In the past I was using HTC USB Modem to connect my laptop trought the internet 3G of my TYTN that's working very well, then I use an IPSEC utility like the Linksys QuickVPN or the SafeNet SoftRemote LT to establish connection to my office ! All that was working very well for long times ;-)
Now since the new Internet Sharing I have a problem ! The connection to the Internet with the laptop is very easy to establish but when I connect my QuickVPN or SafeNet, they says that connection are established but it is impossible to communicate with the office network !!!
The solution is maybe behind the configuration of the router or the QuickkVPN or SafeNet software but because all was working before AKU 3.3 I have the feeling that Internet Sharing are a bit responsible ;-)
Probaby because it make a private network more 192.168.0.x in the course to the office, but why VPN connection can establish correctly and that I can't connect to computer of the network, neither to the router itself
I am using WM6 Pro Black 3.0.1 very nice an stable version and all BT connection and Wifi seems to work well better sinds upgrade, but I and still very dissapointed that I can't connect my laptop to my Office via VPN/IPSEC.
I have try a second approach, installing Bluefire VPN on my TYTN, I can connect my TYTN to my office network, so then I have try to establish the Internet SHaring with my laptop to connect also to the office network, but when BluefireVPN are connected, it is simply impossible to access any location on the Internet or the Office network with the laptop, IP is well given 192.168.0.102 like without the VPN connection of bluefire, but unable to go to the Internet ! If I disconnect BlueFireVPN on the TYTN, the internet goes back to the laptop ;-)
Can somebody help me to find a solution to better understand the working of Internet Sharing and/or How to fix the connection problem with VPN and Internet Sharing ;-)
Thanks a lot for JasJamming for your very stable Rom WM6PB3.0.1
Please Help Me ;-)
Please anybody can help me ;-)
Hi,
not sure if i can help, BUT if anyone can we prob need to see some network settings.
1) load cmd and do: ipconfig /all>c:\normal_net.txt
2) connect to internet on phone NOT VPN at this point
3) @ cmd do: ipconfig /all>C:\conn_net_no_vpn.txt
3b) @ cmd do: route print>c:\conn_no_vpn_route.txt
3c) @ cmd do: tracert bbc.co.uk>c:\conn_no_vpn_trace.txt
4) connect to the vpn at your work
5) @ cmd do: ipconfig /all>c:\conn_net_and_vpn.txt
5b) @ cmd do: route print>c:\conn_net_and_vpn_route.txt
5c) @ cmd do: tracert bbc.co.uk>c:\conn_net_and_vpn_trace.txt
If you can let us know the subnet settings of each network and attach all those txt files to your next post and I'll see if there is anything i can spot...
gd luck
Thanks Acuum2
I have check all you say, It seems like no inbound traffic can come, only Outbound, I suppose that is because of the process of Internet SHaring that operate like a NAT but not really because I have try with a friend that have a router with NAT and it work very well for him with they internal network 192.168.1.0 so no NAT-T problem.

ALL seems Identical !
It seems that there are no route for the Office Network, but in fact SafeNet SoftRemote LT intercept packet destinate to 192.168.123.x my office subnet and send to the tunel, but it seems that packet can't return.
Probably because a NAT-T problem with Internet SHaring !!!
Do you have any other idea ?
Have a nice day.
;-) Thanks a lot

