[Q] Android Store Problems - First Time Android User - Acer Iconia A500

The Iconia is my first Android device. I decided to go with it over the iPad since I just couldn't justify buying something that felt like a huge version of my phone.
With that being said I have issues with the market. I keep getting load errors when searching/pulling up an app to read the description. Is this an issue with the android market or an issue with my device?
I also have issues with the stock browser but I am going to try Dolphin to see if it helps.

What kind of error?
If it's load error and it gives you options to Retry or Cancel then your Wifi is not connected or losing connection.

That is the issue I'm having. Would the wifi issue be related to the tablet? I have no issues on my notebook and iphone.

i've had problems with some wireless routers and my iconia. make sure you have updated firmware for your router. it's a quick and easy fix if it works. also try wep instead of wpa. lowered encryption will sometimes clear up an issue with compatibility.

I'll look into that. My router is pretty old and I have never done squat with it.

I updated my firmware on my router and so far tonight I haven't had the market freeze or have any errors. I do have another question and that is why doesn't my apps show up under installed in the market? I also have two installed apps that are listed as not installed in the market,

[Q] Serious Acer Iconia Wifi issues

First off let me say I love this tablet and have pleasantly surprised by its build quality and over stability. Secondly let me say I am typing this thread from a $299 Acer laptop from Newegg with 5 bars of wifi strength and has never lost connectivity......ever. The frustration I feel from the iconia every 2 minutes saying I have lost internet connectivity is becoming unbearable. I am sitting about 15ft from my Fios Router and I am not quite sure why this continues to happen. I have run the wifi analyzer app and it is all over the place. Is this something that might be fixed with a future Acer update? Does it possibly have a bad wifi radio? I see a number of people with the same issues, however it does not seem widespread. I did have a xoom for a week or so with no wifi problems whatsoever. Should I return it? I am 4 days into my 14 day return window with Best Buy. I feel bad because the xoom I had before this had a bad screen and now I will be returning this for wifi issues. I just want to be sure before I go through the trouble. Thanks for the help in advance! This is the only forums I trust that have educated Devs.

Try a different wireless acess point. Pick up a $35 d-link or similar that is just an AP, and turn off the wireless in your router. I had that problem with a Speedstream modem/wireless/router when I got my Wii, only everything would lose connection with the Wii on. Some routers just suck.
You might try checking to see if your router has a firmware update first.
And just for giggles try turning 'n' off on your router.
Hi
Not related to the Acer A500 but I have the same problem with a Dell N5010 notebook.
At home with a Zyxel WIFI router everything is OK. At work with a D-Link 7000 wifi router it gives me every few minutes no internet access. Everything else (phone, other notebooks) work ok. So maybe it's the router a problem.
Hi there matey!
Dunno if it will help but i had many troubles with different routers over the years. One common thing i did notice was that not all devices gel too well with different encryption protocols. eg...TKIP, AES WPA2.
So have a try changing your wireless security settings or briefly leave it as an open network till you diagnose the problem.
Fingers crossed for ya matey!

