Thanks to Andmer MMS is now working. JT has used Andmer's MMS fix for the MIUI ROM and got it to work for CM7. So it is now safe for everyone to bask in the CM7 goodness
I'm putting this right up at the top of the OP so everyone can find it. If you are trying to flash the CM7 test 5 and you are getting the status 7 get.prop errors you have to unzip the ROM and go to META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script and delete the first 4 lines. By unzipping that doesn't mean right click and chose extract here. It means if you have 7 zip or winrar, just double click on the ROM file, double click on META-INF, double click on com, double click on google, double click on android, double click on updater-script, you will get a pop up window asking what program you want to open it with, choose notepad then follow nemesis2all's instructions here:
nemesis2all said:
These lines need to be removed from top of updater-script if you have issues with asserts on installation.
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "aries" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "aries" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "aries" ||
getprop("ro.product.device") == "fascinate" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "fascinate" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "fascinate" ||
getprop("ro.product.device") == "fascinatemtd" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "fascinatemtd" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "fascinatemtd" ||
getprop("ro.product.device") == "SCH-I500" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "SCH-I500" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "SCH-I500");
Then next line would be ui_print("Checking state of BML/MTD..."); everything from that line down stays.
Click to collapse
After you do that, save and update the notepad file, close the notepad file and you should get a pop up from winrar or 7 zip asking if you want to save the changes to the updater-script file, click yes. You can double click on the updater-script file and open with notepad just to make sure the changes saved. Close up the winrar or 7 zip window and you can now move the modified ROM zip to your sd card and flash with no problems.
- CM7 test builds 7 and newer and the accompanying recoveries attached in the OP have corrected the problem with the asserts, so you won't need to do the above with test build 7 as long as you use the attached recovery. Both links are the same recovery, the tar file is flashed through ODIN and the zip file is flashed through CWM.
Well since it was my idea to start a General thread for all discussion, speculation, and chatter regarding CM7, only fitting I should be the one to do it. Jt has asked several times that thank you posts, X/Y/Z doesn't work posts, I'd flash this ROM if posts, and bug reports without logcats not be posted because they just clutter up the thread. There is a ton of excitement as jt, times_infinity, nemesis2all and everyone else working on it bring the Fascinate closer to a fully functioning CM7 build, and the thread is being overrun with posts either asking when it will be ready, or just posts expressing excitement over the pending release or progress toward that release. I read through the entire thread this morning, and since jt has joined his work into mainline CM7 this is where it stands:
Everything, yes everything INCLUDING MMS. That includes camera, camcorder, video codecs, bluetooth (although I remember it mentioned possibly not A2DP but I could be wrong), & sms. Times_infinity has mentioned it was a matter of getting the RIL to work. I'm sure many of you know what RIL stand for and what it does. I did not so I had to look it up, and for those of you who also don't know - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Interface_Layer
So let's do jt and crew a favor and use this thread for all speculation, discussion, and chatter about CM7 for the Fascinate. I will do my best to update info as I hear it, but everyone else is free to do the same also. This is supposed to be for everyone's benefit, and since this is in the General Forum we can load this thread with as many posts as we want. If jt, times_infinity, or anyone else working on the CM7 build post an update in the CM7 thread in the Development section, repost the info here and we can discuss the update here. So feel free to post any news, rumors, speculation, discussion you want about CM7 for the Fascinate here.
And this doesn't have to be limited to jt's CM7 build either. Punk.kaos is also working on a CM7 build and this thread can also be a place for discussion about the differences between the two builds also. I would imagine there are people who prefer jt's build and never bother to keep track of kaos' build and vice versa. I'll see if I can work on putting together a comparative list of the two and post it later. But for now, let the discussion, speculation, and excitement begin..................
UPDATE 07/13
Jt1134 has released test build #10 here at XDA in his CM7 thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116424
You can view the changelog in that thread
Also nemesis2all has released his newest MTD OTB kernel, and it can be found here for those who want to manually undervolt and/or overclock the kernel:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1119169
Copied from the OP in that thread:
Working:
Calls!!
SMS
3G data
GPS!!
Bluetooth!!
WiFi
Camera/Camcorder
USB mass storage / sdcard
Sensors!!
MMS! (thanks andmer!)
Not Working:
bugs I dunno
Now that all of that is working, jt1134 has said he is going to clean up his CM tree and submit this build for acceptance into mainline Cyanogen. That would mean we would be eligible to get nightly builds of CyanogenMod. This is extremely exciting and shows you how good the devs are that jt1134 seems likely to have a completely 100% working, functional Gingerbread ROM for our phones before samsung/verizon do.
Let's keep this thread going while everyone who wants to and can is testing this build. Times_infinity has asked we not post bug reports with logcats in the test build thread at this time. So let's keep the general chatter and what do you like/not like about it in this thread, along with discussion of bugs and problems. AND DON'T FORGET TO THANK THE MAN
Also don't forget times_infinity who has been working with jt1134 on this and nemesis2all for his kernel work. Lots of thanks and appreciation to be given to all these guys. Show them the love.
(Donations don't hurt either for those who can afford to. Plus seems like jt is doing some of his best work when he's drinking so I'm more than happy to try and keep his beer fund full.)

