Low mic volume? - Epic 4G General

So I am sitting here trying to talk to family from my Epic to their landline. They can barely hear me. I have been getting reports lately more and more of people saying they cannot hear me.
So I grab my wifes stock epic and call them back. They state it is soooo much better that they can hear me now. I call back from mine and same exact low volume to them. I can hear them fine though.
I have Bonsai on my phone. I haven't tried flashing back to stock yet to see if that fixes it but I highly doubt it will. Is there any hidden setting to make my voice louder?
I am guessing I will go to the store and use my insurance to swap my phone.
Anyone else heard of this issue with the epic?

Odin back too stock and try it. If its better flash srf 1.1.1 with ee03 modem. Try that.

Or might just be a bug with your phone. Obviously if stock odin doesn't fix. Time too take it too sprint

I also had this problem with using sfr. I think that it had somthing to do with voodoo sound. Went back to stock with odin and reflashed sfr. I also changed some settings in the voodoo sound control app. Something that I did made it so that people can hear me without me yelling into the mic.

Ever since I moved to EE03, my mic has gone to crap when using the speaker. Same issue as in OP, very low volume and folks on the other end complain they can barely here me. Doesn't occur when I toggle the speaker off.

Clear Voodoo Control's data and don't mess with any settings except the ones in the first section. I had the same problem and doing this fixed it. Report back.
I'm pretty sure that its when you change the default setting in the Recording Presets menu but I'm not really sure. I don't really have any use for using my phone as a recorder so I just leave them alone anyways.

DUDE! check the mic hole and clean it
no lie it worked on mine

Change the Recording Preset in Voodoo Sound to Original. That should get you the same "volume" that others hear you at when using your wife's stock Epic.

Never thought about the mic hole. Will try that first..something so simple. I remember when I got my TP2 I forgot the sticker over the mic hole.

Mic hole was clean. Odin to latest stock. Mic volume is back! Woot! I don't have to go to the sprint store. It was the Bonsai Rom causing the issue.

Were you using a voodoo sound kernel?

ee03
Hey guys personally i think its a bug with ee03. Ive tried the swiss cheese, ive tried marcusants both v5 and v6 and midnightroms ee03 rom. I started a thread in q&a with almost 100 people who saw it and 1 who commented. It has nothing to do with cleaning the mic or buying a new headset.(although bluetooth solved the problem for me, but i prefer my wired headset...)I was using the stock wired samsung headset that came with the phone. All my phone calls had a low mic volume. I odined back to ec05 and my mic volume went back to normal. The only time ive noticed the problem was when i was using ee03. If some devs could look into it, im sure alot of us would be grateful. I now know im not alone with that problem. Also ee03 doesnt come with voodoo sound. So there is nothing to adjust, as there is no voodoo sound...However as much as i miss the smooth transitions and battery life of ee03. i had to go back to ec05 and for those of you who odined back down, well you know what i mean when i say i miss ee03. But the biggest problem is one that cant be overlooked.....MIC VOLUME....

Bonsai has voodoo built in, all you gotta do is get the voodoo app from the market and change the recording preset back to normal.

Just thought I would let everyone know ef02 doesn't have the low mic volume issue and I also found and app in the market for gingerbread devices that really helps with audio volume. Besides using voodoo control plus you can also use volume+. I use both......

System volume hack or work around???

Anyone know of a hack or workaround for the piss poor volume on eb13? The alarm barely woke me up this morning.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
They lowered the volume intentionally. Some of the test phone's during beta were blowing speakers out. It has been known to happen on di18 also.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Wow really? The volume is extremely loud. They increased it a lot since DI18. It almost blows my speaker all the time.

They tweaked the internal EQ. Some frequencies are louder, some are lower. It depends on what your listening to. I had to swap out one of my Epics that was running a dk28 rom because it blew a speaker. One of the reps in our Sprint store has gone through 2 Epics because of the blown speaker but they were both refurbs and running di18 stock.

I feel like mine was overall quieter too. Or at least in most areas. If you go to the midnight rom thread, to pftmedic's website, and to the android developement page, youll find a CWM3 flashable zip called ViperRoms volume hack. It was for dk28, but its still compatible, because there wasnt really any code in it. Just numbers to set the volume. It worked for me.
Just the notification sound is quieter in EB13. It was also present in DK28. In DI18, it was about 15% louder than EB13 and DK28.

+1 on this.
Mine seemed quieter as well. The Viper Vloume Hack that pftmedic "edified" works great! Also, I have flashed quite a few of the other edify zips from his website and they (all the ones I have flashed so far) all work great with EB13!
So let me see if I can sum this up and let me know if you think I am right or wrong.
Samsung decided in its infinite wisdom to use substandard speakers in some of the build runs either to save money or because they couldn't obtain speakers from their original source. Due to this manufacturing decision they had to turn what was a pretty decent sounding phone (my phone) in to a POS with the latest software update in an effort to protect themselves from excessive warranty claims.
/rant
Overall volume is fine for me, I just wish that we could increase the notification volume sound!
Thanks for the input guys, ill try the hack you guys are talking about. Mine and my wifes alarms are about half as loud as they were before the update. Ringtones are still loud as hell though. I'm just glad I sleep light or I would have been a couple hours late this morning lol. Thanks again guys.