+1. I had a problem with one of my Android devices not connecting that was solved by changing encription from WPA2 to AES. Try this first.
You're better off returning it than futzing around with it. You're well within your return date and if it not working, it's not going to work.
I have a FiOS router as well and have no issues.
Solution to Iconia Wifi connect/disconnect issue
Greetings members.
I am not a dev, I'm just I guy who loves his Android devices and now can't function without his Iconia.
I began experiencing the Iconia Wifi connect/disconnect issue this afternoon. After several reboots, I googled and found this thread. A lot of good tips but the issue has nothing to do with routers or WPA, and for the love of all that is holy, don't futz around with factory resets or replacing it. The issue is with the hardware and the Wifi drivers in the 3.1 update.
Thankfully, Acer has heard our pleas and has produced a patch and an update.
Looks like the link was blocked by admins (I have to post 7 more...), so just go to acer.com and navigate to the drivers and downloads section, navigate to the tablet/iconia tab/a500 section, go to Patch and download.
Extract and copy the zip file to the root of a microSD. There is actually a pdf with full instructions in the zip.
Bottom line, follow the instructions in the PDF and it WILL restore your Iconia Wifi.
Once the Wifi is back up, check for updates and there is another update to 3.1.
Apparently the 3.1 COM_GEN2 updates for most all countries had this flaw and these two updates are intended to fix the issues.
Just read through the PDF and then follow the steps and you'll be surfing again.
Thanks everyone for this site. Love the help and the insights. And, enjoy your A500's once again.
There are postings from some Xoom users who also had WiFi issues with the 3.1 update. Since the WiFi problems mainly started with the HC 3.1 update, I think it's safe to say most of the problems have been related to the O/S.
I'm using DD-WRT on my linksys wrt600n router at home and it's worked fairly well.

@Slaught3r - thanks, I've tried all the different roms and was beginning to think it was mine only.
I also get wifi connectivity problems, even after the pqtch.:'( I only got it yesterday, so it may be going back.
Could the issue instead be related to your routers? Maybe the channel you've got them configured on is crowded?
I'm just wondering because, well, I have not had any kinds of WIFI-issues at all on any of the ROMs I've tried except only where the channel has already been really crowded by several routers on the same channel.
Doubt it. I'm not using a custom rom on my A500 yet. Still the stock Acer rom. I have it configured to automatically connect me at home, work, and even at church of all places. Until yesterday, everything worked, then...weirdness. Without making changes to my routers, the patch (and subsequent OTA update) seems to have fixed the issue nicely.
Be sure to follow the instructions contained in the zip download from Acer. If you are on a custom Rom and are having this problem, most likely the dev will need to release a patch based on the Acer patch.
Thanks to Slaught3r for the info about the patch. It is important to follow the directions re: the buttons in the PDF exactly. The directions on the Acer support web site differ about when to release the power button versus the volume button, and those directions do NOT work.
Before you do this you may want to disable your router's wireless security, at least until you get the update installed.
@Slaught3r:
Acer doc suggests the problem was fixed in A500_4.010.10_COM_GEN2.
I am experiencing frequent but short Wifi disconnects with Build A500_4.010.11_COM_GEN2.
Can you tell me what build you applied your patch to and what you are now running? I am trying to decide if applying this patch is appropriate, considering I already have a later build.
Any further info from anyone reading this would be appreciated.

I had the same issue after the update to .11. However I solved my issue without the patch.
On the Acer website, I searched on wifi and came upon this link: "What can I do if I am unable to connect via WiFi after completing an Iconia Tab A500 system update?"
I tried the first suggestion of turning the wifi on and off with a restart. It didn't work. The second suggestion is to do a hardware reset with using a paper clip to the hardware switch. That worked; keep in mind that you need to perform that reset twice. The instructions are pretty clear cut.

I was on Acer_A500_4.010.09_COM_GEN2 (pre patch where Wifi was acting up)
After the recent OTA, I'm on 4.010.10_COM_GEN2
My system shows "Up to date" so there is no .11 for me (at least not yet).
It has been a couple days since the patch and subsequent update from .09 to .10 and everything has been fine for my model. Sorry you are having the issues you are.
Many times the wifi problem is caused by incompatible router software. While you would think Acer would take care of this via software upgrade, they do so only for limited routers, apparently.
I just spoke to Dlink, the manufacturer of my router, downloaded updated firmware, works perfectly for two days.

Thanks for posting this. Luckily I have fixed my WIFI problems with the first step.
At some point my router had a problem that somehow stuffed up Iconia's WIFI. Just rebooting didn't help as it still couldn't connect to any network. Switching wifi off and rebooting did the trick for me.

