS tool" which shows this:
The "satellites" change in rather fast succession. This can't be right, can it? So far I have not gotten any fix at all. This was the case from the very beginning (got it off ebay by the way, said to be used for about 2 months). The HTC Tool as well as TurboGPS echo some seemingly gibberish data ("$GPGSV,4,1,16,32,,,,31,,,,30,,,,29,,,*70" and counting down, less often "$GPVTG,,T,,M,,N,,K,N*2C" and things like that).
What I tried so far:
I tried multiple ROMs (R2A stock, R1A stock, 6.5 based, 6.1 based, very light ones, very heavy ones), basically all available Radio ROMs and yes, I switched off AGPS, I tried activating Bluetooth, not touching the backside as proposed by some, etc. It appears to be the X1a Version of the phone, if that is any help. COM-Ports have been switched, windows management of the device has been checked and unchecked, the baud rate has been changed to multiple values. Nothing.
I'd gladly supply you with any further information that might by useful. I think I don't need to stress how excruciatingly annoying this behaviour is. Exchanging the device is not really an option since a) I'll be in Canada in 17 days and I doubt my local dealer could fix this in the given time frame and b) I don't have the receipt - ebay, you see.
Best regards in hope of a solution...
do you try inside or outside ?
gps's generaly never get a signal inside
Nice one, but believe me, I tried outside. I tried on roofs. I tried in the streets. I tried with loads of free sky above my head. My stand alone GPS reciever (Garmin Geko 201) picks up many (at least 5) satellites in less than one minute.
@Tikurion
"The HTC Tool as well as TurboGPS echo some seemingly gibberish data ("$GPGSV,4,1,16,32,,,,31,,,,30,,,,29,,,*70" and counting down, less often "$GPVTG,,T,,M,,N,,K,N*2C" and things like that)"
Not gibberish actually, but NMEA GPS data flows, so your receiver is aquiring some data. Google NMEA if you want to understand these data sentences better.
No fix ? I have only 2 suggestions here;
1) try on hard reset with no AGPS (of course), updated QuickGPS data and a clear outdoors "line of sight"
2) the more recent radio ROM's (eg 1.11.25.76 or 1.14.25.55) do give very quick and accurate fixes if conditions in 1) above are there
ianl8888: I said seemingly, right ? What I meant was: I know it's not actually gibberish. But how do you explain me receiving the exact same values even if I'm in a cellar with absolutely no possibility of receiving anything?
I will yet again try another hard reset, although this then would be number... 15 I believe XD. AGPS is turned off already and radio rom is 1.14.25.55 at the moment. We'll see.
Thank you so far of course. Your help's always invaluable .
I dunno if it helps or not, but i had a similar problem. I found that no software could actually get a gps signal from the unit...it was like the software wasn't actually able to control/turn on the gps or something. the weird thing was that i noticed the "on the road" panel was able to get data. So, i tried running TT6 with the on the road panel running, and it worked. so then i launched google with on the road panel working, and it worked. to this day, if i want to run a gps dependent software, i must start on the road panel first. kind of weird but it works. I'm waiting for R3 to see if the problem goes away or not.
Ian
I tried what ianl8888 suggested multiple times - to no avail.
Also completelyhis: Thanks, but the On-the-Road Panel doesn't pick up anything either. Won't change status after "Determining current location".

Looks like warranty time - seems your GPS antenna may be disconnected (poor or dry solder joint) ??
Unhappily, a not all that infrequent issue with PDA's. I once spent several weeks figuring out how to dis-assemble an Eten X500, re-solder the offending joint and then re-assemble the thing. It was way out of warranty, of course.
my problem with touch HD is similar... all sats bunched on top..
i went for servicing
Well, after temporarily bricking my X1 (tried to reinstall original SPL for service the wrong way) and solving that by using the Service Updater-thingie I sent to support, hoping they will be nice with me, despite not sending the warranty card or the receipt.
Use A-GPS .. for me it even worked inside my house... ( no my house is not a box of 50cm by 50cm.. but one big farm

