Does the acer iconia support a 320 gb harddrive??
Whts the maximum capacity hard drive that it can read?
Sent from my XT720 using XDA App
Out of the box it can only read FAT32 formatted drives. Your bigger harddrive is most likely formatted as NTFS, you can find a solution to read these drives in the development forum of the Iconia A500.
I've connected 2tb drives just fine. The a500 only supports fat32 drives natively. If its ntfs try ntfsmount or usb mount all.

Hello everyone,
I've searched around, checked the wiki and the manual but didn't find a definitive answer to the above question.
I bought 2 32gb cards from Amazon:
Transcend 32 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS32GSDHC10E
A-DATA AUSDH32GCL4-RA1 MicroSDHC 32GB Class 4 + SD Adapter, Black
I tested the following filesystems created with default settings using gparted on the A-DATA drive:
- ext2
- ext3
- ext4
- fat32
- ntfs
I also tested the following from Windows 7 x64:
- extfat
- fat32
- ntfs
Only fat32 seems to be working (I canconfirm that it works on the Transcend as well) - am I missing something? I was hoping for better filesystem support in Honeycomb 3.1 - fat32 is quite limited...
Please let me know if there's a way to enable ntds and/or ext4 support on the Transformer.
Cheers,
Peter

NTFS on my A-Data 16GB SD works (although it's acting wierd due to I think the dock and sleep mode so I'm sending it back for a microSD variant instead)
What is change and where to support drives, microsd and sd cards formated in ext2/3/4?
Darkonex: please clarify how you formatted your adata.

I just read about external drives in the accessories section and people there are reporting ntfs formatted drives connected over usb working without issues so I also checked with a 160gb usb drive formatted as ntfs - and it works!
Now my questions is how is it possible that ntfs is supported on usb drive while it is not supported on microsd/sd cards?

I simply put it in an SD card reader in my Windows 7 PC and formatted it through Computer Management to NTFS there.
I did some more tests and also asked Asus to confirm what are officially supported.
According to them FAT32 and NTFS are supported.
According to my tests NTFS only works using the keyboard dock's USB ports or SD reader, does NOT work using the tablet's micrSD slot - I was able to use my microD card in the tablet's microSD reader if it was formatted as FAT32. I'm quite sure this is an issue with the tablet as the same microSD card works in the SD card reader of the dock using a microD-SD converter formatted as NTFS.

Well this sucks. I cannot copy large files onto the MicroSD (Like a hidef MKV movie). I tried NTFS and exFAT and it will not read them.
WTF asus! Why include something that does not function fully!

Err. I want the movies on the card not the TF memory. The whole point of the card is to allow for storage of files I do not want to keep on the TF.
Use a hard drive
I just checked out a movie on my WD 500 gig hard drive. Worked perfectly, just plugged the drive into the dock and it mounted right away. If I wanted I could then copy it to my Transformer and delete after use or watch from the drive.

Uhh. Does it work in the tablet. I formatted a 8gb microSD to ntfs and my tab couldn't read it. I must admit it has been at least a month since I tried that. Is the ntfs support something new?

Hmm I swear I tried that when I had a windows comp and couldn't get android to recognize the card when it was formatted as NTFS. Ill have to borrow a friends computer to try again.

Mine has also worked from Day 1(beginning of June) with ntfs.
I was actually worried, as windows vista(the only computer I had with a sd slot) doesn't give you the option to format as fat32 without extra work. But since the ntfs worked, I've had no problems since.

I did it a couple weeks ago on 8GB microSD. Put in Ubuntu LINUX box and deleted partition, recreated under LINUX as NTFS. However, I did not test in my TF101, because it was for another project.
Good luck.

So you did not test on the TF. So your post seems a bit pointless?
Also for those it works please can you state what brand/size and what sector size you used to format to NTFS etc.

Again another kind of pointless post. Who cares if it works from your hard disk plugged into the dock? I don't carry my dock and hard disk everywhere. The whole point is to be able to use the MicroSD. I am not interested in how well your hard disk works with your dock. Anyone can do that. Sorry but I find these types of reply very frustrating to read.

Yes I used a card reader and formatted it NTFS in my Win7 machine, and did this long ago so no it's not new.
ntfs is not supported out of the box. You need a special kernel.
Most custom roms have it. Or you can format it into ext, but windows doesn't support it, so it won't be able to read it when you put it into cardreader.

