Root Level Functionality w/o Root? - Xoom General

Hi all,
I want to use some command line tools such as ping, ifconfig, etc on my Xoom wifi-unrooted. I found a terminal app in the market, but as it should, I'm denied access for a number of the tools. I've looked for a sudo file in which I can put my credentials but can't find it. I'm not sure OS would allow me to edit the file if I did.
Any ideas?

You will have to root to do what you want.

Do you have Widget Locker installed?
I do not. from market?
edit: found it, is there a free way to do it?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
All You have to do is create a file named "enable_glass_lock" and put it in /data/local
If you need step by step on this I can tell you multiple ways (some easier then others, but the easy ones may cost for certain apps, such as root explorer)
I can't find /local in my data folder

Wtf really?
It should be there. What are you using to look?
Root explorer?
Try terminal. You can use any free terminal emulator from the market. Use thee commands
$ su
# ls
This should show a list of directories
then:
# CD data
# ls
Again a list should show up and local should be there.
You can also try to change to the local directory to see if you get any errors :
# CD local
If you can CD to local then it exists and you are either not looking properly or whatever app you are using doesn't see it. Terminal is sure fire way to see if it exists.

You can use terminal emulator good free app from the market. Just type su when you start the app each time so you have full access to the file system.

Don't forget to pick up busybox off the market so you have more useful commands similar to typical linux command line functions. It not required exactly, but does extend what you can do and there are plenty of other apps that will need it.
Or to properly root it and much easier 1 time only, use gingerbreak

Mac compatibility

Hello, I am just curious if anyone knows of updates that will allow mac compatibility for rooting and bootloader unlocks. I know a lot of this is new, but I do not own a windows computer and I am not able to find a way to root my phone with my macbook.
I appreciate any help.
edit: I am also still running 4.1.52 and cannot get my phone to update... I thought there was a more current software available? Everytime I go into my phone to "update" is says my device is up to date.
bump it up!
In terms of rooting, can you not use gingerbreak? It's an apk so it doesn't matter if you're on a Mac. You just need to get it onto your phone somehow.
I'm also on a Mac, and for most things, I use the OS X version of adb and redo any windows batch scripts to bash style. There aren't too many mods that use actual windows execs, except rsd lite.
Otherwise you'll need bootcamp / virtualbox and a copy of windows...

You can do absolutely everything on Mac. I'm almost sure someone post a guide about fastboot, sbf_flash on a mac/linux

Just run VMware Fusion & run a windows emulation..

I've done everything (except flash radio) on mac. There are binaries available for mac for "moto-fastboot", "adb (google SDK)" and "sbf_flash". Just search the forums. All commands will be through the terminal and will be the same as linux version
moto-fastboot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092
sbf_flash is here: http://blog.opticaldelusion.org/2011/04/universal-binaries-running-same.html#more
and there's a version of adb in gingerbreak.apk if you don't want to install adb with the android sdk.
I dont know what that means... haha! Hopefully superoneclick works for the atrix eventually.
thank you for the responses.
I did everything in a virtual machine. No problems.

Add the directory where fastboot and adb are to the $PATH variable in ~/.profile
Also you can add it temporarily with the command set $PATH=$PATH:/path/to/adb
Edit: detailed instructions.
In your home folder create a folder, let's call it android_tools
Copy adb, moto-fastboot, etc to it.
Open terminal
type nano .profile
add in the file the next line:
export PATH=$PATH:~/android_tools;
press ctrl+x, then y to save the file and quit from nano
close Terminal
Open Terminal then type adb or moto-fastboot or whatever is inside android_tools and this command should be recognized.
if it fails, maybe you need to set exec permissions to the commands, open terminal, type cd ~/android_tools, then type chmod +x *
Hope this help

ADB help
Hey, just a few questions. I'm brand new to ADB tools.
I got my cmd prompt to show me the serial of my device using adb devices. Im sure this means my adb tools are working. Ive only installed SDB tools and platform tools.
Do I need to download the 2.2 tools?
The problem is when I type in the first cmd i get a operation error.
2nd question is how do I get all of your gps.config code into the cmd prompt. Do I place the file somewhere on my computer for it to be recognized in your second cmd step.
Thanks in advanced.

You can push manually with a file manager. Its in op also.
Also the GPS. Conf is a file.

Why am I getting the operations error anyways? Should I be working off of tools or platform tools?
Sent from my SCH-I400 using XDA App
Ive tried a lot of different ways to get it to work and I think ive gotten to the point where it might be something else other than my commands. I just get a mountperation not permitted. The following is an example of what I typed. The $ sign was created after I typed in adb shell.
1 "adb shell
2 $mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
3 mountperation not permitted"
Tell me I did something wrong.
You need to "su" before you try and mount -_-

I messed around with that for awhile and I think I got a little further. I seem to still get a little stuck after I mount.
1. /android-sdk/platform-tools>adb shell
2. $su
3. #mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
4. mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
5. #
On line 4 the cmd prompt just spits that back out at me and it ends up back at # again. How do I know it mounted and how do I begin the pushing process. My gps.conf file is in my platform-tools folder. Thanks!
Throw me a bone. Im so close! I can feel it!
How do I get gps.conf file?
link in OP just takes me to a page with a lot of text-No download.
Right click and click save as or save link as. It should automatically name it as gps.conf

Minirome, are you simply he'll Benton pushing this thing via adb? If not, and you just want to get your gps to work, copy the thing to your sd card, download es file explorer, and cnp the thing to the proper dir

Permissions question

This may amount to a n00b question, but here goes: After rooting my Kindle(7.2.3), my GF decided she loved the new look and functionality of it so she wanted me to do the same. Hers was on 7.3, which made the process different, but I was able to do it successfully. I've already installed Market and Google Play, and am now trying to remove the ads by changing Dtcp_apk.apk to Dtcp_apk.bat. However, I keep getting an Operation Failed message. I realize this has to do with changing the permissions, but I can't for the life of me remember how to do it, or where exactly I read it when I rooted my personal Kindle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
So...
Code:
adb shell su -c "mount -o remount,rw ext4 /system"
adb shell su -c "mv /system/app/dtcp_apk.apk /system/app/dtcp_apk.bak"
...doesn't work?
And now, my n00bness shall shine through. Haha. After I rooted the first Kindle(7.2.3), I only had to change the dtcp_apk.apk file to dtcp_apk.bat and it worked like a charm. The method you are describing, I am not familiar with. Is that something I do within a cmd window? I apologize for not knowing, I just didn't have to do it before...
Yes, those are entered from the command line. The first one remounts the system partition as read/write, allowing changes to be made to that partition. The second one simply renames the file so the system can't find it. The "su -c" part tells the shell to run the commands as the root user, needed on stock systems.
I'm guessing your file manager your using doesn't have full root access I use es file explorer and you go into settings root settings and check them all then you can rename that file you don't have to learn to use adb to do this...
