Hi, I own a Transformer, and I'm quite satisfied about it..
May I just ask you all a question? For the 16GB version, how much Total Space, under Settings -> Storage does your Transformer show?
12.63GB, I believe.
I'd assume it doesn't show the space the OS uses as available. You also have to remember that 16GB of unformatted space works out at 14.89GB. This would mean the OS is only using 2.26GB.
Is any of that space usable for user storage, such as music, ebooks, videos?
How is it partitioned/mounted? /data?
I hadn't though much about this until I read this thread. I bought the 32GB Transformer. And this is what I see under Settings/Storage:
Total Space: 13.18 GB
Applications: 0.96 GB
Downloads: 2.92 MB
Pictures, Videos: 29.38 MB
Audio: 693 MB
Misc: 16.57 MB
Available: 11.49 GB
Seems like I got ripped off and this is the 16GB Transformer, not the 32GB like I paid for.
I'm trying to figure out what the Misc. is, mine is up to nearly 1.2gb.
it sure sounds like you got the 16gb model, I show 27.80gb total available on the 32gb model.

Thanks everyone for the replies.. I've got 12,63gb as total space too..
Trailblazer, I think you really should return it if you paid for the 32 gb ver, it obviously is the 16gb ver..

where did you buy it from TF 32Gb,and get 16Gb?
Mine has 12gb of free space
I got the Transformer from Newegg, but it is not their fault. The box clearly states 32GB. I immediately checked that when I received it. And the Serial number on the box matches what is on the Transformer. The problem is that Newegg wants me to return it and wait a few days after they receive it before they send me another one. The only problem I had with this unit was the Sleep of Death. I used to get it multiple times per day. But since the 3.1 update, the thing has been flawless, so I hate to give it up. But I guess I dont have a choice.

Hi!
Just got myself a A500 (32GB) but my storage only show 12,24 gb available.
When looking in Device Information i see ROM size 16GB.
Does this mean i have the 16gb version ????
The box says 32gb and serials on the device are according to the serials on the box ??
Whay happened to my 32gb ?
Thnx for answers.
Wasn't aware that Acer had released a 32GB Iconia A500 at this time, although the user manual does mention that. If the box says 32GB and the unit says 16, I'd return it quickly.

So, ROM size 16gb really means i have 16gb version ?
And yes, i paid for a 32gb version just as the box says.
Will be calling the store and Acer tomorrow.
Thnx

You paid for a 16 GB version but got a box for a 32 GB version. It's confusing but what do you do. They should have included a 16 GB microSD card with them. I had the same thing happen at Best Buy in the US. they can only refund your money.

Can anyone confirm this? I bought a 32gb Acer Iconia Tab aswell. Romsize says 16bg. I contacted the place where I bought it, and they replied that it is infact 16gb romsize for the 32gb version. 16gb romsize, 16gb of filestorage for 32gb version. 8gb romsize, 8gb for filestorage in the 16gb version.
It's a bit off topic but does anyone know or have an idea or rumor as when 32GB version will be available in US?
I might be wrong, but I don't think "ROM Size" under "Device Information" is the same as your sdcard storage.
Look under Settings -> Storage. Under "Internal Storage", you should see "Total: 12.51GB" if it's a 16GB version. If it's a 32GB version, you should see something in the mid 20's, i'd assume.
I'm not sure how they come up with that, they must be taking some out for factory installed apps. My internal storage as 12.51gb total, and my 16gb external sdcard says 14.97gb. I would have thought they would be the same.
I have 32GB written on Box and also in the device I see 32GB space...

The internal storage has several partitions(divisions in the total space) that allow android to run. I'm not sure on sizes for this tablet, but generally you've got around 2-4GB dedicated to Android. That'd leave you with 12-14GB of space for your personal data. Sort of like a computer with a 1TB hard drive. Even 100% empty, the data structures and rounding off of numbers make them 930GB or so. After you put Windows on it, you've got 915GB free. So a new computer with a 1TB drive would have maybe 900GB free. The drive is 1TB, but to get any use out of the system, you need to use some of the space.
With regards to the issue with 1tb drives mentioned, that's because drive manufacturers call 1000mb a gb but MS correctly calculate it as 1024mb to a gb.
The internal storage quoted includes the Rom but I don't see why the Rom on the 32gb device is twice the size of the Rom in the 16gb device. I have had a ported honeycomb on my desire hd and that only has 1.5gb of storage.
I have the 32GB version, My internal storage shows as 27.02GB

The ROM size, which I'm pretty sure isn't a ROM at all, and is just a partition in the MTD, shouldn't be more than 4GB at most. That'd be more than enough space for android and lots of apps. I know on ClockWorkMod you can repartition the device to use more or less space, but we don't have that as an option at present.
A 32GB tab having 27GB free sounds reasonable. 32,000/1024=31.25 - 4GB = 27.25, add in some extra space used for filesystem structures(ext filesystems by default reserve 5% for the superuser) and it adds up.
I went to bestbuy Canada today

