Well i want to put a HTC Hero rom on my T-mobile MT3G 32b device. I came across http://theunlockr.com/. I watched the rooting video here and the rom installation here.
Well i know that my device is the exact same as in the video so i pretty much can't mess up the procedure unless i am completely useless as a human being.
Well i just want to know even if i do the procedure correctly if i can brick my phone? My GF was kind enough to buy me the phone for our anniversary about a week or 2 ago and yeah i love it but would like a hero rom. I just don't want to make my gift into a paper weight and get the misses angry at me for ruining a 250 dollar phone that lasted about 3 weeks.
Thank you for your time it is much appreciated.
its well worth it to go ahead and do it i actually hated the phone in stock form and wanted to get rid of it but after i installed the HERO Rom i actually love the phone, FYI i traded a iphone 3g for this phone and hated it with the original t-mobile software and wanted my iphone back but after the HERO rom upgrade i love it.
there are only two steps in the rooting process that can brick your phone that i know of.
the first one is while updating the SPL and the second one is while updating the RADIO.
once you get those two things to the right versions then you cannot brick your phone. you can install/uninstall as many roms as you want as long as you don't mess with the SPL or RADIO.
also, if your doing the one-touch root just make sure your phone doesn't turn off or the battery die while its working, then you could brick your phone.
and its definitely worth rooting to put the hero rom on there.
alright thanks for your replies they are much appreciated yeah i think i will go ahead and do this then and will make sure my battery is fully charged =D.
One More question how often do you have to update the spl and radio. or are they one time only things? I am new to this so just wanna make sure i don't mess anything up.

Since you are on the MT3G you do not have to worry about changing the SPL or radio. Just perform the one-click and then load the rom of your choice.
If you plan to run Hero then be sure to get a class 6 microsd and use the rav recovery image (part of the rooting process) to format it with 3 partitions. It will be an option when you go to recovery mode. I actually recommend a 128mb linux swap but that requires some manual partitioning and I'm not sure if you are prepared for something like that.
I have loaded just about all the roms and I still have the original spl and radio.
Oh alright ill be sure to look into that. Thanks again for all your help.
I was attempting to flash 2.x using behnaam and lox's rom.
Rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592596
Here is the HBoot info previous to my tinkering:

Phone is rooted using adb.
I used unlockr's guide to flash a custom recovery image onto my CDMA hero and that worked fine, here is the guide I followed:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-flash-a-new-recovery-image-if-you-are-already-rooted/
I first moved the radio recommended for the rom by the dev to root on the sd and renamed it update.zip. After, I used the recovery image to wipe, then apply update.zip from sdcard. It seemed to flash fine, as it said please select reboot to complete, which I did, and it completed and rebooted the phone.
Once rebooted it gave me the android installing software image without anything else for a while, then turned off. I cannot seem to awaken my phone with any combo of keys or by plugging it into its use cable. The charging led doesn't even light up anymore.
Well I seem at the moment to be SOL, unless someone can come by and throw me a bone. I really am at a loss as to what I did wrong, as I have always read to do radio first. Not to mention as I watched it install radio it said it was installing radio.
Thanks for the help everyone.
You attempted to flash a GSM ROM to your CDMA phone, this is why your phone is bricked. I'm not sure if its possible to recover, people with more experience than I have can help you there. The problem was flashing a GSM ROM to CDMA. You are not the first to have done it, we all mess up from time to time.
Uuuh Umm...that software was for the GSM hero's NOT THE CDMA Hero.............bless your heart.
Ah **** I thought it was CDMA, guess it was a bad idea jumping into roms while still a noob.
Yea I only got the radio installed, not the rom, although that probably doesn't make a difference.
I don't think the phone can be recovered once you attempt to flash the Radio, but I could be wrong.
Hmm well if worst comes to worst I'm going with what I read on another thread and saying that I was installing the update that it found when I went to phone details and halfway through the update the phone just turned off and won't turn on anymore.
According to the other thread once it is bricked beyond belief and you play stupid they can't prove you wrong.
Best case scenario they replace it, and I won't feel bad seeing as it was a defective phone that is allowing dust to enter under the screen. But that who ordeal is an entirely different rant...lol
Sigh

Yea, you're right. Flashing a GSM rom on the CDMA won't really break much. It's flashing the radio that bricked it.

