Rom question (newbish) - myTouch 3G, Magic General

So I downgraded my 32a 3.5mm My touch to 1.6, Then I used the Universal Androot to acquire root . From here, is it possible to flash to cyanogen or any of these roms. Right now I dont have a rom .
If so how would I have to go about it

Download ROM manager and click flash clockworkmod recovery and choose ION/Mytouch. Then download a rom of your choice and put it on sdcard and power phone off and power back on holding home+power and keep holding until you get into recovery. Then scroll to and select backup and do a backup. When its done. Select wipe data factory reset. Then select wipe cache partition. Then select mounts/storage and select format boot then select format system. Then hit the back button and go to flash zip from sdcard and select the ROM and then select yes. Let it flash. When done select reboot system. It will take quite sometime to boot. When it hoots your good to go. You'll find all the gingerbread Roms you want in G1 DEVELOPMENT. THE MYTOUCH 1.2 IS A HYBRID. IT SAYS 32A BUT TRUST ME YOU NEED 32B ROMS. SO YOU WANT ROMS FOR A 32B. DONT FLASH ANY ROMS FOR 32A!!! THEY WONT BOOT. Good Luck. Let me know how it goes. FOR YOUR FIRST FLASH I RECOMMEND TRYING COS-DS FROM G1 ANDROID DEVELOPMENT. JUST PICK THE ONE WITH YOUR PREFERRED LANGUAGE. ITS A GREAT FIRST ROM TO TRY BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL YOULL NEED TO DO OTHER THAN FLASH IT. IT WILL INSTALL THE CORRECT KERNEL FOR YOUR MYTOUCH. If you need help just shoot me a private message. I'd be glad to help. Universal androot is what I used. I did the exact steps I gave you and I've been running custom roms for a longtime.
PS. ACTUALLY JUST SHOOT ME A PM AND ILL GIVE YOU A LINK TO A GOOD ROM. IT WILL BE COS-DS-05202011 BY ROALEX. GINGERBREAD, ANDROID 2.3.4

TRY "fastboot" command to flash all *.img files

You can't use fastboot. You have S-ON. Fastboot is not even enabled on the Mytouch 1.2 (3.5mm Jack). Obviously he is not sure what he's talking about with the Mytouch 1.2.

[Q] i think i bricked my mytouch 3g...please HELP..ASAP..PLEASE

I have a original nytouch 3g rooted, just flashed to the cm6-rc2, it worked fine EXCEPT there's NO market app and gmail app. so i went online to ask and some1 said to install market and gmail i need to have Gapps installed and he showed me to go to Rom manager to get those. I went there and saw google app but to be able to install it, it said i must have the ClockworkMod installed first, so i did then it prompt to reboot the phone...i hit OK to reboot it and the phone just got STUCK on the Booting loop, never got to the home screen, i assumed i bricked the damn phone. basically, iam screwed..please anyone help me to fix it, PLEASE..thanks alot
Can u get into recovery or anything? That shouldn't brick your phone. U need to go to amonra 1.7.0 recovery. Forget that method of gapps. Just download and flash the link. People have been having a lot of problems with your method

well, i tried to turn on the phone by holding home+power, it went to this screen:

-reboot system now
-apply sdcard:update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-install zip from sdcard
-nandroid
-partitions menu

ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1
if i try to select reboot system now, it wont work, it'll will boot but got stuck on boot screen forever.
i did try to select "wipe data/factory reset" then "wipe cache partition" then select "intall zip form sdcard" then it takes me to my sdcard that shows this:
Choose a zip to apply
-Android/
-clockworkmod/
-dcim/
-lost.dir/
-update-cm-6.0.0-DS-RC2-signed
I select "update-cm-6.0.0-rc2..", wait for it to flash then reboot and the phone still gets stuck on boot screen, seems like nothing fixed..
I assumed the issue is the ClockworkMod messed everything up, but i just don't know how to get rid of it....
sigh....so frustrated...i had an iphone before and it's so simple, if you mess up just restore via itunes and everything goes back to stock.. anyway, please help anyone...please
Did u try downloading amonra 1.7.0 and flashing it?

