so i am trying to fix this for a friend. her stock sms app force closes every time you open it. i have cleared the cache and data. no different. i have read that factory resets may fix the problem but they dont give what is causing the problem. which is not a valid argument to factory reset if they are just guessing. its completely stock. no root. any help would be awesome.
I've been having it happen too. Just hold down the power button and selecting restart works. Shutting off the phone once a day is good too

restarting the phone does not work in this case. i have tried a few times.
my wife's MT4G has started to show similar symptoms recently. random force closes, and she will have to reboot to get it to work, but once she reboots all of her messages are gone and smsbackup is not backing it up. Her phone is completely stock no root and never has been. (she won't let me touch it ) lol

My wife is the same way and her phone was buggy too...she got the update a week or two ago and so far so good....
the best thing to do is a factory data reset,as to why its force closing, it could be a simple bug or something went wrong on installing android on the phone. if it continues to keep happening go to t mobile an have them replace it,under warranty. the other option is to root an flash the new 2.3 update for the phone.

It seems to happen after the phone has been on for an extended amount of time. I don't have lag, and I'm not using the gps when it happens. In fact, it usually happens when I sleep. Has anyone else experienced this? My phone is not modified. I'm even running plain touch whiz. I'm considering returning if I can't resolve with a hard reset. No third party apps are running when this occurs. I routinely close processes before I stop using the phone. I love this phone, I'm just worried I have a bad unit.
i'm having a similar issue, but with a rooted vibrant. the problem has spanned across two different handsets. the first one i rooted almost out of the box. but after a few days it started locking up after sitting for a while and i would have to pull the battery to get it to come back on. so i returned it, got a new one and held off rooting it to see if this one would do the same thing. the non rooted one had no problems at all, so i bit the bullet and rooted this one too, and sure enough later that same day it started doing the same freezes when trying to unlock it.
as soon as i rooted the second phone i downloaded rom manager and made a nandroid backup. after the backup i proceeded to remove some of the bloat, like dual clock, the startup/shutdown sounds, and some of the other crap that the vibrant comes with. i also installed and started up setcpu. it seemed that after i did all of this is when the freezes started up again. so i did a restore to before i removed all that stuff and now the phone is fine again. what is it about my process that is making this phone lock up like this?
EDIT: nevermind...i found some other people with the same problem in a setcpu thread...seems setting the sleep profile too low will cause the phone to not wake up after sitting too long
Uh, I'm not getting any freezing, but I know there is an issue with SetCPU. A certain setting will causes problems on the Vibrant. My issue is just unexpected reboots after the phone has been on for approximately 170 hours.
I had many random restarts and general craziness from my non rooted stock vibrant. A factory restore fixed all problems.

Yeah, if it happens again I'm going to try a factory reset.

Ok I have noticed that my vibrant is randomly reboot more than usual. I can be on the web or checking email she'll just bog down and restart with no warning. Is anyone else experiencing this issue.
I have my phone rooted running launcher pro and theres one more thing I'm noticing more of the apps are not responding and force quiting are you guys have the issue as well

