Disabling the "Always On" data connection - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With CM on my G1 back in the day, there was an option for this and it saved massive battery life... But for the life of me, I can't find it anymore??? Anyone know how it can be disabled and only on when necessary?

Settings/wireless & networks/mobile networks
In that menu you can turn data on/off and you also have the option of using only 2g, both of which will save battery.

I've seen it, but it disables it completely. And yeah 2g helps a lot- these things are juice hogs haha... BTW, I'm running the latest nightly if it was unclear...

[Q] keeping data connection alive during WiFi Hotspot mode

I did some search but I can't seem to find anything on this question. Not in Android for HD2 anyhow.
I use WiFi hotspot on the regular base and I can't seem to figure out a way to keep the data connection alive during standby or keep the phone from going to standby mode when in the WiFi hotspot mode.
I am on the latest US TMo stock rom and running MDJ FroYo HD 4.4.

Maybe address "screen timeout" time? Not sure it that's what you're referring to. If in settings you enable data over wifi it is always on, but if you uncheck, then wifi is given the priority.

I have "Enalbe always-on mobile data" checked, but whenever the screen goes off (it's set to turn off after 1 minute) data connection seems to be cut off too.
As soon as I unlock the phone (wake up from standby) data connection is back. In the WinMo, If I remember correctly, the phone never goes on standby when in WiFi hotspot mode.
Thanks for the idea of using the "screen timeout". I never thought of that lol.
Till I find a solution, I will use that as a work around.

WiFi faster w/ data network mode deactivated?

Is it my imagination or do apps that use my wifi connectivity seem snappier when the data network mode is deactivated (from menu after long press on power button)? It seems like they are pulling the data faster. I am wondering if they stop to look at 3g/4g before going to wifi when data network mode is activated?
honestly, i always turn off my 3g when I'm close to a wifi connection. saves battery & its way faster
Juice Defender for the win #FTW
Y'know, I've never tried this and think I may. Wonder if it does make a difference since I'd hope WiFi would override it anyhow. I don't see the icon for it on WiFi much of the time anyway, but is that proof? Thanks.
I am curious also? So you are saying if you disable mobile data, your wifi will pull data in faster because it doesn't have to check if 3G is on?
That would be cool, cause I am on wifi almost 90% of the time - although I would probably forget to turn my 3G back on when I got to my wifi zones.

That was just a guess. It could be nothing more than my imagination - but it did seem a bit quicker to start pulling data.
I have never turned my 3g off and have noticed at times it is slow and other times it is really fast. It mostly has to do with the transmissions and receiving of packets from your attennas
The phone automatically disables 3G and 4G data when on wifi.

Disable 3g

I there way to permanentli disable 3g? I chack use only 2g network in settings but over nigh 3g turn it self on, and drain my battery (i have very bad 3g reception).
I use latest 2.3.5 rc4.
Sent using Tt.
I can't think of anything short of fresh reinstall. It's not a rom issue. as i've never encountered this problem. Good luck.
Sent from my GT.. ah, screw it!
Try using something like APNDroid. That might help.
@n try that, always the same
@e installing, will see what will happen tonight.
Sent using Tt.
Delete all APN
Maybe work
Data
Have you disabled data connection?
No, hm... i use wireless before sleep. it disable data, and enable after turning off.
Why?
Save
It could save battery and data if your disable it. Do you have syncing enabled?
No, it`s off, and i have unlimited data plane. Only problem is that me 3g signal is very bad and phone turn 3g by itself.
Automatic
There be programs enabling 3G. Go to Dev Tools --> Show Permissions, it will load. Scroll down to 'change network connectivity' and select it. Do you see anything suspicious or familiar. Most apps ask the user to enable certain things, any that don't?

Wifi actually on when turned off? All MMS failing? Ringtone issue in Android system?

Is anyone noticing that the wifi is always turned on, even when it says it's turned off? I ALWAYS keep my wifi turned off and verified this all day in settings. However, I keep getting open wifi network notifications (prompting me to verify that the wifi is turned off) and in my battery settings, wifi shows as turned on all day and used 14% of my battery power. I'm thinking this is a VERY DIRTY trick installed by Verizon to try to offload data on to any wifi networks silently over any open network. I'm also unable to send MMS messages and the APN settings are not adjustable. Verizon tech support didn't have a clue what to do other than wait for my return policy to expire and then exchange the device. If the APN settings are not adjustable, what the hell is a new device going to do? Is anyone noticing the same problem or can validate my problems? (I'm a Verizon retailer who gets discounted dealer line service... 1 exchange within 14 days allowed with a $35 restock fee...) I really like the design, size, and responsiveness of the RAZR M, but I'm starting to think that this device needs to be sent packing in exchange for a dev edition with how bad Verizon molested it. Not really wanting to drop $549 on a phone though...
Under settings -> WiFi do you have "auto connect WiFi" unchecked?

Ya, I went through and unchecked the auto connect setting and all reminder in advanced settings.
Check SmartActions
I'll bet a 6 pack that it's SmartActions causing the wifi battery drain even when wifi is turned off. This happened to me as well. Go into SmartActions in the advanced settings there is an option to use wifi even though it's turned off. You always see wifi left off but the battery shows drain for WiFi and it'll drive you crazy. It's called 'Motorola Location Services. Use data from wifi and mobile networks to determine your approximate location even when wifi is disabled.' Once I unchecked this option, my battery draining wifi usage disappeared.

Disable Data enable Wifi automatically?

Is there a way to automatically disable the DATA Radio when Wifi is enabled?
I use Wifi at work and see no point in leaving my DATA radio enabled at the same time which is raining my battery. I dont mind missing MMS as I can get those later.
I found some apps in the play store that can do this but i didnt know if there was a way to do this using stock android? I hate having to go to 3rd party apps if there is factory method using the stock software.
I'm pretty certain it is disabled when wifi is connected.
Edit: added screenshot.
Yes, cell data is disabled when wifi is connected. It drops down to umts to conserve battery.
It would be nice if it switched down to gsm though, although I'm not sure if these newer radios have improved on umts power consumption relative to gsm. You might be able to achieve this with tasker or similar.
If you want an app that can automatically enable/disable wifi depending on location (based on cell tower as opposed to gps), Wi-Fi Matic works well.