I have high hopes for it and am looking forward to it. the last alpha builds were great, but this whole new tree is going to be a major step forward in functionality when it hits.
I'd also suggest that JT post a new thread when the beta drops, keeping that one cleaner than the alpha thread that's gone haywire.

I'm thinking that if BT in call, camera, camcorder and hw/sw codecs all work then mms will as well. In the alpha builds the bugs were not specific to any one area (i.e. ril or just the camera area) Can't wait for the radio to reveal the moment of truth. I still can't figure how they have determined that sms/mms works without the radio. Thoughts?

I should have written that down when I saw it. Times_infinity said in irc how they were able to test those, but I can't remember. Sorry.
I did flash the new build on my second Fassy trying to help nemesis with something. Unfortunately I couldn't find any drivers that allowed my phone to be recognized by adb and I wasn't able to help. But the ROM itself is pretty sweet. No clutter, just bare bones Android goodness. Can't wait for this to drop so we can play with it.

Banned. LOL
the true beauty of CM when fully merged as JTs trying to do.. are the nightlies.
I would literally install a new rom every day when I was on my droid incredible... after I figured out what was causing the random reboots and fixed it on the AOSP roms like CM for the incredible, that thing became unreal.
I cannot wait to get back to nightly builds and all the awesome features that come with them.
So then would all the nightlies be available in a database so you could flash an older one you liked better? Or once you flashed a new nightly was the previous one gone for good?
I personally just want the camera to work.... don't care about the radio's... LOL... just the camera.

As for the nightlies, are the phone specific? Or when everything gets merged for the fassy, cm7 is cm7 regardless of the phone?

I'm pretty sure I remember seeing that mentioned in irc, but with trying to retain info from work, personal life, AC, XDA, and irc I may be at full capacity and starting to not retain stuff
Basically I'm pretty sure I saw mms was working, just not 100% positive.

Welcome. It will be great once CM7 gets finished. I can wait as I'm doing just fine on KangBang, so jt and crew can take their time and make it awesome. And anytime they get it finished will be a hell of a lot sooner than when we will even get a whiff of GB from verizon.

+1 to that, I wonder how many people got their Fascinates within the last few months and what there feeling is though. I got mine on 9/13 and was initially pretty impressed, as time move on though the software side started to make the phone feel like it had been outgrown.
I just picked up a DINC, what waiting?
Definitely holding onto my Fascinate though. Although Sense 3.0 might have me hooked on HTC once it's stable.
Wait, so sms and mms are working? I thought a working RIL was needed for sms/mms to function.
Edit: so I read that wiki, and I'm assuming ril affects phone calls only?

