*Waits for the bombardment of hate*
I don't want it on my TF01 as I love Honeycomb and personally Android is far superior, but I was just wondering if it would actually be possible due to the TF01 running what is essentially the same chipset as the iPad 2.
OSX got ported to PC's with an Intel chip, so what would be stopping iOS getting put on the TF01?
Again, Im not asking when its going to be done, im just wondering as proof of concept since it just hit me they have the same chipset. So yeah, in theory, could it be done?
Here we go.........
I like iOS as well but if you wanted iOS....then you REALLY should have gotten a iPad instead.
With respect.
EDIT: I misunderstood. Apologies.
It may be possible. ANYTHING is possible.

Im not an Apple lover who really wanted an iPad.
Simply wondering for proof of concept.
iPad use custom ARM A4 and A5 processors. I doubt they'll run on anything else (and I'm sure Apple has done a lot to make sure it stays that way).
Where's the auto-ban here?!
I'm sure it's possible since the architecture is similar. Though it's doubtful anyone would care enough to invest the time required to make the port possible.
Though I am looking forward to the HAL 9000 port... not that different than iOS

The Tegra 2 is Dual Core A9 processors with an Nvidia GeForce 333 chip. The iPad 2 uses the same Dual Core A9 processors, just with a PowerVR SGX 543MP instead.
Hence why I asked the question
I still have an old iPod laying around.. I would rather get android on that..

Like I said, OSX on PC has been done because they both use Intel. Now both the Asus and iPad 2 use A9's so its a challenge if anyone wants it (if its possible)

Thats not the point though, its proof of concept. HTC said Sensation couldn't go on older phones but they got it on the DHD and it was all out of size. That was sorted out eventually though
iOS is closed source, just like all the rest of Apple's software. iOS on the Xoom/Transformer/Galaxy Tab 10.1 won't happen because there are no drivers for Tegra on iOS, and without the source code, only Apple knows how to write drivers for it. The only people capable of porting iOS to other devices are Apple's own developers.

OSX on PC has been done because Apple themselves originally made a port of OSX for x86 architecture, and all modern Macs use the exact same hardware that has been available on PCs. This means that hackers for projects like OSX86 don't even have to write new drivers if your motherboard specs match that of a recent Mac. OSX has the drivers to support a fairly large range of hardware, because unlike iPhones and iPads, high end Macs are designed to taken apart so you can install new hardware, with a few limitations of course for quality control.
The EULA for OSX actually states that you are in violation of its terms by installing OSX to a non-Apple device, which means no warranty or support from Apple if it all goes belly up. Furthermore, Apple implements their own specialized bootloader for the precise purpose of making it near impossible to run OSX on anything that doesn't possess special Apple branding on the firmware level.
Apple software is only designed for Apple devices. Enforcing that artificial restriction is what allows Apple to sell their devices at such a premium price, and if there ever existed a way to install iOS to something besides an iPhone or iPad, you can bet that Apple would sue the pants off the developer, because that's their main revenue stream at risk.
Short version: No
Long Version: Hackintoshes can happen why people find PC's that match the hardware of existing or old Macs, This is because OsX contains drivers for many older Macs. iOS has a smaller kernel built only for the version of the device it's on. How many android devices do you know that can run an unmodified build from a different phone? virtually none. And how do Android hackers get non-native builds to work:
1. Recompile source from AOSP -> no source available for iOS
2. Recompile Just Kernel with new drivers -> no available Kernel source for iOS devices
3. Swap binary blob drivers from other devices -> no iOS binary blob drivers available for any Android devices
4. Unlock bootloader to boot different OS builds -> iOS requires specific boot hardware that no Android device has.
Every single bit of wiggle room we normally have is a dead end on iOS, so no, its never going to happen.

I don't want this to become a discussion of which OS is better, but does anyone think there will be a windows 8 install available for the A500? I read that windows 8 will support arm. Just curious.

