I can't update contacts - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I jus installed RoyalGinger and I can't get my contacts to update. I installed the ROM twice thinking it would fix it. I only seem to get one contact to come up. Im not sure if there is a way to manually do it. Please help

Did u log in to your gmail account?

Yes I logged in just like I do anytime I install A new ROM. It's strange just one person from my contacts comes up.

try
Code:
menu button > settings > account's & Sync > Google Account> contact

I tried that and everything is checked where it should be and still no other contacts are added.
Also should'nt everything from my sim card come up anyway? I just assumed everything on the sim
would always be there no matter what.

Nope. The SIM card is 100% independent from the Google Accounts and on board memory.

Just to make sure I am not confusing anyone. What I mean by contacts is not just emails and names from google. I'm talking about all the names and phone numbers on my sim card. None of those seem to come up. Which is why i'm confused. I allways thought if your phone is in service and you can make calls and use data, you should have access to all the info on the sim card.

Problem solved! I found out that I can go under contacts and export it all to the SD card and then just import all that on the new ROM. RoyalGinger is awesome! I can't believe how much faster my phone got.

Double contacts in SMS?

Anyone else getting every entry twice in the contacts list in SMS? I've selected contacts only in the options on the people tab, and i've enabled the hide SIM contacts fix in BsB Tweaks, both made no difference. I even applied the new SMS hotfix, still the same.
Hi ! Me too ... Any suggestions ? Thanks~
Be careful! Do not just delete one of the two.. Here that resulted in a mass SMS loss where I had to restore from MyPhone.
Open up Outlook and see if the Contacts are all double. That just happened with me too. I deleted every second contact from the two listed there and now it's all ok again.
Right well it's definitely a case of it's showing both SIM contacts and phone contacts, rather than a general duplication. I proved this by adding a contact on the phone (but not the SIM), and it only showed that contact once in the SMS contacts.
Yes I still have this problem too. I have asked about this previously......

......but I still can't get this one sorted out!
Did you guys synch with MyPhone? Maybe that caused the duplications.
Oh, sim contacts.. Yeah..
I just 'fixed it' by deleting ALL my SIM contacts and syncing with MyPhone every time I install a new rom or hard-reset.
Well there is that, but i'm looking for more of a cure than a remedy!
Is there a tweak in registry or something that we could do to fix it? Anyone?

deleting your sim contacts IS the cure. sim contacts are a throwback to when phones didn't have their own phone book so all contacts were sim contacts.
the problemwith sim contacts used that if you update a contact, then restore from sim (or just as annoying merge from sim) then you end up with thee wrong details for that contact.
best to just get rid off the sim ones altogether.
Agreed, but the sim contacts are there as a backup, if for example you have to put it in another phone for any reason. Anyway, you can select which contacts to display in the phonebook contacts list, so why shouldnt we able to apply the same choices to the contact list displayed in messaging? Just thought someone with registry knowledge could work out a fix maybe?

deleting SIM contacts isn't the cure my dear. People save their contact in their SIM for reasons. For me, Its in case of emergency... e.g my HD2 suddenly broke down (OMG!!) and I desperate need to call someone WHICH I DON'T REMEMBER THE NUMBER, then in this case i can simply remove the SIM card from my HD2 and slide it in any phones that i can find on that time. And I'm quite sure there's lots of HD2 users out there which share the same thought with me
SO... still the same thing... Is there a CURE??? desperately need it...
i have this problem, did anybody work this out?

3 sim card questions

1. Has anyone noticed a really long delay when adding a contact to the sim card? Infact i think you have to soft reset for it to show!
2. How do you copy a contact made in the phone memory to the sim card?
3. Contacts can be selected in 'contacts' to show: all, sim or phone but in text messaging you don't have that option, all contacts are shown, is there a way round that?
Real basic stuff that seems to have been overlooked???

lol... get with the times mate... using a SIM card to store your contacts is OOOOOLLLLLDD skool. Most people use some sort of synchronisation nowadays to store their PIM data. Especially if you have a windows mobile device.
In answer to your questions:
1. Not noticed this myself... i actually copied all of my contacts (190 odd in one hit) from phone contacts to SIM and it took about 3 seconds. They showed up immediately.
2. Open the contact under "all people"... click on menu->save contact to sim
3. Only way round that i can think of would be to maybe use groups? Create two groups... one called "SIM" and the other "PHONE"... assign contacts to each group accordingly. I do agree that you shouldnt have to do this though, which is why i have deleted my contacts from the SIM card again. (I was only testing the function out anyway)

You could try using the Microsoft My Phone app that comes pre-installed on the HD2... that will sync your contacts, texts, pictures etc with your online Live ID.