Did u do a nandroid backup before u flashed the Rom? If u did just restore. If u can I have RA-sapphirev-1.7.0g as my recovery. Same phone as u. You're not bricked. Just need to undo what u did.

no, i didn't do any backups...stupid me..is there any other way to fix when i don't hava a backup?
Can you get your sdcard to show up on your computer? If you can. Try wiping everything in recovery. Re-partition your sdcard leaving the values as they are. Then download cyanogen 5.0.8 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=688262 putting that on your sdcard and flashing it to see if it boots up. Also this is the recovery you should have stayed with. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492 and need to go back to. Page also has instructions on different ways to flash it. Let us know what happens. Use g version at top of downloads btw
Make sure that while in recovery you flash the 5.0.8.zip and then flasht the Google Add-on .zip before rebooting.
Actually I flashed them separate and all was well. Just trying to get you into the os so u can flash the recovery and get rid of Rom manager. If u can't get your sdcard on your comp to load another Rom to boot u might have to change your recovery through fastboot. Then flash new Rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719. More info on fastboot flashing ect.

U still have that recovery flashed to your phone. Download the one I posted put on sdcard and use terminal method on that thread to flash

clock work is fine.... do u still see the options u have? install from zip? after downloading gapp or roms correctly... go into download folder, locate gapp or roms n flash.
by downloading correctly means... having good internet connection and not having data shifting from 3g to e to wateva. plus dont do anything else beside the download. if u lose connection or shifting in connection speed... cancel download n redownload...this will keep download file from getting corrupted during download process... for future referrence - u should do this to everydownload
we r here to help hopefully this will fix ur problem

[Q] How To Go Back To Original/To Install Another Rom

Hello, ive installed gingerbread yoshi rom,but i want to delete it and install the cyanogen mod rom(stable),for my mytouch 3g original. Now how can i do this?ive looked anfd foudn nothing, and also, the downloaded file(rom)from cyanodegn mod rom its 55 mb's,so i just put the whole zip folder into the root of the memory card and go into recovery mode and install from zip?anyways i hope somebody can help, thanks
The only thing you need to do is to put the cyanogen.zip into the root of your sdcard and then boot into recovery and select "flash .zip".
Next time you flash a custom rom I recommend you to make a nandroid backup (this will backup all data including rom). If you don't like the rom you just flashed you are able to recover nandroid backup.
i did that and it gets stuck on the green mytouch screen.i wiped all data, cache partition, then intalled rom from zip and nothing

First, I would superwipe. You can download it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834812
Boot into recovery, and assuming you are on amon_ra or clockworkmod recovery, choose intall from zip and run superwipe. Power down the phone and boot back into recovery. Now install Cyanogen mod and you should be fine.
Make sure you have the right cm file for your phone. I don't recall seeing what version of the mytouch you have. For example, if you have the original mytouch with the 32B, and If you updated the radio and spl when you installed Yoshi ginger, make sure you get the cyanogem mod 6.1 for the 2708 radio.
Good luck.
try yoshi froyo
Sorry, forgot to add this....
you may also want to try Yoshi Froyo rather than cyanogenmod.

What's your fastboot info? Turn the phone on holding (back+power) and post that here.

[A] Bootloop after flashing a ROM via 3.0.0.5 Recovery image.