No, the drivers aren't there for it, but they may release an upgrade for the w500 which was acers windows version of out tablet. It had different hardware specs than the a500.
Tegra 3 tablets will supposedly run Windows 8 (ARM Edition).
youtube.com/watch?v=HWOOefm_rwo
Tegra 3 tablets designed for windows will run windows 8, tegra 3 tablets designed for android won't. That is the same as the tegra 2 tablets, if you bought a Acer W500 it came with windows and you can't upgrade it to android because the driver support isn't there. The tablets came with different parts inside. Without the drivers your out of luck.

Windows 8 ARM (WHERE ARE YOU)
This question has been asked and talked about over and over again...
I do think it all depends on the windows 8 arm version.. myself because of the way linux is partitioned. The way our device is partitioned Size of boot / system partitions and OF course the protected boot loader.. IT will take some very extreme hacks to just get it installed .then there is the whole drive thing people are talking about.Thou many tegra devices shares alot of hardware. and there is a huge chance that this device could have the same hardware as in camera bluetooth gps and so on as the w500. im almost Positive its the same with the camera and bluetooth . as i have a acer and a gateway notebook that share these same common hardware chip type devices the chinon (i think is proper spelling) for cam . the iconia has this cam chip as well .
if you factor all of this together.. Someone would really have to want it VERY BAD.. or microsoft will have to do alot of testing with ACER .
the short answer is .. FLIP A COIN WILL Bring just as good answeres until its out in beta..
An answer from Acer technical support
I ask gently to the technical support if Windows 8 Will be ported to the Iconia Tab A501 and the answer was really short ...
NO
So, if some people work on it to build one for us, we will have it. Other else, too bad

Yes, isn't that what we said already? Why is it that hard to believe?
Win8ARM will not be sold separately, it can only come preinstalled. Secondly, Microsoft is only allowing it on fully locked-down devices; no open bootloaders for you. Thirdly it'll be very hard to even get admin access because Win8ARM doesn't allow sideloading; all and every single application must come from the Windows Store. No, you cannot run or install stuff from USB or Flash or network shares. All these things considering it'll be a wonder if someone can even copy the ROM successfully, let alone make it run on a device which doesn't have Secure Boot.
Short answer: NO, A500 WILL NOT GET WIN8.
A slight taste of the Near future .

OVER The past 10 years i have been saying. been protesting. that eventually that if this locked device and embedded software is not stopped with laws .All electronic devices will end up with a very short end of life from manufacturers. Well folks its here. If Microsoft does the above. Well even they will push minor but much needed updates like security fixes on old devices devices and make them OBSOLETE much sooner by not supporting new much needed technology to keep devices viable..
This by the way Microsoft has been two faced from MS . there statement is ( THe manufacture has a choice rather to lock a device or not but they believe the end use should have a right to choose what os to run on there device. They say in this statement they are confident everyone will choose ms software ) This statement i disagree with . the only way to protect our right to have unlocked devices is to take it to the COURTS. But with all the recent activity about piracy this is a fight that will Be very hard and a long battle. EMBEDED SYSTEMS IS THE FUTURE AND WILL COST CUTTING EDGE CONSUMERS BILLIONS. Someone very good with web development start a TRUE WEBSITE TO PROTEST THIS.. many will join in and make this fight start now before its to late..
YES The above sounds like a conspiracy just do some research then post your opinion . Sorry op of this is off topic but its kinda related..

Actually, you're slightly incorrect there; Microsoft says that only about PCs, ie. PCs must have Secure Boot enabled, but the manufacturer can decide whether or not to allow end-users to disable that. But on ARM devices Secure Boot MUST be enabled and there must be absolutely no way for end-users to disable that or the manufacturer won't be allowed to sell Windows 8.

