Soft button/keyboard lights - Droid 2 General

My soft keys and keyboard backlights don't work. It quite annoying, and I've tried everything I know of short of restarting(im texting someone), and I would like to have them so I may see the symbols(I've already memorized the text layout so I can type without looking) as well as it just looks cool. Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is a known issue with the GB leak... restart the phone and the lights will come back... for a while...

The way I've been 'fixing' this is by going into my camcorder, turning on the light and turning it back off, locking the phone and then unlocking.
Seems to fix whatever muffs up with the light sensor.

Thanks for the tip. Will try that next time I need the lights in a pinch. Is this the regular camera, or the video camera?

The tip from MetalFrog works! Glad I don't have to restart my phone every time!
Thanks!

I also use DroidLight, which does the same fix as the video camera's light.

Keyboard light never, ever, works.

Got my Sprint Mogul a couple of days ago and having a tough time with the keyboard backlight not working.
I've done my searching and found that some people got their keyboard backlight to work by unchecking the option in Settings->Buttons->Backlight.
This didn't work for me.
Some people recommended just hitting a few keys and the backlight should work.
This didn't work for me either.
I'm looking at what just may be bad hardware and will have to replace the phone. That keyboard is damn hard to see in even the best low-light conditions. Forget about typing in the dark.
Does anyone know of methods that will force the keyboard to turn on so that I can test it?
unchecking the auto sensor option like you did should force it to come on whenever the keyboard is out, if it doesnt come on within a few seconds of sliding out id say get a replacement phone
I agree with defaultdotxbe...if unchecking the autosensor box isn't forcing it to be always on, I'd be worried.
I've left the autosensor activated, and my keyboard light works, but I must admit that it sometimes doesn't go on when I think it should. The sensor seems to be calibrated so that it has got to be pretty dark for the silly thing to decide to light up!
Having said that, someone on one of these forums came up with a pretty neat trick. If know I want to force the keyboard to be lit, I just slide it out about a quarter of an inch. The sensor is still hidden under the body of the phone at this point, and it thinks it's completely in the dark. The keyboard always lights up at that point. Once it's lit, then I slide the keyboard out the rest of the way. Brilliant, huh? You might wanna try that just to see if it makes any difference.
Good luck!
Thanks, peeps. I had the same problem with the keyboard light and was getting extremely frustrated. I tried the sensor trick (opening the keyboard 1/4) and, viola, it worked!
Walrus44
I also had the problem and after lots of searching I found out it was because I had the screen backlight turned all the way down. I moved it up to the first notch and now it works just fine even with the sensor.

This trick also fixes the orientation issues when turning on and it is in landscape rather than portrait.

BUG developers know that it?

To prove the point, get a camera, and HD2,You will see it glow white !
use a camera and point it at the sensor you will find the white light blinking while in android, where as in WINMO it doesnt, it blinks during calls only!!!
How does this matter at all? (unless it's some kind of vital bug in liblights)

I think the concern was that the IR light used for sensing if you are holding the phone up to your head during a call is on all the time instead of just during calls. In theory that would use a little extra battery, apart from that it wouldn't do anything.
Not a major concern, but if someone was looking at the lights code they could take a look.

Ah, I see. Thanks for clearing that up.
Mine don't glow..

It (infrared) glows but only while screen is on. Not in standby. But that could do SOME unnecessary draining if not in a call.
Dev know that?

Proximity sensor delay after a call

Hi guys just wondering if you noticed this strange behaviour.
I noticed a quite frustrating delay after a call when i take the phone away from my ear, it takes 2-3 sec for the screen to turn back on.
Has anybody experienced the same?
Do you know if there is a solution for this?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
yes, think its normal. looks like the same delay when pushing power button for screen on.

Thank you.
That seems strange as it is something really basic that you expect to work in a phone of this price range. Moreover it's something you come across quite often.
Do you know if the latest firmware improves this?

You can just turn off the sensor in the call app, if you want your screen to be available just after a call.. I don't see the problem.. but my delay is also just around a second or so.

But if I do that i will drain battery unnecessarily. I don't know you guys but I find it really annoying having to wait 2sec after a call for the screen to wake up. I want to be able to hang up immediately i think I'm not asking something ridiculous.

you can also set the power button to terminate the call and you will not have to wait for the screen to turn on...
Reading the data from an analogue sensor (such as the proximity one) is always tricky... You need time to level out the values coming back from it, then determine that, over a period of time, the distance is suitable to enable the screen.
Only then can it be turned on etc

How do you go about doing this? Can it be changed in the setting sor does it require a separate App?

