[Q] Looking for a GB ROM with tether and hotspot included.. - Droid X General

I have been using the tether and hotspot with a previous device. Since coming to the X I have only loaded one ROM (forgot to test it for tether and hotspot). I am running the .596 right now. but the hotspot is asking to set-up through Verizon. Is there a ROM for the X that has the hotspot and tether built in?

can't you just download wireless tether for root users? or does that not work on gingerbread builds?

I rooted and tried to freeze the Verizon hotspot app, but it isn't showing up in Titanium Backup. I would be interested in that ROM also.
The apk for the 3g hotspot isn't in the \system\app folder, so I am not sure where to look for it. And any tethering app also opens the Verizon tethering app and forwards you to the sign up page for their tethering.

All custom roms I have used with another device did not direct me to Verizon to sign up.
I will do more research on this. I am sure there is a rom out there or app.
When I did the official. 596 alot of my apps are no longer available. Will also look for different apps in the market than what I had.

tethering without root

is it possible to tether without root right now?
Yup you can use a non-rooted android phone as a modem only thing is it is only a free trial. but click the LINK to see the developers site.
Great, did anyone try it? The trial and the full version?
Hows the full version? Worth the bet?
Thanks guys!
I've tried the trial, it works pretty well. Some things do not work on the trial version, for example I think you cannot browse https sites without the full version. Not sure if many other alternatives exist if you are not rooted though!
Without root you can use Proxoid (free) or PDAnet ($29) and you need to have the phone connected by USB cable. Proxoid does have limited functionality.
If you have root you can tether properly via wifi with aNetShare (free), android-wifi-tether (free) or tether Wifi (~$9).

I'm not quite following what you mean? Before you were rooted the vz navigator and vz hotspot apps aren't displaying message?
I recommend using google maps over the vz navigator if that is what you are using. Could you please provide some more details?

Before root both the vzw nav and the stock 3g hotspot app had nag screens stating provisioning required to use the apps. After root both apps now appear to fully work. Are these apps now unlocked, ie vzw is not going to see the use of these apps and charge me, or should I use other apps such as google nav and tether for root users?

AH! ok, now I think I've got what you're asking =)
You will still be charged to use these apps... Didn't know that the provisioning page disappeared with roote privileges though. I would recommend using google maps, as the newest version allows for offline use through caching, and I personally like it better, because its free.
As for the wireless tether, if you are just looking for simple internet access through tethering, I would use wireless tether for root from the market. If you are dying to use the VZW hotspot, there are 2 hacks to use it... The first involves starting the hotspot app, then toggling flight mode on and off, then going back into hotspot, and tyou should be good to teher. Method 2: Team black hat has a hack that allows you to use and update.zip to allow the hotspot to work without the fee. You will need to google around for it. This is more of a "not recommended, as it violates morals/ethics" kinda thing. Just an fyi.

Thank you, allready installed tether for root. Works great! I could care less about the nav app, but my wife feels she really needs it! (she couldn't find her way out of a paper bag). Again thanks!

Wifi tether?

Anyone have an apk for the Wifi tether app? It doesn't seem to be on the market anymore.

You could also try Barnacle, it's still in the market...
I believe barnacle was removed too. Just the donate wiget was left on market.
That's strange...when I search for Barnacle from the phone, only the donate widget shows up, but searching for it on my computer (in the regular old Android Market) it is there.
Edit: OK, it's because I've got two other devices linked to my account. Ironically it is still available for my Nook Color, but it obviously wouldn't do any good there!
Different providers block those apps. Sprint recently had them removed.
Can you jsut use the one included in most roms? or if one isnt included can you use an apk that someone else has backed up and install it on your phone? if that will work I can send you one for a sense 3.5 rom.

Tethering success stories?

Dear xda-developer geniuses:
I got my Nexus 4 from play store and got the T-mobile unlimited 4G plan (no cap), without tethering plan. The phone is rooted with stock 4.2.2
It's my first android device, so I looked all over for ways to tether, but failed to make any of them work properly:
- I use firefox with useragent switcher.
- I've tried Wifi tether rooted app, but only macbook can detect it (under wifi device). Windows and android tablet does not detect it. I've also tried with Hotspot shield and onavo extend app.
- I've tried the TrevE Mod wifi tether app, no luck. (If you got this working, what are your settings)
- I've tried 1-click tether, clockwork tether, foxifi, barnacle, none of them worked for me.
- If I use the Nexus built-in tether function, Windows can connect to it, but it is limited (I've waited 30mins, it stays limited).
Anyone successfully got tethering working on their nexus 4? Please share your method! Thank you!
I use the stock app, and I'm not rooted.
On my Firefox browser, I would have to change the user string to android phone or whatever. It works fine and can torrent okay (some ports are blocked on TMO).