I have issues with the volume in EB13 for the external speaker, it seems much quieter.
The VIPERmods_GalaxySVolHack_v3.zip referenced earlier (ptfmedic's lostandtired<dot>com/android-development site for the midNIGHT ROM) in this post is replacing the EB13 files with ones packaged in the zip as shown below.

How to fix the sound quality for your in Mic for phone calls.

I was having problems with my mic on my Samsung Epic. Make sure you have a back up of your best working ROM in clockwork or I guess make a backup. What I did to fix it was wiped my partition and davilk cache. Then I did a format system wipe in clockwork 3.0.0.6. Afterward I restore my best backup from clockwork and Blam problem solved now my friend here me pretty clearly.
P.S. My Rom came with voodoo so what I did in voodoo was to set the mic preset setting to original.
I hope this helps somebody out. Maybe things to out of wack because I kept on reflashing my phone everyday. Now I am happy with my cell phone. I am on the Midnight Rom Version 5.2 Standard no Journaling.
IMO every ROM out there works a bit differently for everyone so it might end up being something youll have to find out yourself.
inb4 everyone gives there opinion on which ROM they prefer
I've never noticed a difference with any if them in call quality. Who makes phone calls on a cell phone anyways? Lol

I guess a couple of people including me had their friends tell them that they can barely hear them.
I was having this problem for several days as well and I couldn't figure it out. But apparently last night, it fixed itself. I have ACS rom right now.
Think it had more to do with sprint......maybe.
I was recording with my phone and the mic sounded hwavily distorted with voodoo's default settings. I fixed it by setting mic input to original.

Crackling noise when I touch the screen

I've been having this issue with my epic for the past month or so. If something (other than a phone call) is playing audio (game, music) through the speaker or the earbuds I hear a crackling noise when I touch the screen and only when I touch the screen. It's very easily reproduced too. For example, I'll have pandora playing through the speaker and it'll play fine until I touch the screen to change the song or do something else. If I keep my finger on the screen it'll continue making the crackling noise until I lift it off. Doesn't happen if I touch the screen while it's off. The same thing has happened on every rom I tried including odin to stock eb13 and ec05. Since I've had the phone for less than a year, can I take it to a sprint store and get a replacement? Or does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
This may not make the most sense, but it sounds like you've got some exposed wires or something on the inside, my guess would be that the capacitive touch screen is causing some feed back when the field is broken and you touch it. May be a bad capacitor, or just some crossed/exposed wire, but we have had a similar issue with a wall touchpad in one of our class rooms. they control a Audio visual box and once it was damaged would produce a crackling over the speaker system when you would use the touch pad to change source or adjust volume and the AV box was turned on. The unit had to be replaced, I'd be willing to bet the same would go for the phone as replacement parts wouldn't be the easiest to come by.

We were trying to track down the cause, but never did, we still think it might be vodoo sound related when its built into the kernel...
But if it happens on stock, it could be something else, only happens to me on modded kernels.
If you can see this link please take a few moments to click and read, its for a good cause, you can make a difference, help spread the word today...
http://www.picketfenceblogs.com/vote/3616
I've never expiernced this either
Not sure what to say if it happens on stock. Proud to say i've never ran stock except for the 2 minutes before I flashed a custom ROM. And yeah I mentioned the ROM because it does have a custom kernel and even though we've all heard arguments that it's this or that i still have to say it's gotta be something in how voodoo is compiled into the kernel like ecooce says.
So I odin back to DI18 and let it update before I took it to the store and of course it's not happening anymore
I remember going back to stock after ACS 1.1 destroyed my phone a few times (my phone would freeze a lot and since there's no journaling in 1.1 everything would get corrupt) and I still had the issue. Playing air attack hd with the crackling was horrendous. Anyway, thanks for the support everyone. Sorry for the scare

Kernel bug. Likely not a hardware issue.
I have the same exact behavior with Genocide 1.0. I'm unaware if this occurs in other Voodoo sound enabled Kernels but it sounds like it does.
On stock EC05 the problem goes away. For me anyways.
It does for most. TWZ 1.4 doesnt have the problem and neither does Bonsai 4.1.1 kernel AFAIK. There might be other known good combos.

I have the same issue on certain kernels. I was just about to ask, too. VERY noticeable when I'm playing music in my car and need to do something onscreen, makes the audio sound terrible.
I had this issue on several roms, including acs and the previous bonsai. In fact, my experience with acs was identical to yours. My phone just didn't play well with it. I don't have this problem with stock plus rom, even with the genocide kernel. Give that one a shot.

Mine also crackles when the brightness adjusts. This includes when the screen fades out when I turn it off.
I hadn't noticed it when simply touching the screen though, just with the brightness. Also, I never noticed it until I started running custom roms with voodoo built in.