All is lost!!!!
Yep RUU brought back Error 170 cannot connect to phone.
Maybe the sprint repair stores will not be so asshole-esque this time around.
I'm hopeful though, as I have read a few posts about them exchanging it for a new one. Which after a bunch of calls I had hoped to have happen due to the dust thing, but oh well.
Maybe I will get lucky and my brick will actually turn out to be a phoenix in disguise.
unfortunately, flashing the GSM radio on pretty much destroys the phone.
i think its got something to do with the voltage and electricity used by the GSM radios. probably higher than what the CDMA radios use, so you didn't really brick your phone, you 'fried' it in a sense.
sorry bout that... but if you have the equipment protection plan you can probably get it replaced real easily, since the sprint people probably won't really understand what's wrong.
again I am reminded why I dont screw with radios

Once you do get it replaced and you want to put a custom ROM on it, look at the first page of this forum and you'll find sticky threads regarding four different ROMs you can put on your phone (two production release and two experimental betas).
I would suggest either MoDaCo's rom or Fresh rom. I use Fresh in mine and had no problems (although I have used MoDaCo's before and also had no issues).
Also, if you want to root the phone, there are also sticky threads that will tell you how to root your phone from Windows, Mac and Ubuntu.
Good luck.
Yep thanks everyone.
Yea I figured once no buttons would do anything and the leds wouldn't even light up for charging that it was pretty much fried. Definitely got that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.
I definitely should have come into this section specific to my phone and read this info instead of just doing tons of searches and getting mixed up.
Although I'm hesitant on flashing to a replacement phone if I get one, I think I will but this time make a post just to verify without a doubt. I'm sure many wouldn't mind a simple post asking if this will blow up my phone or not, lol.
Once again thought, thanks for the help. Especially to a noob that made a real noob mistake lol.
Edit: All is well, I contacted sprint chat and they confirmed I will be receiving a brand new phone when I arrive at a sprint store, and with the chat log sent to my email and printed out the repair stores cannot pull any of their gimmicks on me, they are getting a command from sprint HQ after all. This is nice, I kill my phone and I get a brand new one without dust, and this time the invisible shield goes on asap.

while the attempted flash was boneheaded , this (what I quoted) was very smart. I've had them try to reverse the decision and noted on my account in the past. All ended well, but a hard copy of the convo between me and Corporate would have been nice to have.
props for a good idea.
if you don't want trouble with rooting and flashing new ROMs to your phone, try flipz's pre-kitchen. just to try it, i RUU'd my phone and re-rooted it through that app, and its simply amazing. you just sit back and watch, don't even have to do anything.
Ok so its pretty funny but whoever it was who says that once you flash for the first time its addictive, I do have to agree. I will be getting my phone tomorrow because they had to replace it and I will be flashing, although this time I will play it safe and triple check before I get click happy...lol
So what are the danger zones in flashing, like what can brick or kill your phone? I know playing with radios can kill it if the wrong one is flashed, and I know powering off or interrupting a flash will kill/brick, but what else.
I know people said firmware alone usually will not brick you.

With the CDMA Hero, you do not have to flash the Radio. So if your attempting to flash the Radio, you're doing it wrong.