while I don't doubt the A50x will not see Win8, I do have to say... What Microsoft WANTS and what we the users DO seldom go hand in hand
Nope
I can't understand why people even think that this could be possible? the ONLY chance you'd see WinRT running on A500 is that m$ used it as a development platform...like HTC HD2 got wp7. Also, you need someone inside to leak the test OS....
Porting an ARM OS it's all about proper drivers, considering the ARM version and SOC design are somehow on the same gen. Nobody is insane enough to try and port a CLOSED OS. Even if it wasn't closed tight, porting and tweaking drivers is a hell of a job...just look at Android ( a Linux based, open source OS), how hard is to get rid of bugs because manufacturers like to keep the drivers closed source.
Also, it is imperative for MS,in order to get a chance in tablet market, to have a close-to- flawless OS,just like IoS, where the bugs are scarce. getting this job done requires at least two big choices to be made. You can only do that by completely opening the whole OS and hardware, therefore rely on a full pool of devs< nobody's choice> or you can do it by having clearly drawn/ restricted hardware devices, like WP7 phones and IOS devices.
I don't believe in locked down BLs, but I see no way that an Android native device will ever run WinRT.
It will of course happen, but it will take tremendous work to do. This always happens to an allegedly locked down OS... case in point- Hackintoshs where people install OSX onto a PC. People were even putting Android onto old WinMo handsets.
But you inevitably end up with a device that doesn't work as well as the original. Drivers were mentioned, plus there's being off the update/patch path, and plain & simple bugs that always crop up.
tl;dr: Yes, expect it. No, it won't work well.
Before anyone says anything, no, this is not another topic asking the stupid, worn out question "can I haz w8 on my kindle fire/nook/transformer prime/galaxySII/ect"
At CES there are several android devices being shown off with x86 processors: Intel atom CPUs. Would it be possible, provided internal storage is big enough, to be able to run the full version of windows 8 on these pieces of hardware? I can't think of any reasons why not, and being able to run full versions of x86 windows off of a cell phone is just amazing. IMHO it'd be worth the price of a seat of windows 8, and dual booting with android ICS sounds incredible. So, is there anything I'm missing? Or would the hardware support it fairly easily? I can't think of any roadblocks, other than the annoyance of installing off of microSD.
I think this must be a new kind of Atom-CPUs that are built for the ARM-architecture on which Android runs? I red somewhere that they wanted to release that Kind of CPUs this year.

Why bother about it being on x86, windows 8 will run on ARM architecture too if I'm not mistaken
Because putting W8ARM on existing devices is probably impossible and quite likely to be illegal.
Not sure why it would be illegal. If you own a license of the OS, you should be able to run it on whatever you want - unless, like the Apple stuff there's some kind of EULA that states that you specifically can't. I seriously doubt MS would bother to screw with people who tried anyway.
The Developer Preview of W8 is x86/x64 only anyway. Hopefully the beta coming in February will Feb will have arm support. I'm hoping to get it working on a Galaxy Tab 10.1 but who knows?
One potential caveat. I've heard that the ARM version will only work with Metro apps. If that's the case, it will be far less useful. Forget running all that excellent software you already have and know an love.
Greg
Microsoft (and the hardware manufacturers of current Android devices) don't want this to happen on ARM devices, because having an open bootloader and a myriad of Linux distributions would hurt their ecosystems. All ARM W8 tablets will come with locked bootloaders by specification, just like Android ones. Existing Android devices and others like the TouchPad will be very difficult to port this to because the bootloader security is different from current devices. But who wants ARM Windows 8 as the old apps and desktop don't work on it?
Regarding x86: If it's possible on the HTC Shift, it will sure be possible on Medfield (next-gen Atom for phones) devices, especially if the bootloader is open. If it's closed the scene will figure out how to unlock it and install Windows 7/W8/Ubuntu/etc. on it just like on a regular PC, which would mean having access to all legacy apps. Of course dual boot would also be possible.