Being able to format a microsd card in ntfs is not in question here. I just spent the last hour testing formats.
I used a Sandisk 8gb microSD HC card.
Test 1. Formatted card with NTFS, verified format, copied an mp4 file to the card, stuck it into the microSD card slot on the TF. No joy.
Test 2. Formatted card with FAT32, verified format, copied same mp4 file to the card, stuck it into the microSD card slot on the TF. Well wuddaya know. Works fine.
My conclusion. A microSD card formatted in NTFS will not work in the microSD slot on the TF.
Go figure. Bet somebody will tell me it will work in the dock. Which I don't own so it doesn't apply.
Thank you

Now we are getting somewhere. I really appreciate your short explanation of how it can work. Wish your post was a couple of hours earlier. But hey, I like experimenting. Not ready for rooting yet though.
I'm using Prime 1.6 v2 and it does not read NTFS?
I have a
Western Digital 3TB Mybook Essential USB 3.0 External HDD
The problem is, that the A500 will not accept this drive connected via USB.
Do anyone have an ida with such a large HDD.
A 2TB HDD has no problem.
Is the drive formatted as fat32?
size is not the issue
Depends on format. If you do not have root access, the USB drive is only mountable if it is FAT/FAT32 file system. If it's NTFS you will need root and a external app (I use Drive Mount, free from market) to be able to use said external HDD

Hmmmm. Can you hook it up to your PC and check it's properties? What format is it even in?
The drive mount tool shows the drive, but "mount all" fails?
Does the drive actually work on a USB2 port?
over 2,19TB needs Advanced Format
Hi,
I read in one of the computer magazines that MBR (master boot record) only works for drives up to 2.19TB in size, bigger requires this new Advanced Format Support . Win7 SP1 includes this by defauilt I believe. Could be the case for the Iconia that the size is simply too big and that this AF is not (yet) supported ...
just my2 cents,
Marcher

Yes it works without a problem on a USB2 port on my PC
When you connect to pc does it shows like 2 drivers letters or only 1, if shows 2 that's your problem there is utility on wd site how to reconfigure to show 1 drive.

If it is formatted NTFS and you have a stock A500 that is your problem. You need to format it as a FAT32 drive. You cannot do this through drive management in Windoze 7 (as far as I know) - you need to use a third party application or root your A500 and perform the necessary mods.
Once you root, you can use this.
I had success with the following utility and my 500GB NTFS-formatted external:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13337600&postcount=6
Hope this helps.
NTFS is the norm for External Hard Drives
External Hard Drives all come formatted NTSF. FAT32 is only used on thumb drives less than 16GB large. A file cannot be larger than 4GB on a FAT32 formatted drive and seeing how there are many files(VOB, ISO, MP4) that are larger than 4GB, most people don't think to format their drives to FAT32. If you have a Windows PC you can use an easy program you can find HERE to format your hard drive to FAT32
Ran into a similar problem with my new 1TB WD Passport.
Drive mount sees it and mounts it, but then I don't see the drive contents in root explorer.

Have you checked all the directories under /mnt? I haven't had an issue, just tested with a 1TB as well.

I use WD 1TB HDD that's formated in NTFS and it does have the virtual drive as when mounted on PC there are two drives mounted.
However I have no problem to mount it on my A500 using the DriveMount. From memory it mounted as sd1(?) under /mnt/...
Just stick the cable to A500 USB port and click the mount all.
I tryed all what here was suggested.
I also splitted the drive in an 2 TB and a 1TB partition.
NTSF-Mount recognized this but didn't mount the two drives.
Has anybody other experiences?

I am rooted
I tried drive mount and ntsf mount. Drive mount recognize the drive but do not mount. ntsf mount sometimes mount the drives (I think when i start the pad the last 10 minutes) and do not mount when I plug in the drive.
I use the "[ROM] Honeycomb 3.1 - HoneyVillain 1.05 with 2.5 Kernel)
With 3 TB I had no chance to mount. With splitting it seems that ther are some possibilities but I didnt know at this time what really happens.

It does. But have problems with ntfs formated USB storages. For ntfs I'm using Nexus Media Importer. So s5 is able to mount those ntfs formated hard disks. Working great.
