[Q] NY Tabs sluggish to recharge? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

One recent review of a NY Tab said it was taking a very very long time to recharge....
http://www.pcworld.com/article/229763/samsung_galaxy_tab_101_wifi_a_worthy_rival_to_the_ipad_2.html
from the article: "Another thing I noticed in my casual testing: The 7000-mAh battery took inordinately long to charge. After 2 hours plugged in, my test unit had reached only about 30 percent charged. The battery is rated for up to 9 hours of use."
anyone heard of this, or does someone who actually has a NY model have anything to say about that?

The charging current probably is written on the charger, anyone can take a look?
If what they said is true, then the charger is charging at about 1A and it should take about 7 hours to fully charge...
I'm not sure i want a Galaxy tab 10.1 anymore.
EDIT:
Is this the charger that is included? http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/ETA-P10JBEGSTA-reviews
Samsung site says it charges at 2A, so the 7000mah battery should be fully charged in about 3,5 hours.

This is true, it charges twice as slow as my Xoom maybe slower. and it seems to drain faster also(during use anyways) and my Xoom is OC'd @ 1700.

This was the only review I've read so far that mentioned slow charging. I do know when I had a Xoom it seemed to charge fully in @ an hour or so. I'm hoping that its charging time is not a big problem for the Tabs, since I'm thinking of getting one.

Mine charges slow over USB, but with the wall charger, it's at least 30%/hour

I noticed that the io tab took a long time its first few charges. Now it doesn't take too long to charge. Few hours at most.

Same here the first one took hours and now it's a few. The charge really does last after that.

I checked the compatibility list... All of the 10.1 are compatible with that charger.
Found it at Amazon for 32 and change...
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Detachable-Charger-ETA-P10JBEGSTA/dp/B004CGHDEO
I will be buying one or two of these depending on the one that ships with the tablet. Can we get confirmation on the one that is included?

I'm recharging mine right now from a complete discharge.
Exactly 2 hours in and my battery is at 44%.
Do probably about 4 hours for a full charge.
I'm using the OEM wall charger.

If you guys are having issues the quickest way to charge something is by turning it completely off. im sure that will speed up the charge a lot at least by 50%...also the first few charges are the ones that typically take longer. Eventually the battery will charge faster.

Nope, I unplug it when its fully charged and only charge when there is less than 10% left.
I ordered a USB 3.0 extension cable. One of the reviewers for it said it worked perfectly for his TF. One of the most annoying things I found was not being able to charge from the computer while I used the device. The plug was way too short for the wall. This one is awesome and very cheap. Here is a link:
6ft USB 3.0 A Male to A Female Extension 28/24AWG Cable (Gold Plated)
Quotes from the reviews of it:
"Powers and charges the ASUS Transformer tablet when used with the ASUS Transformer power adapter. Also works as data cable when connected to PC."
"i bought 5 of these for random usb charging extension for mainly tablets - ipad, transformer, galaxy tab. these work perfectly fine and charge at full speed."
It's better for Lithium-Ion batteries to drain little and top-up as often as you can so I plug it in whenever I'm not using it.

I hear a lot of back and forth about this. Do you have a source for this info? (Not doubting you, just, like I said, I constantly hear people changing their minds on this)
EDIT: Nevermind, maybe I am thinking way back or something. I am finding most info points to "Don't deep drain if you don't have to"... just google lithium ion battery care if you thought the same as me.
I'm curious, i just got my transformer today, in the instructions it says to charge it for 8 hours. But I had full charge after 3 hours. Do I still need to charge it for another 5 hours?

yes you should, the battery needs overcharged for premiere usage. but after that don't overcharging your battery in daily usage which the OP is asking.
I charge mine a few hours at night, but unplug it overnight. Since I have the dock, I don't even come close to running out of battery during the day so I leave it uncharged until night time again.
In this case, my Tablet is always 100% and my dock battery drains and gets recharged. I have no idea what my battery life will be later on hehe.
Lithium ion are good for about 300 to 400 charge cycles...usually closer to 300. It is a good idea to charge fully and then simply let it run down. ...i am a tech at a lathe national company. We see trouble tickets from users about batteries on laptops frequently. If the device sits plugged in all the time your battery will last a little over a year before it's about 50% effective. I have no source for my data, just experience.
Hope that helps

Battery Charging taking too long!