Default Which ROM should I download?
I am currently running CyanogenMod 5.0.5.3 on my nexus one. However, I am eager to try something new. The reasons for switching are due to some stability issues with the ROM.
My checklist is quite small:
1) built in tethering
2) easy of use
3) very reliable and stable
Optional
2) would prefer support for Persian/Arabic font. however, it' is not essential
Any ideas?
you can try Enomther's latest release (1.9.2) released today; very stable with bunch of features; check out his changelog in the development section
If you want bunch of features, try Cyanogen's...
dont ask.....different ppl....diff opinions.... diff tastes.....try them....there are not many
Why not just wait for Froyo? Tethering out-of-the-box.

He's posting this across multiple boards trying to get answers... as I told him on another board:
Run over to XDA and read the posts on the ROM's out there and look at the feature lists.
You really should do the legwork yourself as other have.

The time spent to make an account and spam all these boards with this post could have been used to read the feature lists and decide on a ROM for himself.
As chowdarygm said, there are not many...
HI - well you have a decent amount of choice if you're using the nexus one. I tend to stick with roms from either @cyanogen or @kingklick92 i.e the CM rom or Desire Port respectively.
I made a blog post about it - have a read and maybe it will help with your decision.
Moving on from that there are a few enhancements you can apply to the ROM's, specifically you can 'undervolt' your ROM to save some power by moving across a new kernel.
I've tried loads of them to be honest - as earlier posters have said, the Nexus one development forum here at XDA is a great place to start, there is a stickie with a ROM list - a good start.
thanks, I appreciate it. I am still a newcomer.

Try Kang-o-rama...
New beta is based on CM 5.0.7, includes an OC/UV/21MB kernel, mods, optimisations and some great apps.
The best thing is that it installs in one hit, works together and is nice and quick.

Same here. The only mod I make to it is swapping out HelixLauncher or whatever it is for Launcher Pro, which seems to be much more stable.
I stick to the Cyanogen-based stuff because it's the standard, and also because I had a hell of a time dealing with those KingKx roms for my old G1. I was flashing and wiping so much my ass was raw, and Cyanogen roms are usually wipe-free.

Right now it runs. That's all I can say. But it is a lot better of a first build than other devices.... If I can get a working vendor built this weekend,we may see some progress(wifi working maybe....)

Same thing that was with my builds guys. Not worth it. Compile on your own for now if you really want this. There is no data, no calls, nothing. Until RIL is figured out, then CyanogenMod 7 is useless. I will be building full time once RIL is sorted but for now, these are useless other than having bragging rights. Not trying to discourage the OP but rather letting the masses know what's up.

What's the issue with RIL?
i have a build from another dev that runs and i have gapps but no data so you cant sign in and wifi throws you into a bootloop...we needa kernel and i think we will finally have GB for the TB!
RIL: Radio Interface Layer.
The only reason that we have no data/text/calling/etc for CM 7. These threads are beating a dead horse. Wait until we have a working test build. I'll start building again once we have that.
The issue is, it's not open source.

I think the title needs changing, and I really wish these builds were not posted if no one was willing to support them.
We end up getting the questions on irc, people don't read the disclaimers/warnings. The howto stealing sites (thats you A.T.) remove the warnings.
Maybe change title to "CM Builds - DATEHERE - NON-FUNCTIONAL" so less ppl will mess with it.
So we need to find the RIL files leaked? Or how do you get them?

Oh gotcha. So they have to make them compatible. That makes more sense. Now the closed source comment makes sense.
Thunderbolt Rooted!
This is absurd. Mods should lock this thread until we get a working rom.
No offense... but why? This thread is misleading, this thread will cause noobs too eff up their sh*t (despite your clearly stated warnings, they will not take them seriously), this thread is utterly useless because CM7 is not working, CM Parts are not working, RIL is not working...
Flashing this will make your phone useless (just like this thread).
Besides, there are already threads dedicated to compiling daily builds of CM7. Those threads have been put on hold (like they should) until CM7 is ready to be compiled. Even then, many people will flash extremely early builds of CM and wonder why certain functionality is missing or why x,y, and z does not work.
The underlying point is that this thread is going nowhere fast and will only cause problems. At least wait until the RIL is re-engineered and working.
Thank you.

