If you have a google number you can use the Google Talk app. Works for sms.

You mean you can use the Google Voice sms app. Google Talk is just IM
Where can you get the google voice sms app?
It depends on the Telephone provider, try throwing the TelephonyProvider.apk from /system/app/ in a 2.x device onto the TF, and see if it will work then.
It might need some libs too, but idk. Im at work now, cant test it
EDIT::Check /system/etc/permissions/android.hardware.telephony.<CDMA or GSM>.xml
I think that would help too

Groove IP works great for phone calls.
Thanks pal's, but that's not what I had asked for, no?
Reason can be found here:

Works better & faster as sms sync and as a backup/recovery too

You're right I mean Voice. Lol. Groove IP works great to place inbound and outbound calls on the TF. I've been using it.

just though of something, can we use google voice on the tab by forwarding all the calls from our cell phone and be able to receive/make calls that way? what do you guys think?.
And how do you plan on doing this without actually having ever phone functionality? It obviously will work, getting google voice working on the tab. The real problem is getting the phone functionality, well......functional!

hmm i guess you are right and if we have the phone functionality working then there would be no need for google voice....
U cant. theres no dialer app, so theres no option to dial out using GV
Ive never tried GV on android. But im assuming thats how it works (that it integrate into built in dialer) from what ive read

Nice.... thanks for posting that...
You can't receive standard voice calls, but you can set Google Voice to call you on a VoIP line. E.g. I have a Gizmo5 account and use that with CSipSimple to redirect phone calls to.
I found the voice quality over Wifi with headphones to be excellent ;-)

lol what you talking about? yes you can make calls. you gotta hack it of course. see the video two posts up
I have google voice installed on my wifi xoom when I try to call someone it calls my phone then when I answer it my phone calls the contact I tried to call from GV.? Is there any way to just make calls from GV? It also is the same for the browser version of GV. Texting works on both though.
Google voice is not a voice over IP service, it doesn't do calls.

Actually there is a way. Go to the Xoom developers forum and open the thread called "CRTAnim+desktop.........". Go to last page. Note that you have to be rooted to do this.

o man I was thinking it did because when I had it installed on my old g1 back in the day I made calls from my g1 with google voice. But don't remember it calling my g1 then connecting to the contact I called. Sorry for the dumb question. I feel very supid now
okay thanks don't know if I will be rooting this one tho. Can't say I won't because I always do when I get tired of waiting for the newest update lol.
If you dont want to root, and still make voip calls with this, its easy..
get a sipdroid account, at pbxes.org
install sipdroid on the xoom
install something like acrobits SIP dialer, or, you should be able to do it with your google voice account
the thread that tells you how to sync your google voice account to sipdroid is here
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-apps/15366-sipdroid-free-voip-via-google-voice.html
there are some issues today with pbxes servers, so it may not work right at the moment, but trust me, I have been making voip calls from my evo for months using this, and, made tons of calls from the xoom earlier in the week using this method
have fun!
cool thanks I will check that out.

Wait... how did you get Google Voice on your Wi-Fi Xoom?
It's not in the Market.
you dont need google voice on your tablet, per se, you just need a google voice account, ad, you do the configuring from the google voice website..

Hello, You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions
What are the benefits of this integration?
Don't know as I dropped that email in the bit bucket.

Here's a short video demonstration of it http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/24/google-voice-for-sprint-hands-on/
and the official sites:

I guess I've become a total Android/Google whore. I hope they buy Sprint and just bury all the other wireless companies XD
I just did recently, however I am still not sure if this has advantages over having the app. Its either all in or not. I still prefer being able to choose which way I dial out. Whats needed is an option to check off in contacts to force google voice as preferred # to use as dailing out.
The 'integration' feature seems to take away the option to use googlevoice as a way to seperate personal and business use of a single line...?

This service renders your sms/text applocation useless.
You muat use google voice app to recieve text.
Am i missing something? Does google voice have an api for the text? Is that possible to implement that into a sms app?

Voice Plus from the market. You put your contacts into groups in gmail on your pc, set google voice to always dial with google voice (using the widget) and then choose the group in Voice Plus. This is how I call delivery restaurants in my area It works perfectly. I forget about it most of the time.
You have to forward texts to your mobile and turn off notifications for google voice. I am using handcent with google voice and its perfect once I figured that out.
I like having my house phone and cell phone ring when I get a call.
Sent from my SPH-D700
So if we use the integration (just got my invite), we will only have the option of using one phone number? Just to be clear, I have my Sprint number and a separate GV number. If I go ahead with the integration, I have to choose which number I want to keep using?
So their finally making their move. I was warned about this some time ago.

+1 for Voice Plus. It works perfectly. I have no intention of giving up one of my two numbers when this little app makes everything seemless. The only thing I don't like (and this has nothing to do with voice plus) is that any call that is in any way routed through GV right now does not count as a mobile-to-mobile.

The only problem with this is Notifications for Voice Mail is affected too. Id like to retain notifications for VM but maybe they will add this in the future to disable notifications for the 2 services
As long as GV using my mimutes instead 3G I'm not impress.

until google bypasses POTS, gv calls will always be non m 2 m. this is because of the charges associated with POTS and mandated by federal laws.

I use the Google Voice callback app along with Sprint's Sprint to Home plan (extra $5/Month) in conjunction to Google Voice to bypass the Landline to Mobile charge. Works great.
Does anyone know if there's a way to "enable" the Dialer app through a launch (just like the Camera launcher)? I wonder if it's possible to configure native VOIP on the Nexus 7.

If you want don't to deal with Talkatone's in-app ads or want independence from your cell phone, unlike Tablet Talk, then get Google Voice plus $5 Groove IP. Free unlimited calls and SMS text within North America with a standard 10-digit number assigned to your Nexus 7 over WIFI.

I think you can create one-time password even when you don't use two-factor. But that is beside the point as everyone should be using two-factor, there is really no excuse not to secure your account.

You will need to modify the framwork-res.apk to get the dialer to show up.
I did it and it shows up. To add the SIP settings you will need to change your DPI to 320, reboot, add your VOIP setting, change the DPI back to what it was and reboot.
You will then be able to use the native internet calling with the native android dialer.

How would one go about this exactly? What do I need to modify in the framework-res file and where in the filesystem is it? Do I need to be rooted?

I'm also interested to know this, particularly the modification needed for framwork-res.apk
Adding the dialer app would allow for
utilizing the native SIP functions
outbound calling on google voice without using GrooveIP or Tapatalk, both of which are flawed imho.
I use Talkatone myself also for Canadians there is Dell Voice.

This is a very technical procedure and not something I can guide you how to do over a post. Google how to decompile the framework-res.apk. there are a few guides online that can teach you how to do this.

So if I decompile framework-res.apk with APKtool what do I need to add to make the dialer show up?
Thanks!
I am trying to set up my un-activated Continuum to only use Google voice for all calls. I have gone into the Voice settings and tried setting it to make all calls through Voice and set to ask. Neither way work. They all try to use Verizon to place the calls, and not receiving any. I have EC09debinged rom installed. I wonder if it is not working because the phone is looking for a carrier activiation, but I told it to use Voice only. Any ideas?