The S2 takes forever to charge the battery. Coming fron the iphone 4 i suspect this takes ay laeast twice as long to charge!
Considering the battery performance isnt that great, this is a double whammy!
What do you guus think?

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. I'm always charging it when I'm at home to keep it fully charged, in case I'm going out.

Im using nokia charger 1.2A and HTC charger 1A and also i have 0.7A all of them takes about 3 hours may be hardware bug?
I've been using a BB charger for it, and thought maybe that was the reason. Glad to know it isn't.

Yep, I confirm.
Charging takes around 3 hours.
I can use it almost 48 hours before it needs to be charged again. So it is not really annoying.
Stock SGS 2 with official battery charger and a full drained empty battery 3.5 hours to charge to 100% .

About 3 hours here which is fine, charging from the supplied charger connected to electricity mains. Are you charging via the USB connector? It will take a lot longer, something called trickle charge or something like that.

No it takes the normal time but if its to slow for you dont drain it or sell it .

I noticed this when my brother bought the same phone. His takes a ridiculous amount of time to charge, maybe 1% per 10 mins or so and it gets really hot while doing so.
Mine on the other hand doesn't get hot at all and charges at least 3 times faster than his.
please state charge state, ages, fast normal etc.
firmware and revison thanx
The charger shipped with my S2 has only 700mA...
especially if you are using the phone (worst: gaming) while charging it seems to get never finished . I guess the current drain doesn't left much for the charging.
So i'm using my old HTC-chargers (one AC=>USB and AC=> MicroUSB) witch both supplies 1000mA.... ~43% more in theory
Hard to say how big the advantage is in fact, but it makes a difference.
Also keep in mind, that a standard USB-Port supplies max. 500mA, depending on other USB-devices even much less. I also read that the charging result is "better" if you not using it in the meantime.
You can buy USB-Chargers up to 2100mA (e.g Amazon), but i have doubts that this will be improve the charging time because on the type-label behind the battery is written Rated : 3,7V-1000mA. Even more current wouldn't not damage the device (afaik!!!), the device or the battery could not charge faster.
Maybe somebody knows about what is meant by the the 1000mA exactly. Would be nice if the device could be charge a little bit faster.
Otherwise i am going to buy a 2nd battery with an external charger.
greetings
I found this on Android Forum

USB charging is slow on the S2 as it uses trickle charging
"Trickle" is an exaggeration.
The phone can tell whether it's connected to USB or a mains charger. If the latter, it limits charge current to 650mA. If the former 400mA.
It will charge faster on the mains but not loads faster.

My other cell phones are fully charged in 2 hours, more or less. And yes, I'm considering selling it, because I like to use my gadgets and the SGSII doesn't admit an intensive use without running out of battery, unless you have a second battery.

Yeah, I do sleep more than 3.5 hours per day and I try to charge it every night, but the problem is when the phone runs out of battery in the middle of the day and you don't have 3.5 to spend in charging it fully.
I think the iphone 4 is only a 1420Mah battery if I remember correctly while ours is 1650. Sure, it takes perhaps another hour to charge but I don't find it a big deal. It does appear that the first 50% charges faster then the second half as well but that could just be my imagination.
I have read that Samsung phones charge slower so that the battery life will be longer than that of those other phones such as HTC where the phone charges a lot faster. I'd rather get another year out of my battery and it take longer but do admit 3.5 hours does seem like a while.
this topic has been covered. teh SGS2 battery driver is capped at 650 mA for wall charging, 450 mA for USB charging. this code resides in the battery driver.
someone could compile a new kernel with this value raised. other phones like the nexus one charge at 980 mA for wall charger, 480 for USB.
samsung capped charge current, likely for heat issues, nobody really knows.
same. take long time to charge and heating if charge n gaming. the hottest spot at camera side

6 hours to recharge?

