[Q] How to convert video + subtile ? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I use handbrake to convert video for NookColor to 720p and it work perfect.
However i can't make the subtitle embed to the video picture.
Is there any way ?

subtitles
yes, handbreak and drop folders!
add
Code:
-s 1 --subtitle-burn 1
to the end of your other settings.
in the handbreak gui you just select the subtitle from the source and choose burn in. (google this one for better pointers)
i'm using nightly builds of handbreak (both gui and cli)

you dont neet to embed the subtitles,
if you place them in the same folder, with the same name of the movie file (of course, with different extension) the video player will show them. at least with moboplayer, mvideoplayer and i think rock player does so
i prefer to keep them separated.... you never know when you want to see the movie without the subs.
i have only tried with .srt subtitles, don't know about other formats

AVI +SUB's

hi guys!
there is any way to play a movie (divx, xvid, etc.) on HD and to see also the subtitles of the movie (srt, txt, etc.)?
i don't want to reconvert them and iclude the sub, just to copy the movie file and the sub file in the same directory and play them in the same manner as on PC with BSPlayer
thank you!
yes, teoreticaly with TCPMP. But your video will most probably lag, because TCPMP sux. So you better burn them in your movie on PC.
i knew about tcmp but i also knew that it sux.
i thought that it would be possible with core or divx player or other player.
i have a lot of avi movies with separate sub file and i want to use them as they are.
thank you!
i forgot what program there was but you can embed the subtitles on the video and it re-encodes back to avi and it works with core player. i'll see if I can dig the program up again.
they are several programs, cucusoft is one of them, but, as i said, i don't want to reconvert them. i just want to use them as they are: avi file + sub file
when y put subtitles in TCPMP quality of pictures is worst than original, why?

Nothing of the sort, yet.
The Core Player people said that they might include such a function down the line.
that's just too bad.
we'll have to wait for people from coreplayer. hope not too long

Videos on Nexus One

What video format does the nexus one read and where on the sdcard do we put them? Also what format does the camera output too when finished recording video?

Don't know about the first question, but the camera outputs 720x480. Try recording a video and checking your sd card to see the format.
it natively reads H.263 (encode and decode) MPEG-4 SP (encode and decode) H.264 AVC (decode), and no doubt reads many others with apps downloaded from the market. I beleive on the SD Card put them in a folder called "Video". Not sure about what the video output format is but I do know it is compatible with Youtube Uploading.

what extensions do those equate to? avi? wmv? m4v?
avi, mp4, not sure about wmv.
Just to test, I downloaded the 720P video of "Elephant's Dream" in MP4 format. . . AMAZING quality. :-D
http://www.savevid.com/video/elephants-dream-hd-1080p.html Scroll down and download the MP4 version.
Link says 1080, but pretty sure the MP4 is only 720.
DivX???

What software are you using to convert movies for Nexus, And what settings?

Im using a Mac and will be using doubleTwist (Also on PC)
Because it syncs with my iTunes but you can just drop and drag videos and it will convert to the correct format you
It will even detect your device as a Nexus One
MP4 is simply an encapsulation method, many MP4s are just going to be incompatible. There are pretty fine settings needed to get it to work, but I believe you'll want to transcode movies to h.264 or h.263 for video and aac audio, in 480x800.
If you want to be sure you can view the Nexus' videos on your PC, set up a youtube account and upload them after recording. Then you can log into your YouTube account and download them as MP4 (h.264)

where do we put videos on the sdcard, i cant find anywhere to put it.
Hey Blueman... I just plugged in the sdcard and made a new folder called video and put some movies and music videos in there. Once inserted back into the handset they were in my gallery, was pretty easy.

what format?
I always codec my videos to mp4 or m4v... I have loads of videos I've converted for my Omnia HD which are mostly mp4 and divx.... haven't tried any divx yet but the mp4's play just fine.
In case anyone needs an awesome video converter the best one IMO is format factory, which is free and has tons of presets and is easy to use.

m4v's aren't showing up on mine, they play the audio, but the video is not there.

i'm getting the same thing from an mkv file i encode. i do have some other mp4's working, but can't figure out the settings to get every movie working. how annoying. just support more formats!
why arent avi's supported?