If so, you probably got the 32gb that was supposed to be in the boxes of the people who actually bought 32's. For them, taking it back is recommended. For you, I'd hang on to it, consider it early Christmas.

hahaha...they probably mixed up yours and mine.
But anyways, i got a new A500 with the correct filesize..that is Romsize 32gb.
All the Iconia A500s I've been playing with in stores for the past 2 weeks in Scotland are 32Gb.....and incidently priced at £449
I have a 16GB (A500-1016u) and when I check the storage tab in setting it shows 27.03GB.
Does anyone know why this is or shows the same thing? It made me double check the box to see if maybe I got the 32GB.
I think it's a lucky draw
you got a 32GB version but was in a 16GB box...
or you got a chinese copy version... haha Samsung HDD
anyway enjoy your tablet
Run df on adb. If /mnt/sdcard is 27G then you are so lucky....

i ran df in teminal emulator and it shows 27GB for /mnt/sccard. That's awesome if it is a 32GB version. Has anyone else had a 32GB in a 16GB package? Is it know to happen? I still don't believe it, just think its reporting wrong.
i got 16 in 32gb package!!!!!!!! gimme me yours
32 for 16? Why can't I get that lucky.
I am actually on my second 16 gig A500. The first one had a stress crack across the bottom left corner. I swapped it out at BB for another 16 gig Iconia.
Wouldn't you know it? They were both 16 gig as advertised!
And here you get a 32 gig by accident on the first try. If I were you I would head to Vegas before my luck ran out.
You are not alone. The A500 I bought from my local Target says 16gb everywhere, but internal memory is 32gb. I'm guessing someone accidently mixed some 32gb chips in with the 16gb chips.
U r lucky man!!

I notice that all versions I see are only 16 GB of storage. I am sorry but that is pretty damn weak for a tab. The iPad goes to 64 GB.
I heard that there were 7.7 tabs up to 64 GB but haven even seen a 32 gb version around.
Is this something that is just planned for the distant future or is there a 32 gb and up version out somewhere?
Fom what i have seen, only 16Gb models are in stock for now.
32Gb and 64Gb will be available later on I guess.

Yeah, the iPad goes up to 64GB, BUT, the iPad lacks a micro SD slot, AND since 64GB micro SD cards have already been confirmed working in the 7.7, there's your 64GB version right there!
Now... I wonder how much a 128GB micro SD card would be...
the 7.7 comes in 16, 32 and 64 versions
32 is already available for order from Expensyve... i mean Expansys
i'm waiting for the 64 GB version already own a 64 GB microSD so that'll adds up to 128 GB
and if they release the 128 microSD later this year/next year, then i'll definitely get it too and make this device a 192 GB portable entertainment unit ... and work of course... that's the whole reason we're getting it for anyways for "work" file under business expenses

Don't get me wrong, having 64 GB of internal storage would be nice and all, but honestly, with how much of my media I put on the cloud anyway, having a 64 GB external SD card is plenty good for me.
The way I'm set up now, all my pictures and music are stored in the cloud, and I basically just use my SD card for TV and movies.
But everyone is different!
P.S. Where are you seeing the 7.7 as being available on Expansys? Either the 16 or the 32 GB version. Both the US and the Canadian sites show it as a pre-order only (still!!!)...
P.P.S Nevermind, I see it on the UK site. £599 though?! Ouch... That's like $945 USD!! Good lord...

Yeah everyone is different and handing control of access to my stuff to the "cloud" is a poor option for me. I am not always connected to the net, and don't want to be just to look at a picture or listen to a song/album etc. I also would opt for a wifi only version as I don't want to pay for expensive 3G service. Plus SD access is much quicker than constantly downloading from the "cloud" and battery life is much better without having the modem radio always on . A 32 GB internal option would be nice for me I just hope it doesn't take them forever to release it.

Yeah but I want the internal mostly for apps and external for data (music, video, pictures etc). The thing I know is that "16 GB" is really not 16 GB. After they get done bloating it up with all of the crap they usually put on there you are lucky if you have 10 GB left.
Plus having 32 GB internal doesn't mean that I couldn't add 64 GB SD later when they get reasonable. More is always more and card swapping sucks (but at least you can do it unlike Apple stuff).

True. However, supposedly ICS will bring the ability to install apps to external storage. If this is the case, then that vastly improves what you can install.
For me, the way I currently run my 7.7, I minimize my internal memory usage by keeping my heavyweight media on my external SD (like movies and TV). My internal storage is almost exclusively used for apps and app data. All of my pictures and music are cloud-sourced, so if any of that is actually on my device, it's because it has been stored in the application cache data. By doing this, I still have about 8GB of headroom on my internal storage (out of the 13GB available), which is still plenty enough for me and whatever other apps I decide to install.
More than anything though, I'd rather have the 16GB model as soon as it's available, and then upgrade it with 64GB of external storage, than have to wait weeks, or even months, for the 32 or 64 GB versions.
I agree, more is always better of course, but I just don't have the patience to wait for it. If you do, then my hat goes off to you!