3 236 ms 260 ms * 192.168.159.129
Theses networks are not form my side but probably form Internet Sharing, It is extremely strange that Internet Sharing Need so much network to work:
192.168.0.x for the laptop connection, and 192.168.22.8 after and 192.168.159.129 after !!!
Any idea ?
How Can We know how works Internet Sharing how can we change the IP network private like 192.168.0.x ! or other 22.8 and 159.129 ?
hi,
how many machines are there in your office network?
i havn't looked too closly at the results your sent me YET (i will do)
i think the problem is almost certainly a routing issue, not caused by NAT it's self, but caused by the subnets selected for each network at the end of the tunnel.
I think your office is on the same subnet that is setup by your phone when you try to use ICS.
this would, it seems be confirmed by it working on your firends network that that is on a diff subnet.
I know of no way to change the subnet settings that ICS creates, so would assume the only solution would be to change the network settings that get used at your office.
putting them on 192.168.10.X for instance i think would solve the routing issues as the subnets at each end of the tunnel would not be the same.
but obviously if your not the IT admin, or you have 10+ machines then its a pain to setup....
let me know how many machine, and ill have a CLOSE look at the results you posted me...
regards.
A
no problem for me to try, I have only 3 PCs and I have already try with an other subnet like 192.168.111.x and 192.168.234.X no way same problem I think that something are diffrent in the process of ICS face to a normal NAT router .
Thanks for your help.
;-)
arh in that case, you mat be right.
if it were me, i'd consider changing your VPN solution
purhaps use openVPN in full bridging mode.
this should get arround all your routing issues, although it could be more expensive in terms of bandwidth.
The problem stay that we don't know how work ICS on WM6 (or WM5) I think that there is something wrong in Internet Sharing, but it seems that there are not a lot of people are have this problem or maybe that simply use VPN with there TyTN via Internet SHaring ;-)
Have you and idea on how to install the old process with the MOdem Link on WM6 or WM5 AKU3.3+
Thanks for your help
I am having the same problem
I am having the same problem with VPN. My company uses a Cisco VPN client and since I upgraded my cingular phone to the latest official release with Internet Sharing, I have no way to get traffic through the VPN.
The connection is done quickly but it looks like there is a problem in routing the traffic trough the VPN.
I called Cingular and they have no clues and so my IT department. They see the connection but no traffic.
Any gurus out there that can help?
Thank you
Maybe this is the answer
The following article from Microsoft mybe the answer to the problem:
"Establishing a VPN Connection with an ICS Host
You should establish VPN connections on clients of an Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) Host.
MORE INFORMATION
Establishing a VPN connection on the ICS Host modifies the Routing Table on the ICS Host and forces all clients that try to connect to the Internet to use the VPN routing table instead of the routing table used to connect to the Internet service provider (ISP). This can create the following issues:
1. Clients may not be able to resolve the names of Internet resources and must use the Name Resolution services of the network where the ICS Host is connected using VPN. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, client computers may receive the following error message:
Error: Page Can Not be Displayed.
You may receive other error messages that say the VPN server can not be located when you try to establish a second VPN connection from the client.
2. Depending upon the network, all clients may be able to connect to the secure network as the same account that initially established the VPN connection. For example, if you establish a VPN connection to a corporate network on a computer running ICS, all the clients connected to the ICS Host may be able to connect to all the network resources on your corporate network.
The issues listed in this article do not occur if you establish the VPN connection on a client ICS Host computer connected to the Internet."
It looks like that in order for the thing to work, the VPN must be established on the phone/PDA and then shared through ICS.
Tomorrow I will try with the IT department...
I have try to start first vpn with the Phone with Bluefire and then start ICS with the notebook, but It seems that the problem are identical, no more internet connection possible nor to the office vpn network, effectively it could be a routing issue, but sinds the Ipsec software I use don't modify the routing table, I don't know how how to force traffic throw the IPSEC channel created :-(
And probably IP packets don't know also where to go ;-)
Yesterday I have try to connect via Bluetooth PAN in place of USB thinking that could be a little different, but in that case I have an other problem, the Laptop connect to the NAP but don't receive any IP adress, so IP stay at 0.0.0.0 and no connection are possible, so I haven't be able of course to test VPN in this way ;-)
Have somebody resolve this DHCP problem with Bluetooth PAN ?
Thanks for your help.
Is there somebody that can't obtain IP adresse when connecting via ICS via Bluetooth PAN ?
I progress,
First my problem of IP adress in connection with Bluetooth PAN is due to Bluefire VPN that add a key in registry under the bluetooth parameter UpperBind linkink to Bluefire I have remove this key and ICS with Bluetooth PAN works now and you can change the IP adress in the TCPIP param of bluetooth that's the second point of interest asked by Accum2
But changing the IP adress in the ICS don't seem to improve the VPN problem
I have know the reason why It is impossible to etablishe VPN on the phone and then share with the laptop, it is because when you connect the ICS, it take always the Cellular Line as PublicConnection, If we find a way so that ICS use the VPN connection already connected that could permit to NAT between VPN(Phone) and USB or Bluetooth PAN with ICS. I have try to change the registry key of the publicconnection of ICS while it is connected but it is not working and every time you run ics it change the key.
If Somebody know how we could change the publicconnection, so that we can set an previously active VPN or a WLAN connection that could be nice
I hope I am not alone in the dark
I have the same problem with establishing a VPM when using Internet sharing.
In talking to HTC they say that the way Internet sharing works, your laptop is on the Cingular Network and they block the ports the VPN needs to connect.
The solution is to go back and use the Wireless Modem. This way you do not go the same path and VPN connections will work.
Is there anyone out there that has the source of the old Wireless Modem and can make it installable on WM6 or the WM5 update that has Internet sharing?
This would fix the problem.
I updated to Black 3.0.1 and love it. However, since then I have not been able to connect via Internet Sharing. I too would like to see if Modem Link will work with Black v3.
My solution
In WM6 you need to change the USB ActiveSync Connection under
Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC
to RNDIS
This solved the "no traffic" problem with a ncp vpn client for a cisco connection on a hp ipaq 514 with wm6 for me.