movie format and app question

okay, whats the best movie format for the tilt2, i've searched and still confused, if mpeg4, avi, divx, etc...also what's the best app to watch them in: TCPMP, coreplayer or the stock steaming that is loaded already..etc....
thanks in advance,
fyi, might be will to share some movie by posting it on a server for a couple days...=)
What I prefer for movie format is straight up Windows Media Video . Its great and its stock for Windows Mobile.
The Encoder for your PPC is called Windows Meda Encoder 9 (Google it).
Instructions.
Here are the steps to get the video size you want, which I hope you will try, you must go to the New Session Wizard, then click on Convert a File (If you are trying to convert a video file into WMV).
Then find your source file which is your Video you want to watch on your TP2, after that choose your output (Where you want to put that file after it encoded into WMV)
After click Pocket PC (Note that you won't change resolution here)
After all that, choose specifically Pocket PC widescreen video (CBR), then choose the quality of your Bitrate, Audio, and if you want you can add all the Description to your video file if you'd like. (Note that you won't change resolution here either)
Click next, and DON'T check mark Begin converting when I click finish.
Then click finish, after that click Properties on your Windows Media Encoder 9 (it should be on top with a Check mark inside a paper symbol) and click the Video Size Tab. There at the bottom of the wizard you should find Width and Height, set the Resolution to 800 x 480 if you want to view your video horizantel or 480 x 800which is vertical ( which I don't prefer ) After all that, your video should be small but at a good quality and allowing you to have free space on your Micro SD card, and it should be playing on WMP on your phone.
Hope my 2 cents helps
Like avi... Have 700+Mb movie files converted from dvds and they work like a dream...
Use coreplayer...
I use this for converting to MPG4 and then I view using the HTC player.

Free and absolutely smooth. Easy and quick converting.

I tried this but it puts in on an .mp4 format that does not play in my TP2, am I missing something? thanks.
i have another question, whats the best average size movie to put on the tilt 2 and still have good picture and runs smooth
About the average size for a movie would be almost 200MB to 300MB depending on the amount of time of the movie.
as anyone converted transformer 2 movie to mpeg4, i'm having problems...that movie won't let you convert?

I suppose whether it can be converted properly or not depends on the software you are useing and the source of the file.... who knows what could be wrong with it if you stole it off the internet. If you ripped it from your own dvd/bluray and it isnt working I would say that's likely because what ever converter program you are using doesnt work.
That said.. I dont bother coverting anything really. avi/mpg whatever format they come in TCPMP or Core player will play them just fine.

.mkv and subtitles

I was looking around and saw that the video player does not display the subtitles for .mkv files...does anyone know if it would be possible to somehow enable the video player to be able to display them?
Sent from my HTC Dream using XDA App
Bumping.
I've got the same question. If the default player doesn't play mkvs with subtitles, is there another player that does so (already tried Rock Player).
I think we're outta luck. I asked this question a while back and got nothing but crickets.
If you absolutely need the subtitles, you could always hard encode them, but it is probably only worth the time if you absolutely cannot do without subtitles.
Nothing on the market right now which will get the subtitles. It sucks I know. There is a player in development that will support it but its not too close to release.

Have you guys tried mVideoPlayer?
It has pretty decent support for subtitles. Not sure if it plays embedded ones in mkv's, but it definitely does support subtitles.
Strange, I recall seeing a thread on Xda that had the same question but there was a guy who posted a picture/screencap of mkv and subtitles playing on a video player. I should have bookmarked that thread.

I've tried this but it didn't work. I extract the subs in .ass format and tried to load it but mVideoPlayer couldn't find the file even after I change the directory.
Try searching for meridian player in the market.

