[Q] Noob here, need help overclocking, running CM7 off SD card - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I read the Dalingrin's OC kernel thread, but its still not very clear how I go about installing kernel to overclock my NK.
Any help and tips are truly appreciated. Again I'm a complete NOOB.
I read the threads learned how to install CM7 using size-agnostic installer and installed Gapps successfully.
Now I'm stuck can't figure out how to install Dalingrin's OC kernel for SD card. I identified which version I need for my NK using SD card, but can't figure out what to do next.
HELP!!!!

If you're using verygreen's agnostic SD install for your CM7 SD, all you need to do to update to the OC kernel is drop the zip into the boot directory and boot into restore to install it, just like updating to a newer nightly.

Houston we have a problem, I keep trying to boot into recovery mode, but for some reason it's not working.
I have read several threads to figure out how to, but its not working.
I followed the Size Agnostic tip: holding power and N button simultaneously until Loading...comes up, letting go of power button, and unpressed power button again until loading comes up again, and then unpressed power button and unpressed N button when Loading...disappeared. COULD NOT GET ME INTO RECOVERY MODE, TRIED SEVERAL TIMES.
I tried selecting reboot from CM7 desktop and selected reboot into Recovery Mode. DID NOT WORK EITHER.
I tried other methods listed on the size agnostic forum, still a no go.
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME!!!! I want to be able to OVERCLOCK MY NC.

I haven't followed up on verygreen's SD image in a while since switching to EMMC, but you might want to check if he added fattire's boot select menu which would indicate very clearly if you've successfully entered recovery.
The power + n can be tricky -- verygreen also fixed an issue recently where it would boot into a blank screen when attempting to boot into recovery after flashing a new nightly (or OC kernel). The booting into recovery from CM7 desktop does not work (stated by VG himself, unless he's fixed it in a recent update) for this SD install.

noob here, HELP can't boot into Recovery Mode

I have reviewed several threads and tips on here to help me with this issue to no avail.
I am running CM7 from SD card. I used verygreen's Size Agnostic installer to get everything running on my NK.
Now I'm trying to install Dalingrin's OC Kernel to overclock my NK, but can't get into recovery mode so that the size agnostic installer runs the zip file.
Am I doing something wrong??
I've tried some of Power & N button suggestions on forums, tried selecting reboot into recovery mode from CM7 desktop, and tried selecting reboot into recovery mode from ROM manager. It reboots without entering recovery mode.
HELP!! any suggestions are truly appreciated.

You can burn cwr to another sd card for getting into recovery and switch the two once you are in. Maybe not the best option, but an option.

I don't know verygreen's size agnostic installer - where is CWM installed? Was CWM installed via Rom Manager?

how would CWR work if I want to make sure it doesn't flash emmc and installs on SD card?
Thanks for reply!

I'm running CM7 of my SD card using verygreen's size agnostic installer. I'm not using CWM, used the installer to install CM7 and Google Apps.
I'm trying to install Dalingrin's OC Kerner to SD card to overclock my NK, but for somereason I can't get my NK into Recovery mode to get SAI to install zip file.
Is CWM for EMMC roots?
there are OC kernels for internal and SD. You`ll need to use the search function to ensure you find the right one.

Problem solved, could finally get into recovery mode.
I just went back and performed clean install using the nightly build 102 and was able to get into recovery mode with no problems.
The stable build was not working for me. I was able to now install gapps and Dalingrin's OC Kernel on my NK.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS!!

CM7 to SD Card Update Issues

I followed [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards and got to the installation of GApps. When I reboot the nook into recovery, it doesn't work(both through the key button combos and through the reboot into recovery option once its booted up)
Has anyone else had this issue? I've tried it several times and even with the OC kernels I can never get it into recovery.
Sorry i would have posted this in the dev section but I am fairly new.
Thanks,
extremepizza
If all else fails add a boot menu. It couldn't hurt anything.
Open the attached file and copy the uboot.bin onto the boot partition of your sd card AFTER BACKING UP THE UBOOT FILE THAT YOU FIND THERE. You will now have a boot menu that will let you choose to boot sd to recovery. It will be overwritten any time you flash but you can always reinstall it AFTER BACKING UP THE FILE ALREADY ON THE CARD. After you're done installing you can either leave the menu uboot in place or replace it with the original file that you backed up. So far it hasn't caused me any problems during installations.
Thanks j4mm3r for the super handy piece of code.