GPS freezing problems

Has anyone encountered similar symptoms I've getting. I was using Garmin Mobile XT in california about a month ago and the phone was on the dashboard getting really hot from all the sun. but I didn't pay too much attention to it. Now I think my GPS radio is heat sensative. if the unit it getting warm (even brightness on full indoors), it might freeze and restart, but if I do anything that touches the GPS (google maps, garmin, geotagging) I have to do the steps with the utmost care as to not go through the menus too fast. even on fresh boot (phone was off), if I go into Garmin too quickly the phone will restart or just stay stuck on the white HTC screen (which is resolved by removing battery and leaving it out for 30 secs or so). if the phone is warm, the GPS unit will almost always freeze and restart. googles maps has use GPS settings but I can't turn it off anymore as the phone always restarts before I can untick that.
the only really way to determine if it is in fact the GPS radio is to somehow disable the radio permanently and see if it continues to freeze. but it HAS restarted when doing none GPS related tasks (this occurs if the unit is warmed up via high brightness or being in a warm climate) such as mp3 playing and such.
anyone? going to try yet another rom and hopefully that helps
Anytime I use any program that uses my GPS the phone freezes and restarts.. I can't even use it.. I have done a hard reset and everything the phone still has the same problem... any advice??
hi,
i also have problem with gps. As i use a non htc car charger during navigation, sometimes my hd2 gets real hot and the navigation programm lost gps fix. Sometimes my device restarts automatically.
Now i lost the gps fix when using a navagation programm sometimes after 5 minutes, but max. 30 minutes the gps fix is gone. So i have to make a soft reset to get a gps fix again. Navigation programm restart doesn't help.
How can i check if the gps modul is ok or not?
thanks

Have you run the same programs and situation, but only with the power connector not plugged in?
the freezes and restarts are under tomtom and igo my way, when the car charger is plugged in, but only sometimes.
But now also without the car charger is plugged in, i also lost gps fix with igo. The longest time without loosing gps fix is about 30 minutes. I made a trip about 60 minutes with tomtom still got gps fix?!
Strange is also that if the device lost gps fix under iGO, i have to make a soft reset to get the gps works again.

You need to make sure that nothing else is in communication with your GPS, ie having TomTom GoogleMaps running at the same time.
Silly question but why have TomTom and iGo installed?

Bad news!
From my experience this is just the beginning of the worst thing: overheating problems of CPU related to BGA balls=a future non-working device with only 1 solution, another motherboard!
Can you reflow the motherboard, the oven method, did anyone did it before?

i think your right !!
I have a hd2 with this problem
it's a nand pb, no other solution than another motherboard
or use it in north Pole (or in a fridge ^^)
I also had this problem and the solution was a new phone. CPU overheats and phone freezes or reboots. It is a design flaw that is also present in the first Google phone.
This occurs mostly when using a GPS guidance software, that keeps the screen on and you may also have to keep your phone connected to the charger, thus enormous amounts of heat is generated.
You'll see that if you only use a simple GPS test app for hours you won't have a problem. So it is not the fault of the GPS unit.
Another way to see that your phone is bad is by keeping it recording a video at maximum quality from camera, while keeping the phone plugged to the charger. Somewhere between 20minutes and 60minutes (depending on ambient temperature), your phone will freeze.
And another way to check this is to call another phone and leave it on a table face up so the screen won't shut off for 1h-2h. Heat will build up and the phone will freeze. Guaranteed.

There is a thread dedicated to this subject (OP by facdemol), but results are really unpredictable (sometimes good, sometimes bad).
I will try to underclock the cpu , with setcpu to max 700Mhz, I hope with this i will have less heat.
this is the best method, undervolt and underclock the cpu to something like 800mhz.
apple underclocked their processors in the iphone for lower heat output and better battery life.
it is possible to do the same to the hd2, dropping couple hundred mhz will allow for a failry lower operating voltage to be applied and a large reduction i heat output.
or better yet setup a power profile for gps app usage where clockspeed is locked to something like 700mhz when running tomtom.
I used setcpu to do the underclock, is there a option to do it throuh HyperDroid-CM7-v5.8.0[a2sd][CyanogenMod7 LEO 2.3.7][seader_R9] i am using? the max option is only 998Mhz and above, can i do something to see other speeds to?
I have a similar problem with my HD2 / GPS.
It will sometimes pull a GPS location, but then quickly looses the GPS fix.
Right now I have ICS running, but had the same issue with Win 6.5, Win 7, and Gingerbread(s).
Does anyone have a recommendation on a good app to get base data from the GPS.
Thanks,

[Q] GPS freezes phone (w osmand,maverick)