Since only OEMs will be able to buy W8 ARM liscences, and liscences are not device transferable, you will not be allowed to port it to a non-liscenced device, just like Windows Mobile or WP7.
And no, W8ARM will not be able to run x86 programs.
I think there's an excellent chance that private users will be able to get a copy of W8 for arm.
And whether or not x86 code will run in the arm version is definitely not settled.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/07/desktop-apps-may-run-on-win8-for-arm-after-all-maybe/
I read that article and laughed. Never once did they mention ARM - they were reffering to the 'classic desktop' UI, and they can't decide if W8ARM will be metro only, or have the (for ARM) near useless classic desktop.
Give up all hope that W8ARM will have an emulator built in. Its not going to happen, performance will be so terrible it would alienate customers. W8ARM will not be available to consumers for the same reason WP7 isn't - Microsoft would loose too much control and non-techie customers would be too confused.
Not sure but does this mean windows 8 on a Cisco Cius is possible cause it has an Intel atom processor?
Sent via Samsung Skyrocket with Sky ICS
if it has an atom processor, it should be. as with anything cross-platform, drivers would be an issue, but that shouldn't be too hard to overcome.
That's pretty awesome
Sent via Samsung Skyrocket with Sky ICS
yes right, i am agree with u
I personally hope intel medfield kills off any arm competitors in the windows 8 tablet business. I am not happy with how closed arm can be compared to x86.
The arm architecture is more open than x86. But indeed you can do more on x86 based hardware as there is more software available for it.
moved to general
As long as your x86 Android netbook can boot from USB storage and isn't locked into the OSes that it came with, I guess it could be possible as long as the amount of RAM and internal storage meet the minimum requirements.
Sent from my LS670 using XDA
x86 instruction sets are one thing but drivers are a whole different ball game.
But in theory yes, Win 8 x86 could run on x86 android hardware, with several very large assumptions being made
as for ARM, I think we can forget x86 emulation, the overheads would cripple it. To be honest, I personally wouldn't have a use for an ARM tablet, an x86 tablet however would be very useful, so come on Intel, get your finger out and give us some affordable ultra low watt x86 SoCs, keep it cheap an OEMS will trip over them selves buying them, after all, backward compatibility means les overheads for companies and less hassle for users.

no, it won't be.
W8ARM will not be available to consumers, only manufacturers, making liscences for ports almost, if not completely impossible to obtain. It will also require an encrypted bootloader and specific hardware, which the iPad 2/3 quite possibly won't meet up with. Even if those were able to be worked around, you'd need to create drivers for windows, and, as the idroid project as shown, creating new drivers for iOS devices is incredibly hard.
So no. give up all hope of W8ARM on existing Android/iOS/WebOS hardware now.
it MAY be possible to get W8ARM on a WP7/WP8 device, maybe even the HD2, seeing as they (should) have compatible drivers and since they're all Microsoft, there are theoretical loopholes for the licence. but that's still going to be difficult, and may never work properly.
TL;DR version - if you want Windows 8 ARM, buy a device that comes with it.

no, it won't. the secure boot hardware, liscenceing, and drivers will make it impossible, unless you want to start soldering circuit boards and dealing with lawyers.
The two ( 2 ) people that want to dual boot ios/w8 are disappointed.
The rest of the world, ie, ipad owners...ask them if they want to boot w8 on their ipad. If they don't run away screaming "I hate Microsoft Office and got an ipad to get away from worrrrrrk!!!" Then you may be able to get more responses from them.
How many slates, er wait, we're calling them tablets again ? Have you seen in public ? Now how many ipads ? There will be no interest from the public, and even less from developers.
It wont happen that i am sure of
It can't happen since there is no bootrom exploit for the A5 chip. And Microsoft isn't likely to release an ISO or whatever for Windows on ARM either way.

i think your on to something ere
All 3 companies are very good at stealing each others ideas so I doubt any of them will suffer much from Windows 8. Fundamentaly all 3 do the same job, so it comes down too personal preference, with that I should say Mac fans wont buy Windows 8 and nor will Android Fans or visa versa. Windows 8 simply allows Microsoft to play with the other boys in the Tablet field. I don't believe its the killer blow that will knock the others out of the ring.
I don't think it's going to do better than android, but it's going to gobble up a large portion of the market. WindowsPhone 8 is going to have support for MicroSD cards, native code and multi core processors, which all point to it being better than both iOS and Android. I'm honestly considering skipping the SGS3 and waiting for a Windows Phone "Apollo" phone instead.
WP7 is already the fastest OS of the three, and with support for even faster and better hardware, it's going to be just lightning quick.
Exciting times ahead!

I don't agree so much with this. I'm a Mac and I own an Android phone.
I guess it is down to appreciating the software engineering side of things.
I love how my Mac "just works", however do not appreciate the way iOS devices seem to only be designed for children who need the restrictions and wouldn't do much else than play games, read, learn, etc.
I also appreciate Android devices for the freedom and endless opportunities.
Windows 8... It is pretty cool, however, I'd rather not a tablet that is prone to PC viruses AND locked to only the one OS. Apple are also guilty with the whole "locked to one OS" philosophy.
Then again, the Linux kernel is my preference over the bloated one from Microsoft.