Contacts 2 SIM missing ?

hi im running a 2.2 rom Froyd right now on my hero and a friend of mine with a Nexus one 2.2 was stressing that he couldnt copy his contacts onto his SIM card, so i checked my hero also cas i could have sworn i saw that option on my 2.1 sense rom before but on 2.2 it appears missing.
So is there any hacks/apps that enable contacts 2 Sim card as this would be very useful
thanks guys
There might be an app for this?
I've never liked sim contacts on android, and always discourage them.

No no i mean i want to copy my contacts BACK to my sim card so i can use them again on another phone --
if im using froyd i import my sim contacts onto the phone - i was asking how to import them back to the sim card as i have new contacts that i dont like to loose when either reflashing or changing phone
a nokia 3310 offers this feature LOL (No i dont want to use a 3310) lol
No, I 100% understand what you want to do.
Use the market to search for "contacts to sim", and you'll see apps (many free) like Copy to SIM Card, Contact2SIM etc.
Give one of them a go
thanks Pulser , Contact2SIM worked like a gem
Or just sync your phone contacts to your Google account so you can always access them on any device or computer.

True, and that's what I normally recommend, but the OP was after a way to then put the SIM into his other phone and use it.
So in that case, Contacts to SIM is the best way

[Q] Trade out my SIM card - transferring info

Currently using the card that came with my tmo V330 and also rode in a V195 before going into this Vibrant. Couldn't access the web with the supplied card, so easiest solution was to use the old one. I know now that tmo needs info on any new card before granting web access, so that prob is solved - just needing proper method of transferring my contacts, etc info to the new card.
Directions will be appreciated!
I'm pretty sure t mobile can do it for you for free

If I were you, I'd make sure I had a Google account sync'd with my phone first of all. Then, put the old (the one with contacts on it) SIM card on the Vibrant, copy all the contacts to the phone (Contacts -> Settings -> More -> SIM Management -> SIM to Phone), then to go "Import/Export" in Contacts -> Settings -> More. From here, click on Export to SD Card to copy your phone contacts (which used to be your SIM contacts) to a file. Then go back to Import/Export and click on Import from SD Card and choose to import it to your Google account. Now all your contacts are saved in your Google account. From here, take your old SIM out and put your new SIM in and rejoice. Just remember to save new contacts straight to your Google account and not to the phone, and you never have to worry about losing contacts or transferring them via a piece of hardware ever again. Also, should you break/brick/otherwise damage your phone, you can always just pull all your contacts down from Google in a matter of seconds. Far more convenient.
Thanks to both who offered solutions
Opiomorph - you Sir, are the reason the term "Guru" was created... At the point where I was asked, "Are you sure you want to export your contacts?", I wussed and had to crack and consume a cold one. Rally.. Eventually my trembling finger hit the accept button, and I watched my contacts shoot to t the Google account.
Wrote down the numbers from the new SIM and installed card to phone. Booted up and called tmo to verify new card. Re-established login with Google.
Perfect! Everything is working and my contacts now show copy to Google account plus to new SIM.
Your concise instructions have made my day!!
To others who follow, first mention of settings refers to that while in the"Contacts"mode.
Thanks for pointing that out, I edited my post to reflect that. Glad I could help but...did you really have to drink so early in the morning? It is the weekend, I suppose. :3
Yes, but it was 5 o'clock somewhere, (smiles)

Syncing contacts with Google

Hi all, I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere.
Basically, I want to be able to sync my current phone/SIM card contacts with Google.
Every time I create a new contact on the phone it gives me the option to save it to either the phone, the SIM card, or Google. I always choose Google since I want to be able to access them on the cloud some time in case I ever switch phones or brick it.
My question is, I have quite a few contacts already on the phone and on the SIM card that aren't saved on the cloud. Is there any way at all I can do a complete sync so I can put all my phone/SIM card contacts onto Google the same way adding a new contact sends them there?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
There is a workaround: You can save all your contacts as a vcf by going to contacts, options, "Import/Export", "Export to SD card". Then select Import/Export again, and Import from the SD card to your google account.
From here (I'm a new user so can't make the link live, sorry): code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4236
Also same solution listed here: google.com/support/forum/p/gmail/thread?tid=30a6a99f562bbb28
I don't know how to get Google's attention to fix this.
Wow, that worked perfectly, thank you.
Slightly inconvenient that now I have doubles of every contact, but I simply went to my settings and checked only the "show google contacts" option and unchecked the SIM and Phone options.
Would you happen to know if there's another way to make the duplicates go away?

Ha, I guess I could do that. Though I'm not 100% sure about moving all to the cloud. There's always the possibility that my phone could break and I not have any money to get a backup smartphone right away. It'd be convenient to at least keep some contacts on my SIM card just in case I have to switch over to a dumbphone at some point.
Thank you though.
You can delete and merge dups with "Contact Analyzer 2" from the Market. Feel free to hit "thanks" if you appreciate my pointers!
