are you serious? so this is like christmas for developers now right. Creating roms probably got easier as well.
So i guess HTC knows people hack their phones and don't really care it seems like. no argument here. Banana IPHONE!

Take this to General!!!!
its not development material, only news!

i think its both general and development forum worthy.
this is big big news.

This is great news, Gotta love hTC

I think the title of this thread may be incorrect. I could find nothing on that site that says, or even implies, that sense is going to be open source. Looks to me like they are just making a sight with developer tools to help create apps that better make use of, or integrate better, with built in features in the Sense UI.

That's what it looks like too me as well. They'll be providing an SDK, not the sense source code, as far as can see.

WOAH, WHAT?!?!!?!! Sweet! What exactly is going to be included in the OpenSense SDK? Sense UI's source code or just a dev kit?
The HTC OpenSense SDK framework provides APIs, sample code and plug-ins for HTC Sense, 3D displays and tablet pens.

No Sense source code. Just an SDK to make Sense apps.
They completely missed the golden opportunity with the CommonSense SDK, IMHO.

just got to say, with the unlocked BLs, the SDK, ect, all the cool shizzle that HTC is doing lately, I am fully prepared for, and not at all pissed that, most likely the GB update will still be Sense1. they've earned my respect.

I am so excited, there are going to be some slick new ROM's coming out in the near future.. and new Sense mods!

lol @ the clownery in this thread... "THIS IS BIG BIG NEWS"
Will still be good nonetheless

You shouldn't post things you have no idea about. Sense is not going Open Source. Did you even read the article? Do you even know what Open Source means?
Note: This comment is based on the threads misleading title, currently: "Holy...SENSE IS GOING OPEN SOURCE ALL DEVS READ"

This is exactly what I said would happen.
Sense = HTC's own platform, they don't want to see it as HTC Android phones. Now they want exclusive apps for Sense, next step is a HTC Sense app store. I will be stoned for this, but can anyone say Android fragmentation?

No chance sense is going open source, award tour hit the nail on the head. I actually believe htc will launch their own sense app store only on sense roms. Might not happen for a while but I can see it now.....fragmentation at its finest.

I don't know if it will end up being that bad. I think it will be more like it is now with the carrier specific tab when you open the market. If you have a Sense phone you will have a Sense tab at the top with apps and widgets specifically developed for that framework.

Very cool news indeed!

[Journal] My Road to Becoming a Great Developer

My Road to Becoming a Great Developer
Intro
Hello I am Kifno. I have had my HTC Hero CDMA for a short period of time and I've fallen in love with it and everything about it. I love testing out other developer's apps, tweaks, mods, themes, roms, kernels, etc. I also have recently gotten into the modding and tweaking aspect of our hero's too. Some of you may know me from my tweaked build.prop's. But I have decided that I want to be known as a great developer for the HTC Hero CDMA. I am going to keep this thread as a journal during my journey to becoming a great developer, posting what I have learned, accomplished, created, modded, tweaked, etc. that is making me one step closer to reaching that goal. Hopefully during my journey you all will appreciate some of my work for our HTC hero CDMA devices.

I'm new to becoming a developer. My first piece of work is simple, editing the build.prop from other developer's roms. And I'm learning how to program and learn the c language and learning java so I can do bigger and better things for the HTC Hero CDMA. And as a matter of fact not only did I make a editing build.prop for aosp but aosp as of last 2 updates to his new gingerbread rom has implemented my editing build.prop into his gingerbread rom by default so I'm pretty sure aosp know's i'm editing the build.prop to make the hero better for the community. That is why aosp is keeping it implemented into his rom by default. Please be positive here I'm on a journey to become a great dev and all great dev's started small okay. Remember I'm NEW to becoming a dev.

No need to be negative guys. At least he's going out and working for it. That's a lot more than 90% of people here can say. Most are too lazy to learn and want others to do it for them. Really can't believe that on xda we have at least two guys who who would actually try and discourage someone from developing. I think you guys need to check yourselves. Pathetic.
To kifno, goodluck friend and best wishes! I can't wait to see what you do!