hey dudes...
i have a question about my HD2's ip
im connecting my HD2 via usb ( activesync ) and i want to telnet pc to HD2 but....
but i donno what is my HD2's ip???
how i can detect HD2's ip that it connected to pc via usb ??
( i want to telnet my device )
and i know that HD2's port is 9999
thank u
It wont have an IP, activesync isn't a networking protocol. I doubt you will be able to telnet to it over activesync.

Actually, it will, if your using the rndis driver (which is the default unless your phone has is having issue with connecting to activesync. if it is it needs a hard reset). Open a command prompt and type ipconfig. Then look for the device that has an ip like "169.254.x.x" on windows 7 it is identified as the last local area network connection, in my case, number 4.
The port you specified isn't the default telnet port and if you have a firewall running on the pc you will probably find you have issues connecting, so i would make sure you have the port number correct and then add an exception into your firewall.
samsamuel, you should know better!

ummm wouldn't that method return the PC ip address given to it by the HD2 during an established activesync session?
my suggestion would be to use a tool, such as dotfred's task manager for windows mobile, that can list the network interfaces and ip addresses assigned to those interfaces on the HD2. essentially, this technique is equivalent to running an ipconfig command on the HD2.

Shouldn't do. As far as i'm aware the pc assigns the IP address to the phone and not the other way around. If the phone assigned the pc the IP address for the interface i can't see how it would work correctly. I could be wrong but in all my years in IT i have yet to see a client assign an IP for the server.
nope, cant see anything in ipconfig,
phone on, unlocked and connected to WMDC,
ipconfig returns..

I thought at first maybe you meant netstat /a, but that doesnt show any 169 addresses. (And anyway, arent 169.254 addresses what a machine defaults to when it doesnt have an IP address? like when you turn the pc on with teh network cable unplugged.....)
samsamuel, you probably need to do "ipconfig /all" to see all interfaces.
and m3ph, you could be correct, but lets think for a moment that the phone ***is*** the server...
i would try my method myself but i've shifted to android!

