K I use google voice as a secondary line on my phone
It works great for texts and making calls, but when I receive calls is when it gets wonky
I have it set to display my google voice number when someone calls it, and when I pick up all it says is the persons name and then "press 1 to accept or 2 to decline" and then hangs up
Wtf is wrong with it? Its taking away from the point of having google voice if I can't use it

you have call screening turned on.
go to Settings | Calls | Call Screening > set to Off

From the first moment I started the phone and booted up Voice, I've had some small issues. I'm posting here to see if anyone else has had similar issues.
When I was setting up Voice I received a message that the "forwarding number change [was] unsuccessful". I haven't noticed any particular issues resulting from this, but still, it was disconcerting. You can check to see of you have the same issue by going to Settings > Call Settings > Voicemail Settings (if you are using voice) > and then click on your phone number.
The second issue is that the ringtone is stuck as the defualt beeping noise that the phone makes on shutdown... This is when people call me on my voice number. Ringtones for contacts calling my AT&T number are working fine.
I'd love to hear if anyone else is experiencing this, and especially if you found a fix!
Thanks.

Yeah, I forgot about that--I got a voicemail notification 2 hours after the phone call yesterday. An outgoing SMS froze too.

did you go to google.com/voice from a PC and change your settings there? When I first got my Atrix, the Google Voice was set up for my Nexus One and didn't work (even after configuring) on my Atrix. So I had to tell it I had a different phone, it gave me a number with hash symbols (#) to punch in the dialer and hit "call". this then forwarded my number to google voice for use with voicemails. I now have no issues with Google Voice... well, I have one issue. The proximity sensor doesn't turn off the screen when I put the phone up to my ear to listen to a voicemail like it did on my Nexus One.
I ran into the same issue when setting up about the number unsuccessful, but I went into phone options in settings and manually changed the carrier. I havent had any other issues, all notifications are instant and I have a custom ringtone.
Is google voice good what's the point of it

It's amazing! It's the best way to get Visual Voicemail on an Android device and it's free. To be honest if it wasn't for this app, I would have stayed with my iphone as giving up visual voicemail was a no go for me and the other apps on the market for it were not to my liking.
Once you set it, it will alert you when a voicemail comes in and also transcribe it for you. Aside from that you can even have it send an e-mail to you when voicemail comes in, you can also use voice to make calls, send texts, and much more. Best of all, it's free!
@OP: Mine did the same thing, but I haven't had any issues. If you are getting delays in the notifications, load up google voice and go to settings. From settings make sure "synchronize inbox" and "background data" are enabled.
So I got it but it keeps saying forward voice mail unsucsesful any ideas

Thanks--this is the answer. I too came from a Nexus One and I didn't change any of the settings at first. I had to delete my old forwarding number (which requires another forwarding number to be on the profile), and then make a new forwarding number profile (for my Atrix). This fixed my different ringtone issue as well. Took a few tries and wasn't as smooth as I would have liked, but I got it working--I wasn't doing well without my GV!!
Im routing my calls through voice but every once in a while a lady says "this call is now being recorded". I didn't hit anything. It seems random. Any ideas?
gingerbread android 2.3.3 has internet calling feature in built but sipdroid could be alternative
+
google voice account means if you have gmail account u can get local usa number from google.com/voice
+
sipgate gives free local number too but it will not allow u to call so to make out going calls u ll need google voice too = free incoming and outgoing calls
call forwarding
put sipgate number to google voice main call forwarding number ---> then login to sipgate account and get SIP Credentials and fill this info in your android phone ( for android 2.3.3 go to call settings then in last u ll see internet calling option dont forget to select receive calls option turned on or u can setup with sipdroid)
--->download google voice callback from market configure it with your google voice account ..
one more thing left is .....
go to settings --> call settings --> turn on Third-party phone options --> now when u click on call button to call ... google voice callback app will bring up two options ---> select callback option ---> now u ll receive call using your sipgate account which is free bcs its your internet call ...
u can use sipdroid too .. n using that u can make free calls over 3G too ...
now give people your google voice number to receive calls ... and to make outgoing call use callback tool for google voice .. so by that u can make free calls...
enjoy free calling ....
make sure u have your wifi connected or use sipdroid to make free calls over 3G
Thank You
Sounds like a good alternative to UMA (or lack thereof). Only thing I'd be worried about is all the extra menus people calling you have to go through. Or am I wrong about that? Whenever I was using Google Voice people had to say their name to a computer before it would forward the call to my phone.