Yes i find this very annoying too!
Especially when on a call center, press 2 (wait for screen) then press 4 (wait for screen) you get the idea
this is actually the only problem i have with the SGS2 since ke7

sgs 1 managed it fine though?....or am i missing something
Yeh my i8000 had no delay with the proximity censor.
But the screen delay seems to be everywhere. Turning on from sleep, time to adjust to ambient light and obviously the proximity sensor after pulling it away from your face.
Its not a major drama for me but I agree that it would be good to not have the delay.
I just noticed that when I use Skype the sensor works really well, meaning there is almost no lag.
I'm confused..

Yes! Very annoying.
Yep! I was commenting on this the other day. To be honest, I make and receive very few calls from my phone but when i do, I feel the rage rising inside me everytime because of the sensor delay.
It's the small things that annoy you the most.
As mentioned, you can opt to have the power button hang up the phone. It also does not turn the screen off, so you can continue working on the phone.
This is actually under accessibility settings, not call settings.
Menu -> Settings -> Accessibility -> Cancel the prompt -> Tick 'The power key ends calls'.
I also find the lag on waking up very annoying. Even once the screen has woken up, it takes a second for the touch input to be recognised so the pattern unlock only registers my last two or three inputs depending on how quickly I start swiping. I have to enter the pattern again. Very annoying.

I also have this problem, although I'd estimate it only takes about 1-1.5 seconds for the screen to come on.
I do however not think that this is a sensor problem, but rather a software problem.
Type *#0*# in the dialer, and press Sensor.
The phone will now vibrate once you trigger the proximity sensor. And it seems to be very fast and responsive here.
i have the problem using Skype...when i start a call it turns automatically the screen off ! i need then to push on home button to get out of skype...very ennoying...
last time i made an order online, my bank sent me a code by phone and following the instruction, the voice asked me to push the number i hear...i simply could not !! the screen was completely off ! and i could not succefully purchase online, my order was cancelled !.....due to this problem of screen..i think it is seriously ennoying and must be fixed in an update firm or something .
Agreed, this is a very annoying and unnecessary delay. Especially coming from an iPhone, where the screen turns on instantaneously when removed from the ear.
Hoping for a fix.
im ready to pay to get this fixed

Smart Rotate

Wondering if this is working for everyone? On my ALIE firmware the feature doesnt seem to function as described, i.e., my eyes/face rotating 45 degrees does not cause the screen to rotate at all.
keep the phone on a flat surface and rotate ur head it should work
press thanks if this helped

i wish it was that simple. Just doesnt work.
What are you trying to do?
Smart rotate is just for 90 degrees. Imho, it is for people lying down.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using XDA Premium HD app
Smart rotate doesn't check if your head rotated or not at random times, it only checks your heads/eyes position when the phone is rotated 90° (in other words, whenever the phone is supposed to rotate, it does an extra check before doing so)

Doesn't these face detection gimmicks like smart rotate and smart stay use gobs of battery power since the front camera is active e?

could be that your face is too ugly or disfigured for the feature to recognize it. sorry

It only checks every now and then.
In fact, I bet it only checks when the phone is rotated.
Regardless, the amount of power used by a quick camera check is minimal compared to the power needed to light the screen.

Can confirm on mine, that this is to stop the screen rotating when you yourself rotate with the phone, for example when lying down.
It would seem it only checks when the screen attempts to rotate (you see an eye icon in the notification bar briefly). I do believe that this actually causes a slight delay when you do want to rotate the screen as it will need to do the check first.
i believe it needs to have a good clean shot of your face in portrait mode first, then it can detect your 2 eyes turning to landscape and thus do a rotate.
I need this feature when in bed at night (for reading mostly) but it doesnt work in the dark so its totally useless for me.
Samsung should have put in a small low power Infrared LED (which is a light source cameras can see but humans only see a dim red light) - this would have made the feature work in all situations or at least work in most situations.

Check the phone in complete darkness .. there is a very feint red light emitted from the sensor area!
Mine would rotate normally whether I enabled or disabled the option. When I rotate the phone, the eye icon would appear on the notification bar. It takes about 1 to 3 seconds, and then it rotate no matter where I'm pointing the front camera to. It would even rotate in the dark.

Yeah, I've noticed that too.
Is it some kind of IR-light?
This feature is a hit and a miss.. really annoying when watching an youtube video.. even before enabling this feature samsung warned about lag or slow screen rotation... probably they might be working on this feature and might release an update fix soon...

Flashlight gesture

Back again with another bug.
Ok, so to use the flashlight gesture you have to light up the screen using the power button. Fine. But I have to shake it really violently to get it to react and turn on. It's actually quicker to unlock the screen using the fingerprint sensor and then use the drop-down shortcuts.
Can someone tell me if they have the same issue? Beginning to think I have a lemon and might be better off getting a replacement while I can.
Thanks in advance.

My flashlight gesture is almost identical to the moto x flashlight gesture (chop chop). Work great, just wish the screen didn't need to be on.
Edit: scratch that, it's a lot worse since updating to B27. Will add this to my big bug list. Thank you!
Same issue here since the update. I shake it big time and it won't even turn on.