I frequently have the same issue. The combination and timing that I found to work most of the time is below. This is when first using the CM7 SDCard image. If your device already boots with the green CM logo then this doesn't apply.
Press and hold the 'n' key
Press and hold the power key
Wait for Loading... to appear (or whatever it says in your version)
Count to 3 and release the power key
Count to 3 and release the 'n' key
Wait for the Linux Penguin to appear

Maybe you can help me out with this:
I am using the boot menu program.
My NC currently has 7.0.3-encore-signed and I tried to do an update to one of the newer nightlies.
I placed the cm zip file in the boot directory on the sd card and then on the boot menu selected sd and recovery but all it does is hang. Am I doing something wrong? I really would like to update to the new 7.1.0-RC1-encore-signed.
What i found out was that the installer v1.3 has an issue when using the 7.0.3 stable release. I instead restarted the process but installed the latest nightly and now i can use recovery fine to install gapps and newer nightlies.
Thanks for the help though.
If you need to install gapps, just put the gapps file with the Rom image and it will be install at the same time. you don't need to boot into recovery again. Btw, Im using the installer v1.3 and 7.0.3 stable release after a long time playing with nightly builds. Since 136 build, it can't boot from sdcard anymore.

[Q] nook Color 1.4.2

I just charged up my nook recently and then checked it out. It self updated to 1.4.2. I think I last ran a manual nooter on 1.2. In the upgrade they broke my zeam launcher and I can't seem to get back to my apps that were installed. i.e. to do a backup.
Is there anyway I can run a backup now that it's has 1.4.2 on it?
Just re-root and you should be all set. GMPOWER's made rooting 1.4.2 trivial.
Problem Updating to 1.4.2
I cannot manually update to 1.4.2. I have previously updated to 1.3.0 and to 1.4.1.
After I send the nookcolor_1_4_2_update.zip to my NC from my XP computer, the update starts to load. A box with an arrow appears with an android 'andy' and a green progress strip.
Then it stops and a white triangle with a yellow exclamation symbol appears next to 'andy',. Nothing else happens.
If I press the power button, clockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1 appears with a menu of options.
I have never rooted or attempted an internal cm7 mod, but I occasionally use a cm7 sdcard.
I called B&N support and they say the triangle and 'Andy shouldn't happen.
It appears to me that clockworkmod revovery has somehow been installed on my NC internal operating system.
I would like to be able to receive additional NC updates.
My questions are:
1. Can I safely remove the clockworkmod recovery and then update my NC?
2. Is there a benefit to keeping the clockworkmod recovery that will outweigh the loss of future NC updates?
Thanks for your inputs.
1. Yes, you can safely remove CWM and then update.
2. I personally install CWM as Alt Boot, install CyanoBoot to get the Power & Vol +/- access as well as boot menut to use recovery to factory reset via eMMC Recovery mode if wanted.
I have put together a CWM installable zip of stock 1.4.1 as well as some others.. and instructions on how to do it and files to put into stock ROM.... See this thread for instructions on doing it yourself.
I am a bit luckier but still could not get the 1.4.2 installed. Mine is running 1.2. I also use uSD for CM7/CM9 booting. When I tried to update the Nook Color to 1.4.2 by putting the zip file into Nook through USB connection. Nothing would happen and the zip file will be gone. I also have problem in installing apps in Nook native boot. I really think something has been changed in NC even I use solely uSD method for CM7/CM9 booting.

Since you have CWM installed on the device, you have a couple options:
You can download this file, LINK, boot into CWM, and flash the file to remove CWM from your device. You can then update the device using the stock method.
OR you can download this file,LINK,boot into CWM, and flash the file to update the device to version 1.4.2. This method will keep CWM installed on the device. If you no longer want CWM installed on the device after updateing, download this file, LINK, and flash it to remove CWM.
Keeping CWM installed on the device, will keep it from updating, and make it easier to flash/backup your system

Not offending by any mean but do you make sure you understand the whole thing?
First question, why you even mentioned about "uSD for CM7/CM9"? You are running CM or stock ROM?
Next, after xfering the 1.4.2, did you boot from uSD and running CM?
Next, there is NO REASON the zip file will be gone unless it detected and deleted by firmware, in which I am strongly believe you booted into verygreens uSD.

I have been using CM7/CM9 dual boot from uSD after I registered in Nook Color stock ROM. When I tried to update to 1.4.2, I removed the uSD before I put the zip file through USB connection according to BN's instruction. It went to sleep but nothing happened except that the zip file was gone. I tried that twice with the same result. I also have problem in installing apps in NC boot (with or without uSD inserted).
I am running mostly CM7 (and sometimes with CM9) using the dual boot uSD image from Racks. I did not know this way would install CWM or change anything in eMMC.