It would be nice to stop insulting people who prefer efficiency more than complexity. It's getting old.
I think the Microsoft strategy is starting to show itself and I with with in 18 months there will be more METRO devices than Android and even IOS...
I expect Microsoft to virtually give Windows 8 away for Free or at least very cheaply. This is because of the huge potential to make money from the APP STORE so they don`t need to charge much for the OS itself.
Now Windows 7 sold 400 Million Licences as of July 2011 so by Windows 8 release in say Oct 2012 there could be 600 Million Windows 7 PC`s in use...
If only 50% upgrade to a Windows 8 within six months you could be talking about 300 Million customers for METRO APPS a year from now. That is even before any new PC`s or Tablets are sold.
This could even impact the smartphone sales numbers going forward as Windows Phone 8 is likely to be very similar to Windows 8 thus increasing it`s awareness and familiarity to the average person.
With a potential market of 300 Million + customers ...I expect METRO APPS to look better and be more feature rich than Android and IOS APPS, I think this will help drive the sales of Windows 8 tablet hardware.
A year from now Android will be finished in the tablet game and Apple will have big big competition!!

Future is full of uncertainty, no body had ever thought that Nokia vl have to compete with other companies for selling dr product, there was time when N series was consider as kind of huge status but now we have only two major OS iOS n Android outrunning symbian. So just wait n watch how win8 gets ported to phones n tablets.
Will Windows have something like Rosetta to support millions of existing programs on ARM? no.
I said programs, not apps because most people want Windows as they have a need to run Windows programs. That is why Linux and even Macs are limited in growth. And these programs are huge and hard to port due by developers due to libraries dependencies. Moreover, some of these program are specific for an industry/product and weren't updated for years, but people still need to use them. That is why Vista failed and people still use vulnerable XP, even when Windows 7 is out.
But do people need to have Windows to run apps? No. There is thousands of apps for Android and iPad. And I don't think that number of Metro apps will be greater than for Android at launch. So why anyone would want Windows on arm instead of iPad/Android?
Well android is still an os for mobilephones... It's not made for tablets. W8 will be good on a tablet so i think you are right..

Android on a tablet works quite well though.
Yes, I do look forward to seeing how Windows 8 would work, however, the UEFI is what I don't agree with.

The whole "locking the device to only one OS" is why I won't buy an iPad...

I think whoever gets the first mid-range tablet out at the right price point will win. This is total opinion, but my gut tells me the magic number for price is the $200-$300 dollar range for a mass market tablet. Saw glimpses of this during the HP Touchpad fire sale and the Kindle Fire before the user complaints of the device started coming in.
This needs to be a full featured tablet and not the ones that feel watered down that are currently offered at this price range. I think Android has the advantage but w8 could do well if they can offer something that is less clunky and can really nail the backward compatibility of x86 programs.
is just an idea, but is that possible?but some windows may be installed, or some linux??
I know there is a Ubuntu port out there so far but the last time I checked, it was still very buggy.

hopefully in the near future can be made!!??

Dear cubano2031:
Hi,
Acer Iconia Tab A500 specification suggests the compatible operating system as Android Honeycomb.
However according to the hardware specifications, it seems that you can install Windows 8 Consumer Preview in this tablet.

Check my dulbooting thread im assuming he probably meant the arm version but judging on how useless xp was i dont foresee windows 8 being useful :/ although most of the lag is created from the actual app emulation but stil unless someone wants to create a compatiblle recovery.img (you could utelise fastboot) kernel bootloader drivers etc then i dont think it has a chance
I really don't see Windows 8 coming the Iconia due to the type of processor that we have. The Tegra doesn't have any windows drivers as far as I know...... There is more of a chance of us seeing Mac running on our tablet . Due to the fact that it has a Unix base