it clearly shows that the PHONE assigned the PC an ip address of "169.254.2.2". look further down and you can see that this PC interface is served by a DHCP server having an ip address of "169.254.2.1". so i tried to ping that ip address, because "169.254.2.1" is clearly not my PC's address.
Code:
C:\Users\Moe ASCIIker>ping 169.254.2.1
Pinging 169.254.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 169.254.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
Ping statistics for 169.254.2.1:
Packets: Sent = 1, Received = 1, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

reply received! so then i opened up dotfred's task manager to confirm my theory. the ipconfig tab under dotfred's task manager clearly shows that the activesync connection is running under "169.254.2.1" assigned to the PHONE.
summary: no need to use dotfred's task manager on your phone. run "ipconfig /all" on your PC with sufficient privileges and note the DHCP server associated with your windows mobile connection interface. THAT DHCP server address is your phone's IP address.
m3ph: i understand why one would think that the PC is the server under an activesync partnership. after all, the PC's internet is shared to the phone in such a partnership, making us think that the PC is the server. however, the clue that gives rise to the concept that the PHONE is the server is the fact that the "repllog.exe" process (activesync) runs on the PHONE and it is in fact the critical data store whose items need to be synchronized under multiple partnerships. "one server, many clients" kind of deal.
Fair enough. You learn something new everyday, eh.
@ASCIIker
Does your pc not have an ethernet port then? Because if it does, why is it not showing? (or did you trim the data you posted?) Even without a network cable attached, it should still assign itself a 169.x.x.x address to that port.
Im not being funny, im genuinely interested in this, because everything ive learned over the past 20 years or so of computing is that 169.x addresses are assigned internally to unconnected network ports.
Plus, i just performed ipconfig /all both with and then without the phone connected, and there is no difference at all.

i do have an ethernet port, but i keep it DISABLED because i am using a usb wifi adapter to reach my home router...too far for cabling! if i don't keep it disabled, it keeps complaining about "network cable unplugged" which really bugs me. besides, i like to keep a tight ship, so all unused hardware is kept disabled and i avoid unnecessary software like the plague! running windows 7 ultimate quite smoothly on reaaaalllllyyyyyy ancient hardware:
-overclocked athlon xp 2500+ to 3200+
-nforce2 ultra motherboard with builtin sound, raid, sata, and network
-1GB corsair DDR2 set up in dual channel mode
-geforce 6200 w/128MB RAM
-1TB WD harddrive and a 200GB WD harddrive
-19" CRT monitor
(kicking it old school!)
the assignment of 169.x.x.x range occurs for ethernet ports configured for DHCP when DHCP doesn't respond. the lack of response could be because the cable is faulty and/or the switch's DHCP is acting up, etc. if the interface is set up with static ip addressing, the 169.x.x.x address will never be assumed.
to the best of my knowledge, the use of the 169.x.x.x range is not specific to the scenario you've mentioned...there are other uses as well...such as for activesync
hah, gotta love win 7, MS finally got one right.
OK, so, below is result of ipconfig /all without phone connected, below that is with phone connected.