What you did .. .. ..
Okay so you've rooted your newly bought MyTouch4G, and you've made sure that s=off and you've flashed Clockwork ROM manager's recovery image that you got from the market. That is all the correct order. But when you flashed a ROM you got stuck in a bootloop.
Am i screwed???
Don't worry you are just in a "soft brick mode", or "limp mode" if you will.
What happened? Why is it doing this?
The Image that you downloaded and installed 3.0.0.5 is for 2.3 (Gingerbread) based ROMs only. [n3rd note] these are ext4 style ROMS. They act and store information differently than 2.2 which are Ext3 ROMs[/n3rd note].
This could also be caused by trying to flash a 2.3 using a older 2.x.x.x version of the Recovery Image. Those will only support the Ext3 style ROMs, which are FroYo (2.2) based ROM.
Okay what do i need to do to fix it, there are two methods.
This is Method one it's the older version.
You must use this method if you do not have the engineering screen
If you are using the 3.0.0.5 Recovery image
To fix your problem you need to flash any 2.3 based ROM, for time sake i will recommend Cyanogen(mod). Link to Cyanogen(mod)'s CM7RC4. While you are there you need to also store the G/Apps.
If you are using the 2.x.x.x Recovery Image
To fix your problem you need to flash any 2.2 based ROM, for time sake i will recommend RoyalGlacier Thread can be found here
- Question: How do i find out what Recovery image i am using
- Answer: Boot the phone into the recovery mode. We'll touch on that in a little bit
Now when you download both of those files you also need to store them to SDCard.
NOTE: If you are using 2.x.x.x and going to flash RoyalGlacier you will not need the g/apps. They have included this in their ROM, and MAKE sure to follow their specific directions for installing the ROM.
- Question: Now how in the world i am going to do that since my phone is in bootloop.
Answer:
Two ways one can do that
1) use a SDcard reader and just plug the card into a main USB port.
2) Mount the SDCard in the phone via the Recovery Image. *** i'd recommend this method since you are going to need to be in recovery anyway ***
Pull the battery from the phone an put it back in, then put the back on the phone. turn the phone on holding the power button along with the volume down rocker button. That will boot the phone into the HBoot (Engineering) Screen. From there you will see an option that says "recovery" [this is what i mentioned earlier, about the different versions] use the volume rocker to select it, then tap the power button to select it. The phone will reboot into what is called the recovery image. From there you will select "mount" then USB. That will mount the SDCard to the Computer.
If you are using the 3.0.0.5 Recovery image
Once you have move Cyanogen(mod) and the g/apps to the SD card unmount the SDCard.
Then navigate to "wipe data/factory reset" you will want to wipe the phone. That will format everything to a fashion that can be written over w/o problems.
Then navigate to "install .zip from sdcard" > " choose .zip " > then flash the main Cyanogen(mod) ROM. Then do the same but flash the g/apps that you downloaded.
Once those are done you can re-boot the phone. That will boot you into cyanogen.
If you are using the 2.x.x.x Recovery image
Please use the link i supplied above to get that ROM up and running once it is done, according to their instructions come back here.
Now i understand that may or may not want Cyanogen nor RoyalGlacier on your phone. Well take care of that
What can i do to prevent this from Happening again?
Once you are up and running (make sure to log into your Google Account) go to the market and download Clockwork ROM manager again, and re-flash the recovery image.
Once you are done with that i HIGHLY suggest upgrading to the newest 3.0.0.6 Recovery image. You can do that one of two ways.
one way is to flash True_Blues method for installing 3.0.0.6 recovery image. Use this thread..
This is the way that i would personally recommend.
The second way is download the 3.0.0.6 recovery image, which i've attached and flash it via the ADB commands. If you want to do it this way you do not need to download Clockwork Rom Manager, you can "just flash it". If you need help with that, if you are using Windows or Mac, see my signature for True_Blue's method on EZ ADB. If you are using Unbutu 10.10 use this This Method to get ADB running. This is the method i used to ADB running on my Linux NetBook.
Download the file that i've attached and store just the recovery image from the .zip to the SDCard, from the ADB commands type
adb shell
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Click to collapse
More information on this process can be found here
That will flash the newest recovery image to your phone
Once you have installed the 3.0.0.6 ROM Manager you can wipe and flash ANY MyTouch4G ROM that you want. It will handle both 2.2 (ext3) and 2.3 (ext4) ROM formats.
This is the New Method - Which is a little easier.
AND YOU MUST HAVE THE ENGINEERING HBOOT
Thanks to TeeJay for inspiring this.
I am going to assume that since you have the Engineering Screen you are more familiar with what you are doing so i'll be more to the point with this walk-through.
you will need to have ADB up and running for this method.
1) Download the attached file and store just the .img to your folder from which you preform all of your ADB commands
2) plug the phone into the computer
3) boot the phone into HBoot
4) from the ADB commands change the drive to the folder where you stored the recovery image.
5) type these commands
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
the screen should say something to the degree of
Code:
sending 'recovery' (3426 KB)... OKAY [ 1.172s]
writing 'recovery'... OKAY [ 0.797s]
finished. total time: 1.969s
6) then select "bootloader"
7) navigate to "reboot recovery"
8) flash your ROM of choice.
9) enjoy your ROM of choice.
Please feel free to use this in your signature or link people back to. If you feel i made an error in this post please PM and i'll edit it accordingly.
If this thread has helped you solve your problem please hit the "thanks" button.
THE RECOVERY IMAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED TO THE NEWEST ONE.
good summary. originally when i flashed cm7 I had to search a bit to come up with what you said above. one addition, CWM lets you mount sd storage to usb so you can copy files to sdcard (say the recovery image). then update CWM 3.0.0.6 with ADB.