I recharged my Galaxy Tab 10.1 yesterday from a 15% remaining charge.
I powered it off and used the wall charger. It took almost 6 hours to charge to 100%!
Is this normal or is there something wrong with the battery?
Thanks!
Mine was slow at first too. But now seems to have gotten quicker.

Yep, noticed it took about 3 hrs to go 40% charging. Not sure why there is such a drastic difference from the Xoom which could charge from 10% to full in little over an hour with similar drain to GT.

Can you please quantify what quicker means?
We have a rather large battery in the device, while I agree 6 hours is abit much, it should be quicker at 2 amps.
On the other hand, I sit in on the charger at night before I go to bed. I am definately a heavy user as well, and the battery lasts me all day with atleast 30 to 40% left over by bed time (this includes a 1.5 hour commute each direction using Waze, the GPS, and wifi tethered to my phone, 2 gmail accounts polling every 15 min, web surfing throughout the day, and playing games during my morning and afternoon constitutions .. I know.. too much info)..
So I can live with a longer charge time, at least for now..
I charged my GT Tab completely before using it the first time. Then I drained it down to about 9%. I timed my first full charge from 9% to 100%, it took exactly 6 hours and 4 min. My Xoom charged in half the time. I am hoping it gets better like I have heard from different people.

i believe the xoom's charger is 16watts or more. i can't really remember, but it's got the highest rated charger b/t the xoom, tf, and gt10.1.
I think that's just wishful thinking on their part. How does a battery suddenly learn to charge itself faster. You make it sound like the battery is a muscle you can work out. The thing takes forever to charge but it also has excellent battery life. So as long as you don't find yourself in a hurry to travel without time to charge the battery should last you almost all day.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I charged the device fully before use. Used it down to 10%, plugged it in and charged to full powered off. This took around 6 hours. The second time I charged it from around 14-15% It took about 4 hours. I have charged it twice more since from almost zero, and it's taking about two hours.
Remember the math:
7000 mAh battery
2000 mAh charger
That means from drain to full if the screen is off, about 3-4 hours. If you have the screen or device on and it's doing anything, it's using some of that incoming charge, so will increase to 4, 5, 6 or more hours to fully charge.
Gets even worse if using an aftermarket charger, say a 800 mah or 1000 mah charger like the iPhone or Kindle charger...can then take 10-14 hours to fully charge, hehe.
It's funny how people say it charges quicker after a while, when that's not logical, you just don't notice it as much going from 65% to 100% as you noticed when it went from 15% to 100% the first time, hehe

i think what happens is that as the battery calibration gets more accurate it finds where to quick charge and where to trickle in the appropriate levels.

one thing i dislike about note10.1

the charging time. this thing takes a really loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to charge (about 5+hours). i know it's 7000mah, but my xoom (6X00mah) takes only about 3 hours , and both of them have almost same battery life (note is slightly better)

Mine charges up to about 98% in about 3 hours from about 30%
Im on the original firmware on the 8013 white version. Last night i went from 3%- 79% in a little over 2 hours. I cant complain about that. Also, i turn it off when i do that. When i charge it while on, i put it in power saver mode, and it charges well enough for me. I think the first time it charged it took about 5 hours...but since then, very good.

I alternate between Note 10.1 and Nexus 7 while the other one is charging. Regardless, charging time hasn't been an issue and am happy with it. Note 10.1 gets about 8 hrs of on screen time versus about 6 hrs on Nexus 7.
My first Note 10.1 (White 16gb) took awhile to charge, it was much longer then expected. I even posted a similar question here and had the same responses, minus the idiot. I exchanged it for a 32gb version and the second one charges much more quickly, leaving me to believe the first Note I had was faulty.