Well if the custom recovery is installed (RA-heroc), if the phone looses power while flashing the firmware, you are usually still safe, because you (usually) still boot into the recovery without issues.
Like I already said, if you want I can walk you thru the entire process thru an IM client, Steam, or Skype.
Oh ok thanks, I'm actually headed up to PA for a little trip but definitely will hit you up on that offer when I get back.
So i Just got my replacement HTC Hero from Sprint. IT HAS 1.5 !!!!
So here is what you need to do if you want to have 1.5 back:
1) cal sprint tech support and complin about the phone not working right, It gets to hot while making calls or using it at all * this one is important *, the battery only last 2 1\2 to 3 hours after full charge, data never connect correctly and you have to refresh it by going into and then out of airplane mode, and what ever else you can think of or are really having a problem with.
2) tell them your phone worked fine until the new 2.1 update released on sprint's website May 19th 2010, and you followed every instruction they gave
3) DEMAND !! ( I'm not usually like this, but it was the only way they would do it ) Demand a new htc hero be sent to you, and tell them to request in the notes that it has 1.5
**** IMPORTANT *****
The replacement phone comes from asurion, your insurance provider. They are currently working on flashing all HEROs with 2.1, so if you want 1.5, DO THIS TODAY !!!!
4) once you get the new one, make sure you reflash the 2.1 RUU on the old phone as to wipe everything and remove traces of customization * as they look for these and can charge you $75* Then call sprint and activate the replacement.
5) **** MOST IMPORTANT STEP ******
MAKE SURE YOU MAIL THIS BACK WITHIN 15 DAYS, as sprint will charge you a $500 NON REFUNDABLE Charge to your account !!!!!
Also once you get the new phone you can update the firmware to the
RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test Firmware, as it has a built in ROOT ACCESS. just follow steps at: http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/9542-how-repair-your-bootloader-after-using-2-1-ruu.html to get root access.
That's it I hope this helps !
Now I am going to enjoy custom ROMs again !

Actually u just got lucky. Asurion does not know what theyre shipping wether its new, used and what software it runs.
woot woot i was still in the 30 days from purchasing phone so i went to the store and got a new phone with 1.5 on it since i pushed 2.1 before i researched rooting, now lets see if I can get this one rooted, any really easy ways?
thats what i did as well, use fresh kitchen took me all of about 30 seconds to root.... then i went and updated the recovery to 1.5.6 and installed damagecontrols 2.08.1 rom and so far i like it, its like having a stock 2.1 rom but with root access and a tad bit more features.

You got lucky. Maybe do some research next time before doing some updates blind.
For those holding out on root & awaiting "Official 2.2 OTA", DON'T!! -> read w/in ->>
When I got my Evo, I wanted to wait for the official Sprint ROM/OTA upgrades because I wanted to keep my phone stock. I didn't want root to affect my phone's ability to OTA upgrade and get the latest and greatest from Sprint.
After many advice from others, I decided to root. This is where you will see the repeating theme - "I rooted and loaded a ROM and have never looked back", or "I rooted and upgraded the ROM from the dev section and have never been happier". I certainly agree.
The fact is, when (now IF) the official 2.2 comes out, you will get the EXACT OTA content here just as quickly (probably faster) and be able to flash to that if you wish. Most likely, at that time, you will want an enhanced version such as deodexed. It is not worth holding out on root just because you want the OTA.
With root, you are opening new options such as forcing the phone to roam only, make real/full backups, modify your phone both visually and functionally, and so much more. After root, battery life can certainly be improved by tweaking your phone (remove bloatware, keep unwanted services from starting, etc.)
When I got my Epic, I rooted immediately. I have been running DK28 since it dropped and enjoying what 2.2 has to offer. If/when the official comes out, I will upgrade. There is simply no risk of missing out.
So for you who are on the line, I encourge you to root and move forward. You will have a new world of options and enjoy your phone so much more.
Cheers.
It's true, and we're not that far from seeing a true Gingerbread port too.
Not to mention, with Odin, this phone is extremely hard to FUBAR and very easy to revert back to stock if needed. One click root makes the rooting process brainless...
I was in the same boat a few months ago. I viewed "rooting" as a hack or purposely "damaging" the phone. Eventually, I caved in; everything is hindsight from that point. Now, I will NEVER use a stock ROM again. Having access to the system allows me to take control of the device that I OWN; not Sprint or Samsung. If I don't want and application on the phone, I simply remove it. If I want to change the appearance, I install a theme.
Honestly, if you own an Epic, there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't root the phone. Heck, I'm not even using 2.2 for the lack of a stable GPS lock...