Hello wise xda guys.
Any ideas why my hd2 freezes after some time, when I use gps with osmand or maverick (or a couple of other software I tried before and unistall). It freezes completely, and I have to remove the battery. While it is working (before freezing) everything works fine.
[Another symptom (maybe irelevant) is the very slow gps fix (the first time), which deosn't really bothers me (I'm a patient person). I'm just writing it here because maybe there is a relation]
I use: Froyo 2.2.1, mod: Cleandroid 2.55, MAGLDR 1.13.
Otherwise the telephone is more or less stable
thnx
Same issue it seems...
Going to re-flash WinMo and test there.
I'm having the exact same issue lately and it is not funny/safe at all.
I first had it happening in google navigation all the time and now in iGO and Waze.
Can this be from Rafpigna's undervoltaged kernel or be a hardware issue?
Unfortunately the device freezes completely and doesn't give any error.
Does a log exist somewhere?
Any help is more than appreciated!
Yeap, still the same problem and I can't figure out why.
I've tried more than 10 different apps, but allways the same. After some time the phone freezes. I remove the battery, start the app and after a while, the same.
I tried working with battery only or with car charger only, still the same.
I removed and brought back all my apps with titanium backup, still the same.
I have a suspicion that when it stacks and after rebooting, if I leave it in peace (I mean don't do anything with the phone, just keep it without running any app), for some time (10-20 minutes), then it starts and keeps the gps app more time, than the time of the initial freezing. Maybe this is a symptom that could ring a bell to an experienced guy...
Anybody, any ideas?
I think mine is related to heat.
Left it in my pouch and placed iGO in demo on a long roadtrip. After 15 minutes the phone was warm and the screen was frozen so I had to get the batt out again.
More than frustrating since I have a 700km trip to do on Thursday.
Not sure about the heat
I had the same suspicion, that the heat was causing the freezing ) funny language ah?).
So I tested it while keeping it cool (I protect it from the sun and remove the car charger), but still the same happened. After some time it froze again. (the phone was cold)
I have a suspicion that a possible reason is the rendering of the maps. I've noticed that I have the problem, mainly when driving a car, where the maps images should change more often. I kept it in my pocket and made a few hours trekking, with no problems. Though in my pocket I had the app running in the background and I only open it a few times, just to add some points on the map.

There is also this thread, by Crash-nl, with the same subject (more or less) so we can combine powers.

I'm also having GPS freezing issues, but probably way worse than you guys. I just got my phone from service center, but the issue still exists. I just quote my comments from an another topic:
I've now got back my HD2 from the service center. The GPS is now working, but not in Android. When I was using WinMo 6.5 with WWE 3.14 and 2.15.50.14, the GPS worked great. Fast lock, TomTom worked well and Google Maps worked fine. Then I decided to get Android again and after I installed everything, I discovered, that I had the same exact issue like prior the repair. The GPS starts looking the signal, if it doesn't find it, nothing bad happens, but when it does find the signal, it causes the phone to freeze. Instantly after the signal is found, it causes instant freeze. Screen stays on, nothing happens. What can cause this? I haven't yet tampered with the gps.conf settings, but I don't even think that it could fix the issue. I'm really going crazy with this.
Yeah, I'm thinking also its a driver issue. My current Android build is RAFDROID 4.0.2. And since this issue seems to be exatly the same, like before the repair, the GPS probably doesn't work in the earlier versions of RAFDROID. However something has changed in my phone, because the GPS has worked with nand Android builds in the past and even with RAFDROID 3.0. Now however, it doesn't matter which build I use, the issue always exists. Could it be caused because of the GPS module? I mean, does the WinMo 6.5 QuickGPS app save the AGPS data directly to the GPS module? So could there be some kind of corruption in the GPS module? I was having some sudden reboots, while using Google Maps and TomTom in the WinMo, but I was able to fix them, by hard resetting the device.
First time I started having this issue was, when I updated from RAFDROID 3.0 to 3.1. After that, the GPS has always caused instant freezing, when using GPS in the Android. Even downgrading back to 3.0, didn't solve the issue. Now I'm having this issue with all Android builds.
It's possible that my GPS module or "chip" could be somehow broken physically, but it's no point sending the device back for repair, because they send it back and say, "there's nothig wrong with the GPS". I'm really hoping it's not a hardware issue, because if it is, there's really nothing that can be done. I have still about a year left from the warranty and changing the module myself, will void the warranty. I just cannot understand why does the GPS still work in WinMo, but not in Android? Because if the module was somehow broken, should the GPS be defective also in WinMo?
I have tried flight mode, Wifi and 3G off etc. and the GPS DOES WORK. So the chip is not dead.
Just did some more testing on mine to try to find the issue.
I have always had a freez when I used google navigation with the sat image from the start in Android. But last week it happened in iGO and Waze which scared me a bit.
As a matter of test I installed WinMo again last night. Fantastic OS btw! and installed iGO.
Everything was up and running at 2am and I decided to let it do a demotrip of about a 1000km. The demo also sets the GPS receiver active.
I placed the HD2 it next to the fan of my laptop which is always on to generate some extra heat.
This morning at 10am the demo was still running perfectly.
Just reinstalled Android on it again. After 3km's in iGO 'gps signal lost' . I cannot get it back in any way. The GPS symbol is stuck in the bar above even if you disable GPS in the settings. So reboot is the only way.
This is getting very frustrating for me since my phone needs to work as GPS and may not fail.
Also a funny one is that it doesn't seem to matter on mine if the gps.conf file is on there or not ;-) lock time when the hd2 works is approx 1min

