[Q] Phone will not shut down - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else had this problem with the stock phone? Mine will power down but ten seconds later will boot up on its own
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

No, might be a faulty power button.

Fastboot is turned on. If you press the power button (just a press, not even a hold), then the phone will boot up. happened a lot when the phone was in my pocket.

Nope. I would pull battery out, put it back in, not even get the cover back on and it would boot up on it's own

Hboot

This is really starting to pee me off. I am trying to boot into hboot. Phone off then hold volume down and power on. Nothing after like 30 seconds, as soon as release the buttons my phone boots as normal :'(

Get terminal emulator from market, and write: "reboot bootloader". You might need root.

You've not left Fastboot turned on have you?
Yes, thanks.

You can also reboot whilst holding the volume down power button and this will get u into bootloader. I think this works even with fastboot on.

Won't turn off.

Got a question. My girlfriends phone won't stay off. We press the power button to put it to sleep and/or turn the screen off. When we do, it comes back on right after. It is a little annoying and battery draining. Any help?

Just do a battery pull
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Yeah we do that, but sometimes it still does it too. Its weird.

If its plugged in it could stay on. Is her phone rooted? Can you clear the cache and dalvik? Make sure its unplugged and do a battery pull. Then leave it out for a couple mins, replace, wipe cache and see if it still happens. She may also have a crappy power button.
Nah, she's not rooted. I've thought about it, but I also don't want to mess her phone up and go through the long gfree process. Mine is rooted, g2. But I told her maybe later I would. She likes the way it is, dunno why, but does. So ill let it be for now.

B4 I was rooted I use to use go launcher and other home replacement apps and I found sometimes it would make my screen turn on randomly so it could be an app she has down loaded

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. She has a theme on go sms that tries to get her to download go launcher. I want her rooted so her phone will work 10x better, but she's an if ain't broke don't fix it girl. But her phone is pretty broke ha ha
Sent from planet Vegeta.
Haha well it could be an app and I think you should just keep trying to get her to let you root it and then give her a great custom rom and she won't have any reason to complain lol

wont turn off
hi, i have a rooted my-touch 4g w/ cyanogen 7. i am currently experiencing the same problem. pressing the power button only momentarily shuts screen off then it comes right back on. after that it will continue to shut off and on. i believe the problem has to do with the track pad button, possible=y something making contact or an improperly working switch. i have found that if you time pressing the power button right when the screen starts to turn back on it will stay off, but you have to time it right. as to why i think its the track pad, i have found that if you hold the track pad button down and then press the power button the screen will remain off until you release the track pad button. i pressed down hard on the track pad and released then tried the power button by itself and it seem to be functioning correctly for the moment. i am 99% sure its the track pad button.
Could it be stuck power button

It may be fastboot. Just a suggestion.

MT4G Dead?

Phone vibrates 5 times and has a green LED light that stays on. I was running Dark Unicorn v2 before this. It was on Safe Mode. I rebooted into recovery, and now the phone vibrates 5 times and a green light appears. VOL DOWN + POWER does not do anything besides that green-light five-vibration thingy.
Any ideas?
From what I read before, it's not dead. It put itself on some kind of mode. I don't remember where I read about this but let me do a quick search. In the mean time, have you tried adb?

I've been reading a lot about it. There was something called safe mode. From what I've read, it seems to be a problem with my volume button (perhaps the phone believe the volume up button is being pressed).
I cannot use ADB as the computer does not detect the phone/SD.
Does your volume up button feel like it's going out? Also try a battery pull then Vol down + power

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "going out", but from the outside there doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with it. I also never had any problems with it while I was using the phone normally.
The battery pull and VOL DOWN + POWER gives me five vibrations, and then a permanent green LED. I can't get the phone exchanged because I'm in India, and my warranty has already expired.
Well sorry but I'm out of ideas man. I'll keep searching for an answer and if I find something I'll let you know. Hopefully someone else sees this and has a solution

Thank you for the information. Guess there's really nothing I can do to save my phone then...
Well, at least I will be out of the T-Mobile contract in February. Then I can get a new phone, and use a temporary crappy one until then.

This happened to me and I kept trying to boot into clockworkmod recovery. No matter what I did, it wanted to either do as you stated above or it would immediately try to load off the sd card my pd15img. I simply turned off the phone, pulled the sd card out, and when the phone went to the hboot screen with a volume up and power, or volume down, I then put the sd card back in and selected recovery. I don't know if this is what's wrong with yours, but I definitely had that 5 vibration flashing light issue.

If you can get to the hboot screen you should load the pd15img. It would hopefully start you over un rooted

What does the phone do when its plugged in? I only ask because mine was doing this same thing and it turns out it was a problem with my battery. I got a new one from Ebay for about 5 bucks but I also convinced T-Mobile that it was my phone and got it replaced. I had Insurance on it of course.

I had that happen once also, I did the following and it booted up.
1) take battery out for at least 15min, (I don't know why, but it worked)
2) then do the volume-down+ power it should come right back up.
3) If I remember right, the battery that was in the unit giving me problems, was less than 20%, that very well could have been the real issue. Find a way to charge the battery then pull it.

1 + 2 tried, but didn't work.
Maybe I will try it with a new battery. Thanks for the information guys!
Edit: I do not have insurance (1 year is done)
The PD15IMG I had on my card was the original stock Ginger bread I think and I would had to have re-rooted.

I'm also having this issue, got confirmed that my MT4G is dead, but I got it revived using this method here, it is not intended for MT4G, but i got it working...I temporarily using it, while waiting for fix (if there is any) and finding mainboard for my device.

Problem is, my phone doesn't even go into recovery...or hboot.
Any solutions yet? I've been reading this and have done everything here.
I've bought myself a new replacement battery off eBay. Charged it over night and still nothing. Powering up the phone, it vibrates. After powering up the phone and left it on for 5 min, I waited to see if it'll recognize my phone through the computer so I can check if it's the phone or the lcd, but still nothing. Any suggestion will be really grateful! And I have no insurance. Bought it used over Craigslist.
Sorry, I'm not trying to jack anyone's thread. Just didn't want to start a new one with almost the same problem.
I think your volume button is stuck was reading somewhere that someone fixed it by taking his volume button apart and it was stuck pressing up I think and that's y it was doing that not sure if this would help u at all but you might wanna try that

Read that post it shows that the volume up button is stuck. The vibrations happens to me to if I power my phone down and then hold the up button and try and power on so I think that's the cause of all this

Nexus 7 Power?

OK so I have a wierd problem with my nexus. When I turn it off it won't turn back on doesn't matter if there's a USB or not. After a few hours sometimes it works sometimes it still doesn't. This is a huge problem and it stops me from getting into the boot loader. Should I just go to the store and get a new one or is there a fix?

I kinda have the same problem too, sometimes it takes a while to power on. All i do is hold the power button until the google logo shows up. Try that.

How to hard reboot / no battery pull

I have not got my phone yet should be here in a day or two but I have been rooting and flashing for a while and when things crash I have to pull battery out. What do you do on nexus 4? You if holding power down doesn't work.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
You're screwed then as holding the power button down for ten seconds is the only way to force shut it down.
It's slightly different than my N7 where you hold that power button to reboot, this one just shuts it down and I have to release and press again to start it back up.

It's just just like doing a hard shutdown on a computer.