wow, the two are exactly the same! i dunno, maybe try running the command under administrator? also, are you certain an activesync connection is established? certain its not connected in disk mode? which flavor of windows 7 is it? what are the usb connection settings set up under windows mobile (i remember a checkbox which toggles some kind of faster usb mode thingie, i'm running android right now but i'm sure you know what i'm talking about)?
seriously, i dunno why your activesync connection won't show up in ipconfig...i just posted my observations for the OP, but it is certainly interesting if the information isn't showing up for you.
win7 ultimate, the dos box is deff an administrator box, AS is 100% connected, faster data mode is off.
However, ive been playing with vxutil which has come up with some interesting stuff,
wifi off, mobile data confirmed disconnected, the only connection being the AS, and when i run the info command (shows adapters and such, just like ipconfig on pc)
it tells me..
Current Ip
HTC68
192.168.55.101
If i have wifi on when i connect AS current IP changes to 192.168.0.1 (which i would expect it to be, but what it shows is that the Ip doesnt change when I connect to AS, i tested this by fixing my wifi to a specific IP, x.x.0.99, , and hey presto, the current Ip stayed at ..0.99 when i connected to AS, and jumped back to ..55.101 when i turned off AS)
In the list of adapters the only one with the x.x.55.101 is 'serial over USB', so that must be the usb connection, (and indeed with all connections disabled, as soon as i disconnect AS the current ip becomes 127.0.0.1) but further down is an adapter called
VMINI1
with
IP 169.254.0.3
gate 169.254.0.3
Pri DNS 127.0.0.0
From the (admittedly brief) googling i did, it seems the VMINI port is a virtual port, so I assume its function is to route to whatever real connection is available.
curiouser and curiouser.
(oh and for my ownsanity i read several sites regarding the 169.x.x.x addresses, , self generated non routable addresses assigned by windows when there is no dhcp server present, so no device would assign another device a 169 address.)
EDIt - oh, ok, googling "Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter" (the name of your adapter from your ipconfig post) and reading up on it, it seems that sometimes in PC hardware you get that in teh network adapters section, and sometimes you get 'Microsoft USB sync' but under mobile devices.
I wonder why,,, I tried starting it (the instructions to start it are 'plug in the phone', lol,) but nothing.
Oh well, i give up, everything works as it should, so its academic really.
thats a lot of great info dude! thanks a bunch! this has been quite a fun thread, i've learned a lot!
while you're at it, maybe you could try plugging it in with "faster data mode" enabled? i guess it would bring us full circle, having exhausted all the variables.
hah, just been to shop, pondering as i went, and faster data and disk mode were gonna be the last tests before i gave up, and with faster turned on there it is! (in pc device manager) Microsoft Windows Mobile Remote Adapter
169.254.2.2 with a dns of x.x.2.1
can even run NMap scans of it.
and in VxUtil it now shows current ip as 169.254.2.1, regardless of whether wifi and what not is on. As soon as faster data is off again, current ip becomes x.x.0.1 with wifi on, and x.x.55.101 with wifi off.
Course, WMDC now doesnt sync, or even connect, lol (and it wont until i reboot the PC, , i know this from a thousand 'araarrgghh i forgot to disable faster data' moments)
Anyway, case closed, i can get on with some unreal tournament now, hehe

Dude, mine works consistantly fine in (what is known as) RNDIS mode. i've only had a problem once and that was actually caused by the phone. A hard reset fixed it. I would suggest you have an issue there somewhere especially if it is a recurring thing.
BTW i'm using windows 7 pro. PC specs in my sig.
When I connected to the wifi via my laptop I got internet access but when I connect to wifi via my Galaxy s4 it connect but I don't have internet access and the same thing with all android phones in my home
P.S:when I reconnect to the wifi maybe 5 times the router grant me the internet access at the fifth time

Check if it happens also with other devices as other phones, tablets or laptops... it sounds as IP conflict, maybe caused by your router in AP mode instead of routing mode. If you have only a device at home, a single provider modem is sufficient; for several devices, you must route and create a private LAN.

We have more than android device and the problem exists in all that devices (smart phones-taplets)

To know it, post here two first numbers for your laptop IP (xxx.xxx.yyy.yyy, post only xxx.xxx). Windows, Start menu, run, type "cmd", at console type "ipconfig" to know your laptop IP.

Your laptop ip (IPv4 Address 192.168.xxx.xxx) is a private IP, so probably your issue is not a IP conflict issue, but if you want to be sure, check your connected ip on S4 (settings, wifi, touch your connected home wifi and you will see your phone IP), all IPs on same net showld be different.
Try to connect from your s4 to your router web page. Type on your internet exllorer in s4 (chrome or internet) your router IP (default gateway IP address listed on your ipconfig report, it typically should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). If you are asked for your router login and password, you are connected to router ok and it should also to internet... maybe a DNS config issue. If you don't get asked for accessing to your router (page not found or something), definitely you are not connected to your router, maybe because a s4 hardware problem, maybe because your router is not allowing to your s4 to connect...
