[Q] Pdf not working - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I have tried to open some pdf files downloaded and it is not working out. I have tried reading them out of sd and nook memory and I get can't open file. I tried some other apps for pdf and still had problems. One error message referenced java problems. I have a web site I can go to to view the pdfs on line and I can't view them either. I am using CM7 stable build. HELP!!

Have you tried ezPDF Reader?
It is a paid app, but it works pretty good.
If you look for it on the web, you may be able to find some older version and try it first.
Good luck.

Can't Preview in Gmail

FIXED!!! SEE END OF POST.
Using the latest RC30 mod from JesusFreke, everything works swell (cache to sd card, autorotate, multitouch, etc).
However I can't preview anything but .txt files in gmail! If I try to preview a .doc or .pdf file it crashes (Gmail has stopped unexpectedly) every time.
Not sure what is causing it, I believe it should be calling HTML Viewer and then maybe doesn't find it? I can view things with HTML Viewer though (txt files through ASTRO, etc).
I recently installed Linda File Manager as it adds a plugin to the Browser that enables the downloading of any content, however I've removed this app (and ASTRO) but haven't seen any results. I also reset the "defaults" on pretty much all involved apps.... At the moment I can't view pdfs through gmail and I really need to for work.
Any ideas?
Thanks
hey did you find a fix for this?? im experiencing the same exact thing....
concerning pdfs I had the same experience...
I noticed that my test license of jetcet pdf had expired. I uninstalled, reinstalled...
and it works again.
I am on JF 1.4.1 RC8
I fixed the problem by loading a nandroid backup from the previous day. then i opened gmail and when it asked me what default viewer i would like to use I chose HTML viewer
although it gave me the option of setting ASTRO instead. what i dont get is, why didn't the problem go away after i reset all programs to default and uninstalled ASTRO? mmaybe i should have restarted or something.
im on a stock rc 30 so im guessing id have to get root with one of JFs modded roms before i can do that nandroid? the jetcet program solved the pdf issue but im still force closing when trying to preview docs....html viewer opens independently but not through gmail...really annoying!
i would suggest clearing your defaults for gmail.... also root gives you nandroid yes but yu also need the sdk to flaah the backups. use mybackup as well!
no defaults are set....i guess i have to root to get it to work...
My problem came back! I uninstalled ASTRO, rebooted, and it is still here. No defaults to clear.
Using JF's version of RC33 now.
Also: you don't need root to reset defaults, but if you know how to do it via CLI, tell me! I can't fix it and I am afraid that if I go back to my old backup, update to RC33, it will come back!
getting really frustrated with this...im on a stock rc33 now and i still cant preview docs with html viewer through gmail....i have no idea what to do...i've reset the defaults and nothing?? does anyone have any other possible solutions?
thanks.
Still having the same problem.... I thought it was astro but it wasn't... what do we do?
Yeah, I don't even have Astro installed and it's having this problem. I have Linda File Manager and UnZip installed and that's about all I see that might be interfering...
Not only can I not view PDFs through Gmail, but I can't view any attachments at all.
I hope we find a fix for this...
Hey maybe it's Linda! I did have that installed a while back. I'm gonna do a nandroid backup and the reflash and see what happens.
Well I reflashed (finally got time) and the problem persists--- although I didn't install Linda. Astro is installed, but since you don't have it installed, it must be something else.
Very frustrating; it takes an hour to rebuild my phone (I could just re-flash the backup, but still) and I really want to see this problem resolved.
OKAY I FOUND WHAT CAUSES THE CRASH!!!!
It is an app called download crutch/download crutch lite.
It is a useful app, lets you download files from the browser that it might not recognize (ie zip files).
Anyways uninstall it, then delete the gmail storage/gmail settings from the app uninstaller--- then search for a .doc or .pdf file.
worked for me.
if you DO NOT have this app installed, then I have no idea. This worked for me on a clean install!!!
thanks

How to upgrade Android on rooted NST?

Batting zero so far on responses. Someone has to know this one. What is the Android OS version in Touchnooter 1.6.22? Is there a way of upgrading it without starting from scratch? Want to load Adobe reader, but AM won't even show it. I'm guessing that it has something to do with the OS version on my Nook. Adobe Reader needs at least OS 2.1.
The Nook Touch runs android 2.1.
Even if you can't get to see Adobe reader on the market, you can sideload it, by downloading the file from internet (google "Adobe reader apk"), put it on a SD, using a file manager (astro comes to mind first), choose the downloaded file and install it.
I'd rather use EZpdf on the nook.
I've found EZ too much "crowdy" for the little screen on the NST..looking for a minimalist pdf reader app I've tried apdfviewer that works quite good. Checking out adobe one, I got it crashing for every move on the touchscreen..!

