[Q] Invalid Serial Number? - Eee Pad Transformer General

Has anyone had a problem registering transformer device on vip.asus.com?
When I'm trying to do this - website complains that my serial number is invalid (I double checked it and it's correct). Has anyone had something similar?
I have a sneaky suspicion that this might explain why I'm not getting an OTA 3.1 update...
Cheers,
Irek

I think it's much more likely that you just aren't inputting the code correctly. The 0's and O's are hard to tell apart but they are actually different characters. Also the B's and 8's. This won't have anything to do with the fota update either, people get that regardless of if they have registered or not.

I ran into this earlier. Are you trying to put the serial number that is found in settings - about tablet? What you need to use I'd the one on the box or on the sticker inside the warranty pamphlet.
Don't know why they differ and was gonna create a thread to see if I'm the only one.

Yes. I was using one from the box. Number had two zeros, so I tried all four combinations replacing zeros with letter 'O' - but no luck. I contacted ASUS support (sent them a photo of the sticker) - will wait for their response.

I had the same issue, then I contacted Asus and they advised me that the first sign should be letter B and the third-letter O.
The rest are definately 8-s and zero's

I got an initial response from ASUS support. I sent them a photo of my box - so they can decode number for themself. Here is a response:
Dear Irek,
Thank you for your email.
The serial number is not being recognized by our systems. I have tried two different databases and still it states-the serial number is incorrect.
Could you advise on where did you purchase the unit?

Got mine from amazon.co.uk (so not a dodgy source). Asked them to do some more investigation. Truly bizarre - asus seems to have problems with tracking it's own shipments.
---
EDIT: got a final response from ASUS support - they started internal investigation how this could happen and recommended to return device for a refund (as it might take a while)

Thanks PT_Monkey. I thought the third letter was a ZERO instead a O. Your post helped

Also registering your tablet on their websit edoes nothing to help get the update to you faster, I'm not sure why this rumor started. Their OTA just seems to randomly happen and I have a feeling overall there are just issues with it and it has nothing to do with your serial #.

i jsut registered mine. i had an issue with the first "O" the O's are wider than the zeros.

I returned the TF today due to the serial number coming up invalid in Asus database and being unable to receive the 3.1 update.. I have read in other threads that quite a number of people have had the same situation and Asus explains saying that the unit was never entered into the database and an internal investigation is ongoing with no timetable for resolution. . Also it was stated that the system looks for serial number before sending out the update to the devicel It has been reported that they also said to return for exchange or refund. I really really liked this device but could not justify keeping it if I might run into warranty issues somewhere down the line, due to the serial number showing up invalid. Great device though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE on ACER Registration and UDPATES

Just wanted to bring this to your attention...
Aparently, there are three ways to register your product through ACER at this time. Three separate databases. Three separate departments. NONE LINKED TO EACH OTHER!!!...
What am I trying to say? Here it is...
I spoke with a representative from ACER today at this number:
1-800-571-2237I advised that I had yet to receive my update and would like to know where it is... I was transferred to a level 2 hardware/software person who advised me that ACER has THREE databases right now and that if you want your update it is best that you contact them directly to register your device and get the update pushed out soon.
He was not able to push the update to my device but did state that neither the Tablet ACER REGISTRATION nor the Online REGISTRATION i did for the tablet showed up in his database...
I am sharing this with you because, well, if you are still waiting for your update, make sure you call them and get yourself registered. ACER is working on getting these databases consolidated into one but until then... Dont risk not being in the correct database... jejeje
PS. Once I got off the phone I was given an oportunity to take a survey for the A500 directly... needless to say, great oportunity to express your sentiments over the locked bootloader... jejeje
i never registered my device and i got the update right when it came out.
I went and bought a second ICONIA to make sure that it was not my system files that were corrupt... I have registered it and still... no update... at least, not a legitimate update, cus I know I can push the updated file system to the tablet but... I WANT OTA!!! jejeje...

I used the update.zip linked from this forum to update my device. I lost all wifi after updating. I had to root and fix it.
Maybe there are some very minor hardware differences that are holding back some specific upgrade rollouts.
Multiple SNID numbers
After bricking my tablet, I went through the Chinese update and then the US conversion. My SNID on the original registration and what currently shows on the Acer registration page on the tablet is different than what is shown in the settings->about tablet->device information.
Anybody else have a similar experience, or know if this can or should be changed?
Is ur serial different too? I think this # is hardware linked and not software... should be thesame # as what the box has... I will look through mine. I returned the 'extra' tablet i had after my tests so there is no way 2 go back nd see what happened there... I have noticed that the flexrom changes someinfo there...