[fix] more volume for CM7 (updated for 1.3/1.4)

I believe based on a few testers' results that I have fixed this at a kernel level. I had tried this kernel fix originally back when this first happened but I didn't boost the values high enough to make a difference in testing, so thanks to tiamat for more precise values. I have tweaked the values to be louder than my previous kernel, you might notice a slight crackle and likely need to turn down one slot at the highest setting now if you never had volume issues, the highest slots are for people that seem to have more serious volume issues. If this works for people I'll get it merged into the cm mecha msm7x30 kernel.
If this works or doesn't work, PLEASE post specifically and accurately, this can only get better if I get feedback. Please also read the OP fully, there are a lot of questions being asked towards the back pages of this thread that could easily be answered with 2 seconds of reading. As always, you can find me in #slayher on freenode if you want to give more specific feedback or scenarios.

Right now this is a temporary workaround until something more elegant can get merged into the source but I need to spend more time with it. The test users I gave this out to reported better volume in: backspeaker, earpiece and headphone jack. Since this has worked with a few people I'm going to post it here and see how it works for others. I don't personally have low audio on CM7 so testing of this was done by a few affected users so thanks to those who tested it, especially syco; and also slayher and jcase as well.

1) CM7 rc0.4 is required (this post will be updated if new versions come out)

Thanks for the feedback guys, it is helpful and greatly appreciated. A few users have told me that the volume in-call still wasn't loud enough, so I cooked up a 'this goes to 11' version. Users should ONLY flash this if their headset isn't loud enough with the normal version and this should be considered very experimental. I am putting this out there due to demand but you should turn down your volume before flashing this second hack should you need it. You have been warned

This worked great for me too. However, my screen lock sounds are now virtually non-existant. I can barely hear them and tried looking through other settings to try and make them louder, but can't seem to. I guess it fixed one problem and broke another.

Is audio manager something available in the market? I am on gengeritis but would love to have something to boost my volume, specifically on speaker phone. It kills me to not be able to use it while in the car. If I can get much louder volume with this I might just have to wipe and flash CM7.
For some reason my in call audio only seems slightly louder. Everything else is definitely louder though. Is there something you can tweak to make in call volume louder?

Extremely low in call volume. Files to edit?

I've been running OmniRom with PA full modular gapps for a while. Currently on 03/05 nightly w/Franco 203.
I use Viper4Android to adjust my headphones and speaker levels.
I have been having extremely low in call volume since 4.4 and I can't figure out why. No one seems to have an issue. I've played with adjustments in Franco's app as well as settings in Viper but it doesn't help. My music sounds great though and voice calls put on speaker are very loud and clear. It's just the handset speaker that's really low.
Previously on my Sensation, I could make edits TPA2051_CFG_XC.csv that would help. And in the Nexus 5 forums I see you can edit mixer_paths.xml to help as well but when I look at the Nexus 4's mixer_path, there isn't a line to adjust handset volume.
Is there a file I could edit to adjust my in call volume? Or any other way to fix this?
Edit: Forgot to include, I use hybrid radio 33-98 for LTE. I've tried other regular and hybrid radios as well and that hasn't helped.
I wonder how helpful this would be for you, but I faced problems with in-call earpiece volume. I had to connect my headphones, call a number, maximize the volume, remove headphones and re-test the volume without headphones. Apparently, I had noticed that it mixed settings of both the profiles - with headphones & without headphones.

Just tried it a few times. No go for me. Volumes for with and w/out headphones are at max. I tried lowering one and the other. Or raising them at different intervals. Still didn't help.
Thanks for trying though.
I actually have the same problem right now. I tired using a flash able zip. Which I have no idea where it is now but all it did was completely disable touch for me. I never tried ViperX but I'll keep snooping around and see what works for me and let you know

Nope. Sorry. I don't think many people are having issues. It might be hardware related but I haven't done a full format to test anything new out.
I update to the newest nightly like once a month and I don't make very many calls so it hasn't been detrimental to me yet.
I haven't seen anyone bring it up in the Omni thread though so I'm certain either a clean start should do the trick or it's hardware related and you'll need an RMA.
Hope you find a resolution for your issue! I'll definitely post something here if I ever figure it out on my end.
Same issue here. Occasionally I've fixed it between kernel or Rom flashing, but never found out what I did to fix and when I'd flash again it would go back to bad quality again. Sometimes I have to stick a finger in one ear and press the phone hard into the other ear to hear anybody

Yeah, mine worked well again for a day. The next time I restarted, it was crap again, and I have no clue what I did differently...

Guys, I'm on an s3, but someone posted a file in the neatrom 4.3 thread that works. Not sure if it'll work for everyone but thought I'd let you know that a fix is out there (can't copy the link coz I'm on tapatalk)

I'm a bit hesitant to flash something for the S3 onto the N4. Plus, the file in that zip you're referring to isn't one that's contained on the N4 in that directory.
Thanks for noting, though. Maybe I'll backup and try it to see.