And he isn't taking claim of anyones rom he is editing the build.prop giving people some extra tweaks to make our phones quicker.. Kudos on your hard work kifno and there are some big shoes to fill around here and someone needs to do it.. I plan on trying but its hard to make time with life right now for me, so thank you for giving it a shot..

We aren't trying to be negative. Our point is that you haven't developed anything in reality. Just editing a properties in a file isn't developing, but it does take some knowledge to know what you are going to edit . Nonetheless, you are trying to become the greatest developer, but really you are in the 1st chapter of your C Programming book. It's going to take you maybe another 3 - 5 books to actually understand what's happening. Instead of striving to become the "Greatest" developer, why not focus on just becoming a developer at first

I would LOVE to try out HoneyComb on the Nexus S
I have posted here because it is development based, it isnt general information about the Nexus S, however i realised the title was misleading and have changed it! I hope this gets a lot of devs attention and someone much more able than myself manages to build a ROM!
I agree, I'd love to see it soon.
i would definitely give this an install if it gets ported
+1, I would love a honeycomb port as well.
I think the first step to get it to boot would be to make a boot.img with the ramdisk and kernel provided in the sdk..
Sent from my Nexus S
Yeah, I'd love to see this port also, Honeycomb seems really cool from the videos I've seen for far, it'd be awesome to have it running on my Nexus S
Iv also heard its been ported to the EVO 4G, really hopped MODs would have left this in the DEV section so it actually got noticed by the people with the ability to do something about it!
They should have left this in the developer section
Do none of the developers read the general section at all?

You're probably right. Dollars to donuts one of our amazing devs will cook up a honeycomb ROM soon.
I don't see the point in HC on phones, if its aimed at Tablets with its UI interfaces and large Graphics, whats the point in having those OSK Arrows e.c.t
The only cool thing in HC is those animated backgrounds, apart from that thats it really.
I'd Rather see 2.3.3 running so we can mess about with NFC's and such, or 2.4 in late march.

Requesting a dev to work on something without a payout is like going to a mechanic and saying, "yeah I want my car to have 800HP, but I am not paying you for it. just do it. "
If you are wanting this done fast, get about 2 grand into a paypal and be ready to drop it for someone to work. These people do this stuff for free! Stop demanding!
When something is available then it will be posted. If you arent willing to work on it yourself, stop posting. The devs know what the community wants, they are not retarded. I really wish these posts would stop popping up.

Not that I entirely disagree people shouldn't ask to much of devs, but that statement doesn't work
a mechanic would do work on your car, and it would only be your car. A dev makes something once and everyone can use it. Surely you see a difference?
If you went to a mechanic and asked him to figure out how to make all of a certain model of car have 800HP, and he had the same model car, its a but of a different situation.
That said, whatever devs dev I'm happy with, just felt the need to point out the mechanic analogy doesn't suit this.

Why don't you become a dev and prove you can do it better.... talk is cheap my friend...... imo our devs are awesome and we have tons of roms and themes..... and we have some great kernels..... we may not be as great as some other communities but we're a hell of alot better than at least 75% of the other communities......
Of course blame the devs who do this **** for free. That will obviously motivate them to keep creating roms.

Calm down, we don't have cm7 because our devs don't want to have to reinvent the wheel when 2.3 kernel source is coming soon.
Everything they are doing is guess and check, they are deving blind. With the kernel source to gingerbread they will have less work.
Why does the hero have CM7? Why does the motorola defy have CM7?
Because the dev's there know that gingerbread source will never happen for their phones, so they got to work and boy they had a lot of work. However, with the giant userbase those phones had they could spread out the work amongst a large base of dev's to finish it.
For us, We don't have as many devs, so such a task would be a huge undertaking for our devs. This may be a task our devs will have to face with Ice Cream Sandwich but with Gingerbread, Samsung has the potential to do 60% of the work for us by releasing the gingerbread kernel source.
So, Why make the effort when you don't have to?