I agree with most of this. But from my point of view, I don't even use it for the control, I use it cause it works better. Oh, and the themes. I just hope the devs and themers stick around a while, cause I have this phone for another 20 months :/
new devs and themers will come along. the cdma touch pro 2 is approching 18 months in age and when i stop by that forum, its just as busy as ever, and i dont even recognize the names of roms people are talking about, because the chefs that were cooking when i was rocking that have moved along, but new ones are stepping up in their place.
Installed TrulyEpic 1.2 last night in just a few minutes. No problems at all. GPS is fantastic (I thought it was working before, but now - ) Is it just me, or does the stock ROM limit the display brightness? I think it actually LOOKS better but YMMV.
It's comforting to know that I now have a phone that will probably never be truly obsolete for the next couple years as long as there are ROM builders out there.
but i tried to root using the one click and recovery and had issues it would tell me permission denied at the end after it reboooted, i used z4 to root and it worked fine, tried to use it again and still same thing, then installed rom manager and then try clockwork, nogo. so i took it all off and will jsut deal with it when it comes ota

I'd agree with you, except that I've had all kinds of issues rooting my Epic, ranging from USB drivers that fail to install, various one click root scripts that error out, a cruddy usb cable from Samsung, and an inability to get Odin to even look at my phone crosseyed.
I'm not brainless ... but nothing about rooting and flashing my phone has been straightforward. After wasting hours wading through (volunteer-written, open source, karmically-blessed) inconsistent instructions, I've lost patience. I just want an official, OTA copy of Froyo that isn't going to brick my phone or waste my time.

I've never had this problem. There must be something wrong and it isn't the one click. Could be your USB cable. Make sure your phone is in debugging mode. The OP is 100% right. Why use any stock ROM? If we do ever get the OTA, our devs will make it better and in about 100 different flavors.

I have been holding out but even my patience is tested...
It was tested even more today trying to find a way to root without a PC (as I don't own a PC... well I have one that runs Win2K and no internet at home... yeah.) I did download z4root but it never got past the first screen...it literally loaded for an 1hr the 1st time and 35mins the second before I got ticked and just uninstalled. I may be new to the android scene (long time winmob user that fled after testing a wp7 craptastic phone) but something just isn't right here X/ I mean really.... I simply want flash (outside of skyfire) and to wirelessly tether without having to pay ANOTHER $30 a month.... ...
So yeah, /rant
Ota can come ANY DAY NOW *looks angrily at the sky*
Epic is as Epic does

yep. Im staying on stock for the simple fact that my phone aint broke why try and fix it lol.
I recently flashed DK28, then converted to ext4 and the bonsai mod. Froyo means I can view more webpages and download the froyo apps from the market place. ADW lancher was slow on 2.2, but lancher pro works fine. Also I wasn't getting great battery life but it's back to normal after I set my screen brightness to automatic. Overall I'm happy with my decision.
I too was one that didn't want to root and I was paying for the sprint hotspot :-\ but once I got the first bill for $130 I quickly youtube how to videos on rooting the epic and never looked back. 2.2 runs great with my only bug being, on some calls out I couldn't hear the other person unless I put it speaker phone. I worked my way around this bug by just hitting the speaker button before every call then quickly hit it again to shut off the speaker. It takes very little effort and I'm happier than ever with my epic and I don't give a rats ass about the OTA 2.2
The reason i first rooted was for wireless tether and to get rid of all the bloatware. After that i found all these awesome root apps like ADFREE and ShootME titatanium back up and many others and i can now not live with out adfree its the best app ever!!
After trying wireless tether it was ok then mobile ap came along and i love it. And for this reason alone im staying stock and honestly this is the first phone that does everything i need and doesnt give me any issues even on stock rom. I did get a custom kernal i flashed a good amount of the 2.1 roms and didnt really care for any of them besides noobnls rom. i mean i like custom roms that are blank of extra bloatware and what not.
But yes i agree dont wait to root, you get so many added benefits to make your phone run fast and get many free apps that are ad supported but because of ad free they are like the real one.
Best decision to root.
And for any reason i need to go back to stock to take the phone in i have all the stock flashables on my sd card so i just flash them and its easy as pie.
One click root never gave me any issues with the samsung cord or with any other cords i have.
I agree, I just got tired of it and rooted and installed a custom ROM (Trulyepic 1.2). It's definitely nice. It's also nice to feel free from the shenanigans of corporations trying to do as little as possible to make money off you while maintaining PR.
I admit, it's a bit scary to do with your phone. I'm lucky in that I've gotten familiar with rooting with my Viewsonic Gtablet, but I have to admit that I was pretty nervous the first time.

