it was announced as officially going to be released to a few devices at some point. there wasn't anything stated as to when it would be released.
aww.. well is there any kind of work-around?
The hell does anyone want netflix on their phone anyway. That's what my xbox is for...you know, the internet connected device that DOESNT have a 5gb data cap?

how would there be a work around if no netflix app has been released to any phone?

There's no HULU app... yet theres a work-around that lets you watch hulu.
It's a question, not a demand asking someone to make a work-around, and also there was a beta going around a few months ago, but a VERY buggy beta. I'm unable to find it.
Nevermind, imageshack sucks.
i tried the ustream work around but the ustream app is ****. now i just use my ipod touch and hotspot my vibrant to it. works great. now what i'm looking for is a throttle fix.
There is no workaround for Netflix on Android. Hulu was relatively easy since 2.2 & higher have adobe flash built-in and Hulu (like the majority of video streaming sites) is flash based. The Android flash player was basically hex edited to fool Hulu into thinking it was a PC and not Android by modifying a text string.

Netflix on the other hand uses Silverlight platform (Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash) which doesn't currently exist for Android. Until Netflix finally releases an app or we get Silverlight on Android there is no way to watch Netflix.
Yeah there is a workaround. Download PlayOn from the Market.

Yep, Playon is the way to go to get Hulu, Netflix and other online content to your phone.
Here is the thing the genius over at netflix are saying we are going to need a dual core processor to have netflix I say that is bull

That IS bull.
I was watching Star Trek from Netflix on my Vibrant tonight using playon, without a hitch.
Give me a link, and I'll tell them what's up.
I wasn't watching trek but I was using netflix through play on. Only problem is you need to be connected to the play on server on computer....still limited though. Netflix isn't on any android devices...not until they figure a proper drm format..no DRM is the only reason it wasn't released when iphone got it.

Once you do the initial WIFI pairing it will continue to work on 3G and other places VIA WIFI. The app syncs to the playon server to get your IP address, if your IP address changes(the one given to you by you ISP) you'll need to re-sync. but I use it out and about all the time on 3G and other peoples WIFI without a problem, just a little slow on the initial startup, but hey it is a beta app.

So I have to stream content from my PC...
WTF is the point?
I'll just watch it on my PC's big screen instead...this really is stupid..If I'm at home why would I watch ANYTHING on my phone's little screen when I can just watch it on my PC or laptop?
I watch sports highlights, Family Guy (Fox.com) etc. on my phone when I'm on the road on 3G..but if I'm home I'm not gonna use my phone when my PC offers a wayyyy better viewing experience.
Playon is a waste of time and money. It would be excellent if it offered Hulu/Netflix WITHOUT having to stream from a PC.
Anyone tried this with good results?
My results:
I use the free "device check disabled" version of the Netflix app, and it operates great on my stock unrooted DroidX. Watched entire movies over 3G with no problems. Works over WiFi too.
Got myself a HDMI cable for the phone to TV (less than $4 incl. shipping, from Amazon)
I've tried using the free "Xternal Display for Droid X" app to send output to an external HDMI monitor.
Works for a couple of minutes, then quits.
I suspect the "Xternal Display" app is getting swapped out by the Android OS, and that kills the TV output.

There's an app in the market called realhdmi that works I haven't tested it on netflix yet but it works great with youtube videos
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I purchased the hdmi app from the market. Afterwards Netflix started right up on my tv. No luck before that. It is somewhat of a pain to use. What you see on your tv is not what you see on your phone. Takes some time to get use to.
This makes the DroidX the smallest Netflix streaming device for a TV?
Sent from my unrooted DroidX using XDA App
I've been using the same app and ut works it just randomly stops working alot and I have to reopen the xternal app. But you could try using the paid app realhdmi, I haven't had any issues with that

sorry, i think iphone 4 and ipod touch 4g are smaller, and officially support tv-out with component, vga, and hdmi (with proper cables/dongles). i wish my droid x officially supported hdmi out for anything useful.