This is are hobbie not are job. Source is to needed to simplify things. Gb on the hero is a highly modified eclair kernel. Cause of this not all the gingerbread features/enactments work on the hero. I know this cause my spare hero is running gingerbread. In my honest opinion the hero runs better on eclair.
so ask your self this one question. You want a fully functional gingerbread experience or a hacked up one?

HTC sense 4.0 on galaxy s 2

Hi guys!
First let me say that i'm not whining but rather thinking at high voice and sharing my thoughts!
I seriously don't understand why people at SGS2 forums don't work on porting HTC sense 4.0 on this beast!
And please don't say "do it yourself" because if i knew how to do it i would have done it but i'm a civil engineer and have nothing in developing.
Imagine one of the best hardware with the best software!!!
I know sense has flaws but it's way better than Touchwiz or AOSP / AOKP / CM9 etc...
As i dare to ask that question I know you might say "hey what are you doing here then?! Go buy an HTC etc..." and will probably flame me!
But really i am very afraid of buying a HTC one X or One S coz i've been hearing and reading about the hardware flaws : signal losses, battery issues, screen issues, coating issues, sound issues etc...
The old good HTC is, unfortunately i say, gone! The good hardware build and quality of HTC desire or HD2 is gone! They are making a lot of mistakes in terms of hardware design!
Bottom line, can you try port HTC sense 4.0/ICS to our beloved S2?!?
And please don't tell me it can't be done because it is now being ported to Samsung nexus S and Samsung galaxy nexus!
If many agrees with me we can even start a bounty!
Thanks,
This is just a repeat of similar posts lasting nearly a year now . Seems either no interest or Devs are finding problems . Thats also a similar reply to last weeks .
Guess a big bounty may kick start it post me ten K and i will start .

Yeah but these guys are left alone and no experienced developers / coders are helping in the project! That's why the project is in Coma right now!
You try hacking closed source software to work on proprietary hardware that the software was never designed for... We then can talk about "Getting sense on this beast". The day I see sense on my SGS2 (Or SGS3, or SGS4) is the day I do the zulu dance buck naked in winter.

Doubt it'll happen, cos general consensus is to do away with custom interfaces completely and even if given a choice most will have touchwiz which is less intrusive, than sense.
ports for galaxy nexus and nexus s are still very pre-alpha they barely boot and nothing usable about them. in my opinion this port will never happen and if it happened it will not be ready for daily use.

Bottom line, can you try port HTC sense 4.0/ICS to our beloved S2?!?
And please don't tell me it can't be done because it is now being ported to Samsung nexus S and Samsung galaxy nexus!
If many agrees with me we can even start a bounty!
Thanks,

let me tell you why developers are not doing that............. its ******* impossible as our eyxnos chip does not support sense for that we need to recode/ remake the whole ui!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you see!! wait until htc releases an eyxnos featured phone...................
Shen has already done it for sense 3.5 so its not impossible... he just needs to figure out all the niggles and whatnots.

thanks for raising this issue again !!
I have already posted a thread about the developers not being "actively" interesting in porting HTC sense UI to our beloved SGS II.
( For your interest : Just search SGS I and Nexus S forms and see what Qube2 and Swamp globin are doing )
Non of them even replied about what exact difficulties they might have !!
It's not " just a UI " it's UI with the best implementation of twitter, facebook, weather, email ,,,, etc.
Probably your post will be moved to Q/A subform where you will never get any chance that real developers would see it.
Again thanks for bringing this up again

I had galaxy s and htc sense port was great but s2 nah not supported by sense. There is only one hope that of htc releases a exyenos powered phone and sense ui will.be easily ported even if it is 4.0. I personally love sense ui if want sense theme and awsome stocks launchers check out this.