Well i work in the Imported Automotive parts. My job requires me to basically sit around and answer the phone when it rings. We have our own "call center" room. I just pick up the phone and answer question and sell parts. Like right now i'm working on a engine rebuild kit for a 1975 2Ton Mercedes Bens..... so i get some free time from time to time, and XDA is one of a few sites they allow me to visit.... BGR/ Android and Me, Android Central are the others....
I can see why some people blow up, spend +$200.00 on a phone then turn around and blow through something w/o taking the time to read something and then you get stuck in a bootloop.... i can see why people go bonkers. But slowing down and reading would solve alot of problems. Heck i've got 3 great threads in my signature that would solve alot question that one could have with a new device.
fixed my problem
Thread stuck.
Great guide!
Same issue, except i flashed 3.0.0.6 beforehand to prevent any problems. Iced Glacier flashed okay, I just didn't care for it much. Ive wiped all the necessary parts prior to flashing as I would before flashing any roms. Ive managed to retrieve and restore a previous back (I can haz backups) so Im not stuck. I would like to be in the cool kids cyanogen club. Any ideas?

Meaning you want to run Cyanogen(mod)? Well jump over to their site and download the ROM of your picking; Nightlies are alpha builds, and the RC's are beta builds. I've ran both and both are extremely stable. I have links supplied in the first post. and directions for that matter. just make sure to do a nandroid backup before wiping and flashing.

Why do you say that?

Really confused can anyone please help

I have rooted my hero using androot, downloaded rom manager and let it flash clockwork recovery that worked, i turned my phone off then on again with the power and home buttons pressed, did a back up with no problems. This bit confused me, i did the power on with the home and power buttons pressed just to make sure it worked, and i got the phone with a red triangle again, what does this mean ?? :S

It means your clockworkmod recovery is gone, and you have no recovery image. Maybe it's because androot. It is not a complete root. To check your backup, just search in your sd card. There must be a nandroid folder.
To get back recovery, mayby you should use rom manager again or do a full root.

What you need to do is
1. Make sure you have a custom rom Zip on your SD card
2. Do Androot
3. Do Nand Backup
4. Full wipe
5. install your Custom rom
and you are done.. once you install the custom rom you can keep going to recovery as many times as you want

[Q] Do I have a brick?

I was running CM7 RC3 fine on my phone, then I decided to switch back to my nandroid backup to stock ( I have done this wil ICed glacier/CM7 RC2/RC1/Royal Ginger etc with no problems). And I have been stuck on the boot splash screen the "Tmobile Mytouch 4g" screen for 20 minutes now without any action... is this a brick? I know I should not worry, but I tried wiping the dalvik cache the acahe and reset to factory setting.... still nothing
How do I go about getting the phone to work?
Thanks
are you running recovery 3.0.0.6? have you tried a battery pull?
Yes, a battery pull was tried, and I am running 3.0.0.5... any help is really appreciated
How do I possibly install 3.0.0.6 now? is it possible?
Thanks
need 3.0.0.6 to run stock or royal glacier. or 2.5.1.2. need to reinstall cm7 and use rom manager to flash recovery. or at least its the eaisest way for me.
follow drews guide and let us know how it goes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944681
unfortunately, I am not being able to go back to royal ginger (its on the toyal ginger splash screen now) I am downloading CM7 RC3 again, but have no way to put it on the sdcard coz I do not have a card reader at this point....... so frustrated.
you can use recovery to mount usb and it will mount the sd card and can tranfer files from computer to card. if you can get to recovery its not bricked. make sure you format boot sys data and cache in mount screen before trying reflash.
Push the cwm 3.0.0.6 recovery image to your phone via adb

Google easy way to get 3.0.0.6 and it should be a zip file u flash in recovery called clockwork_recoveries.zip or something like that. You go into rom manager pick all recoveries and flash 3.0.0.5 and reboot into recovery and it should say 3.0.0.6 now u can flash any rom and restore without getting stuck

Your phone is not bricked. As others have stated, you need to re-flash a gingerbread ROM (like CM7) in order for it to boot.
Best thing to do is install ClockworkMod Recovery version 3.0.0.6 because it can flash both gingerbread and froyo ROMs. You can do this in two ways:
1. Re-flash a Gingerbread ROM. Download TrueBlue_Drew's .zip file from his thread in Development and follow his instructions to be able to flash the included recovery images from ROM Manager.
2. If you have the engineering bootloader (0.85.2007, also some people call it ENG SPL), and if you've set up ADB on your computer, then you can use the fastboot utility to flash recovery images directly to the device. I personally prefer this method. If you can't find instructions to do this, PM me.