I'm having this same exact issue! However I just discovered that the local service center did not change the GPS module or antenna. So this might be the reason why my GPS doesn't work. The service center was fooled that the GPS works, because they didn't test the GPS thoroughly. YOU HAVE TO ENABLE FLIGHT MODE OR TAKE THE SIM CARD AWAY TO TEST THE GPS!. If you don't do this, you are being fooled believing, that your GPS is working, but it's not.
You guys should test your GPS, by going back to WinMo 6.5 and leave your sim card away from the phone. If your GPS can find the signal even without the sim card, congrats, your GPS is working. If you want to be double sure, enable flight mode and try again. If your GPS cannot find signal, your GPS module and/or antenna is broken and needs to be replaced.
Well my module is working.
Easy way to test it and no need to take out your sim or so.
Just use the cab file attached to this post. If you will start it the first time it will scan the ports so you can end up with a small error in regards to BT but it not a real error.
The tool will continue to com port 4 where the gps mod is active on.
Go stand outside and voila, mine starts to show bars like it should be.
I'm taking a different approach now.
Ckeared everything and also took a fully fresh formated sd-card .... (as I type now not working)

Thanks! You just saved my time a lot! I downloaded and installed that app and I was able to get a succesfull GPS connection and now I can even get GPS lock, when flight mode enabled or sim card removed. This was impossible before installing this app.
However it seems that we are both suffering from the same issue. GPS does not work for me in Android. It has worked in the past, but nowadays, it doesn't matter, which Android build I use, it either freezes the phone and only way to fix this, is by removing the battery or it doesn't find the signal at all. Sometimes the GPS stays on, even if I turn it off. The blinking GPS icon goes away only by restarting the device.
If you are using gps navigation software on sd card, try format micro sd card with FAT32 and DEFAULT ALLOCATION SIZE option, do not choose allocation size such as 32,64 or any other except DEFAULT.
Try it and GL.

Hi. I had the same problem, i try everything formating sd, different builds and kernels. I disable "use wireless networks" and GPS work with no freeze.
Do you have a freezes on games?
did any one found the answer ?
is it a hardware problem ?
or a software ?
Thought I'd throw in that I'm having the same problem running hyperdroid rom on a telstra hd2. GPS finds a lock, works for about 2 mins then freezes requiring battery to be taken out to restart. I'm leaning away from a hardware issue as copilot worked perfectly on the same phone when I was running windows 6.5...

Same issue here, I'm starting to think hardware issue, did you find a fix?
I had the same problem and I tried everything, different ROMs, different programs, to no avail.
It probably is a hardware issue. The GPS connectors inside the phone do not make contact with the GPS antenna on the backplate. Open the phone and raise the connectors a little, very gently, so you don't break them. Before closing it, put a tiny paper under the connectors, so it won't happen again. It's not very easy, but not too hard either.
Thanks
I ordered a phone repair kit (small screw driver etc) yesterday as I suspected the same. I'm going to open her up when it arrives, I'll let you know what I find.

I'll take another peek tonight
Just opened it up again, give them a good extend but the issue remains. I think I'm a special case though, I got mine from Hong Kong (sent to UK) and then through a custom ROM Modem/Bootloader on without testing anything - idiot. So after further reading I think my issue may be related to CSC stuff, although I'm not sure exactly what that means yet - I'll keep reading.
Cheers for prompt reply.

Hello, I had the same issue when running android 5.1
It was after waiting a long time to get some good gps lock. Assuming it was an hardware problem I also checked out the 'pin' issue.
But amazingly, when flashing a android 4.4.4 rom, the gps is now awesome!
It now has almost instant lock everytime and I use it all the time for tracking my running and cycling. So I noticed the difference quickly between android 4 and 5 with the gps. It's like there's a big software bug in the 5 version.
Thanks choko, the one good thing I did before the flash was take a picture of all the info in "about phone" and a full backup including efs etc, so one of my steps when I have more time is a full roll back to stock (4.4.4).
Just need to locate the stock bootloader and modem for my "special" Hong Kong device.
Cheers all