Mine is TF101.
Same issue.
Anyone found a fix?
Also (more importantly): should the S/N in the menue be the same as the label on the TF101?
If yes: is there a way to change the S/N so the menu shows the correct number?
There are two seral numbers on the device one is the B## number the other is in the software so you need to go to settings/about to find it. If you are on a custom rom that may have changed

Thanks for the quick reply.
Yup, I have the B70xxx S/N on the device and a 16 digit number in the software.
I previously did root/unroot my TF101 but now back on stock. Does rooting/unrooting have something to do with the mismatch? or is this normal to have the 2 different numbers?
Like other posters: when I enter the S/N found in settings I get the message "please enter correct SN". When I enter the B70 SN I get the message "not supported on Honeycomb" (even though I'm on ICS).
The serial number in the menu is the device's specific ID number, this is used when you are in ADB or APX mode, if for example you are programming multiple TF101's simultaneously, to discern which device you are communicating with. As far as I can tell, the S/N on the case is the MFG Serial, not the Device ID, and thus Asus should be tracking it by the serial number, although as mentioned if you flash your device with another firmware, this may cause conflict with Asus' database of S/Ns..I haven't tested this to be sure, but I am thinking that the device ID will remain the same regardless of which ROM you flash, as this seems to be tied to the bootloader, which is what the PC communicates with (for example, my bootloader got wiped while flashing Ubuntu, and after flashing back to stock the PC would not recognize my device until I reflashed the ICS bootloader..so if you have flashed your bootloader this may also cause a conflict with Asus' database, I can't confirm for sure).
I will do some investigating when I get home to see if flashing ROMs and bootloaders will alter the device's ID number, or if I can otherwise discern what exactly will cause conflict like this, i.e. flashing a custom ROM, flashing a modded stock ROM, flashing a new bootloader, etc. That is, provided my device will be recognized to begin with (as stated, I have had to flash the bootloader once, so that may cause a problem for me).
There are some ADB commands that will pull up this device ID number (and maybe serial number too, not too sure on that) and I will see if this number changes at all while flashing custom ROMs..either way, I'm sure there is some sort of algorithm that is responsible for tying these two numbers together (similar to the bootloader in the OG Xbox and the serial number of the device/HDD, all these numbers were used to create the unlock key for the HDD/BIOS, there is more than likely a similar function tying these numbers together for Asus as well). Though it will take some testing to confirm whether these numbers can be altered in the device's memory.
This may help chatch find his stolen TF since he knows his MFG S/N..
I also had my Transformer stolen a few days ago. As soon as I realized it had happened I tried to push some apps to it( plan b, other tracking apps) but I was too late I guess. Maybe it was already wiped. It had the Revolver ICS Rom installed on it and I checked the tracking option in settings.
When I entered the model serial number on the original packing box (Luckily? I still had it) I got that same error about it not working on the TF101.
It really sucks knowing someone is having fun with my sweet baby

A much better free alternative (all Android, not only ASUS) is the app androidlost on the market.
I've also just tried both serial numbers, same message as you guys got. Obviously an error by Asus. I'm totally stock USA ICS firmware

Remember folks the O in B5O, B6O, B7O, etc is a O, as in Ohh, not 0 as in zero. All other 0s in serial number are zero.
Either way this doesn't work with tf101 right now.

I did too.
But my hopes are low. They did not reply to a previous case I opened online (dock issue). Had to phone Asus Australia to open a case again.
I think everyone who have this problem should log a case with them. Maybe this will put enough pressure on them to take notice.

I work at Best Buy here in the US and bought my Asus Transformer about a month ago. I've tried to use that Device Tracker thing too but keeps telling me the same thing it's been telling y'all. Only thing is, the serial number I have starts with C1O. Does anyone else have something similiar?

DOESN'T matter what serial you have nor which one you use, either the one on the sticker or one in the settings menu. They've obviously messed something up on their end. It won't work with our tf101s

Dear Mr. Ginley,
I do apologize for your inconvenience and we do aware of the issues. In the meantime have you tried factory reset feature after the latest firmware update? Please backup your personal data and try this method if you have not done so. Please do let me if the problem still persists afterward.

RMA Serial # Questions!

I bought my Nexus in July and it was affected by the screen flickering problem (No big deal) but now its having an issue with the digitizer.
every time i touch the right side of the screen it clicks the left side (i.e. if I touch back space it types a Q instead)
anyway on to my issue the SSN on my box no longer is the same as the serial number in the about screen were they the same or have i messed it up somehow when rooting and having fun with MY device!?
I have reset the tablet with the Root toolbox to the default ICS from google and locked the bootloader
Are you putting a zero instead of an "O" after the month digit on the Asus VIP site?
example. It should be C7O not C70. A lot of people on here mistake the O for a zero.
** I just reread about your number in the About settings page is different? Have you tried entering both, as long as its valid it should register

No I called them and gave them the info from the box cause the Serial number on the tablet in the Settings<About<Status does not match the one on the box or on the sticker that was on the nexus it doesn't even start with C6O anymore its a O15 now.
I don't know if it was always like that or did something happen while I was playing around with other roms
I am just worried that sending a tablet RMA with the wrong serial or a serial that doesn't even match the device will cause major problems!
I flashed the original images via fast boot for return and also noticed serial number had changed on device as well.but the store exchanged it anyways but they did notice. I said maybe it was the ota update? They did not care.