It's been my experience if someone is determined enough anything is possible. In fact you may just have ignited a fire and determination in someone just to prove you wrong. Let's hope so!
I'm not going to be the one to do it, but I too think this is all but impossible... After all, there's an ARM build, so all that's really missing are drivers. The WiFi/Bluetooth chipset is prety widespread, so this one ought to work. There aren't too many manufacturers of touchscreen devices, so this one ought to work, too, and for audio the situation is much the same. MMC chipsets are mostly broadcom anyway (a500 too, I guess) so there's another component that most likely will work. Also, USB will work as it's well specified and used for a lot of stuff internally by most devices... The only major issues could be with the graphics card, as I don't think Win8 likes VESA mode too much... Also, I wouldn't epect A501 UMTS to work. While graphics support may be a fair amount of work, it certainly seems possible... and UMTS isn't all that important after all (it's unlikely to work without direct manufacturer support as baseband protocols are a nightmare to work with).

But you need to take into consideration that this is a totally new system. It will probably come only with the drivers for hardware approved by MS (like with Windows Phone). So unless some other Win8 tablets are going to use exactly same hardware parts with same configuration we wouldn't have anywhere to get those drivers from. We don't even know if Win8 would support Tegra2 instruction set which may be missing some instruction sets available in newer processors.
Remember who you are dealing with.... Microsoft.
Remember who is pushing out Surface Tabs.. (sometime in the next decade).... Microsoft.
And I will guess, the hardware drivers will be extremely closed source. And the tabs will probably run on different hardware than the current tabs.
A tech can say "well, your tablet certainly has the hardware to run it". Don't mean diddly squat unless it's the same hardware they support. And I would guess, MS ain't gonna support Android tabs. Just like iOS.
And look who they partnered with..... Nokia. The last of the dumbphone manufacturers, who are just about to go under if android phones get any cheaper. Sorta says how "this" story is gonna pan out. "Too little.... Too late"
Windows8 touch on an A500? Ain't gonna happen. They already have a W500 (which nobody wants).
RIP Win8...... Stick with PC's.

Actually, the main issue why it won't run is less to do with the hardware drivers than you might think.
The main cause is down to the bootloader and the interaction between it and the OS. Even if you managed to get RT somehow on to an A500, you'll never get it to boot. It would be easier to write your OS from scratch.

I would rather think the oposite as it should be definitelly easier for a hacker/cracker to remove requirement for specific bootloader (e.g. encrypted one as MS requires from hardware makers) than to fetch working drivers.
That way or another there are just too many problems to overcome to make it work.

Unfortu'ently the algorithm used to crack it wouldnt expire in my life time completely useless it would still be sweet though hmmm....
Don't android tablets run on ARM architecture? Thats incompatible with Windows right there.

Microsoft has said that they will not be selling the Win8RT OS seperately and that the only way to get it is pre-installed on a tablet. Because of that, and that the A500 doesn't meet the resolution, multi-touch, or have appropraite drivers, the only way to get Win8RT on the A500 is through hacking of the OS.
So it can be done, but it isn't going to be easy, nor would it be legal due to the licencing issues (you can't buy the winRT os without a tab).
For everybody that wants Windows on their tab....

Much easier... and they have tons of them left for a reason.......

The W500 doesn't really even factor into this equation. It's Win7. Windows 8 was specifically designed to be tablet-friendly. Windows 7 on a touch device is... problematic at best.
Better to look at what Acer ~IS~ doing in the Win8 arena:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/03/acer-iconia-w700-w510-windows-8/
But the real problem is Microsoft mandating what will and will not be allowed to run Windows 8 RT. Their secure boot garbage and requirements for locked bootloaders on RT will be a huge issue. Aside from the aforementioned issues with device drivers, which will be a HUGE issue, Microsoft is doing all it can to block just anyone from installing the final release on unsupported devices.
Of course, with enough time and people, all this can be bypassed and someone, somewhere will make it happen, but the question will be... Will it be worth the effort? We have a great tablet that runs great on ICS and JB. Why mess with a good thing? Windows 8 RT is a gimped version of Windows that's made for phones. The full Windows 8 is a resource-hog that will clog an a500 and bring it to a standstill. I just don't see a need for this.
Hi guys
with a google search I found the file. cab with the driver (Tegra2) for windows 8.
If you want I can upload it online