I am donating my Sharp Aquos Crystal to ONLY THE BEST DEVELOPERS. Its beat up and its been abused but there is potential in the phone for root, ROM and Mods. I will pick the developer and i'm basically hoping to send it to the best only! Please message me and let me know if you have any interest in doing substantial research on this phone and taking its code apart. I already tried and it needs a 3rd party program to access the boot-loader portion of the file system and ill tell you which one an provide a dropbox link to the loader you can download to get into it. I could easily take it apart and find a back-door but i work too often and cannot find the time to tear it down properly and look for vulnerabilities for free; Thus i am donating this phone as i will be replacing it with one i never dropped on the floor ;p cosmetically challenged yes, functionally operational YES. comes with a charger, box and receipt? YES. I want this phone to be developed into the most reliable and functional phone possible and if i have to do all the work myself... well i wont. or at least i wont share my findings if i have to spend time away from my family which is why i am DONATING this phone. I am a programmer for a very nice search engine we all use and i have already found 2 back-doors into the phone which i will also send over via PM. the problem is i cannot access the loader or storage from a PC using the standard drivers, only from within the phone. I need your help! You get a free beat up phone, and the opportunity to play with it. It will come loaded with Boost Unlimited to test the MMS, 4G, Calls etc. but i will only pay for 1 month. you MUST figure it out within 1 month! I can only spend 2 hours on my saturdays playing with it and i went back to my rooted G3 because it beats the Aquos in every category except for sleek design. however, i think this phone can be a powerhouse for entry level users and with its power i know it can be everyone's favorite device. I want ROMS. I want unattended root and i want this thing to be the leader in aftermarket mods. Can we make it happen? idk we will have to see. The CM team shot it down instantly and said SHARP will not release the loader in the US but i dont work for SHARP, so here in beautiful southern california i am safe playing with the software and you will be ok because no laws restrict us to OpenWare software like the rest of the messed up planet. I have permission from google to modify the software strictly for research so we are clear.

I already shipped the phone out to Palo Alto, CA. I have purchased another 306SH and I am waiting to hear back from the developer, a friend of mine from college. Hopefully by the end of the month we will have unattended root with a rom compatibility list. He has all the time we need to test and program the phone. I couldn't get past ROM upload without bricking the thing so maybe he will discover a better method. Like I said in my original post I only have a few hours a week to play with the code and its not enough time to test any configuration changes without losing my daily driver. (since my company blackberry doesnt make calls outside of company contacts list, I needed my personal phone still, but already replaced it.)
As far as the loader goes, i found a way in using ODIN4 but the newest update locked out the back door so once again i was stuck; my buddy is going to have to find another way into the folder. I will keep everyone posted on the results as i will be testing the first round next weekend. I'm currently playing in Kitchen with CM12 and testing the drivers in my box so worst case scenario i will find the right ROM config and stabilize it so we have at least 1 modifiable ROM to mess around with. I will release download links this coming weekend for the Alpha Release CM12 ROM and with any luck, we will have unattended root as well. I see great things coming soon for this device.
I am also working on a nice little camera mod that we will all use daily from an unreleased packet @ work and cooking it up for the Aquos so stay tuned! it should apk install on factory firmware which is what i will be testing after thursday evening.
Standby team Actual, We will have results soon Hooah!