Thanks for your help. I have been using the uSD dual boot image from Racks and I updated it a few times. I did not know if that would install the CWM or not. It is good to know that it can be recovered easily. Thanks again.

Thanks, but I cannot get to clockworkmod recovery. I tried: Power + Vol+, Power + V-, Power + Vol+ +U and Power + Vol- + U but none bring up the clockw

One brute force approach is to restore to stock and then apply MN. If you want to do that you can create a bootable sd card using http://androidforums.com/nookcolor-...od-recovery-twrp-version-3-2-0-1-sd-card.html
Then you can flash stock BN1.4.1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22809801&postcount=148
At this point, you can update to BN1.4.2 and then apply MN. I know many prefer to have CWM on emmc - but I am a firm believer in minimizing problems by keepin CWM on a bootable SD. Backup the device that you are running on has too many potential pitfalls.

You can get to by holding n, vol +, and power for 8 seconds after you see the screen flicker, or just n and power for 8 seconds.
If you can't get to it, that is fine. I would double check the system version information to make sure that you are on 1.2. Then I would would re-download the update file from B&N, LINK. The system will only delete the file if are already running that version, the file is corrupt, or you interrupt it in the process.
If you continue to have problems, you might want to think about doing a system restore, LINK
If you have a fully working 1.2 installation, you can also open Rom Manger, and install CWM. You can then install the 1.4.2 file that I link to you, and if you wish to remove when you are done, you can just flash that last file that I linked.
At least one should get you to where you need to be
Wipe
Do you have to do a wipe to run the new manual nooter and by wipe what exactly does that mean?
also which app should I use to run the backup?

Ok, I kinda get your meaning, but could you possibly go step-by-step so I don't mess anything up? I really would prefer going with option #2 (why not use CWM while it's still on there?)
my most pressing question is -- how do I boot into CWM without using an SD-card? I have tried holding down "Power + n" and 'Power + Vol+", but neither work.
Thanks for any help you can give!

[Q] no recovery nook color cm7 sd boot

I have used verygreens sd boot v1.3 for cm7 on nook color but no matter what version of cm7 I run it will not let me boot into recovery to flash gapps. I've tried any and all button combos, reboot into recovery from power menu, and boot into recovery from clockwork mod. I have searched all over for this issue but have not found anything about not being able to get into recovery at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nook color boot loop

Specs:
Nook Color Tablet bought off of ebay with CM10 on the internal memory (that "didn't work") and ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1
2gb bootable CM10 card
What i've done:
wiped the 2gb CM10 sd card.
Flashed internal memory (via the youtube tutorial) and put cm10 nightly from 03132013 and gapps
Installed netflix and hulu plus
Installed a blank 8gb sd card for apps and storage
So here's the problem. Last weekend I was watching a tv series on netflix. Drained the battery completely. Plugged it up for about two hours to recharge. Apparently When I plugged it up it decided to boot. >at this point it should be noted that the properly formated 8gb sdcard was in it, and not the bootable recovery sd card that was at the house<. When it booted it went straight into the ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1 menu. When I got back from the run we were on I tried rebooting it. It came up with the cyanoboot universal bootloader main screen, screen flashed and it went straight into the ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.0.1 menu again. I tried rebooting several times. Same thing.
So tonight I got online, did a search, didn't find the answers i was looking for and settled on installing [ROM][JB 4.1.2][04MAR13 v1.20] SCHIZOID all-in-one (CM10+AOKP M1+PA 2.55). I flashed the /system, /data and /cache. Installed the new rom. Used the nook button + power to power it down, removed the boot card, and rebooted. Can you guess what it did? (see above).
So now i'm stuck. I DO NOT want to use a sd card to boot my nook. I want the OS in the main memory. Suggestions?
it should be noted, as i left this out of my OP, that I had tried to reflash CM10 back onto it. after that didn't work I tried the other rom. I've now tried reflashing CM10 and NOTHING is working.

You are in a recovery bootloop. Look at my NC Tips thread linked in my signature. See item A8 and A12. I suspect given your symptoms, you need to flash the romsrestore.zip file. It is trying to boot to stock recovery and repair itself.

created the CWM-5.5.0.4 bootable sd card and tried it that way. all that did was change the CWM menu blue instead of orange.

created the CWM-5.5.0.4 bootable sd card and tried it that way. all that did was change the CWM menu blue instead of orange.

I suggest you flash my zip for putting stock recovery back on the system. Then boot and let it do what it had been trying to do, whatever that is. It could be trying to do the 8 failed boot reset. Then when it has finished, put a new rom on it.
Either that or put stock on it (A15) and it will put everything back to virgin. Then you can put your own rom on it.