Just flashed the stable version for the NS4G earlier. Here's some screenshots, let me know if there's something specific you want to see. Quite a few power options and UI options. Also flashed Matrix 15 cfs.
Observations so far:
The link to the gapps on Drew Garen's site goes to multiupload, which for obvious reasons doesn't work. I downloaded the gapps for CM9 and it seems fine so far.
Seems pretty zippy but not quite as fast as I was getting with Gummy.
For some reason Titanium isn't working -- I get a message saying I'm not rooted or that the ROM doesn't have busybox. I'm new at this so I'm not sure how to fix it.
Edited - ok so you can download busybox from the market. I'm an idiot.
I can't get overclocking to stay overclocked on boot, even though I have "set on boot" checked. It goes back to 1000.
The green flash thing when the phone goes to sleep is still around.
None of this is a knock though -- seems like a good rom with a lot of options and tweaks. Looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

No, the names aren't even spelled the same; "Steve Garon" and "Drew Garen".
Speaking of names, is it 'young bon' or 'young bone'. For some strange reason I believe it's a misspelling.
Im also running the stable of ocra at the moment (with matr1x 15.5) and im quite happy with it! If you want percice information have a look at their site!

Hello,
So I figured today that I would install icecream sandwhich on my Evo Shift. There is a problem with this however:

Thank you for your quick response. I went to the website you posted. I see he has listed different versions. The one listed as the most current version does my mention Icecream Sandwich in the log (his previous versions seem to list they are Gingerbread downloads). Also when I clicked the link he gives for the download, it says that he uploaded the file in June of last year, which suggests it isn't Icecream Sandwich. Do you know of a link that is for Android 4.0 (icecream sandwich)? Like I said, I can only find sites that list the Multiupload link, and that site is down. Thanks again for your time and help.

Sure. That's a great point.
But keep in mind, when you go back to GB after the display corruption, broken camera, broken GPS, broken WiMax and you get FC's after restoring your nandroid, you'd agree with my opinion.
ics definately is not usable as a daily driver obviously. But it does help the developers for users to flash and report bugs/issues they are having and what may be causing the issues. Some people may not need 4G like people that use miui as their daily roms, so once a majority of the bugs are squashed I'm sure a lot of people will find it usable. I am going to miss things like theme chooser and built in tethering from cm7 though there's a lot of good things in gingerbread roms that I hope I can just let go of when it's time to move on.

Noob? Who the hell you calling a noob lol? They know all the bugs they had like one or two people test it before releasing it for the devs that don't have the device. We're lucky enough to have some experienced devs that do have the device and probably do know most of the major issues/bugs. Don't ever tell people to shutup, this is a discussion board remember?

Still there's no reason why people should'nt give it a try. Otherwise, what's the point or rooting and installing a custom recovery? You should encourage users to try new ROMs, if it doesn't work out, that's why we have nandroid backups. I was using ICS as a daily since I don't have 4G where I live and camera isn't a big concern for me. I'm currently on MikG to develop an app for tommytomatoe and once complete, I will be rocking it again. How about letting people form their own opinion without you always throwing your negativity and "expert" opinion into the mix?

yeah that link is only for the his GB ROMs. Prewludedrew actually hasn't updated his ICS for the Shift in a minute AFAIK.. I would suggest trying Zenulators ZenMod9 or KushDeck's ICS ROM.. Both ROMs are a little bit farther along in development.

I guess the only feature not working I would miss is the camera. Do you guys think there is any chance of the camera being fixed in the future?

Camera partially works with Decks and Zens ROM. Both are in the development section.

Oh cool. I will have to give it a try this weekend. Which of the two mods do you like more? And why?
Thanks for the info.
hi
was the development for the slim ics port stopped? because the thread just vanished and i can't find it again. Am i too stupid or did somebody really delete it?
the thread about the sd version is still there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763112
the thread was here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759815

I haven't been following it lately, but I saw a dispute whether the developer should have made a slim version of an already available ROM or not. So it is likely that the original ROM developer asked to cease the slim port and sought a thread closure.

if the thread would have been simply closed like others i would agree, but this thread vanished completely. the dispute was on the first two pages. how can a rom-cooker demand that his android rom doesn't get ported? credits where given where they where due and apart of that aosp is oss.