Great story bro...I wish I were that creative..
Btw everyone, there are no differences between the deep grey and the white other than aesthetics. And the only difference between the 16 and 32 gb models was how much you were willing to shell out for more storage space. I am just getting tired of people posting a paragraph describing their device before getting on with describing a problem...all you need is which version you have ie, 8000, 8013 etc. Flame me if you want, it is my opinion.

Exynos variant does not support fast charging while Qualcomm does...
35 hours or more of total battery life with 6 1/2 to 7 hours of screen time. I play a lot of intense games so my screen time is lower, but I've easily been able to get 5 1/2 of screen time out of this thing playing Galaxy on Fire 2 and it's like one of the most demanding mobile games available.

the exnyos does have a full powered charge at up to 80% then trickles to 100%. it takes mine about 4-5 hours to go 0-100. it doesn't use qualcomms quick charge tech, but it doesn't trickle the whole way. if it takes 7 hrs then the charger or cable could be bad or the tablet may not be telling the charger to send 2amps.

It's pretty slow. Almost 30% slower than the N10.1-12 a lot of us came from. It's the move from Samsung's proprietary 30-pin connector to standard microUSB. The N10 using a pogo pin charger (vs. its standard microUSB) is about 30-40% faster than what's shown below.

that article was what concerned me before i bought the tablet, but i went ahead and got it anyway. the only time that mine had actually nearly taken that long was on the first few charges. sometimes it would be stuck at trickle and wouldn't pull the full power (i actually only get an average of 1.6A from the stock charger and cable - I've never verified the volts. i could stick it on my killawatt and see what it pulls. after those few quirks i don't see charge times as long as anand has reported. it's always that last 80% that's a killer. it seem to take from 1.5-2hrs depending. i can go from 37% to 80% in 2hrs then i have to wait nearly as long for the last 20%. i think it's a battery saving technique that samsung is using. toyota's reports showed that charging the battery to 80% capacity extened the life. on my 700t there's a battery saving option that won't charge the battery over 80%.
Quickcharge on USB 2.0?

But will Quickcharge still work because the first unit utilizing it is the Samsung Note 3 and that one has USB 3.0, Note 10.1 2014 only has USB 2.0?

USB 3.0 doesn't impact charging time, at least not yet. And the S-800 version of the N10.1-14 does use the same SoC as the N3 and someone here with a SM-P605 reported getting a full charge in about 5 hours and 80% in 3.
Charging is an interesting story on the Note 3, but primarily because of what doesn’t change. The Note 3 continues to use Samsung’s tablet charging specification and charger, which has 2 amps of maximum output. The Note 3 draws 2 amps over a considerable amount of the charging curve, like other Samsung devices (in the linear part of the charge curve). USB 3.0 doesn’t change things up here quite yet with the new supported charge voltages that are coming eventually with the power delivery specification.
The Note 3 does charge faster overall compared to the SGS4 however thanks in part to the new PMIC (PM8941) which is part of the overall 8974 platform story.

Just curious how accurate screen time readings are. Mine seems to be off. I've been on my device all morning and it seems to not reflect that.

lol, that's actually a feature that Donald Trump insisted be included in all white and black Notes to remind people they aren't part of the exclusive 1% who actually have solid gold Notes. Interestingly the solid gold Note consistently shows 1%.
See this is the odd thing - I had this tablet a month ago but got it exchanged because I found a cheaper one anyways on that tablet I am positive I was getting 6hrs screen time which was some youtube videos but majority was browsing the internet and that was it.
However on this new one I just got 9hrs30mins and that was with watching a 2hr movie streaming online, about 2hrs worth of streaming tv shows, loads of web browsing and also a little bit of Youtube...Personally I think this is awesome screen time (Mind you it's my first tablet so nothing to compare to but still). I am very happy with charge (5hrs) and battery drain on this tablet - very nice indeed.
Would love to squeeze 11 hours out of this like someone had in the earlier posts but that seems a tad difficult considering I already have brightness pretty low and all pointless apps disabled.