Did you make sure to rename the .ass file to match the .mkv you extracted it from? Make sure the file names match and put them both in the same directory on your phone. mVideoPlayer will load the subs automatically after you open the .mkv. It works flawlessly for me on my Galaxy S.
To view MKV files with subtitles, I've been using MKVtoolnix with MKVextractGUI to extract the subtitles from the MKV container. After the extraction, make sure the subtitle file(.ass, .srt, etc.) has the same name as the MKV file and place it in the same folder as the video. When that's done, use mVideoPlayer to play your file.
Hope this works for you!
I would include links for you guys, but there's a restriction for new users. A quick Google search should help you find the programs you'll need.

the problem with supporting subtitles in .mkv containers...is just that....mkv is JUST a container format, which can contain a myriad of video, audio, and subtitle file formats. And there are several subtitle file formats...
mVideoplayer supports external .SRT subs, so what one can do is use a tool like virtualdubmod or mkvtoolnix to demux subs out of the mkv container and assuming they are SRT, just extract them and name them to the exact name of the MKV file. it's also possible to download SRT subs fairly easily for common videos, but there's the possibility that text timing can be off....
...apparently mVideoPlayer supports .ass as well....
Oh, I just had to place the subs in the same folder as the Video. That worked for me.
Breaking: mVideoPlayer 2.20 updates states that it now supports subs in MKV's. I haven't tried it yet, I'm just now dling it.
Peep here.
Support for subtitles in MKV files, but you need a phone that supports playback of mkv.

edit: more info
Yep, now it is time again for another beta version of mVideoPlayer. This time the big news are subtitle support in mkv files for phones that support playback of these files. (Galaxy S for example).
Full change-log:
- Support for subtitles in MKV files for all Galaxy S owners!
- Toggle subtitle on/off has been replaced with 'Subtitle Tracks' since MKV files may have multiple subtitle tracks.
- Now remembers previous search phrase in all search dialogs.
- IMDb Info accessible from poster search activity through long press on movie.
- Fix for poster search cache showing up in Gallery app on Android < 2.2 devices.

[Q] Copy Movies ??

Hi .
SO i just got my Glaxy tab and i am trying to move a few video files from my PC to the tab .
When i try to copy them Windows 7 suggest me to convert them .
So when i am copying MP4 files without convert they look so small that i can bearly see anything . But if i try to convert them i takes about 3 hours to copy a 500MB file ?
When trying to copy WMV file without converting it doesnt work ...
Any suggestion or best practice on moving video files to the tab ?
I have movies in mp4 and m4v and they also look small in the included video player. However, in mVideoPlayer they fill the screen just fine.
I just downloaded a 700mb file via Dropbox and it took about 25 minutes.
Convert them using your own software then transfer them over, or don't convert and use a different video player that can stretch your video (Rock Player, mVideoPlayer, VPlayer).
imo this is the place the tablet is the most lacking - default video player is absolutely balls.

Use MoboPlayer. Its free and they have a codec for 3.1 tabs that plays anything. You can also view default size, full screen, vertical stretch, and 16:9. Definitely the was to go...just drag/drop, deny conversion, and play with MoboPlayer.

It did not support 1080p for me. I had the same video file in both 720p and 1080p. Mobo played the 720p perfectly, but would not open the 1080p version.
I dont think you need to convert anything. Just copy the file and play it in Mobo Player or Rock player. I think you can ignore the Windows notification and try the playback on the Tab first.
720p works fine

I just tested the 720p and it works beautifully. Also works for mkv movies I just loaded! Fantastic!!
Another option is to use a program like xmedia recode to convert the file into native resolution for the tab; and in a container which is compatible, then push it to you tab.
This is usually how I get my movies to work on my droid; haven't tried it yet, but it's on the list of things to do tonight.
for those that say they've had luck with the MKV container, can you share your encoding profile? I've not been able to get a high profile encoded video to play in an mkv container. I can demux & remux into an mp4 container and the same video works. But, I loose the ac3 audio.
Still at work.

I didnt encode the mkv movie that I have...I snagged it from my brother but when I get home tonight I'll look it up and post it back here.
Transferring movies
I usually use SwiFTP and Cyberduck to transfer movies to my IO tab. Since I'm on a mac, there's no native usb transfer capability, and it only takes about 3 minutes to transfer a 700mb avi.
Thanks.
Mine are encoded with High L4.0. I think MKVs will only work if they are L3.1 or lower.
I for one would just let windows convertthem. It takes forever but it works perfectly. Did this with RED 720p and rhe movie played flawlessly in diff media playes. Didnt do it with a 720p episode of southpark and all media players had good audio but video was lagging behind. Mobo almost had it in sync but even that was off by a bit. Gonna go convert a bunch of music videos andput those suckers onhere