Successful root was achieved before i shipped it out using company software however i cannot release corporate software to the public since i have no way to remove it from the building (and i value my career.) but soon enough, i will provide source and links to the backdoor once we find the next one in the update. I just wish Sharp wasn't so dang grumpy about releasing their crap OS to developers. If they did, i'm sure most of the android community would be picking these 306's up off the shelves at an alarming rate. Oh well, sucks to be Sharp USA. When they want to collaborate to ID security risks, I will give them the exact same answer they gave me- "Nope i dont care who you are, you are not getting our OS pack or loader software."
hahaha we will see about that ;p

Nope, in fact the opposite. My friend couldn't get into the phone so I drove up to Palo Alto to help him out friday night over the past weekend and it was a train wreck. We salvaged the OP and called it quits first thing yesterday morning. He showed me his progress which was about as far as i got as well. So we threw the broken Aquos at a wall and I sold the nice new black one I purchased, to some guy off CraigsList for $30. Sorry guys but it needs too much work and without Sharp (Shāpu Kabushiki-gaisha) providing any information as to what driver/ loader sequence it is we need to tap into the chip via 3rd party, Its a lost cause. (my work console gets into it in under 30 seconds, tho it's very illegal and cannot be replicated without losing my career.) We tried everything for 20 hours straight the first day and 12 hours the 2nd when I finally stood up and tossed the phone down something like 4 flights of stairs and off the balcony. surprisingly enough, it didn't break easily.
I don't have time to tear down the code in terminal and cook the exploit since my job is 50 hours a week already. Any more wasted time on this project and I'll lose my car, job and likely my wife.
I recommend selling the crap Aquos and getting the S6 Edge, which I just picked up today. I already have root access using ODIN and a modified exploit i found on a chinese website and i'm working on a ROM for it as we speak.
Its just a damn shame that Sharp doesn't want their products to take off here in the States, seeing how well the Aquos performs. I explained it to them and they just said "nope! we will press charges if you pursue any further modification."
So Thats the end of that. sorry guys i really tried and my buddy worked for an entire week and only got to where i was after the first 48 hours. I see the exploit looking through the logs, but i was told federal charges will be filed if i release the exploit to the public in the form of auto-run APK which i also could not get running properly. It all comes down to the platform.
They didnt say anything about publiclysharing the code tho. I am having my wife look over the documents for legality issues and if she cant find anything stating raw-code release is applicable, i will release my logs from work and all the project work we have so far. its about 11gbs of logs and code and a few extra gigs of failed modified programs we wrote. Like i said, we tried it all
Perhaps one of you more fine tuned developers can work through my data and see what sort of application will backdoor into the system. As it stands today though, The latest firmware release is tighter than a tick's a$$ and downgrading is about as hard as getting weed legal in federal court.
As my buddy Rob says: "Basically, I can get into iOS' Pants in 12 minutes, but Sharp's Loader is wearing an electrified chastity belt and that b17CH swallowed the keys. We either wait for the next release and modify the stock update so it thinks it's a normal update, or wait for the company to get hammered and drop the pants to let us play."
I have absolute 0 hope for this device.
The Aquos is toasted as far as the modification community should be concerned.
Galaxy S6 Edge tho... This thing is a beast. Ill be releasing my findings tonight or tomorrow once i finalize this ROM modification (cooking up some extra settings, modifying prop and removing bloat + some LED and screen mods.)
I also pre-ordered the new Blackberry Venice that "supposedly runs android" through my companies pre-order form, so in the next couple months hopefully ill get my hands on that unit. BB's have been running Android/ linux based software for quite a while now (since 10.1) but it is emulated and not native. Hopefully, the "venice" developed by Samsung will yield some surprising performance and efficiency results that we all want and need.
Standby Team, I'm working as fast as i can, Hooah!