Fully agree wirh you.
What was wrong with porting rom and giving credits to original Dev?
For me it was the fastest, smallest ics rom for hd2.

Post deleted. But i have links. Long live Google Cache
From slim ics site:
"Supported Devices here, no extra devices for now ( and NO PORTS of Slim ICS)"
"http://source.android.com New versions will also be announced through this site."
"Fully built from AOSP sources with some cherry picks from CM and AOKP team, Easy to customize features (thanks to AOKP team)"
Atm trying to be calm but... Lets just say it piss me off this kind of thing.
This guy need to look at Miui team, they have right set of mind.

Hope not!
It would be nice if a moderator (or someone that knows and is objective about it) can tell us what happened. If it ended up in a heated argument I wouldn't want someone telling us only his half of the story - but I really would like to know.

Same here. Btw dev of original Slim ics rom seems had allergy reaction on porting his rom. As i allready posted. What i dont get it, how in open source community is it possible? Isn't whole point to be open, share with ofc giving credits to ppl which contributed?

If it was pulled by a moderator upon request personally I think it's within reason. The thread wasn't stated as being Unofficial, which it should have been, and with a system partition of 130MB it can hardly even be called a slim OS (other full fat ROMs are 150); nevermind comparable to SlimICS which are half that size (54 - 70). And besides the last post I seen on the thread was from the OP who said he wasn't happy with the build and wanted to change the ROM he was porting from, and it was only an alpha.
On a similar note, if a small ICS rom is to come along, I personally thing it would be benificial if we could utilise squashfs. This would require kernel support, the toggles are there to turn on squashfs support in dorimanx, but it may require a module from somewhere, I'll PM dori tomorrow concerning this unless someone here know if squash can/can't be used with our bootloaders / device. Only problem I can for see is in module compatibility, and if it works should allow for smaller versions of our current ROMs.
Your position is legit but non of the slim ics roms include gapps and trebucht as launcher. It was comparable to other full roms with about 50-100mb less memory. And for me it's totally legit to port a ROM from one to an other device if you give credit and state which Tom was ported. Would be different if there was some own coding for tools and drivers was done. Don't distribute my tools without my permission is different than don't share something i picked up somewhere else and used it for my own work. That's not how the gold licence works.

Most of ics roms are from 150 to 220m(miui).
This rom without gapps was around 85mb.
I have atm slim ics with trimmed gapps and some media files that fit in less then 120mb, if i compare to other ics rom which i used as trimmet down, they were from 140 to 190mb imho it was really Slim version of rom
Edit: Maybe it was beta version but worked without problems and it was the fastest ics i tried and i tried them alot

Fair point, the last zip I downloaded had a system folder of 130MB thats where I got my sizes from, have had a play with squashfs and have shrunk this down from 130 to 92MB. Will try tomorrow to get a kernel to compile properly and see if squash works here. Haven't tried slim myself, currently running PA and can't see how it can be faster. Have you had any issues when trying to make a call /pressing the call button?

If i don't consider common issues which have most of ics hd2, like sometimes funky memory management which on heavy duty can produce little problems, there aren't any un ordinary problem.
Calls working very snappy.
In fact whole rom is fast, responsive, low battery consumption, apps which i tested working correctly even Ted app.

I tried both, as well as some other ICS rom and believe me, it's faster than any other 4.0.4 around here. In fact I'm using it as my daily and I find it excellent, such a shame the thread has been deleted.
Hi ppl, sorry for the silence on this. Apparently there was a problem with permissions for Zorua's thread, I asked the moderators advice on the future of my thread, and it was decided to close my thread also. I have no problem with this decision.
Sorry for any inconvenience to anybody caused by this episode.
It is a great shame though, it was a really nice build.