I couldn't get a GPS connection on my Note 3 and was about to take it apart when I came across GPS Status Test and Fix I ran it and then everything was sorted! I've just bought a Note 4 and thankfully the GPS worked first time (I'm on MM now)
Thanks wold
I tried that and clicked the buttons at the bottom and it just varied between 0/19 and 0/24, not sure if that means my phone is "seeing" the sats but just not locking or what.
Feel so close to a fix yet so far away as I've tried everything apart from a CSC reset thing I read elsewhere. But that formats your phone so waiting for when I have more time.
Cheers all
R
Okay all - tried flashing back to my original backup from when it was new but it got stuck in reboot loop. I found the exact firmware online that came with my phone, flash it including modem etc and the phone booted as new, no warning sign it had been rooted or any recovery's installed. Even got offered some security updates once I'd logged in. Even after all that and comparing my ABOUT PHONE info to my original screenshot and confirming they all matched exact, I still have the same problem.
Some times when it's broke, I guess it's just damn broke!
Good luck with your journey's my friends, may the odds be forever in your favor.
This solution is the one that finally fixed the GPS on my Note 4 (currently on Android 5.1.1).
I had tried all the other options I could find on the internet (clearing cache, removing SD card, removing/reinserting SIM, calibrating compass, changing location modes, clearing AGPS data, etc., etc., etc.). None of them helped. Powering down, removing the back, then removing all the screws (about a dozen I think), then twisting the case gently several times in a "hand wringing" motion, followed by pushing firmly around the back to reseat anything that may have come loose inside (I did get a satisfying click of something snapping back together around the camera area), and then reassembling everything finally fixed the problem.
I now get a GPS fix in 3-4 seconds while inside on the main floor of a two story home. I get a signal-to-noise ratio that ranges between 15 and 30 and typically get a fix on around 10 satellites now (while indoors). Outdoors the performance is outstanding; the SNR is even better and the time to fix is nearly instantaneous. Before the fix I was lucky if it even got a fix on 3 or 4 satellites and it would often take several minutes, if ever.
I use GPS Test by Chartcross Limited to confirm satellite signal-to-noise ratio and time to first fix. I used to use GPS Status & Toolbox, but I prefer the GPS Test GUI and it has many of the same functions (including clearing and updating AGPS data). Incidentally, before the fix if I cleared the AGPS data I was lucky if I ever got a fix indoors; usually I had to go outdoors and wait many minutes to get the first fix. Now, I will get a fix while inside within 15 seconds after clearing AGPS data.
My Note 4 is like new again. And, as an added bonus, my battery life seems to have improved immensely. I suspect that the poor satellite reception made the GPS run nearly full time trying to get a fix. Now it seems to have dramatically reduced the battery drain required to run the GPS. I suspect that many of the reports of poor battery life are actually Note 4's that have poor GPS satellite reception problems.

Have problem with GPS. It never can find satellites, even under clear sky. "GPS Test" application always show many "In view" satellite and zero "In use" satellites.
Changing android version (even CM) doesn't help.
Anyone help! How to fix this problem?

GPS Antenna issue?

Hi All,
So I have an issue with my S5's GPS... I now suspect it is due to the antenna however would like some feedback and assistance.
I downloaded the "GPS Status" app to try and trobuleshoot a bit. When I open the app with my location on and set to any of the 3 accuracies (GPS only, Power Saving, High Accuracy) and very quickly it manages to find satellites, at the moment 26 of them.
However it is unable to connect / fix to any of them, so it is displaying 0/26.
So since it is finding the satellites but unable to fix/ connect to them I am hoping that my GPS chip is still fine but the antenna is the issue - what do you think?
If you think it is the antenna, how can I go about fixing it? Is there somewhere I can open up the phone and resit a ribbon or connector or anything of that sort? If so please can you assist me with how to go about doing this.
Thanks!
Psy
I use this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest&hl=en_GB
atm, I have 25 in view, 10 in use, 3D fix, accuracy 33ft, while I'm sitting in the house
Which ROM are you running?
Alright, so I managed to get it working, I am running the stock Marshmallow ROM BTW.
What I did was remove the AGPS data and then boot into recovery and wipe the cache. Went out side and it started to connect and has been working fine since! Luckily ^^ Quite strange, not sure what happened there?
Nice one, yea it didn't sound like hardware, seeing the sats showed the antenna/GPS chip were fine
Probably just something corrupted, clearing caches is always a good first step to take troubleshooting
For all who have a hardware issue with the S5 that can't be solved by any software tricks, I posted my solution in a S5 Mini thread:
[Q] GPS Issue
Hello all, After 2 week I bought my G800H, the GPS star to take too long to get GPS Signal. Some times more than 10 minutes Even with 3G (H+) working well and the configuration in "High accuracy". Other thing that happens is the GPS...