I am starting to second guess the RMA with ASUS as I am seeing a lot of bad rep for their RMA process. Maybe I will just look into fixing it myself. I have the tools and know how if I knew what was causing the problem.:cyclops:

[Q] Serial number different?

Hey guys. Just curious if anyone else has this issue.
The serial number on my Nexus 4 box is completely different than the serial number listed under settings/about phone/status. The IMEI matches. Now, I didn't take the phone apart or anything to check the serial number that would be listed someowhere inside the device, but I am going to guess it doesnt match what my phone says.
My Galaxy Nexus had the same issue. The serial number on the sticker under the battery was different than the one under settings/about phone/status. I assumed that the issue on the G-Nex came about because I had it unlocked and flashed some various ROMS from time to time. I asked the question in the Gnex forum and no one else seemed to have the problem.
On this phone however, I haven't rooted it or flashed anything. I did unlock the bootloader (to prevent losing everything in the event I do decide to root in the future). The other day I was registering the device with my insurance and needed to get the IMEI and SN. I had both the phone and box and noticed that the Nexus 4 has this issue as well.
Anyone else not match?
Oh, and when I searched I saw a thread over in the GS3 forum where someone else had the same issue but the way it was explained over there doesnt seem to make sense in my situation. That phone was rooted and running custom ROM. When they put stock on the SN matched again. I am running stock and unrooted so not quite the same.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Does the serial number on the phone match the Google Play order sheet? If so, I'd use that one.

The serial number on the Google Play packing sheet is the IMEI number. It says "serial number" but it is the IMEI number. That matches the IMEI on the phone, not the serial number.
I am talking about the serial number on the phone and the serial number on the box. They do not match. The IMEI numbers do match.
The number in the settings menu is the CSSN. What that means, I have no idea.
Well at least you have some idea.
Does anyone else have this problem though? I think it is strange if its only me.
Same problem with my gnex. That is.... Problem on my phone but not other people's. Makes me feel like something I did changed it. But I didn't do anything other than unlock. strange.

Same here, the serial in settings->
about phone->status is completely different than the one on the box. It doesn't even look like it follows the same format. The one on the box does look like it partially matches the IMEI.

Everybody's numbers are different. They don't represent the same thing. The one on the phone is the CSSN and the one on the box is the SSN.
There is no "problem."

S/N on package does not match to the one stated in "Status" menu

Just got my N4, and noted that the serial number on the package is way different than the one shown in "Status" menu.
No problems with the IMEI, though.
Is this ok?

If you are worried send it back or honestly if purchased from Google they should be the ones you ask not anyone here. although the IMEI is whats used to identify your phone on networks.
Well, If that's the situation with all of Nexus 4 owners here, then I have nothing to worry about. The question is - how many kept the box.

Out of Curiosity
Since you just received this Nexus and the SN does not match but the IMEI does, would you mind trying something to test a theory I have?
First off, check your hardware version by powering off the unit then powering it back on while holding the volume down button. When it boots you should be in recovery.
Check toward the bottom and see what hardware version you have, is it rev_11?
Next, could you try using your Google Wallet app? I am guessing you will see an error which states: "Device Not Ready" and goes on to state the device is not fully initialized.
My theory is that the mismatched data is also causing some issues with Google Wallet since Google enters these devices into their database with matching SN and IMEI by scanning the box. Since the two don't match it fails to initialize. The only way to fix is to contact Google Wallet Support and they will have you send a bug report. After about 1-2 weeks they will fix the issue in the database and the app will start working once you clear the app data.
I hope you are willing to test, thanks!
Normal. The serial #'s are different. I kept the box. In fact I either keep the box or use a utility knife to cut out all important information on every piece of computer or other electronics equipment that I buy and store it in a filing cabinet. Various information on the labels has saved me grief multiple times (honoring a warranty, downloading proper software that is hardware version dependent, ordering a second identical item, looking for the correct manual, ordering the correct replacement parts, supplying information to tech support, etc.).
So Wallet does work for you? What hardware version do you have? Trying to diagnose an issue I am having.

Outside of a TV or printer, I still have the boxes to all my electronics that are still under warranty (I usually keep them for up to a year past warranty in case I wish to sell it online, much easier to sell when you have the original box and materials).
Same here. The one on the box starts with the normal format 303K, then in the phone its totally different like 04xxxxxxxxxx.... Does anyone have it where both serials match?
Well on the box there's a lot of different numbers. Not only S/N (which mine starts with 304K on the box), as well as SSN (Which is something like 89012....), with a Mfr Date of 04/27/2013.
---------- Post added at 10:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:54 PM ----------
Far as serial number goes, even on the bootloader screen it's listed as something like 04d6e... which isn't the same as on the box, though looking at how the S/N on the phone itself looks, I would say it's an MD5 hash of sort of the SN on the box. Though running the box's SN thru md5sum doesn't yield the same result, so probably something else.

I believe the serial number reported in the Status screen of About phone is the Android serial number/ID, not the manufacturing serial number.