Problem with wify connection on 3.2 stock

Hi ppl, I'm having some serious problem with my wify connection getting lost every time since the 3.2 update the wify icon! Goes gray and blue each moment, it's like it lost the inernet from the router. Because of this gtalk doesn't keep connected. Hope y can help me here
Xoom wifi us stock 3.2
Hope ur xoom is not configured to get static IP from the router if yes remove the static IP or u can configure the static IP on the xoom itself hope it helps

Yep, same issue here. I think there is a bug with the update...
Its no bug

I have no problem getting an ip, and it's not static. And how do you know for sure this is not a bug? Are you and Android developer?
2 of us have the same issue afte updating. I bet there will be more as it rolls out.

Wow this actually worked like a charm, it's weird that this be a problem with the xoom now, it should be totally transparent to it. Well I guess that later will come out some sort of explanation to this. Thx!.
Ur welcome

I don't have such problems, but i want to point out that gray wifi icon doesn't mean there is no internet connectivity. If you disable sync the icon will turn gray, but you still have internet.
i have the exact same problem with losing connection to the Google server and the wifi icon switching from blue to grey constantly. When this happens my internet cennections also times out for a split second causing downloads in progress to end. I do also believe that it is a bug associated with 3.2. I've tried everything that I can think of to resolve it with no luck too. First I went through all of my router settings and did a wipe of the xoom. It didn't work so I went through the hassel of unrooting, relocking, and starting from scratch on 3.0, and I still have the same problem now that I'm back to 3.2. The xoom did not experience this issue on 3.0 or 3.1 and my Asus transformer is not having any problems running on the same connection, so the only thing left to blame my issues on is the 3.2 update itself.

I agree, my wifi turns off when the screen is off even though I have it set to always on!
I am also seeing some strange WiFi connectivity issues that I did not have on 3.1. The indication goes from blue to grey constantly and does cause a interuption of any downloads. Nothing has changed on my router or Xoom settings and both are set to dynamically assign the IP address. While I can still surf when it is grey, something is just not right. I have tried resetting both the router and my Xoom, nothing seems to solve this issue. This definately seems like a bug to me.
Can anyone confirm this is not an issue with the latest Tiamat kernel? I am currently 100% stock and this would give be one more reason to root.

I just finished reunlocking the bootloader, rerooting, and reinstalling cwm. I am in the process of downloading the deodexed 3.2/tiamat 2.0.0 rom to see if this has any effect on the wifi problems that I have been experiencing on 3.2. If this does not work then I am going back to 3.1 until another update comes out. I'll report back to tell you whether I still have these wifi issues tomorrow.
Unfortunately the deodexed 3.2/tiamat 2.0.0 rom did not help with my wifi issues. I flashed the tiamat 1.1 rom, which is based on 3.1 and now everything is working great. I don't know what my problem was with 3.2 or why so few people seem to be suffering with the same problem, but I'm sticking with this rom for awhile.
Was having similar wifi issues... connection retry messages in Market, failed to load web pages, etc. Additionally, network indicator remained primarily "gray". Removed DCHP reservation from router as recommended in earlier post and problem seems to have disappeared. Network indicator remains "blue" and retry messages have completely vanished. Thanks for suggestion
I think I have solved my issues. On the networks I manage (home and portable hotspot) I set the profile on the Xoom to use a static IP. What is strange is that on networks that I do not have control over (work and public hotspots) I left it as DHCP and I am not having any issues. I was having issues before I changed the OTHER profiles to static. Very strange.
I have opened issue 18648 at google code for this:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...CP&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
DHCP seems to renew my IP address every 2-3 mins according to the adb debug log. Please star the issue if you are still getting it.
Just chiming in...I have a (new to me) XOOM with 3.2, 100% stock, no root, no funny business -- and I have the exact same problem.
There is a constant shift from blue to grey WiFi connection status icon, and issues with playing games online (server disconnections) and downloading apps.
I watched the log and do not see DHCP re-attempts as a new comment suggested, however.
I will attempt to set a static IP when I am home tonight and see if that fixes my issues there...