I have same thing but untouched vibrant. No root.
It has re-booted three times already since i got it (i.e. last two weeks)
The reason it is re-booting is because kernel is crashing. The reason is still unknown.
It could be GPS driver crashing the kernel or faulty hardware.
Best options is to replace the phone or wait for Froyo and hope this problem goes away.
My wife has a completely stock Droid X and she always has the weirdest issues with her phone with it locking up, freezing or hanging up..
Sometimes the phone recovers, other times it needs to be rebooted manually.
Is this a known issue with this phone?? I have the HTC incredible and have no issues like this.
I havent had a problem or heard of this. Is she under warranty and get it swapped out? If not has she tried to do a wipe/factory reset? While off hold the power and menu key at the same time. A screen will come up. press the search button. Use the volume keys to scroll up and down. Go to wipe/factory reset and press the camera button.
My wife has a stock D2, and it sometimes likes to open up the voice search, or she will be typing a text message, and the g key will open the browser to google.com, or just randomly freeze up..... Maybe women have a different body chemistry that acts like a mini EMP that just destroys all electronics.... Everything electronic she has ever owned has major problems, yet mine last years........
Droid X freezing - having to battery pull.
I've been having similar issues with my Droid X. It will randomly, and often, lock up for a while, then come back to life usually. It's really annoying if your browsing the web and all the sudden the phone freezes for 20-30 seconds.
When it freezes completely, it will just freeze and the screen will remain on. I have to then pull off my protective cover and battery pull to reboot.
Battery pulls happen about once every 2-3 days. Freezes that recover are happening 5 or 6 times a day if not more.
The brief time I had the phone on stock, the issue was occuring. I ignored it and figured surely this won't happen after I root it. I'm now running latest Liberty ROM and it's still happening. Problem definately gets worse if I overclock. I'm wondering if the CPU can't even handle 1000 Mhz and needs to be underclocked just so this thing can run stable.
I'm going to test that out and see if the weird freezing and force closes go away. But it will suck loosing speed.
I unfortunately can't return my phone as I bought it used on Craigslist.

Its likely due to the fact that the stock Droid x firmware sucks a load of ass. The factory blur is perhaps the biggest waste of time I've ever seen. I've had both my dinc and fascinate and x since launch day and the only remedy I've found to stop the x from doing this is flash livery. Only way to fix it at all.

Yeah man sounds like you have a bad device. If a data wipe/reset wont do it you must have a have bad device . Go back where you got it and ask for an exchange

Before reading all of this....note that this is just me providing a POTENTIAL explanation of why some people's phones seem to reboot more than others... this is not a generalization for all... It may not apply to you...
I think that random reboots (especially often) are related to potentially bad hardware, not being on the 2.3.34 OTA update...or user error (don't get mad, please let me explain this part!). I found that after moving off of 2.3.15 OTA that my phone was much more stable.
I notice from back when I first had my Droid X that I went crazy loading up lots of apps, and throwing widgets all over my home screens... I had custom themes flashed and lots of other stuff. While yes, blur does suck up more system resources than custom ROM's without it... you can run a phone with Blur without constant reboots.
The more apps that you have on the phone (even if not running) eat up resources. Along with that, the more widgets or notifications you have on your homescreens, the more resources that the phone is chewing through... With that said, you can SEEM to not be running anything on the phone, but the widgets in the background process' can be using up precious memory that cause the phone to lag or reboot.
Like I said at the beginning, if you don't have a lot of extra widgets and programs loaded, then yes, I would say that really sucks that your phone reboots. Moto's way of handling a resource issue (in most cases RAM)... is to reboot the phone to clear memory.
If you happen to have a lot loaded on your phone...try not to use a lot of widgets, and cut back on some un-needed apps... See if the phone reboots as often. Again, this is not me blaming anyone for their phone rebooting, simply my understanding of technology from personal experience.
I'm asking since I complained about this issue to HTC customer service and they recommended a factory reset due to a possibility that the Gingerbread update had created a conflict with the previously installed firmware.
Either that or possibly a defective main board - which would require me to send my DZ in for repair (Oh, the horror of being stuck with my emergency phone, a Nokia 6300, for three weeks!). And that would probably not fix anything except if they gave me a new phone right away.
The former option might be worth a try even though it sounded like complete horse crap but I just wanted to make sure before having to re-install avery app and set up my homescreen all over again.
The issue is killing me! So far I've had two random reboots today, both of which happened with the screen off and no apps open. It has also happened a few times while playing Angry Birds Rio and in the middle of a phone conversation - the latter being the most annoying.
I have same problem. Reboots and homescreen restarts. I red that fa reset not working on homescreen restarts on another forum.