thanks for information and for your work .. what happen with tools and code that you have can you share it?
ok guys im sorry i have been AWOL this week we started a new project and i just dove into it so we havn't had time to re-work the code. My wife says there is a clause in the paperwork Sharp sent me stating i cannot release any portion of their software whether modified or not. so basically all i can release is the collaborative work i've done with Rob which isnt much because its mostly factory firmware modifications and common knowledge. needless to say, There is a reason we salvaged the OP.
I know alot of you have sent PM asking for clues and access to my software. I have tried to reply to all of you but you need to change your security settings here on XDA because even though you can send me a message, i cannot reply.
I will be sending out the first batch of ADB run-around to PM's that actually go through. The only loophole we can find is private collab which is legal in the US so once i get the first round out, i will email from my personal account the rest of the changes we had made.
*Note* Google is offering $40k USD for the exploits in the new software so you can understand my hesitance to release any loaders that can potentially tap into most phones' firmware systems. That's like handing over 40k for free. Ill tune up and debug the programs rob and i built and send them out but they do not work for the 306. And since i dont have the 306 anymore, i cannot test any more modifications.
Fastboot isn't the way into the 306. you need to get your hands on the initial (Extremely buggy) release, modify the prop and boot directory, and then let the phone update to the new software with the new settings. It will blackout and sit on the Aquos emblem for like 30 minutes, but once recovered the root stays. thats the only way we got it to even try to respond but still no SU access and /detect-root shows no success however there is now root folder access. Then using ADB push the old OS back onto it and it will keep modified folder access for root but will not boot completely at this point. that's as far as we got and couldn't move past it. I asked a coworker last week about it and he gave me some new ideas, however i dont have the phone anymore and i don't plan on purchasing another one since i have moved onto the S6 Edge and another project from work.
Im sorry guys but i'm out of time on the 306. I tried for more than 2 months and its a no-go. I have heard of people gaining root and removing GSM lock, but they have way too much time invested and completely re-wrote the directories by hand.
If you are still dead set on the 306SH, Download the newest firmware, http://www.sharpusa.com/Support/ProductDetail.aspx?modelid=9FCA5482-7A08-1BF8-7AA9-F29AF5CB9A19 and unpack it. connect to ADB and \fastboot-dirw acc1. then # mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/block/st19/system, # exit.
Here is the problem. Permissions are set by something else in the ROM and when you attempt to push anything other than a verified update, it crashes. Not sure why. 18 hours on that subject alone -_-
When looking through the Unpacked ROM, It's like line 42-45 and you can see the malicious lockout, that when deleted bricks the phone. I played with the rom and couldn't figure out why every damn program uses the same sequence and references the same directory before it even begins to process. its a classic lock-out. Loader software barely bypasses it but you need to find the drain in the phone. There is an application somewhere that constantly reference checks the line 42 and if its not present, the phone shuts down and bootloader locks up.
Do yourself a favor and upgrade. Its an outstanding phone, but its not worth the headache.
This thread will be deleted in about a month so PM me and make sure you can receive a response.
OP 306SH-Decomissioned permanently unless i get another one. sorry guys. And i go back to school monday for summer classes so i wont be working on anything except work projects for the next 8 weeks. But I will be back with some excellent news for the S6 Edge by sunday night. I have root and I'm on day 5 of my custom ROM and this thing is Fast! like whoa thats a powerPC fast. I recommend the Edge to anyone struggling with the 306. Samsung really stepped it up.

This is the method that DOES NOT WORK. the second one gives some access but permissions are all screwed up like i said earlier. Somebody needs to tear it completely down.
I took a look at psneuter and the root concept mentioned in that thread for method 2. Didn't see anything that would determine permissions to be out of wack. Could you explain what you are referring to @jack_famous?