Thanks for the reply!
Can I ask what is the user string you are using? I'm not sure if the one I use is appropriate: "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-us; Nexus One Build/FRF91) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1"

I'm on the Android 2.2 string.
i pay for the tethering service from tmobile, since i need to tether about every day. i have no issues tethering my other devices(galaxy nexus, nexus 7, laptop) to my nexus 4. i use the native wireless tether option mostly, but the other apps work fine also.

Unlimited hotspot

Hi guys, I'm wondering if there is a way to get unlimited hotspot working with essential phone on sprint network yet? My plan has unlimited cellular data but not much hotspot data.
Cheers.
Are you using Nova Launcher?

No, just stock launcher. Does it have this option to do unlimited tethering using my non-hotspot data?

Have to switch to Nova Launcher, much easier and no root required.

Are you implying there's some sort of shortcut Nova Launcher can access to enable tethering? Your posts aren't very informative...
I apologize for not being clearer, but yes, that is what I am saying. Nova Launcher has an easy shortcut.
Here it is...
Long press your home screen
Go to widgets
Nova widgets
Drag activities to your homescreen
Scroll down to settings
Scroll down to tethering and portable hotspot, click it...
You now have access to the hidden tethering menu
Ummm... I don't know that Nova addresses what he is asking. Some carriers block or limit tethering on the device. When you go to tether, it basically "phones home" to see your tethering subscription status...
It does that with the stock Android tethering app. So it doesn't matter that you can put the icon on your desktop or whatever... if the app fails, it fails. I think he is looking for another app that will bypass his carriers restrictions.
I have Unlimited on AT&T and they give me 10GB of tethering per month which is plenty.

Yes, Nova launcher gives you access to the hotspot/tethering settings that Sprint blocks.
Sent from my PH-1 using Tapatalk
How would Sprint block access to it on a phone that they don't have access to and didn't install software to?
From what he posted, he can tether, but he is limited by Sprint as to how much data he can tether per month. How does the Nova setting change that?
I use hotspot for work in the wireless settings... It's free with my free BYOD plan, and it's not blocked in any way. Idk if it's showing whether I'm tethering or not on their network, but it's practically the only reason I've decided to stick with the plan. It's barely worth it even being free.
I admit I do not know anything about the spring variant so if I'm wrong I apologise.
If you have root, it's as simple as editing /system/build.prop
Add this to the end of the file:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Then download a terminal emulator of your choice (or use adb on your PC) and do as follows:
su (then grant root in the pop-up)
settings put global tether_dun_required 0
Now restart your phone.
If you don't have root, get PDA Net?
I've been tethering since September on Sprint with the stock launcher. You just need an app to create a shortcut to the tethering settings. It's not blocked, just hidden.
I used FoxFi to trick it so I could configure my hotspot settings. Then I use MacroDroid with a widget button to toggle it on/off.
For FoxFi, once something connected to the hotspot, a notification appeared to alert me that something was connected. Tapping that takes you to the stock tethering menu. I don't fully trust FoxFi beyond that trick.
If you have an "unlimited" data plan, but you don't pay for tethering, your provider can and will block your tethered device after a couple hundred MBs of data. T-mobile will try and block tethered devices after 200 MB (from my experience). The way they do it, I've discovered, is by watching for browser ID tags (specifically Browser User Agent), so if you're using a desktop browser on a device tethered on your mobile plan, you'll suddenly be directed to a T-Mobile page to buy into their "Smartphone Mobile Hotspot" plan.
But I found a way around it. One is a browser plug-in that allows you to customize your Browser User Agent, so it can tell a website (and thus your snooping ISP) what type of browser you're using. So you set it to Android (or iPhone Safari, or whatever), and your ISP/Data Provider thinks you're on a mobile device.
The other way around it is making sure you're using a secured & encrypted app connected to a secure and encrypted service, there is no way for your ISP to know what is being used.
VPNs and some proxies will work over tethering too, without your provider knowing you're tethering.
Of course, YMMV.
I purchased unlocked Essential from amazon and had portable hotspot listed but when I got phone activated it disappeared. Any suggestions. Tried nova launcher with negative results. Looking for any help.
Thanks

Stock Nougat or Beta Oreo? They're in different places. Are you on Sprint? They're the only ones with modified builds (possibly Telus too? I forget.)

I also bought the essential phone from Amazon, before setting it up with Sprint i had the option for mobile hotspot, after setup it was gone. I followed the steps using Nova Launcher and was able to get my hotspot working. I don't know if this makes a difference, but i tried Foxfi before trying Nova.