The great thing about google voice is that you can configure if that menu is presented to your callers or not. It is a setting, call screening I believe, allows Do Not Disturb, blocking numbers unknown or blocked and so many other features.
It replaced my texting plan and saves me money, but I will look into this post for sure.

Thanks for the great info.
I'm trying to set it up now, but I am having trouble with sip gate. Are you sure it gives you free incoming calls? I have not put any money into the account, and when I try to call it it just hangs up. Did you have to put any money into the account? How did you set it up to receive free calls?

I may be crazy, it's been a while since I've used Google Voice for my vvm. but didn't it used to allow you to select it as the default voicemail in the call settings...? I'm trying this on EE03 and I've reflash a few times just to make sure I am not losing my mind, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this now. I'm sure it's something silly since I've not done this since I've had my Hero... Can anyone shed some light on this?
Using google voice voicemail
With google voice you can not use as per say default or select voicemail like an application. I use it everyday. You must forward to your google voice number from your phone. There's some things you might need to check in the google voice settings online to make sure your getting like, forward txt messages to where ever or placed missed calls in inbox, and few other settings you might want to change for yourself.
* activation forward google voicemail
*28(555)555-5555 EXAMPLE This is not your google voice number.
* deactivation is just *38
* PRESSING 4 DURING A CONVERSATION will record your conversation. It will let you and the other party know that you are recording which sucks, but does record great.
Right now I'm getting double messages. I want to just use the Google voice app for messages since it syncs both ways and plays the voicemails.
Also, some people get my old Google voice number (that I still have under a different gmail account) and some get my newly sprint number ported to gv voicemail...

Not sure how to describe it all I have mine set this way:
Ring always:
HTC EVO (Texting on, GV App notifications off so no double txt)
iPod Touch 4 (Via Line 2 #/ Texting on, GV app notifications on)
Google Talk
Ring work hours & weekdays:
My Office phone
Ring Lunch hours
Skype In #
Call Screening on except for my "Most contacted group", Different VoiceMail greetings made for all of my different groups, VoiceMail pin for all devices except the EVO.
My SMS will not receive messages at all. I use in conjunction with google voice, and then I receive them fine, but if I elect to receive via messaging app, I can send SMS's all the time, but nothing will show as received in the SMS app - they will still appear in my google voice though when I check voice online. I am on latest stock version of rom and still nothing works to receive SMS via messaging app. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix it? I tried other SMS apps from the market but they do not receive messages either.
I have tried the short codes to turn Google voice on (*71) but the short code to turn Voice off (*73) doesn't work - just get a prompt stating this short code is not valid. Any help?

*28areacodephonenumber is the Sprint code for conditional call forwarding. *38 is the Sprint code to disconnect conditional call forwarding from Google voice. There is a setting in Google voice to have Google voice texts go to Google voice app or stock texting app. You must sign out of Google voice if you want your phone to go back to normal and/or dial *38 to disengage Google voice for voicemail. If you don't, you won't get your messages and voicemail normally. It's this what you're asking?
I go into Google Voice app and select the option to only receive SMS via the stock messaging app. It saves the option, but then I do not receive any SMS on the stock app - but if I log into my google voice account the messages do arrive there. I've deactivated Google Voice completely, I've uninstalled the app, I've done everything - still can't receive messages on my stock app. I'd read before that there's a short code (*71 and *73) to manually turn on/off Voice, but only the *71 talk works, *73 is disconnected. Need some help!
Those codes don't work for Google voice. The codes you're interested in are *28yourareacodeandphonenumber to activate conditional call forwarding our *38 to deactivate. As far as I know, no other codes, even land line call forwarding codes, work. Have you tried updating your prl and profile? Try sending yourself a text from the stock app to your Sprint number. If you're not receiving it then perhaps you need to call customer service to get the issue straightened out. I suggest the updating first then reboot and see what happens. I set my phone up so that my Sprint number isn't integrated into Google voice. I want to see which number someone is coming in from. I don't know anything about integration, so u couldn't help you there. There might be a setting in the stock app that it's turned off by mistake that is keeping the stock app from working as it should be.
Edit: Maybe customer service needs to reprovision your account. It's basically resetting the account settings to their proper place in case something got fudged up.
