The hard drive space shows 13 gig and memory if I add used and free totals to 550. Is this normal?
It sounds about right. It has 1GB of RAM, however some of it is devoted to the GPU. And after formatting and the OS, 13GB is about what's left to the user on a 16GB model.

Thanks for the explanation.

Hi,
I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad tabled with memory specifications of 1GB RAM and 16GB HDD. All nice, until I go in Settings and check at settings/applications/storage use/running and all which show a disappointing values of total memory ~550MB RAM (almost half...) and ~12GB (almost 25% less...).
For HDD, I can not accept that the rest of 4GB are hidden because are used by Android 3.1 or used by file system format. Even so, Lenovo should be honest and declare total memory against available memory even is "eaten" by various reasons.
For RAM, I can not find any explanation why I see only half.
Q1-Can somebody explain me if tablet is faulty or has a kind of manufacturing issue ?
Q2-Can somebody to check if his tablet has the same memory discrepancies versus manufacturer specifications ?
Thanks!
All tablet's have this "cheaty" way of listing specs. But if you buy a laptop and it says 200gb. You can be pretty sure that windows 7 or what ever is installed is taking up space. The same applies to RAM. While the system may come with 4gb ram, the system has "eaten" som of it.
So, I don't really see the complaint here?

The specs will never match the actual available memory since there is always space allocated to system whether it be ram or hdd

It's likely that the other half is being reserved as video memory.
Hi,
Thanks for reply. I've done a check on other tablets and they show the same lower memory than spec, except Asus 501 I think with ICS 4.
However, I think it should be specified total phisical memory and available memory.

Total available ram will be different and much less than the specs on any Android or mobile device. The system uses memory to load OS and for graphics.
Also the memory space will be less formatted and with all the system apps.
Just like a formatted hard drive or ssd is less than spec.
I do not know why people still complain about these things it is pretty ignorant. Have you ever owned a computer, tablet or cell phone before?

Shows around 1.85GB of RAM on my Nexus 4.
1.85gb ram available or total?

Total
Its normal. It's similar to how your system data takes up a set amount of space so the phone says you only have ~13gb total when the internal storage is 16gb. The system is holding that RAM hostage (lol) for its normal processes

Exactly. The difference between calculating between 1024 and 1000.
Not really being held hostage more like the memory is being reserved for system processes. But yeah same thing similar to internalized storage

What is the total amount of space that is showing in the 16 GB version?
For Me (Stock Rom - Rooted - Clockwork Recovery)
It shows 12.96GB, which seems a lot less than it should be.
4gb is reserved for android os
12.96 is right.
kinda like how RAM is advertised as 2GB
it is really ~1.8GB of RAM
It's the correct amount, everyone gets the same. Android system reserves way to much in my opinion.

it counts bootloader, recovery, internals, etc.. not just android

Still, 3GB is a bit over-reserved?
/dev, for example, is 936MiB and only 32KB is used :-/
Remember that the advertised storage capacity is in decimal notation, whereas the figures given by the device are in binary notation.
1 decimal GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes
1 binary GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (can be written as GiB to avoid confusion)
So 16 GB advertised capacity is 14.9 GiB so there's only about 2 GiB in use by / reserved for the OS.

RAM is usually advertised in binary notation, so 2 GB means 2 GiB.

Where exactly are we looking at the amount of GB's in settings under storage? Or under 'Internal Storage' ?
Not sure if my 16gig is showing up as 8

Settings->Storage, the "Total Space" shown at the top under "Internal Storage". Mine shows 12.92GB.

Hey guys I was looking at my storage space today and i noticed I only have 111GB useable. I know that several GB are consumed by the system image and that the whole 128GB is not available, but 17GB used by the system image seems excessive.
you usually get 119GB after format, 128 x 7%, 119GB remains then OS partition and then more since its 64bit.
My 64gb has 54gb free
They define GB by 1000 where it's really 1024 so formatted capacity is less,
http://www.ussscctv.com/harddrivesizecapacitiescalculator.aspx
Mine had 111 GB free straight out of the box.

Same here!
The larger the amount of storage, the larger the system partition. Dunno why, but it has been this way as long as I can remember.
Ok cool. Thanks for the replys

I recently got this s7 edge and I found the memory RAM is only 3.5gb instead of stated 4gb, is it common? Things like 1024 and 1000 conversion couldn't explain the big gap.

That's user/app-accessible memory. The phone itself reserves a decent chunk for the operating system.
Mine reports 679MB reserved, 2GB used, and 1.3 available. Add all that up and you get 4GB.

Thank you! I found this info in the maintenance now. And mine also shows 679mb reserved.