I'm hearing real hdmi doesn't work under Gingerbread yet. Can someone confirm?
Also, under Froyo, has anyone watched an *entire* Netflix movie using real hdmi without any problems?
Sent from an unrooted DroidX using XDA app.
Realhdmi works on gingerbread as of a few weeks ago.
Sent from my DROIDX
Real HDMI will do the job, but because netflix is a mobile app, the picture quality is passable when it is highest, but not watchable if your connection slows and the video quality drops.

If you rent a movie though the market on your Rooted Moto Xoom and try to play it in the Google movies app you will get an error 49 (rooted device not allowed).
But if you go to www.youtube.com in the browser and login you can then play your movie.
I have done this process on my Rooted WIFI Xoom with 3.2. (Desktop UA string). Just thought I would share...
This will only work if you are connected to a network. So if you can tether or if you have a Verizon Xoom you should be good to go mobile. Or you can always use WIFI.
How many movies did you try it with?

one so far I wanted to put it on here so others can try... I will try a few more movies this week.
Yeah nice tip.

Wait- so after logging into you YouTube you jump back into your Google Movies app and it works or.......?
Do you watch the movies on YouTube using the browser?

just tried on my wifi xoom 3.1 with unlocked bootloader using the Bourne ultimatum (favorite movie) and it worked perfectly without a hitch.
this workaround will be useful until someone can figure out how to watch them in the movies app.

hmm... maybe if you did you tube sees the screen size in the browser and limits to 480...
im a newbie, so I apologize for the hand holding but can you please explain exactly how to view a Google video through the YouTube browser? I ordered a movie on Google videos and signed into YouTube, but where do I go from there? Thanks
if you type in"about:debug" (without quotes) in the browsers address bar you will get more settings. go to settings>debug>uastring and change it to desktop. then reload youtube and on the homepage there should be something like "don't forget to watch your movie" and that's it.

so im wondering, how do i get good, hd movies on my SGT10.1? seriously, i dont get it. do i use isyncr or what. i simply want to watch my tv shows, because netflix dont work.
EDIT: i want to use google rentals like on the Xoom but they dont work, correct? any alternatives?
uhh is anyone gonna say anything?
Noones saying anything because there still isn't any logical straight forward approach to what you're asking unfortunately. You just kind of have to take a "whatever works" approach to media with Honeycomb

It's been rumored that rooted devices will not have access to rent/buy movies using Google's new Movie service.
Am I the only one holding back on rooting my device because of this? I tried thinking about it yesterday, and I do not know of any legitimate way to download a movie (legally - paid) and transfer to watch on my Tab. More to the point, I'd rather just rent at $5 than buy at $15.
I've been a rooter since I had a G1 and was always a proponent of rooting, but I don't want to lose what I feel is a key feature of a tablet -- the ability to watch movies.
I know that's not the case as of now .. I have the new market on my Fascinate .. rooted and can download movies and books like a champ. Maybe its something they will fix later . But isn't the case as of now .

My 10.1 is not rooted, and the Google Video app doesn't show up in the market. When I go to the web I can find the app, but my Samsung shows up grayed out and the market claims the device is not compatible with the Video App. I've got it on my Asus Transformer and Acer Iconia tablet though. All three live in the U.S. with me. Anyone have a clue? Maybe a direct download of the video app?
I can confirm that movie playback is indeed prohibited when SU is discovered. I can also confirm that the work around listed previously, er, works.
iTunes it isn't, but it is a legit way of getting media on an Android device. Much better than Samsung's implementation.
I'm one of those odd people who will hack their device on a whim, but won't download illegal media. If I'm going to watch something, I'll rent or buy it.
If Google closes the work around and I have to choose between root and movies, root wins. No contest

Not a big deal for me. Have an SD card+Conector so I can stock up on movies before going anywhere.
My Tab is rooted and running Task's ROM and I rented a movie with no problems. It played on my Tab without mentioning root. When I tried to watch on my rooted Galaxy S2, it said it couldn't play on rooted device. But I found a modified Videos app that worked.