WiFi & android market

im having really weird problems accessing and downloading from android market. when i am using my phone network i dont have any issues at all, but whenever i try to access it using wifi all my downloads fail.
it's only the market i have a problem with, otherwise i can browse the net and download as normal using wifi.
any idea what the problem can be? remember, its specific ONLY to the market place
*apologies, this should be in the S2 thread
Once got the same problem on Galaxy S. It disappeared automagically after one day.
ok, i managed to get it working, but only by making my wifi connection open. if i have any encryption on my router i cant access the market.
judging by the lack of replies, i guess no-one has a clue?
try it on someone else's router
Happened to me all the time using the old market. I installed the newer version and the problem went away.
Also the encryption on your router should make no difference, this is transparent to the app.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
router isnt the problem.
just noticed that my version of the market is 2.3.6, so looks like there's been quite a few updates that i have been missing out on, downloading now and ill let you know if it solves the problem

[Q] Another Wireless Tether issue.

First I would like to say thanks to everyone on this sight. You guys have given me what little bit of knowledge I have about my phone and helped me in more ways than one but I have an issue I can't resolve. When I try to connect my wifes Kindle I'm getting an error saying the device doesn't support enterprise or peer to peer connections try another. It used to work before but not now! I'm currently running Apex 1.4 if that matters. Is there a setting or something I need to change? I went into my WT settings in the encryption setup tab and tried all my options. There were only two not counting auto. One was iwconfig and the other was wpa_supplicant. Neither has worked. Is this the right place? I'm not very familiar with the settings in WT simply because I have never had this issue before. Thanks in advance.
I'm not completely sure, but from what I understand your wireless tether is broadcasting in ad-hoc mode, when it should be broadcasting in infrastructure mode.
If you can find a way to change this setting your problem should be fixed.
Edit: What version of Wireless Tether are you using?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
That is exactly what it is doing. I can't seem to find out how to change that setting though. I was running an older version of WT and went ahead and downloaded an updated version. Tried it out on some friends phones that were giving the ad-hoc error also and I'm not seeing it with the newer version now. We'll see how the wifes Kindle reacts when I get home. Thanks!
In the newer versions, it's under 'Setup Method'.
I generally use 'Auto', but that may be going to Ad-Hoc for some reason. Try setting it to 'Hostapd (master)'. That should force it into AP mode.

[Q] 4.2.2 update, now WIFI probs. Anybody else?

I run my N7_16G_WIFI stock.
I received the 4.2.2 update over the weekend. Now, though my wifi seems to be connected, and you see upstream/downstream animation in the notification area, play music isn't downloading the download queue, but fails. Websites load, but speedtest app fails to complete the searching for server phase. Installing apps from the play store works, eventually, but Netflix, YouTube, and other medium to high bandwidth apps are not. Even my weather app will only load the weather alert page, yet maps, forecast, etc are unusable.
Will test LAN performance to gauge the extent of the problem, perhaps related to traffic passing through the gateway. No other devices on the network are affected, however. I usually stream files from my DLNA server with no problem, so I can test that tonight.
Has anyone had any issues with flaky WIFI after the update? I had no such issues before.
I've been having constant disconnect/auto reconnect after the update to 4.2.2. No other device on my network is having this issue though.

Dang
My wi-fi was flawless before the update and is just as good after 4.2.2. I sincerely doubt the update caused a problem if it installed correctly. Many posts refer to fixing wi-fi issues by updating/resetting the router. I have a pretty new router with the latest firmware update.

Same here. I expect to have problems in my neighborhood; Urban area and everyone has WiFi. I brought it to work to test on our Meru network, though, and still had the same problem. At work, we are the only building on a 100+acre lot, with saturated WiFi signal. I still had the same issues.
On a factory upgrade, not sure what I could have done incorrectly, since I just tapped "Yes, install" and went to bed.