Well it depends on how long it will be before the 32 GB ships out. If it is like 3 months away or something I would probably bite the bullet and get the 16 GB. All I know is that how things usually go is that I buy the 16 GB THEN they announce a week later that the 32 GB is shipping.
Having a 16 GB version at all seems dumb. I mean 32 GB micro SDs are around $30 and they make money selling them. The actual cost difference between 16 and 32 GB internal chip to Sammy (they actually make the flash memory) is what, $5.00? I would think it would cost more just to keep track of and make all of these different ones.

Folks that have the 64gb model are reporting at least 5gb of storage not accounted for and the listing in storage settings does not account for it. The available storage is about 5GB less than the bloatastic Note 5 64gb.
Seems an allocation issue perhaps since nothing else seems to bridge it. The 64GB is technically a 59GB with the storage MIA.

Just to clarify, you're not talking about the space taken up by the OS right? This is in addition to that?
Huh, I think you're right unless I'm looking at it wrong. The 32GB only has 24GB of available space. Should be around 28GB on a basically Pure Android rom I'd think.
You must take into account the os. ~5 gigs sounds about right.

I agree, but in my photo above the 32GB is missing 8GB. I suppose that might not be too far off. I'd think Pure Android would take up about 4-5GB. I don't remember what it took up on the N6...maybe the extra Moto feature take up that much extra space? Who knows. I guess the 3GB isn't that big of a deal. Once we have an AOSP rom hanging around we'll be able to compare.
Edit: looks like the Nexus 6 had about 26GB of available storage. With this only having 24GB I would definitely assume the extra Moto stuff takes up that 2GB of storage.
The 64gb does not even show the 59.6 gb formatted that should be available before the allocation for the stock rom and apps. Something does not add up and based on the convention of storage and using the Note 5 64gb as example, the Pure 64GB is a 59gb device.
This device has 4gb less storage than the Note 5, which is alone telling something is wrong. Motorola has messed something up with allocation. The bad thing is a fix would mean starting from scratch.
Can someone chime in with what the 16 gb version is starting with free?
And I just took this screen shot on my N6 on the m preview. 32 gb version

Nice. That kinda confirms that at least the 32 GB version of the Pure doesn't have any unaccounted for storage since its right at what your N6 has available (can't speak for the 64GB version).

This device has 4gb less storage than the Note 5, which is alone telling something is wrong. Motorola has messed something up with allocation. The bad thing is a fix would mean starting from scratch.

What do you mean by formatted? Post a picture of your storage settings page.

Just for reference, my 64 GB Droid Turbo shows 53.45 GB available. I should receive my 64 GB Pure on Wednesday.

I'm fairly sure this is what is happening:
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=64+GB+to+GiB
Don't confuse GB with GiB. GB is where 1 MB = 1000 kilobytes and GiB is where 1 MB = 1024 kilobytes. Storage manufacturers typically use GB measurements for their storage capacities while some OSes (like Android) will report GiB capacities.
Basically put, there's no missing 5 GBs. Android is reporting the actual GiB size where as Motorola is telling you it's 64 GB size. The two are not equal.
For example, my MXPE:
32 GB storage option was my choice.
Total Space (Settings > Stroage) is: 24.06 GB. Keep in mind this is GiB, not GB. Lollipop stock ROM is roughly 4.5 to 5 GBs roughly. Tack back on 5 GBs, and we get 29.06 GB. This is the actual storage capacity of 32 GBs in GiB.

The thing is Android does not use GiB notation in the backend, so it becomes extra confusing to those who are used to GB notation.

The front end is what the user sees right? Settings>Storage for example, which shows GB. Where would one find where android shows GiB?

Settings > Storage is shown in GIB as far as I can tell. It's just that "GB" is used for GIB. Confused yet?
Simple point is the bloat monster Verizon Note 5 has 4.5gb more available storage out of box. I know users on two other forums that have the 64gb (and ordered when I did) that report the same issue.
Wild how I order a black grippy model with gray with no engraving or greeting and still in build status while others have theirs ordered same day with extra bling. Meh.

I saw users reporting they had about 23.5 GB of usable space on the 32GB Verizon note 5 so that's actually slightly less than the 32GB Pure.
16GB has 9.5GB Available... Got my 32GB Samsung Pro immediately. Better get that Android M as promised asap.

So why does my 64gb device report
53.18GB total size for device
Then my 64GB SanDisk microsd is showing
59.45GB total.
Should these be relatively close and not 5GB? Not that I care, but, if device is displaying in GiB then those values should both be lower. Motorola themselves has to be the ones claiming 64GiB vs 64GB.
I'm not being picking about device being 5GB shy of what it should be. But I'm hoping this can help make sense of it.