I did a factory reset after updating to 2.3 yesterday i havent noticed any problems yet but its been less than 12 hours since i set my phone and all my apps back up. Prior to doing the factory reset i noticed some minor interface errors including one homescreen reset but no actual phone reboots. Must say the look of the new sense including the quick settings in the pull down bar was well worth it

So factory reset is the best way to fix bugs, i see that factory reset can solve all of its. Good news
Thanks for your feedback, guys!
I think I'll do a reset tonight if I can find the time.
Will report back if this fixes the issue

Same problems here, from time to time I hear the HTC boot sound, meaning it's been restarting by itself. At least once a day. Also I often get the Sense iterface re-loading after I use some apps. All of this happened after I updated to 2.3.3, before that it ran flawless for more than 8 months.
I'll factory reset these days, but I really hate backing up, installing and configurig everything again.
Me too. Stock 2.2 to stock 2.3 unlocked. I was so annoyed that I uninstalled all the programs that kick in at start up (like British Airway's app, Continental, Sky News & so on & my phone now works like it did before, no restarts, no freezing, nor Sense restarts (unless I'm installing a lot or uninstalling a lot of programs)...
Sense restarts as there's low RAM in the device right? And when it's super low, it restarts the whole phone?

Been getting the same on DZ update when it came out for Europe. And it literally made me switch do CM7. My line of thought was if I was going to do factory reset I could as well switch to platform which will give me more up-to-date Android on updates...
Ok, so I went through the tedious process of doing a factory reset and setting my phone up all over again.
This was on Saturday and I've had no random reboots so far. What I did have today, though, was my phone suddenly being dead until I removed the battery, put it back in and turned the phone on again. This has happened many times before with 2.2.1 and is a known issue but this is the first time it happened after upgrading to 2.3.3 - hopefully also the last.
Sense is still restarting constantly

The same for me. Some of the problems are gone after the factory reset, but Sense keeps reloading after I install/update apps in Market or after using some apps. It never did that in 2.2.
Dead phone issue happened again just before *sigh*

A little update:
The factory reset seems to have actually fixed brightness setting itself on max even though Sense often restarts.

Last night my phone was working perfectly and i didnt install any new apps yesterday so i dont know what caused this to happen...
At about 6am today i turned on my phone. it was all fine until i unlocked it. When i put in my pattern it unlocked and it showed a few of my icons for about half a second and then it came up with an error message saying that the launcher had crashed so i pressed "ok" and it came up again so i pressed "report" and then it said "market feedback agent has stopped" and went back to the launcher and came up with the first error again.
i was just thinking about a way of getting around all the errors to install a new launcher so then i could use my phone. i plugged in my earphones and used the button to start playing my music, then i unlocked my phone and quickly opened skype before the error came up again and then i went in my notifications and i could open Play Music from the notification, i had a notification for an app update so i clicked it and it opened the play store so i installed "go launcher ex" i tried going into my recent apps to change my song but it said "system ui" had crashed, i tried to get into my settings but that crashed too, i worked out that it was most of the stock apps and a few others like bbm that werent working.
device specifications:
Nexus 4
Android 4.3
Rooted
Stock rom
Stock kernal
I dont know what to do without losing everything? thank you for any help
rebooted already? This usually fixes a lot of probs.
cheers
This is happening to me to. I fix it by clearing the ram or closing all open apps. But it happens like once daily now. Any long term solutions?

same issue as here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513412
just different description... Just cleared google service framework data... will check back in on that thread after tomorrow morning and let you know if it works.
Same here. Bone stock and I don't even shut the phone off but overnight something happens to it and all apps crash. It sucks because it was my morning alarm but the clock app crashes without sounding the alarm.
If I reboot it will work perfect till the next morning, then all over again. Wiped and it still does it. Called it in and Google wasn't aware of anything so if you get this make sure and call Google so they know its widespread.
I cleared services framework and it solved it. So far, 2 days without infinite force closes

That did not fix it for me.
I got the infinite loop the next morning.
i tried re-booting but nothing happened, i had to go into recovery mode and reset my phone. now i wish i made a backup.
I haven't been getting those major crashes yet but after a while I can't open any apps or they "stop. " I think it has been happening ever since I returned to stock for the kit Kat update. Closing all the apps sometimes fixes it but that ruins my favorite part of the phone which is I can have all my stuff open all the time.