NST - Can't Browse or open non-market apps.

Hi All,
Rooted my nook, market worked on the second day as posted on threads all seems well..
Installed multitouch app thanks to this site, and downloaded ES file explorer from Google Play website straight to my nook in hopes to install the norefresh tool here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1568560
Just 2 issues.
1. When trying to install norefresh tool, I get some message that for security, no non-market apss can be downloaded. I found a thread saying to initiate the process of downloading an Amazon App to find the "secret menu" in order to change this setting.. However, see problem #2 below...
2. No browsers work.
Opera Mini doesn't open, and I tried pushing into my nook from my desktop by re-downloading Opera Mini.. Install looked fine, when I try to open Opera Mini on my NST, I see it start but then it ultimately fails when I try to open.. For the generic browser, it opens, but when I try to search it just brings me back to the Android Homepage.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Did you enable non market apps using "Nook color tools"?
Remember the box is checked when nook color tools comes up.
You need to uncheck it and then recheck the box.
Opera mini does not work for me too. Opera mobile works fine.
Searchmarket is useful to get market search working
Hope this helps

The default browser doesn't bring you back to the android homepage, it just crashes

[Q] Adding browser back to [or fixing] a rooted Nook Simple Touch

Sorry for the total noob question, but here goes. I have rooted my NST, using the following instructions: http://tinymicros.com/wiki/NOOK_Simple_Touch_%28NST%29_Rooting_For_Practiscore Forgive the external link, I just wanted to be clear on where I am at.
If this isn't acceptable, apparently the source of the info is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346748 and I used the "the 'Normal + Xorzone's mods + adb Wifi' build "
Practiscore works flawlessly and my nook does what I need it to do. Now I have been thinking that it would be cool to be able to surf the web or at least be able to use the internet over wifi to load apps without having to load it on the SD card manually.
Right now, when I open the browser, it will actually open www.google.com when I set it to the home page but then crash whenever I try to do anything - even just clicking on the search box. The fact that it will actually open google, tells me my connection is working, but either the root process broke the browser, or something else is wrong. I can also open the market and get it to show me some apps, but it won't let me search or surf to any app. Searching just hangs and displays nothing.
I've tried searching but I haven't had any luck in picking the proper search terms to get an answer, and for some reason there is a script running wild on this page that refreshes it every 2 seconds interrupting what I am doing. That problem is probably on my PC, but firefox is what I have.
Ok, I got some things to install by d/l'ing the APK's directly to the SD card on a PC. I still haven't gotten the app store to work, or google.
The app store search will not work on your nook touch, the only way to install apps are either sideloading them or installing them wirelessly using google play on your computer.
You may want to use Opera Mobile instead of the basic browser, it would be easier than getting the stock one working.

Ok, this thing is just not working, everything I try in the market or using the browser just crashes. I downloaded the opera mini, but I didn't get an apk, so I have no idea how to install the extracted files. Most of the apk's I have found to put on here don't work either and just crash. I cant even get hangman or a crossword to load for pete's sake...
Did you root it to run Practiscore on?
If not, I'd suggest restoring your backup, upgrading to 1.2.1 firmware, then using NookManager with NTGAppsAttack (see the Nook Touch Android Development Forum here on xda). That worked just fine for me. But I don't need to run Practiscore.

Yes, the link in the OP was what I used.
1. NTGAppsAttack - working google play
2. use SeachMarket.apk to look for APK's in Google play.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38323047&postcount=6
3. Use Opera Mobile instead of Mini.
4. To manually install .apk (without using ADB)
- put it on your uSD.
- open it using Relaunch or any other file browser that you use.

You sir are a genius. The searchmarket and Opera mobile WORK!!
Now all I have to figure out is how to get rid of those extra apps [that suck and don't work]
Oh and maybe a pdf reader that works...
..and is the screen supposed to go all wonky for a second whenever I do anything? Or is there a new video driver?

FBReader PDF and DJVU Plugins for NST

I am a big fan of FBReader, so I'm hoping I can get the PDF and DJVU plugins to work. Right now I have the optimized version of FBReader for the Simple Touch (based on 2.6.15) but when I try to sideload the PDF and DJVU plugin apk files I get a "Parse Error." The versions that I have are the earliest I could find. I think the PDF plugin version is 1.0.2, which should work with Android 2.1. but still no luck.
Has anyone been able to install these plugins? Do I need to do an ADB install instead of a sideload? Not sure if that would make any difference.
Thanks
